6:18. Stuka challenged Atlantis Jr. to a mask match at HTL and attacked him with his trophy. Atlantis Jr. was stretchered out.

The main event angle was really strong, though more so in a vacuum. Atlantis Jr. was the rudo up until now, but Stuka attacked him here and Atlantis Jr. got the sympathy stretcher ride. That’s nothing new with Atlantis Jr.; it continues to come off like there’s an internal disagreement on Atlantis Jr’s role. Stuka also repeatedly challenged Atlantis Jr. to put up his mask at Homenaje a Dos Leyendas, which CMLL had said Atlantis would have another match on that earlier in the night. It does appear CMLL’s going with this match, maybe all the way to September.

Stuka did apologize in advance to Atlantis Sr. for going after his son’s mask.

CMLL usually hands out small trophies for these tournaments, so shout out to the person who realized they needed to get something big for the Stuka/Atlantis angle to work.

The opener had good energy. Lluvia singles matches convince me she’s better as a tag wrestler. Really good turnout for this show, the best since the restart show. PPV seemed slightly up as well.

4) Esfinge b Rugido
Esfinge took 1/3
5) Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Terrible b Fugaz, Soberano Jr., Star Jr.
Ingobernables took 1/3.

The CMLL recap calls Los Ingobernables as “polemico”. Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja still do get booed but the most recent reason they were booed – taking the Los Ingobernables name when it didn’t feel like they should be the group – feels moot. It’s just a thing faded into the background, people aren’t angry about it any more. That group of title has lots of title belts but don’t feel relevant.

4) Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Terrible vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado
5) Atlantis, Stuka Jr., Titán vs Felino, Negro Casas, Templario

There is no good reason to have a relevos incredible match in the opener, but there it is. Fourth match is a preview of the trios tournament in the next paragraph. Atlantis & Stuka probably should be fine teaming.

CMLL made a bunch of announcements on the 03/18 Homenaje a Dos Leyendas show during and after Friday’s PPV. The full card has not been released, but it looks like:

  • Panterita del Ring, Suicida, Oro Jr. vs Robin, Halcon Suriano Jr., Electrico
    • mentioned on the show, hasn’t been advertised elsewhere yet
  • a women’s relevos suicidas and a apuesta match
  • TJP & Volador vs Mistico & Averno
  • and a four-team tournament for the vacant CMLL Trios championship
    • Ultimo Guerrero, Atlantis Jr., Gran Guerrero
    • Hechicero, Mephisto, Euforia
    • Sagrado & Los Gemelo Diablos
    • Angel de Oro, Terrible, Niebla Roja

All rudo teams in the trios title tournament. The Guerreros are the clear favorite for the trios titles, vacant since NGD and CMLL parted ways in August. In another promotion, Stuka might cost Atlantis Jr. the titles but that’s not something CMLL does (and that’s good.) This is a seven-match card as is, including a seeding battle royal, so that’s probably the whole card.

The women’s competition will actually start on March 11th, making for a two week eight-team tournament. It’s incredible pairs like the men’s tournament, except it’ll be the losers who advance. Teams:

  • Marcela & Metalica
  • La Jarochita & Tiffany
  • Dark Silueta & Lluvia
  • Stephanie Vaquer & La Magnifica
  • Reyna Isis & La Vaquerita
  • Princesa Sugehit & La Seductora
  • Dalys & Skadi
  • Amapola & La Guerrera

The quarterfinals and the finals will take place on March 11th. The final tag team match and the resulting apuesta match (hair/mask or hair/hair) will take place on 03/8. Isis & Vaquerita and Metalica & Marcela both recently feuded on Tuesday Arena Mexico shows, and Vaquerita’s the favorite to lose her hair. The CMLL women’s division has a lot of people who are never pushed and wouldn’t be hurt by a hair loss – Magnifica, Sedcutore, La Guerrera all are possibilities too.

H2L will be a TicketmasterLive show. It’s not up yet, figure on it being the expensive price. No TicketmasterLive shows are up for March yet.

Atlantis was officially added to the Guadalajara sports hall of fame on Friday. Olimpic swimmer and noted lucha libre fan German Sanchez handled his induction speech.

I’ve got into the pattern of just uploading CMLL stuff to the Google Drive and not saying much about it, so just a quick note: MVS’s internet feed was offline all weekend, so no matches from that show this week. The feed was back working Monday, so hopefully, that was just a one-weekend thing. There haven’t been set patterns to the CMLL B-shows since the second restart, so I’m not even exactly sure what was missed.

AAA

AAA aired the first two matches from Rey de Reyes on TV this week, with matches three and four airing next week. There are a lot of interviews and vignettes to stretch out the show, since this is one less week than usual. This week’s TV included the Arcano/Arcano match which joined in progress on the FITE brodcast. The two Arcanos were Komander and Hijo del Vikingo, and there was no explanation why two people in Arcano outfits were fighting. (Maybe the non-storyline reason was so they could do the Spider-Man pointing meme.) It seems crazy Vikingo was wrestling in a dark match to open the show and then came back for the main event, but everyone got away with it this time.

A vignette airing at the end of AAA’s TV show explained Microman is still with La Empresa, but they’re all angry with him and treated him poorly. It’s unclear why he wants to be in the group.

AAA is taping in Madero on Saturday, with a listed start time of 8pm. I’m not sure if we’ll find out if AAA will be streaming that show until the day of the show, so maybe don’t plan your day around it. The big news on the Madero taping teased by a Facebook page on Friday was 2×1 ticket deal in the cheapest section. That’s usually a sign tickets aren’t moving well and tickets not moving well is a reason AAA might not want to tell people you can see their show for free quite yet.

AAA continues to advertise LA Park for the Showcenter debut show even though LA Park isn’t on the lineup they put out. Maybe it’s an issue with the lineup, it’s not like those can be trusted.

Charly Manson says he’s had talks to return to AAA, but nothing has been confirmed. Anyone with AAA history is probably getting a call to see if they’re interested in coming back this year and Charly would make a lot of sense.

EMW says Tay Conti will appear on the 03/26 show, her Mexico debut. Conti was previously scheduled to wrestle in Mexico on the doomed Federacion Wrestling show. Conti and Sammy Guevara did a seemingly random challenge for the AAA mixed tag match last month, so maybe that’ll go somewhere now. Champions Arez (RIOT) and Chik Tormenta (Arena GDL) are advertised elsewhere that day, so the mixed tag title match couldn’t happen that day. They could set up for later. It would be the second pending AAA title match happening because AEW wrestlers pitched it on Twitter, joining Omega/Vikingo.

Between a desire to bring in people from the past and an urge to bring in people from the US, there are sure going to be a lot of people on AAA shows this year. If US wrestlers are only on cards to appeal to the US, this show would seem to be streamed in some way. My post about Conti on Twitter blew up much bigger than most talent announcements of that kind, so there seems like there’d be significant US interest in seeing her on this show. Willie Mack has also been advertised for that show.

Martinez Entertainment posted a low res video of their April 1st show poster. From what I can make out, AAA wrestlers Arez, Taurus, Psycho Clown, Laredo Kid, Mr. Iguana, Faby Apache, La Hiedra, Chik Tormenta, Aerostar, Aramis, Drago, and Pimpinela Escarlata are booked, as are Crazy Boy and Extreme Tiger. That’s probably the bulk of the Mexico-based group working the AAA show in Dallas the next day. AAA still hasn’t announced anything from that show; they’re going much slower than everyone else.

AEW announced they’re running in Ontario, California on June 3rd, which is said to be the start of a west coast tour. AAA has TripleMania in Tijuana on June 18th, which might line up for some crossover.

FILL 93. FILL vs NGT. Puma de Oro originally used a foul to get the pin, but the referee reversed the call and awarded Noisy Boy the win by DQ. Both teams brawled post-match as if this was headed to a cage match.

This was good for a trainee show, with the fourth match and the main event getting the most attention. I don’t bother to track down the iTV feed most times but it’s the better version this time out.

6) Cíclope & Miedo Extremo vs Alpha Wolf & Dragón Bane
7) Canek & Octagón vs DMT Azul & Fuerza Guerrera

This has an “IWRG” logo on the poster, but the card looks to be mostly a Lucha Libre Boom show. That main event shocked me with how poorly designed it is. Canek, Octagon, and Fuerza are very old and hard to watch without some nostalgia, but they generally know how to do just enough to give the people who are still into them what they want. DMT Azul is a guy who struggles working with guys his own age and hasn’t seemed adaptable. He’s in the match because promoters believe him to be a star but he’s a terrible fit for that match. It may just be bad, or it may be just the worst. The semimain too are two teams who are used to primarily doing their own style of matches and those aren’t really the same style; Los Macizos are more likely to adjust than Los Golpeadors. Fantasma de la Opera seems like he runs this promotion and has been around wrestling for a lot longer than I have, so maybe he’s seeing something here (like his fans just want to see the names and don’t care how they do) to put this together, but this has a chance to be a memorably poor show.

Other News

The Mexicali Box y Lucha commission suspended Hijo del Fishman for a year for an attacking local referee Peluche (Edgar Ramirez) on 02/19. Not sure what exactly happened. I’ve only found clips of the match and the referee who starts the match is not the one who ended it, but haven’t discovered why. I’m way behind on cataloging videos and it’s probably out there on one of them.

The RGR shows in the Los Angeles area this weekend seemed to do well; the Friday show was a sell out. PWR in Saturday also was said to do well.

Ciudad Juarez wrestler Hijo del Impostor will be now wrestling as Hijo del Cobrade, both name used by his father though Cobrade was the more important name. Another son had been wrestling as Hijo del Cobrade, though he hasn’t been wrestling much.

In Guadalajara, Demencia took Olimpo’s mask on Friday. Olimpo is Cuauhtemoc Mendoza, 9 years a wrestler, from Guadalajara.

GALLI on 03/13 has Lince Dorado, Psycho Clown, Arez, Aramis and Hijo de Dos Caras.

KAOZ’s return show on March 27th has Alberto vs Konnan Big vs Carlito vs El Divo vs Rey Escorpion in the main event. A lot of random tags underneath with Chris Masters also booked.

Robles Promotions is advertising Dragon Lee, La Bestia del Ring, Dralisitco and two mystery LFI members soon. Dragon Lee and Dralistico had already said Dementor and Rush were coming to the promotion and Rush is advertised for a 04/30 Robles show in Merida, not sure why it’s a mystery. Rush getting in on the Robles money train does explain why he’s probably not been in a hurry to pick up work in AAA or elsewhere.

MLW says they’ve signed Microman to a multi-year deal.

Komander is off, Aramis is on for RIOT’s La Rina tournament

Box y Lucha 3502 has Atlantis Jr. & Mercurio on the cover.

Segunda Caida watches some 1994 CMLL in Los Angeles matches.

Torneo Increible de Parejas tonight, Gallito out of CMLL, AAA Showcenter kickoff lineup

CMLL has their Torneo Increible de Parejas tournament tonight. It’s just a one night tournament after being three weeks every past year. Like every other Friday night show, it’ll air on Ticketmaster Live for 99 pesos.

The Torneo Increible de Parejas has become the most meaningful of CMLL’s numerous tournaments. It’s not because winning means any more than the rest; if you can remember Templario & Volador Jr. won last year, you’re in a special minority. It’s become important the main events tend to be good, and because CMLL’s used it to set up big matches for the rest of the year. I’m not sure if the main event will be as good – one-night tournament blocks make everything worse – but there’s a chance it may be a set-up. Breaking it down by potential:

probably not going to an apuesta match any time soon

  • Hechicero & Sagrado – why are they teaming anyway? neither is a tecnico
  • Soberano & Templario
  • Caveranario & Titan – both of these would be very good but it seems unlikely anyone involved would want to lose
  • Euforia & Ultimo Guerrero – Euforia would be great in a big apuesta match but can’t see them doing it with him and Ultimo Guerrero; it was a surprise CMLL even went back to that feud
  • Mephisto & Volador Jr. – it feels like there are been 10 years of “maybe this will be the year where Mephisto has the big mask feud”

possible

  • Negro Casas & Blue Panther – they’ve done this before! CMLL would get roundly mocked if they put Negro Casas in another hair match, not that they seem to care. It’d be an economic way to have a big match that would appeal to nostalgia. There’s nothing CMLL likes more right now than appealing to nostalgia.
  • Averno & Mistico – speaking of nostalgia. They’ve both early wanted to do it before, really want to do it now since they’ve both come in to CMLL. Everyone would know the finish and most people wouldn’t care. Probably a bit more expensive than the previous match.
  • Atlantis Jr. & Stuka Jr. – it probably wasn’t meant to be as heated as it turned out at the end of Reyes del Aire. Sometimes you back into good ideas and this would be a good idea. It’s also the match that likely requires the biggest guarantee of these three matches

Nothing much is going to happen if CMLL is under capacity limits and/or COVID remains bad enough that people don’t want to go to lucha libre shows. It seems like things are going better on that front, but nothing’s a sure thing. If there’s a big development with any of those three feuds, particularly the last two, then maybe that’s a sign of a more active summer. I don’t count on this show being as fun as last week, it just has a chance to be newsworthy.

The rest of the show includes a Dark Silueta title defense against Lluvia (title change unlikely), Dark Magic joining Ola Negra against Los Canceberos, and Suicida & Panterita del Ring Jr. versus Electrico & Halcon Suriano Junior. These tecnico/tecnico openers feel like a response to AAA’s heavy action opening matches but haven’t achieved at the same level yet. Matches from this show will go up on YouTube in two weeks.

ESTO has an interview with Atlantis Jr., where he’s pretty sure Stuka Jr. is going to betray him tonight. He is correct, that’s what this tournament is. The news is this interview was done in person at Arena Mexico, which I believe is the first time CMLL’s done the weekly media day as in-person event in two years. There have been hints all month that CMLL is rolling back its COVID restrictions and this is another one. I don’t know enough to know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, just a thing that is happening.

Averno also did interviews, though the thing that stuck out to me is how much he’s grown out his hair (and made sure we all saw it by keeping it in front of his face on photos.)

CMLL (SUN) 02/27/2022 Arena México
1) Kaligua & Pequeño Magía vs Pequeño Olímpico & Pequeño Polvora
2) Cachorro, Diamond, Sangre Imperial vs Grako, Inquisidor, Raider
3) Guerrero Maya Jr., Hombre Bala Jr., Magia Blanca vs Hijo del Villano III, Misterioso Jr., Okumura
Hijo del Villano replaced Nitro on Friday
4) Dulce Gardenia, Espíritu Negro, Rey Cometa vs Pólvora, Rey Bucanero, Sagrado
Rey Bucanero replaced Hijo del Villano III (moved down) on Firday
5) Atlantis, Místico, Titán vs El Coyote, Felino, Negro Casas

Misterioso is back. Coyote is still headlining, though it’d be weird if any of the guys in the original semimain were in his place. Maybe Rey Bucanero fits but I’d rather see Coyote in 2022, as strange as it is. Also strange is Nitro being removed from the card – he’s usually added to shows. He’s still listed as wrestling on Saturday as of Friday at noon.

CMLL (TUE) 03/01/2022 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Atilius & Rey Uranio vs Aurelius & Maximus
2) Cosmos, Micro, Último Ángel vs Destello, Gran Kenut, Jabalí
3) Furia Roja, Guerrero de la Muerte, Ráfaga vs Joker, Omar Brunetti, Vaquero Jr.
4) Gallo vs Rey Trueno
5) Ángel Rebelde, Halcón Negro Jr., Trono vs Crixus, Difunto, Zandokan Jr.
6) Exterminador © vs Bestia Negra [OCCIDENTE HEAVY]
first defense

Not sure if the end of that main event feud is a title match or if it’s just a stepping stone to a hair versus mask match. Gallo versus Rey Trueno was probably meant to be a tag rematch, but can’t after Flash got hurt this past week.

El Gallito announced he has left CMLL on his Facebook account Thursday. Gallito started as the mascot to Arena Coliseo Guadalajara luchador El Gallo, then became a general-purpose mascot when Gallo left that group for a time. He was brought into the main roster on Kid’s Day 2014 for the launch of the minis division, where he worked as the secondary tecnico to Microman. A running joke on CMLL Informa had host Julio Cesar Rivera & Gallito pretending to be father and son. Microman leaving seemed like it could’ve opened up a bigger role for him, but it shrunk instead. Gallito hadn’t wrestled for CMLL this year; he was booked for the 01/22 show but didn’t appear, and CMLL micros haven’t been around for weeks entirely. There’s probably not going to be a Microman like indie run for Gallito, but it’s not like he was getting a lot of work in CMLL as is.

The CMLL micros division has had some turnover: Microman, Gallito, and Guapito have all left. It seemed like Zacarias may have left as well though that’s not been confirmed. Mije hasn’t wrestled this year and goes long stretches between matches; age and injuries may have caught up to him there. The Micro Gemelo Diablos, Atomo, and Chamuel are listed in Puebla on Monday so they’re still around, and MicroAngel appears to be as well. CMLL can still have matches in this division, but just barely. The division would reach a five-year anniversary on 04/30 and I’m not sure if it’s going to make it that long.

Franco Colombo appeared at an event honoring older wrestlers and showcased a class of students. Colombo confirmed in an interview that he’d left CMLL, calling it a retirement. He’d been part of the programming committee since the late 90s, officially with Panico and Jose Luis Feliciano along with various and changing wrestlers; Colombo seemed to be the third most important staff member. Miguel Reducindo had written about the departure back in January, and this first with other reports of Julio Cesar Rivera being added to that department. Colombo’s been called the uncle of Rush/Dragon Lee/Mistico. Reducindo said they’re not actually related by blood, though I think everyone agrees they’re close. Colombo was there long before they were, or even their father was, but it probably made it tough when they all walked out of CMLL.

I didn’t catch Volador offering Mercurio a spot in Los Depredarors, but Mercurio says it happened and he’s thinking about it.

CMLL has a dedicated NFT Twitter account if that’s something you’re interested in. CMLL and their NFT account only seem to respond to each other, which feels faker than any wrestling match. One of the (few) followers lists themselves as the CMLL NFT community manager, so it’s at least not the same person talking themselves but also CMLL having a NFT community manager is unexpected.

La Jarochita appeared in a video from the Japanese embassy in Mexico, a discussion of the relationship between the two countries. Mil Mascaras also says hello in a brief video.

Guadalajara wrestlers passed along a missing person’s notice for local luchador Leo (Pedro Echeviste Armenta). Leo wrestled in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara off and on from 2009 to 2021 and was still active in other arenas.

Ultimo Guerrero, in promoting his new school, hyped Templario and Bandido as his trainees. It’s true, only notable in that Bandido appears to have been a banned term for CMLL wrestlers over the year lear. (It’s also notable in that this is not his first school, and that previously school is weirdly unmentioned in all the coverage.) The recent debut minis are pictured as Ultimo Guerrero students, which probably isn’t a coincidence.

AAA

One more new lineup, joining the 03/05 Ciudad Madero and 03/13 in Merida.

AAA TV (SAT) 03/12/2022 Showcenter Complex, San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo Leon
1) Reina Dorada vs Maravilla [Showcenter Tournament, torneo]
2) Baby Extreme, Dulce Kanela, Komander vs Dinámico, Emperador Azteca, Mamba
3) Taurus vs Hijo de LA Park [Showcenter Tournament, torneo]
4) Mr. Iguana, Niño Hamburguesa, Pimpinela Escarlata vs Abismo Negro Jr., Látigo, Toxin
5) Chik Tormenta vs Estrellita [Showcenter Tournament, torneo]
6) Laredo Kid, Myzteziz Jr., Octagón Jr. vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón
7) Hijo Del Vikingo vs Flamita [Showcenter Tournament, torneo]

This is the first of the (sort) of monthly shows in the Monterrey area. I’ve got it listed as TV though we really don’t know how it’s airing yet. Multimedios was involved in the promotion and I believe it’ll be taped. It’ll be something we figure out later, just as this tournament is something we’ll figure out later.

One thing we can figure out now is this is close to a regular TV taping, without as many guests appearances as Rey de Reyes. I’m not sure how well it’s going to draw at the expensive prices for this show, but thankfully that’s not my problem. Vikingo/Flamita could be good – Flamita’s leaned so much into the heel act that it’s not as much a guarantee as it would’ve been a couple of years back. Estrellita is officially in a match for the first time since returning at TripleMania, though she’s seemed to wrestle plenty. Monterrey’s Reina Dorada makes her AAA debut; she was associated with Cibernetico in KAOZ as part of the Klan Kaoz group. She and CMLL’s Stephanie Vaquer also tease being in a relationship on social media and in matches; I have no idea if they actually are, just they’re definitely playing it up like a wrestling angle. Ciber’s supposed to be making a special appearance on the show.

The Merida taping was originally at noon and now is at four, probably to accommodate the people who have to work both shows.

Deonna Purrazzo successfully defended the AAA Reina de Reinas championships on Impact last night against Lady Frost.

In the podcast mentioned the last update, Dorian Roldan said he thought fans in the US saw the Lucha Brothers as AEW wrestlers while fans in Mexico see them as AAA wrestlers. I’m not sure if that’s the case, but it’s at least debatable. They don’t appear to be AAA contracted wrestlers, at least since Penta & Fenix appears on the Robles show this past week (which seems off-limits in Mexico) for AAA contracted wrestlers and Penta is advertised for the 03/18 The Crash show.

Many AAA wrestlers (and recent ex-AAA wrestlers are working a weekend of shows in the Los Angeles area, starting tonight in Gilroy. They brought in so many people that those shows are going to draw very well at high prices to break even, and early ticket sales aren’t great.

The WON, in talking about the Business of the Business podcast with Dorian Roldan, was skeptical of AAA’s own plans to tour in 2023 but then did one of his vague statements where he’s clearly been told something by someone in AAA but can only hint at in such a way it’s tough to figure out what he’s talking about. “While that idea [US touring] sounds insane for 2023 and it may be, there is a deal they are working on which would make that far less insane […] it would be the best shot Mexican wrestling would have in the US market since the early 90s.” A TV deal with a major Spanish language station seems to fit that description, though I can’t be sure that’s it. AAA getting US Spanish language TV has been a white whale for many years. They’ve appeared briefly on US networks in the past but never a series that last more than a few weeks, outside of season 1 of Lucha Underground.

I think I’m streaming AAA on Twitch to see if we get the Arcano versus Arcano match, though that’s not completely locked in There’s no real reason to watch otherwise if you’ve seen Rey de Reyes.

The Lucha Libre en Tampico said they’d have big news on the 03/05 Madero taping at noon on Friday. Noon at Friday came and went, but that’s about normal for lucha libre timing.

GCW’s show tonight will include Dr. Wagner versus Homicide. Saturday’s show has Mascara Dorada versus Gringo Loco, in Dorada’s last of three announced matches with the group. The shows are $14 each or $23 for both.

Andrade faces Sammy Guevera tonight for the TNT championship on AEW Rampage.

IWRG says the Aster Boy vs Tonalli match will take place on next Thursday.

Microman’s debut airs on MLW last night.

RIOT announced Gringo Loco will debut on their 03/26 show.

John Hennigan, this time as Johnny Caballero, was announced for the 04/01 the WRLD on Lucha show. Laredo Kid will also be on the show.

KAOZ & Mas Lucha, who were already working together, announced they’re going to work together. KAOZ also announced Lady Flammer for their 03/27 show, so I guess AAA wrestlers are still allowed to work there. Euforia took 2/3. Atlantis Jr. unmasked Euforia

Atlantis was a tecnico going full rudo, talking about all the masks he wanted to take and including Mistico on that list. If they could just stick with him as a rudo, that would be great. Teasing matches with all of Euforia, Stuka, and Mistico suggests CMLL hasn’t really picked out a plan yet or hasn’t let Atlantis Jr. in it – there’s no consistency of vision found when CMLL has an actual direction.

The MarcaClaro mystery was solved; it was the return of the Tuesday streaming shows, so someone put it on the right time but the wrong day. CMLL didn’t mention the stream existing until the moment the show started. Like in the past, it’s Mexico only by the apparent choice of MarcaClaro, and it’s unlikely that’ll ever be fixed. I’ve renewed the one Mexico VPN I can find that doesn’t block Mexico (40/year!) and put the matches up on the Google Drive. CMLL has been on and off MarcaClaro the last few months, so no telling how long this last.

The opener finish was odd. A missed foot on the ropes bit only happens in important matches and that was anything but. It wasn’t really played up post-match which challenges, but Retro immediately pointed it out, it was done in a way for the referee to point out and CMLL posted a photo explicitly pointing it out. We are seeing slightly different things in CMLL – these women 1v1 matches seem to exist just to do something different, not yet for a cage match – so maybe this is part of that? Or it’s just a weird bit?

Valiente Jr., talking in a post-match interview about one day teaming with his father, mentioned Valiente will be out for eight or nine more months. I had no sense his injury was that serious; I’m not even totally sure what it is.

Match fell apart at the end when Flash suffered an arm injury, landing awkwardly on a Trueno after a missed dropkick. Gallo and one of the Truenos pulled off their mask at the same time for the DQ to get out of it, which didn’t seem like the intended finish.
5) Bestia Negra b Exterminador
Bestia submitted Exterminador and challenged him to a title match.
6) Zandokan Jr. b Principe Daniel © [OCCIDENTE MIDDLE]

Guadalajara/Fuego en el Ring posting results seems to be over and so that’s extra time for me on this show every week. Having to watch it myself did have the benefit of seeing the remarkable freak injury in the fourth match, which seemed like the fault of the Trueno for not moving in the right spot for the missed dropkick.

Vampiro was in the crowd at the show and pointed out by the announcers. I presume he was there just as a fan, he must be living in Guadalajara again. I wouldn’t ever rule out Vampiro somehow getting another job in wrestling. He’s really good at getting unlikely jobs, it’s doing them where the difficulties sometimes arrive.

I think this is a match too long to give everything justice in terms of time, especially given this is a tournament final and not a block final. It’s CMLL, what are you going to do, the priority is to hit a monthly number of matches for all the wrestlers over putting on good shows. It will be fine, it will leave you wishing it could be a little bit better.

Always bet on it being a Volador singles match. CMLL’s highlights of last Monday’s show had a Mistico/Averno feud instead, so that’s a change. CMLL appears to be doing highlights of either Puebla or Coliseo each week, but I’m probably detecting a pattern when there’s just randomness.

Efekto10 talked to Arena Puebla mask seller, who says business has been about 60-70% of normal since the latest restart. She believes that the decrease is due to a lack of a star to drive interest; she hoped Mistico coming in that night would help.

CMLL Informa has Atlantis Jr., Stuka Jr., Lluvia, Esfinge, Mercurio and Valiente Jr.

AAA

Dorian Roldan was on the Business of the Business podcast, talking about AAA’s business for about 45 minutes. It’s well worth your time if you care about these things, both for additional context and because I’m not going to cover everything said there. If you’re going to quote something out of this for your own publication, you should both credit that podcast and also listen to it yourself.

A significant chunk of the podcast talked about AAA’s US aspirations. Dorian Roldan believes AAA has two audiences in the US, a general wrestling market and a US Hispanic nostalgia fanbase, and their goal is to try and the goal is from both. Roldan thought AAA went too big in the Madison Square Garden show and that AAA could find better success running smaller (and less expensive) buildings and other locations. Chicago, Phoenix, “a tour in Texas” were all mentioned as possible locations (unclear if they were examples or plans), with the idea of running a couple of shows in the US and launching a live touring business in the US in 2023.

Dorian Roldan would also like to get AAA on TV in the US. He brought up existing TV partners they have and possible obstacles – WWE’s deal with NBC may prevent a Universo/Telemundo from bringing in AAA content – in getting something done. Later, when NJPW came up, Roldan pointed out that the viewership numbers that promotion is getting on its AXS TV return are equal or lesser than what Lucha Underground was getting on a weaker El Rey station. (That was also a now a few years back, and general viewership has on linear TV in that time.) Roldan spoke positively about NJPW and said their AEW alliance was a great way to get people into their product. Still, it came off like he believed AAA is a significantly more valuable property than NJPW in the US, feeling the Hispanic culture is a bigger part of the US than Japanese and that gives AAA more potential for growth. That TV product could be something other than a traditional wrestling show: Roldan suggested the idea of producing a docu/reality series or a movie or something else a little more adjacent to wrestling promotion. He mentioned working with Disney+ on content (maybe the ex-Blue Demon series?) and another deal to be announced with someone else in the next few weeks.

One of the more interesting answers was when Dorian Roldan was asked about who the biggest star in AAA. Psycho Clown was his pick as the biggest name, but only in Mexico. He feels he’s a character that resonates with that market in the same way as La Parka AAA, but elsewhere Hijo del Vikingo or the Lucha Brothers are a bigger deal. This is where the two different audiences come up again: Roldan said the US names on Mexico shows are only to attract international audiences, not the local fans who are more into the local names. AAA’s PPV numbers are “totally different” with and without US names. “The American audience is not interested in watching just Mexican wrestling”, which was quite a thing to say given his position. I feel like I should argue with that but I also feel like the only Rey de Reyes thing that resonated to people who didn’t watch the show was “John Morrison had another new name.” There were no conversations about Dralistico’s performance, for example.

AAA does want to appeal more to foreign fans when they come to Mexico; they believe 40% of the fans who come to Arena Mexico are tourists. Dorian Roldan said they’d be opening a venue to run daily shows in the next few months to serve the market and hinted that it would be in a tourist destination, not necessarily Mexico City.

Some quicker stuff: Rey de Reyes attendance was 5,000. The high wind was as much an issue to the setup as the rain. Dorian Roldan talked up Konnan’s work, said it was a tough job, and called him the only person really working as a booker in Mexico. AAA’s open to work with any company that’ll make sense with their business. With other promotions, AAA gets US talent that helps be more international, their wrestlers can get a bigger payday and are happier. AAA can’t compete with WWE or AEW contracts, but they can closer with AAA + a US company. WWE’s talked to them in the past, most recently around the start of Lucha Underground, but probably aren’t going to share talent and don’t seem interested in acquisitions at the moment. (“Visions weren’t aligned” with The Crash.)

Partnering with other types of business has worked. TripleMania Regia has been a success and credits that through the partnership with Multimedios. They’re partnering with the Xolos owners in Tijuana, hoping for the same. Reading between the lines, it sounded like the TripleMania Tijuana show has a chance of being an annual event if successful. We’ve only seen “5%” of the Marvel Lucha Libre concept so far, which is the same thing Konnan’s said many times. AAA and Marvel are now aiming for the end of 2022/early 2023 to show the full concept (moved back from Q1 2022.) And, most importantly, the AAA YouTube channel should be back on a worldwide basis “soon.” Individual links work but the full channel is still regionlocked to Mexico.

On the Japanese/Mexico thing, my one take is “lucha libre” is 100% a more appealing concept to a super casual wrestling fan than “puroresu” and even more so for non-wrestling fans. At the same time, “NJPW” means exponentially more than “AAA”, because NJPW’s reputation is good shows and AAA’s reputation is a mess. NJPW, mostly its Japanese branch, is not especially good now but their reputation is still fine at this point because of the years of better shows that came before it. People are still willing to take a bet on them. AAA doesn’t appear interested in improving its reputation and it could be holding them back.

IWRG said they were only going to run on Sundays for this month, so this is an unexpected show. I think there still is a Sunday show this week, but not sure. The main event on Saturday is FILL versus NGT, the short-lived Tuesday shows. A lot of other trainees on this show. I presume IWRG is about to start booking people off the Tryout series, which would likely mean fewer spots for these guys.

MLW tomorrow has Arez, Gino Medina, Mini Abismo Negro versus Aramis, El Dragon, and the debuting Microman. Microman is both a surprise and also not a surprise because MLW is already selling meet and greet tickets for Microman in Dallas. You can meet Cesar Duran as well.

Pagano will also be in Dallas for WrestleMania weekend; he’s announced for The Wrld on Lucha show on 04/01. Drago Kid is also announced. People on that show are likely to be part of the AAA show on 03/31.

NJPW announced TJP versus Mascara Dorada for Tampa on March 20th.

RIOT confirmed their La Rina tournament will now take place on March 25th and March 26th. Hopefully everyone who was scheduled can still make it; March 26th is also the AAA taping in Tijuana.

17:35. Team Mistico took 2/3, winning clean.

This was a fun Friday show. Vikingo’s match on Saturday will stick with me more than anything on this show, but I was also definitely happier after finishing watching CMLL than AAA. (And it was 1/4th the cost.) Mistico & Templario and Volador & Averno was good fun; nothing revolutionary and Mistico & Averno showed their age, but they did a lot of stuff and kept the crowd exciting. The Panther/Casas match was a flashback to the recent Tuesday main events where Blue Panther knew just how to get reactions of those tourists crowd. Both family teams are better as teams than as individual parts. Even the overly long women’s match was better than usual.

Angel de Oro versus Mephisto was nothing special, nor was it expected to be. Angel de Oro is a rudo on most shows, worked as a tecnico here, and was rejected by the crowd who cared. I don’t think it helps for Angel de Oro to not have a set alignment, but I guess I can’t blame the reaction on that – he started working rudo because the fans had already rejected him, just nothing’s changed it. It was just weird they worked a match pretending that wasn’t going to happen. It might have worked with a tourist crowd that didn’t have history with Angel de Oro, because he was doing the generic stuff a tecnico should do, but that’s not who CMLL is drawing these days.

Blue Panther, who used to say he’d retire after all his sons got started in the business, now says he wants to keep wrestling because all his sons are in the business. He’s essentially not planning to retire until/unless a major injury forces him it; he said elsewhere that he would not retire until he died. Given no wrestler sticks to a retirement plan, I expect he’ll somehow still be wrestling after death. His dream is to team with all four sons. Blue Panther Jr. hasn’t wrestled since September and there’s no public info as to what happened to him, just one report he was taking care of a long-standing medical issue.

Oro seemed to pick up a left elbow injury, or maybe shoulder? Both of his arms hit the mat hard on a back bump. It doesn’t stick out to me on video as something gruesome, but there’s an immediate signal for medical attention.

CMLL getting behind Rugido seems so random. Maybe it makes sense in the building and it just hasn’t come across on screen.

Coliseo drew really well for this show. There didn’t seem to be an obvious one-night reason, which makes it an even better result for CMLL.

Atlantis/Stuka keep their issue alive going into Friday’s tournament.

The CMLL minis championship doesn’t seem to mean much to CMLL, though I’m sure it meant the world to Mercurio to get the win. That was Mercurio’s fifth challenge over the last two (long) reigns. More a happy accident than a likely plan, but Mercurio won just about every singles match he was in during the pandemic no-fans era – he was 9-1 in those, so there’s a story to this win if they had told it.

CMLL having two minis matches on one show is extraordinarily rare.

Tonight’s Puebla show has a Mistico, Star Jr., Volador versus Averno, Cavernario, Templario main event, a rematch from last week. Always bet on a Volador Jr. singles match.

MarcaClaro’s YouTube page lists a CMLL show on Friday night, available in Mexico only. It’s probably not the happy return of Friday streaming shows. The broadcast is listed at 7 pm CT, an hour and half before CMLL’s live show begins. Unless that changes, that’s probably one of the TV shows being put up on the internet. CMLL still has Friday’s show as a TicketmasterLive show and they’re probably not going to let someone stream it for free. I’ll check on Friday to see if that’s a show we already get.

CMLL put 03/18 Homenaje a Dos Leyendas tickets on sale this past week. In a true rarity, prices appear to be going down. The high ticket is the same 1200 for last year (held in September as a makeup) and the low ticket is 240, down from last year’s 300. Only the main bowl tickets are on sale, the upper level is not available so far. It’s hard to know exactly what that means as far as main event, because the pandemic has stripped a lot of context in what CMLL will do. A medium-level hair match still seems much more likely than a Stuka/Atlantis mask match in March.

An interview with Milenio mentions CMLL plans a second wave of NFTs during the first quarter of 2022, which seems to mean soon if I can read a calendar. The ones available now focus on moves, these will focus on masks. Alexis Salazar, CMLL’s lead photographer and social media community manager, is presented as the person in charge of this initiative. Perhaps that why they’re pushed so hard on Twitter. I have not spoken to anyone who’s told me they’ve had an interest in these NFTs, which are simply digital certifications saying you own a copy of an animated video. I did hear from people who asked me politely to stop writing about it so much.

AAA

AAA TV (SAT) 02/19/2022 Estadio Universitario Beto Ávila, Veracruz, Veracruz [AAA, Lucha Central, thecubsfan, Voices of Wrestling]
1) Arcano Ii b Arcano
shown in progress on the FITE stream, perhaps airing later. A complete mystery why two different people with an Arcano outfit were fighting each other, or why one was helped by a Terror Purpura.
2) Taya b MaravillaLady ShaniFlammerKeyra [#1 Contenders, Reina de Reina]
12:06. Show opened with Fenix appearing to announce he was unable to wrestle but promised to return faster soon. He introduced the returning Taya (w/Penta), who appeared to be a tecnica and challenged Deonna even before the match. Keyra was added to the match for unexplained reasons. Flammer may have suffered an injury (or may have just sold her way to the back during a long Shani/Taya closing sequence; she was back out later.) Taya beat Shani to win the title. Hijo del Tirantes slow counted Shani at times for no apparent reason, leading to an argument with Tirantes Sr.
3) Abismo Negro Jr., Látigo, Psicosis II b Mr. Iguana, Myzteziz Jr., Niño Hamburguesa
11:43. Prior to the match, Cibernetico and the Vipers came out to talk. Pagano interrupted and got beat up. Myzteziz replaced Willie Mack (wrestled in Impact instead.) Vipers won cleanly.
4) Arez & Chik Tormenta © b La Hiedra & Villano III Jr. and Octagón Jr. & Sexy Star II [AAA MIXED TAG, lumberjack]
11:17. Announced as non-title, ran as an AAA MIXED TAG title match without a given reason. Also a lumberjack match for no given reason. Arez beat Sexy Star. Empresa attacked Hiedra after the match.
5) Hijo de LA Park, LA Park, LA Park Jr. DQ Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón and DMT Azul, Puma King, Sam Adonis
15:13. Microman was the new member of La Empresa, with the idea that he didn’t actually want to be part of Empresa and wouldn’t help them cheat, eventually breaking up a pin. NGD & Empresa worked together until it came to deciding who would win. Parks won by DQ for no reason anyone understood. Los Mercenarios (Hiedra, Villano and Rey Escorpion in his only appearance on this show) brawled with La Empresa repeatedly after the match in an incoherent segment.
6) Psycho Clown b Laredo KidBandidoCibernéticoHeavy Metal [Rey de Reyes]
10:15. Timed entry rules (1 minute intervals) where the winner was the first person to get pinned (so the match could’ve ended before all the people were out.) Match started with Laredo Kid & Bandido, followed by Psycho Clown, Cibernetico, and surprise Heavy Metal. Pagano hit Cibernetico with a chair to set up a Psycho Clown win.
7) Pentagón Jr. b Dralistico
13:26. Advertised as Lucha Brothers versus Dragon Lee & Dralistico. Fenix could not wrestle due to injury, not announced ahead of time. Dragon Lee was there and didn’t wrestle, no reason give, but he ran out late to interfere. Pentagon cradled Dralistico for the win, who kicked out anyway. Dragon Lee & Dralistico beat up Penta after while security held back Fenix from making the save. Dragon Lee & Dralsitico challenged Fenix & Penta and FTR.
8) John Superstar b Hijo Del Vikingo © [AAA MEGA]
Hijo Del Vikingo © b John Superstar [AAA MEGA]
13:45. first defense. Listed as John Hennigan, billed as John Superstar, called Johnny Superstar during the match. Hennigan tried to use a cameraman’s camera (who would not give it up) and then a small spotlight as a weapon, with Laredo Kid making the save. Vikingo won via rope walk inverted rana and el Cuerno del Vikingo to retain.

No matter what I or possibly you (if you’re also a primarily English-speaking person trying to follow lucha libre) might think is the biggest story off Rey de Reyes, the biggest story for those who speak Spanish appeared to be the reunion of the long time WWF/WWE commentary duo Hugo Savinovich and Carlos Cabrera. AAA brought on Cabrera at the beginning of the live part of the Space broadcast, and he sat in with Savinovich and Jose Manuel Guillen for the rest of the show. Savinovich’s Lucha Libre Online spoiled the news earlier in the day, then deleted it. Reports were Cabrera didn’t seem familiar with AAA at all but most were just delighted to hear the announce team of their youth reunited.

All three announcers did an interview posted on Mas Lucha’s channel, mostly talking about the surprise of WWE letting go Cabrera and the happiness to reunite the team. It sounded like Cabrera is around for the long haul, not just a one-off. Savinovich makes a big pitch for them to be the TV Azteca announcers as well; that station uses it’s own announcers for AAA and did so back when they had WWE. (There were plenty of fans asking to hear the ‘real’ WWE version at that time too.)

It’s too bad they got reunited for such a mess of a show. A lot of the problems of AAA came to a head in one show:

  • AAA has prioritized booking as many people as possible, leading to matches overstuffed with people where it takes a miracle for it to come off well.
  • AAA has too many people who are apparently refusing to lose, or need some interference losses, so there were terrible finishes up and down this card. AAA is unable to get these people to agree to lose.
  • AAA doesn’t respect the people who pay to watch or attend their shows, and so will take their money rather than admit when they’re not going to be able to deliver on a promise.
  • There is so much stuff – just STUFF – going on that nothing sinks it or means anything; even the stuff with the more important guys at the end is just another angle after you’ve seen half a dozen.

It’s really great that AAA is heavily recruiting talented wrestlers, but they serve no purpose if they’re getting in the ring for two minutes in a nine-person match. I’ve really enjoyed the work of Dragon Lee over the years, but there’s no point in booking the Munoz family if they’re refusing to lose in any meaningful way. You can’t book a Lucha Brothers/Hermanos Lee match to chase star ratings if you can’t get a finish out of it, it’s never going to work the way you want. The Fenix situation was completely inexcusable, something the promotion should be apologizing for, will not apologize for, and will wonder later why everyone keeps them at an arm’s reach. (If a PPV purchaser were sufficiently motivated, you probably could go to FITE and argue for a refund for not delivering that match.) It was nice to see Heavy Metal and seemed in good shape for a legend, and he was also around for so little time that I don’t think anyone’s going to remember he was there.

Vikingo/Johnny was really good, maybe Great considering the stuff they did near the end of the match would’ve been crazy even if there wasn’t a downpour. Dralistico/Pentagon was fine, with a lame finish and insulting sell to build up a match everyone watching the show had already been promised to see. (If that was the best finish they had, why not just do it with Dragon Lee and Penta? Or should we assume Dragon Lee wouldn’t even agree to the “I’ll get rolled up but kickout before three” finish Dralistico did?)

The women’s match was hard for me to follow, that’s mostly because FITE played the Spanish and English feeds over the top of each other for the first 45 minutes and it was incredibly distracting. The match on its own was anticlimatic – Taya’s promo (and the lack of anything for the other women) made it clear to everyone Taya was winning, and there was no time to breathe before the Tirantes/Tirantes stuff started again. Like with Fenix, AAA clearly knew Willie Mack was going to Impact instead and kept advertising him anyway – even sent out a graphic with him in the match as it was going on! – and the match was very up and down. The mixed tag match had people trying in a completely unwatchable situation. The three way trios match was never going to work on paper – Parks aren’t going to take a loss, NGD aren’t going to take a loss, and AAA doesn’t want Empresa to take a loss – and came off worse in reality. The Microman turn bit was too clever by half, there was no reason to care about him being with Empresa or turning on them because he’d never been seen before. Only people insanely dedicated to watching all of AAA’s social media had any idea what was supposed to be happening there, and anyone that dedicated would also notice all of the rest of AAA didn’t make any sense. You can’t do subtle bits in a promotion where you’re also telling people not to pay attention to the big parts not working. The Rey de Reyes match was rushed and incomplete; you could tell someone believed Laredo & Bandido could save it if they were just allowed to have their own match and nearly did, but they were also just non-factors by the end to get over another feud so it didn’t feel like meant anything.

This criticism is all probably going to be interrupted as a shot at Konnan. I don’t think this is all Konnan’s doing. I have followed Konnan and his tastes long enough to guess that a lumberjack strap bit being added is something he’d hate as much I hated. He’s not blameless either, for sure. Mostly I don’t really care to try to figure out who is responsible for what, I just know that “AAA” is responsible and AAA needs to get better.

I didn’t think Rey de Reye was good, clearly. I don’t have much hope for TripleMania Monterrey after this one either. We know there are four matches in the mask tournament booked. I’m not sure how AAA is going to convince half of those guys to lose if they can’t convince Dralistico to take a three count. Four matches also means that’s about half the card, which means AAA either has to tell a lot of people “sorry, you’re sitting this out”, or there’s going to be even more multi-man matches that devolve into nonsense. There’s no reason to have confidence in AAA addressing their issues. The best case is more like “maybe the Monterrey Showcenter singles tournaments will be more hands-off like the other tournaments they’ve run and more focused on regular AAA wrestlers who will be willing to lose” or “perhaps Tijuana only having two tournaments matches will give more breathing space.”

The FITE broadcast of the show started with two people in matching Arcano (Marvel Lucha Libre Spider-Man) outfits fighting each in mid-match, in something that was probably meant to be a dark match but AAA both ran late and didn’t tell someone to hold off starting the stream. That’s was a good sign about how the night was going to go.

Pagano, Rey Escorpion, and Dragon Lee were all flown to Veracruz not to wrestle. Someone in a Terror Purpura/Thanos outfit – the latest guess is Parka Negra – also was just there to do a run-in as well. AAA certainly had the bodies to do a Dragon Lee/Dralistico vs Penta/ANYONE match if they wanted to.

It rained all night in Veracruz. There have been shows with worse storms and it never seemed close to being stopped. It was still plenty to affect the performances. Vikingo noted the bad weather condition hampered movement on the show and was happy no one got hurt. AAA had no covering over the ring for this show, which is typical for their events. They have two more major outdoor shows this year and having some way to cover the ring at least on those events seems like it’d be a good idea. It’s just another issue AAA’s never been motivated enough to solve.

Vikingo also mentioned in that interview that he’s still waiting for Kenny Omega. He’s going to have to wait a while longer. In an interview with WOR, Omega said he’s farther away from returning than hoped and is going to be out about two more months due to hernia surgery. It’s not clear yet when he’ll be able to have that surgery, so the wait could be longer than that. It’s unlikely he’d be ready for TripleMania Regia. Maybe Omega/Vikingo will happen on the TripleMania Tijuana show, though it seems less likely the longer it gets put off. It didn’t come up in that podcast.

AAA’s referee brigade at the moment

  • Hijo del Tirantes, who cheats the rudos at times
  • Tirantes Sr., who is there to get himself over (and good at it)
  • Piero, who seems to have an injury making him unable to count normally

I’m not sure if Copetes is still around, and he was also doing rudo referee spots last we saw him. I’m sure AAA could find another person to referee a match, maybe even a normal person might count at a normal speed, and that they instead have a guy going out there whose counting arm doesn’t appear to be working.  Maybe is says something about how fiercely people in AAA protect their spots. I hope Piero gets better both because I’d like him not to be in obvious discomfort and also because it’s embarrassing for AAA as it is.

Hijo del Tirantes did all the usual bits he does with Faby Apache with Lady Shani instead on this show. (Shani isn’t as skilled at playing to the crowd on them.) Almost everyone else of Faby Apache’s generation has left AAA at some point, and AAA & Apache have had points where they seemed unhappy with the relationship. It feels inevitable she’ll be out the door at some point, but it’s felt inevitable for years and it hasn’t happened yet. She’s listed on the Merida taping, though we just saw that being listed doesn’t mean much.

Fenix had also been scheduled for the Robles Promotiones show on Friday and appeared there to say he was unable to wrestle and would not wrestle on Rey de Reyes as well. It wasn’t a secret Fenix wasn’t going to wrestle, it was just a problem AAA wasn’t interested in addressing.

AAA really pushed a Cibernetico/Pagano feud, so some big match between the two must be planned. There were so many other things going on that I don’t know that it connected with people at all. AAA will either keep doing and it’ll stick or they’ll just forget about it. In theory, AAA needs a lot of big matches for big shows this year, and Cibernetico agreed to do a hair match would go a long way to explain why AAA brought him back. (I’d still think Pagano is more likely to lose if it comes to it.)

On Facebook, Forastero called his match one of the worst he’s been in because people didn’t know what they were doing and challenged LA Park and his family to an extreme match. Neither of teams are likely to agree to lose in a match like that.

Joe Dombrowski and Larry Dallas did a good job as English announcers with a show that was incredibly tough to keep up with, once they got their own audio track. Their best work was on the final two matches, where they actually had time to do more than talk and fewer people to introduce. I hope AAA and FITE sticks with them for the long haul, they’ll surely get better the more chances they have to call AAA, and the more time English fans get to hear AAA in their language and know who these people are. It was a really rough show for a newcomer. It’s a victory that I didn’t even have to write about them until this far down, it’s nice to have one problem solved.

AAA’s next taping is March 5th, in Ciudad Madero. That’s a week from Saturday. AAA hasn’t said anything about streaming the show, though the Merida taping indicated it AAA would be streaming shows. Madero is another show just overstuffed with people, which might mean good matches but definitely will mean utter chaos and some disappointments.

The 03/13 Merida promoters put out their poster after a delay, and it’s unclear why there was a delay: It’s the same card they had for the 01/30 show, down to La Hiedra being replaced by a surprise wrestler. AAA cleared that up by just putting Hiedra back in the lineup, but there’s no reason to trust AAA feels any requirement to deliver a lineup they advertised months ago. Fenix would have to beat his month more recovery time to be there. There’s also no reason to trust that Lucha Brothers/FTR match will happen unless we get more information closer on, like Fenix saying he’ll be there.

That Hiedra injury appeared to be dropped on Rey de Reyes, and she might be back in the match. The local promoters just took the old graphic and threw a new date on it. There’s no reason to trust this means the Fenix/Penta vs FTR match will be happening unless we get more information.

Psycho Clown and Andrade had a Twitter back and forth on Sunday night, Andrade calling Psycho Clown’s Rey de Reyes win another “gift” from the promotion, Psycho taking issue with that and asking Andrade who he ever beat, and an arguing who’s mask/hair is worth more. AAA teased a match between the two last May when Andrade debuted in the promotion and may have been planned for TripleMania Regia at one point. The timing and style suggest AAA’s trying to set up that match again.

Arturo Rivera’s daughter told TV Notas that Rivera died of multiple organ failure. He had heart issues many years ago, kidney issues more recently then caught pneumonia.  He fought until the end, and his family got to say goodbye before he passed away. Arturo Rivera was honored both at the Robles show and the AAA show this weekend, including a great highlight video.

The Crash

The Crash (FRI) 02/18/2022 Auditorio de Tijuana, Tijuana, Baja California [TJ Sports]
1) Kamik-C & Skalibur b Lazer & Mirage
Mirage replaced Terror Azteca
2) Black Danger, Dinámico, Oráculo b Black Destiny, Emperador Azteca (Indie), Komander (INdie)
3) Próximo b Toto
The 4:20 Brothers (Skalibur & Kamik-C) helped Proximo win
4) Arandú, Star Boy, Zarco b Súper Astro Jr., Trauma I, Trauma II
Super Astro Jr. wore a Super Muneco tribute match
5) Rey Horus b Demonic Flamita
Jack Cartwheel was announced but didn’t appear. Flamita unmasked Horus after the match.
6) El Hijo Del Santo & Octagón b Fuerza Guerrera & Hijo del Fishman
Three falls (unusual for Crash), tecnicos took 2/3 with Octagon beating Fuerza and Fishman not returning after a Santo tope. Mariachis came out to honor Santo for his 59th birthday but Fishman attacked him. Mask match challenges followed.

Hijo del Fishman was a weird inclusion in the match but would make sense as a Hijo del Santo opponent. Even just a teased opponent; most of Santo’s feuds over the last decade haven’t really materialized. Santo returning to Tijuana did seem like a big draw: the Auditorio looks like a sell-out. They’ve got to bring back Santo more if he’s willing.

The next show is on March 18th, a week before AAA’s taping in the same building.

The Crash has not publically addressed its fallout with AAA, but there was other promotional news on this show. Monterrey’s Roberto Figueroa showed up to announce a partnership between The Crash & KAOZ. That news also meant KAOZ was no longer working with AAA after their wrestlers had been a significant part of their promotion in recent years. (A KAOZ video seems to confirm a break in the relationship; AAA was referred to as “another promotion” with some vague idea they might out do TripleMania Monterrey.) I’m not sure exactly what caused that falling out. Just like with The Crash, AAA’s worked with other promotions in Monterrey and will probably work with KAOZ again sometime down the road. Without AAA, KAOZ is now some ex-AAA guys (Charly Manson-types), some indie wrestlers, some Monterrey wrestlers, and some teases of bringing in Alberto.

Figueroa has shown up in The Crash to announce alliances with Monterrey groups prior – once, they were to going to be on the streaming network he was going to launch (and never really launched), so I don’t know that KAOZ/Crash stuff will end up meaning much.

Puma King replaced Toscano. The Sons of Samoa were advertised but didn’t appear. Whoever slammed Beast Mode would win 500,000. DMT Azul & Texano Jr. worked together to do it, then argued about the money and finally agreed to a match for it.
6) Dralistico, Pagano, Penta 0M b Gran Apolo, La Máscara, Scorpió Jr., Shocker Pagano, Penta 0M y Dralístico Vs Shocker, Scorpio Jr, La Máscara y Apolo lucha estelar de Robles (posted by La Tijera Lucha Libre)
Dralistico replaced Fenix (and Pagano announced as mystery person) on 02/04. Shocker and Scorpio replaced Scott Steiner. Dralistco fouled Mascara to win. Mascara bled during the match from a light tube. Dragon Lee, La Besita del Ring and Dementor attacked La Mascara, kicking him out of Los Ingobernables.

If you’re going to watch one match from the usual Robles spectacular, I would recommend the Beast Mode match. It’s not good, it’s just fun to see people who are not into bumping going down for the basketball player who seems barely trained. Paychecks are good. At least they have the good sense to build Beast Mode’s gimmick around him doing as little as possible. Everyone’s got have their cake and eat it too here just as much as AAA, so the Beast Mode bodyslam challenge doesn’t actually end with anyone bodyslamming Beast Mode. Puma and Azul lift him up and left him straddling on the ropes, he sits there doing nothing for a real minute while everyone else nonsense, and then Azul & Texano shove Beast Mode over, where he takes the gentlest bump possible. People in CMLL are of the opinion that they’re the true real wrestling and everything else is a circus. Often they think too highly of themselves, but these Robles shows are true circus stuff.

If you have AAA Billy Boy in your mind and you want to keep that as your image of him, do not look up the videos of the heavy Billy Boy who showed up here. Time comes for us all. Whoever’s in charge of booking for Robles, be it La Mascara or others, seems to be desperately trying to get as many friends a payday as quick as possible, as if even they belief this company isn’t going to be around for the long haul. This show didn’t draw well – between a third and a half of Juan de la Barrera – but that doesn’t appear to be a factor here.

Guapito last worked in CMLL in November, so he may have left a while back and we just didn’t pick up on it. La Mascara is now officially the leader of the Perra Sociedad instead of being part of Los Ingobernables. It appears to be a stable dreamt up by Robles himself and La Mascara is the face of the promotion, so of course he should be leading it. It was always weird that Scott Steiner was advertised for this show; I presume someone at some point talked to Steiner but who can even be sure.

The next Robles Mexico City show appears to be April 29th, with Rush appearing. That’s the first Rush known booking since he left ROH last year with a knee injury. I expect he’ll wrestle before then. It’s hard to tell with him right now.

Here’s a thing I don’t understand but am compelled by events to explain anyway. (Maybe that’s the whole blog.) If you look through the YouTube videos, there are multiple wrestler interactions with a man named Alfredo Adame. He is a 63-year-old actor and a TV host of some fame, though that’s not what he’s famous for at the moment. About a month ago, a video of Adame getting into a literal street fight with a man and a woman went viral. It’s short and wild enough without context, a famous person involved just made it bigger. Adame’s version is he was getting mugged, and he was just trying to get his phone back. I guess that’s possible, it just doesn’t seem like what’s happening in that video. Anyway, it’s 2022 so all publicity is good publicity and he was getting into skirmishes with people. (This isn’t even the only time he’s coming up with wrestling; Alberto joked on social media about booking Monterrey’s baseball stadium between Adame and old rival, which somehow got reported as news by outlets, who were less credible for doing so.) I’m not sure if this or Billy Boy is the better example of how Robles Promotions is just spending money to spend money.

6) Ciclón Ramírez Jr. & El Bandido b Demonic Flamita & Emperador Azteca and Dragón Lee & Dralistico
Extasis tried to interfere and got beat up by Black Generacion, sent to an ambulance.

I present these results mostly because I had thought that maybe AAA didn’t do Dragon Lee/Penta because Dragon Lee had some sort of injury. He wrestled here so nope. The Extasis injury angle was played up big, though I think Black Generacion turned face in some places by forcing a Skayde/Navarro match to happen.

Other News

Black Taurus lost to JONAH on the Impact PPV Saturday, as expected. Deonna Purrazzo defended the ROH title on the show, not the AAA one. Taurus had no significant involvement in the TV tapings that followed and Laredo Kid does not appear to have been brought in on those Sunday tapings.

Ringo Mendoza is on the cover of Box y Lucha 3501D.

Rey de Reyes Saturday (but probably without Fenix), CMLL announcements, The Crash

CMLL

Tonight’s CMLL show is hyped around an Angel de Oro versus Mephisto match, which might be the least interesting part of the show. Mistico & Templario versus Averno & Volador headline, a relevos increibles match the week before the relevos incredible tournament. That could be good. The Casas Famly versus Panther Family past meetings have been good and they wrestle here again. The women are in the segunda and perhaps we’ll find a destination. The opener reunites the Puebla trio (Pegasso, Stigma and Arkalis) against Electrico, Halcon Suriano Jr., and Panterita Jr., the guy who seems like he’d be much more exciting if he was in a promotion that used him more.

The show is the usual 100 pesos TicketMaster Live show and matches from the show will go up on YouTube in about two weeks as normal.

CMLL announced a lot of Informa. Next week’s Torneo Increíble de Parejas will be a one night tournament with eight teams:

  • Místico & Averno
  • Volador Jr. & Mephisto
  • Negro Casas & Blue Panther
  • Soberano Jr. & Templario
  • Titán & Cavernario
  • Atlantis Jr. & Stuka Jr.
  • Hechicero & El Sagrado
  • Último Guerrero & Euforia

I have some real questions about some of these teams: who’s the tecnico in Hechicero/Sagrado? Ultimo Guerrero & Euforia? Is Atlantis Jr. a rudo now? (Gran Guerrero would like him to make up his mind.) Putting that aside, cutting the size of this tournament in half makes for a much more star-laden field than usual. I’d be surprised if Sagrado won a tournament, though everyone else has a shot and might be interesting in the process. You shouldn’t expect too much out of CMLL tournament shows, but this one looks better than most.

CMLL also announced Homenaje a Dos Leyendas will take place March 18th, with Ringo Mendoza the wrestler honored alongside Salvador Lutteroth. Mendoza was a top and important star of the 70s and 80s (who hung around much longer than that), and absolutely is deserving of being honored in an event like this. His announcement is a surprise only in you’d be forgiven for thinking they already got to him.

There’s no obvious Homenaje a Dos Leyendas main event coming out of that pairs tournament; it feels too soon to do Atlantis/Stuka now after two weeks of nothing going on. Maybe there will be a women’s apuesta match and it’ll be more clear tonight, but the current CMLL crowd sizes suggest it’s more likely to be headlined by a title match or some other non-hair/mask encounter.

CMLL finished as the second-worst promotion in the WON’s fan vote awards. It was a far, far distant second to WWE. The WON is the only general wrestling award including readership who are going to even think about CMLL, but even then few of the audience actually watched it this year (or past years.) Everyone heard disappointing things, but I think the business going down is as big a factor as any bad match. The biggest factor is CMLL used to exist a show people would watch commonly on Friday nights and enjoy the matches sometimes, and now it’s something that doesn’t meaningful exist in that way. There are still free shows gong up on YouTube every Sunday afternoon, but there aren’t people gathering around to watch them, and CMLL only getting attention for parting ways with wrestlers surely didn’t help. CMLL’s internal viewpoint is they (and their loyal fans) are the only ones who truly understand what good wrestling is; they may bristle at getting this attention but it’s not going to change them in the least.

AAA

Fenix is unlikely to wrestle on Saturday’s Rey de Reyes. Today’s WON says he’s expected out at least a month. Returning in March remains great news given how ugly his arm injury looked when it happened. It also suggests AAA’s known Fenix was unlikely to wrestle on Rey de Reyes for a long time and has chosen not to say anything. I’d guess they won’t actually announce changes until they can run an angle on the show Saturday, but don’t buy the show if you’re doing just to see the advertised matches.

Most, though not all, promotions would let their fans know if one of the biggest wrestlers announced for a show would not be appearing. AAA is not one of those promotions, as we all well know by this point. There’s a certain benefit in being so chronically goofy, fewer people will be angry with AAA than if another group had pulled this. (Don’t get me wrong, people are still going to be angry.) AAA’s weirdness cushions the blow on this end, but it’s also the reason they don’t get as much respect or attention as they feel. Most keep them at an arm’s distance for good reason.

Rey de Reyes airs on FITE for 20 USD and starts at 8 pm CT on Saturday; that’s about the time AAA usually ends on Space. (That Space broadcast this week starts at 9:30 pm; Mexico viewers will get just the second half of the show live.) AAA big shows are usually interesting and often good, and I think this show should be the same even with whatever’s going on with Fenix. I wrote a longer preview for Voices of Wrestling, but it is generally the usual AAA product for good and bad. Taya seems certain to be the mystery person and I think there’s a good shot of Rush being the mystery guy in the Rey de Reyes match.

Beyond the false advertising bit, AAA not wanting to announce Fenix seems like it’s holding them up for advertising all their March plans. Hope it’s worth it to them, but that likely means a lot of announcements next week.

TripleMania Mexico City tickets went on sale today. (SuperBoletos links don’t always work, but you can also find it from their main page.) It seems way early to me to buy tickets for October 15th but they’re sure ready to take your money. Tickets are a record high of 8030 Mexican Pesos (395 USD), though that’s really just for a small section of pesos. More notable is the lowest price is now 440 MXN (22 USD); everything is more expensive this year around. AAA is expecting to have no problem with demand this year, be it from pandemic or disinterest. That potential giant gate does make it slightly more likely someone besides Villano IV will lose their mask; AAA could offer a big payday to anyone in that field, maybe the most ever if they choose.

If there’s one thing constant about Tijuana’s The Crash, it’s they can’t go long before without some drama in their inter-promotional alliances. The Crash is built on having as many big names as possible, which leads them to work with big promotions (mostly AAA), but also working with big promotions is forever full of drama and breakup. So it is again, as The Crash and AAA have split ways for the second or maybe the third time. AAA made an announcement, The Crash has said nothing This one was inevitable not just in the way that all The Crash breakup are inevitable, but specifically because Konnan was personally trying to work with both them and their Tijuana rival EMW. It would’ve taken a work of magic that even Konnan can’t produce to keep all sides happy, and maybe that’s the reason the news came out of his personal Twitter account rather than AAA themselves. EMW seems to be helping with the Tijuana TripleMania show, so AAA was going to side with them if something come up. Facebook page Zona Ruda notes Konnan & Dorian Roldan were spotted meeting with the Tijuana commission and EMW on Thursday about the Tijuana show and speculates something with that alliance caused this announcement a day later. They also speculate Crash using Santo & Octagon may have irked AAA; it’s a logical guess, given both have sued AAA. The exact details are probably not important, since they’ll be forgotten whenever AAA & The Crash decide the start working together again between now and 2024.

Various AAA wrestlers are current The Crash champions, which would be important if the titles meant a lot. Of bigger concern are wrestlers who are caught in the middle; Komander, Jack Cartwheel, Dinamico, and Flamita are booked for Saturday’s today’s The Crash show and future AAA TV tapings, and may feel pressure to not work both. Similarly, Bestia 666, Mecha Wolf, Rey Horus, and Damian 666 were working for both Crash & EMW and that may no longer be possible.

Black Taurus will not be at Rey de Reyes because he’s wrestling JONAH on Impact’s PPV the same night. Taurus willy likely have another good performance, lose, and then get back to being just a face in the mix. He (and Laredo) are firmly stuck in the tier of wrestlers who exist in Impact just to get other people over.

Deonna Purrazzo is also holding an open challenge for her ROH and AAA titles on the Impact PPV. No opponent has been named. Purrazzo did a similar bit a couple of weeks back where she defended the ROH title, so maybe this time is the AAA title. Faby Apache is noticeably absent from the Rey de Reyes lineup, so maybe it’ll be her, but that’s just a guess. I think there’s even a chance of a shock title change; it certainly feels like AAA’s lost interest in Deonna as champion.

Hijo del Vikingo won the WON Mexico MVP. No one is really clear what that award is supposed to mean, or if it means anything at all. It is essentially “who’s the most famous Mexican wrestler to this audience” of the year. Vikingo was the Tapatia MVP winner too, but I’ve not convinced this means a lot at this point.

Other News

Robles Promotions has done a lot of press leading up to their show tonight in Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera. Their past shows have not drawn well and there’s no reason to believe this will be any different, but they’re trying to conduct themselves like a major league promotion in hopes that implied credibility will draw people in. In an interview with Record, exotico Bugambila pushed the idea of joining Scorpio & Shocker’s reborn Guapos unit. The interview seems to confuse ex-Guapo (and deceased) Bestia Salvaje with (not deceased) Bestia del Ring, an unfortunate mistake. Guapito has been spotted promoting this show with the Robles promotions; he hasn’t wrestled in CMLL since November and may have moved on. Texano is part of a group of wrestlers trying to body slam ex-NBA player Beast Mode for a big cash prize; he’s joking he’ll use the money for a trip to Dubai when he pulls it off.  La Mascara claims he was going to retire before Robles Promotiones came along.

The biggest news in the Spanish-speaking wrestling space this week is WWE letting go of Carlos Cabrera. He’d been one of the most prominent Spanish voices for the promotion for 30 years. It appears to be WWE moving out an old announcer due to age, though I don’t think they can legally admit it. Cabrera is 62, which doesn’t seem as old the closer I get to it. Cabrera and Hugo Savinovich were the voices of WWE in Spanish in the 90s and 00s, as a definitive broadcast team for Spanish-speaking fans as Jerry Lawler & Jim Ross was during that time. It was no surprise Savinovich’s Lucha Libre Online was the first to have the news, and I’m as sure he’ll be pitching AAA and other places on reuniting the duo. (They’ve already announced they’ll be working together at LLO.) I like the current AAA setup with Hugo and Jose Manuel Guillen, but reuniting the famed WWE pair in AAA has to be tempting. (The addition of the Showcenter events may also provide tapings to cycle people in and out a bit.) I don’t watch AEW in Spanish, but I feel like I’m frequently told they could use improvement in that area. Cabrera might be a fit there, depending on the budget.

Mascara Dorada made a surprise appearance on Thursday night at NJPW (Strong)’s Rivals show in Los Angeles, running of TJP. A day earlier, NJPW announced Dorada would be returning to the promotion on their 03/20 show in Tampa, so pencil in a TJP/Dorada cruiserweight classic there. It is hard to miss NJPW, even just the US branch, bringing back in Mascara Dorada when they haven’t used a desperate to return Dragon Lee in a couple of years. Dorada’s also the first “CMLL” wrestler to participate in NJPW since the pandemic, though I’m using scare quotes because this is likely a direct NJPW/Dorada deal without CMLL being materially involved. Rey Horus worked NJPW Strong shows during their empty arena era and Misterioso has become a local regular; he challenged Dorada on Twitter.

I put this week’s IWRG lineup in the database but never posted it here:

IWRG (SUN) 02/20/2022 Arena Naucalpan
1) Sol & Spider Fly vs Águila Oriental & Súper Cometa
2) Artemiz & Bengalee vs Lolita & Satania
3) Hell Boy, Noisy Boy, Relámpago vs Apolo Estrada Jr., Billy Jones, Chris Stone Jr.
4) Asterboy vs Tonalli
5) Diva Salvaje & Jessy Ventura vs Alpha Wolf & Dragón Bane
6) Travis Banks vs Cerebro NegroZumbiDr. CerebroVenenoHip Hop ManShockoAction Jackson [Copa Internacional]

The main event is built around an international tournament, likely to set up a title match with Banks. Asterboy/Tonalli has a chance to be pretty good.

Ring of Honor held a video session on Wednesday, soliciting wrestler ideas for their Supercard of Honor. There were probably over a hundred names thrown out in an hour, and most of them will not be on the show. One potentially lucha libre relevant bit is ROH said they were unlikely to use international talent on that show. My presumption is we’ll be seeing a lot less Mexico-based talent in ROH going forward and that seems to fit. Bandido is scheduled for Supercard of Honor for the ROH title unification match and I’m sure he’ll be there, but I would only bet on seeing him there as long as he remains champion.

Charrito de Oro passed away on Wednesday. He was a luchador and a trainer, perhaps more known for people he’s related to (brother of Maria del Angel, brother-in-law of Bestia Salvaje) and taught (Mr. Niebla, Fuego, Shockercito, and Sangre Azteca, who announced the death on Facebook). Box y Lucha mentions he’d been in poor health for a while. An earlier post mentions Charrito de Oro helped Mr. Niebla come up with la Nieblina. The evaluators at Mr. Niebla’s licensing exam wanted each trainee to demonstrate their own unique hold, so Oro helped Niebla put together his knot hold that has been seen elsewhere.

San Luis Potosi luchador Gran Sebastian/Sexy Leonicto/Super Maquinita (Sebastián Plumajero, 61) passed away on Thursday. Sebastian was an early minis wrestler, a contemporary of names like Gran Nikolai and Pequeno Goliath and traveled to Japan. He wrestled in Pavillon Azteca in the 80s when it was the third strongest promotion in Mexico City and appeared in movies. He was a main character in the “El Rayo, Vida de Lucha” 2014 Mexicanal series on lucha libre in the San Luis Potosi area as someone who helped with running the shows. The friendship between Sebastian and Rayo de Plata was one of the key points of the series. I recall liking him on the show and it’s sad to hear he’s passed away.

Japan announced they’re easing entry restrictions for fully vaccinated business travelers, including cutting quarantine down to three days. There are still plenty of barriers for a FantasticaMania any time soon, but it’s a positive step towards that happening somewhere down the road.

Big Lucha posted another empty arena show, which appears to be the first in an ongoing series. These aren’t getting many views, though they do seem to have plenty of sponsors. They have a live event this Sunday with Emperador Azteca & Flamita versus Dragon Lee & Drasticio versus Bandido & Ciclon Ramirez Jr. and Arez versus Yutani

Mas Lucha staple Welcome to Mi Barrio returns on March 5th. They’ve been off since just before Christmas.

DTU says they’re running March 15th in Arena Aficion.

Cibernetico and Monterry lucha libre personality Roberto Figueroa are working a feud on Facebook, which probably has to do with KAOZ’s return show.

Imposible/Fuerza Guerrera NG claimed he didn’t rent that name from Fuerza Guerrera. He says he bought it outright, and so should have legal right to trademark if he so chooses. There is no way to get to the bottom of this situation without seeing the legal agreement (and also perhaps being a lawyer.) Public sentiment usually defends the older wrestler in these name cases, and Imposible seems to have decided he’ll be returning to that name.

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report.

Fenix/Rey de Reyes, Euforia/Atlantis Jr., plenty of lineups

CMLL

CMLL (TUE) 02/15/2022 Arena México [CMLLEstrellas del RingKaiser SportsMas Lucha]
1) Fantasy & Pequeño Magía b Angelito & Kaligua Pequeño Magia y Fantasy Vs Kaligua y Angelito en la Arena México del CMLL (posted by La Tijera Lucha Libre)
Fantasy & Magia, wrestling as rudos, took the opener.
2) La Metálica, Stephanie Vaquer, Tiffany b La Guerrera, La Magnifica, Marcela Marcela, La Guerrera y La Magnífica Vs Tiffany, Stephanie Vaquer y Metálica (posted by La Tijera Lucha Libre)
Rudas took 2/3. Metalica used the ropes to beat Marcela, setting up a rematch next week.
3) Flyer, Guerrero Maya Jr., Panterita del Ring b Dulce Gardenia, Espíritu Negro, Rey Cometa Panterita del Ring, Guerrero Maya Jr y Flyer Vs Dulce Gardenia, Rey Cometa y Espíritu Negro (posted by La Tijera Lucha Libre)
Team Maya took 1/3. Maya pitched challenging for tag titles with Pantera or forming a trio with his son
4) Gemelo Diablo I, Rey Bucanero, Sagrado DQ El Hijo del Villano III, Niebla Roja, Terrible Terrible, Niebla Roja e Hijo de Villano III Vs Sagrado, Rey Bucanero y Gemelo Diablo (posted by La Tijera Lucha Libre)
Team Sagrado took 1/3. His partner is listed as “Gemelo Diablo”, guessed to be I. Terrible DQed for using the ropes to foul Sagrado.
5) Euforia, Hechicero, Templario b Atlantis Jr., Cavernario, Último Guerrero Hechicero, Euforia y Templario Vs Último Guerrero, Atlantis Jr y Bárbaro Cavernario (posted by La Tijera Lucha Libre)
Team Euforia took 1/3, the last when Atlantis Jr. had Templario in La Atlantida but Euforia pulled off Atlantis’ mask and rolled him up.

Sorting through this: the Maya stuff is just random ideas to make sure his name gets in the paper. The Sagrado/Terrible finish is baffling, unclear if was the planned finish or a referee mistake, but seems bad either way. Euforia/Atlantis Jr. is just the singles match of the month.

Metalica/Marcela also is likely a singles match next week, and fits with Vaquerita/Isis as possibly a bigger match down the line (or maybe those two combined in some ways.) Even that much I’m not sure about, because CMLL doesn’t typically do feuds on Tuesdays to build up to a big show on Friday and none of the women’s issues have been played up on Friday so far. A commenter suggested maybe Vaquerita/Isis was just a feud to do a feud with no more meaning than that, I didn’t agree then, but I am starting to come around to the idea.

CMLL (TUE) 02/15/2022 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Arena Coliseo Guadalajara]
1) Destello, Ponzoña Jr., Relámpago Azul b Cosmos, Micro, Último Ángel
2) Náutica b Valkiria
3) El Divino, Luminoso, Mágico b Gran Kenut, Javier Cruz Jr., Quka
4) Crixus, Flash, Gallo b Joker, Omar Brunetti, Vaquero Jr.
5) Zandokan Jr. b Principe Daniel
Zandokan asked Principe Daniel for a OCCIDENTE MIDDLE match
6) Bestia Negra & Difunto DQ Exterminador & Maléfico [super libre]
Bestia Negra tossed his mask to Exterminador to draw the DQ the challenged him to a OCCIDENTE HEAVY match

Exterminador won that title in a 2019 tournament and has never defended it. I guess it’s time. Daniel won his title back in June from Difunto.

CMLL (FRI) 02/18/2022 Arena México
1) Eléctrico, Halcón Suriano Jr., Panterita del Ring Jr. vs Arkalis, Pegasso, Stigma
2) La Vaquerita, Lluvia, Princesa Sugehit vs Dalys, Dark Silueta, Reyna Isis
3) Blue Panther, Cachorro, Dark Panther vs Felino, Felino Jr., Negro Casas
4) Ángel de Oro © vs Mephisto [MEX LH]
first defense
5) Místico & Templario vs Averno & Volador Jr.

CMLL announced Friday/Saturday lineups on Monday, two days earlier than usual. It appeared CMLL was holding back lineups to wait for COVID test results, and I’m not sure if something’s changed by that.

Averno returns from his absence for a mixed tag main event the week before the mixed tag team tournament. Ah well, it might be good. Tercera and opener may be as well.

This is the only show in a 11 show Mexico City city stretch without the minis opening the show. They’re working a lot. The Micros were wrestling a lot, though not this match, and have not appeared this month.

CMLL (SAT) 02/19/2022 Arena Coliseo
1) Acero & Último Dragóncito vs Pequeño Olímpico & Pequeño Violencia
2) Oro Jr., Suicida, Valiente Jr. vs Disturbio, Grako, Nitro
3) Dark Magic, Guerrero Maya Jr., Volcano vs Kráneo, Okumura, Robin [Relevos Increíbles]
4) Dark Panther, El Audaz, Star Jr. vs Hijo del Villano III, Luciferno, Rey Bucanero
5) Magnus, Rugido, Volador Jr. vs Esfinge, Fugaz, Stuka Jr.

I was going through 1993 UWA lineups last month. The promotion was still around for a few more years, but that was the last year where they were running both Sunday shows at the Toreo de Cuatro Caminos bullring and at Arena Neza. It was the last year because they really didn’t have enough popular wrestlers to run a giant bullring, and definitely didn’t have the numbers to also run a second building in the Mexico State area the same night. It led to Arena Neza situations headlined by prelim opening match guys like Los Rayos Tapatios suddenly main eventing shows, because someone had to. It’s not a slight against them, those guys would be solid wrestlers for decades after that, but it didn’t seem to work because they weren’t built up to be stars and just putting them in the main event didn’t make them stars.

CMLL’s been in a similar place for a while, but it really sticks out with the main event. At least Fugaz got one title match showcase. Magnus has spent a decade as a forgotten prelim guy, only for CMLL just to point at him and say he’s good. Esfinge has been in the shuffles. It’s not their fault, it’s CMLL not doing the work to show these guys earning the spot that’ll cause fans to see this as a lesser main event. CMLL’s counterpoint are people are just coming to Arena Coliseo to see a lucha libre show and it doesn’t matter the star power of those in the main event as long as they’re CMLL quality. That strategy has not worked out as of yet.

CMLL (SUN) 02/20/2022 Arena México
1) Aéreo & Último Dragóncito vs Pequeño Olímpico & Pequeño Polvora
2) Halcón Suriano Jr., Leono, Sangre Imperial vs Akuma, Espanto Jr., Inquisidor
3) Shockercito © vs Mercurio [CMLL MINI]
7th defense
4) Atlantis, Esfinge, Hombre Bala Jr. vs Cancerbero, Luciferno, Virus
5) Fugaz, Soberano Jr., Stuka Jr. vs Atlantis Jr., Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero

Atlantis being in that semi-main looks weird, but they can’t put him in the main event against his son. Stuka is trying to keep the mask feud with Atlantis Jr. going. The minis title hasn’t meant anything and so a title change is totally possible.

CMLL (MON) 02/21/2022 Arena Puebla
1) Sombra Diabólika vs King Jaguar
2) La Magnifica & La Vaquerita vs La Metálica & Reyna Isis
3) Halcón Suriano Jr. & Suicida vs El Malayo & Espíritu Maligno
4) El Audaz, Fugaz, Stigma vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado
5) Místico, Star Jr., Volador Jr. vs Averno, Cavernario, Templario

That’s a main event rematch from the past week. Same tecnico side in the fourth match too.

CMLL Informa has Volador, Rugido, Magnus, Mephisto, Mercurio and Full Metal as guests. I’m not sure if Full Metal is a tecnico or a rudo, perhaps we’ll find out (or find out if that matters.)

Ultimo Guerrero is opening his own lucha libre school this Saturday. Skayde, Ricky Marin, Ultimo Dragoncito, Hechicero, Mictlan MX, and Robin are also listed as teaching classes. It’s notable because Ultimo Guerrero was leading CMLL’s most advanced class last we knew. CMLL’s classes have been suspended for most of the pandemic; I’m not sure they’ve been restarted. Maybe Ultimo Guerrero is just looking for another way to get paid at a time when there are fewer wrestling bookings (and such is a bad time to be adding more wrestlers to the profession, not that any trainer ever seems to think about that.) He could still be teaching the CMLL classes, whenever they happen again.

AAA

The local promoters of the twice rescheduled AAA TV taping in Merida held a press conference on Tuesday to announce the taping will now happen on March 13th. A press release mentions “99.5%” of the wrestlers originally scheduled to appear will be there, which only makes one wonder who’s in that other “0.5%.” A video ad for the show includes the Lucha Brothers & FTR, but those names are conspicuously missing from the press release and they seemed to be promoting the Laredo Kid/Dragon Lee/Willie Mack/? Cruiserweight title match as the main event. The full card was said to be coming “soon” on Tuesday and hasn’t appeared.

AAA also has noticeably not put out graphics for the Lucha Brothers versus Dralistico & Dragon Lee match or John Hennigan versus Hijo del Vikingo title match for Saturday’s Rey de Reyes as they have the other matches. They have posted the Hennigan challenge to Vikingo, though not the graphic.

This seems like Fenix hasn’t been cleared and AAA’s pausing on talking about him entirely until his situation settled. The most optimistic way to look at it is AAA still has hope Fenix may be cleared – and Fenix has posted photos without a sling recently – but I’d bet against him wrestling at this point. Mexican wrestling strategy is not to stay anything if there’s bad news. Going out of their way not to put out a graphic for the tag match is a pretty clear message. My guess is Hennigan & Vikingo are good to go but AAA might change around both matches if Fenix isn’t available; maybe the end is something like Dragon Lee being added to the main event and a Penta/Dralistico singles match. Rey de Reyes should be a good show regardless but you should keep possible changes in mind if you’re thinking about ordering it.

The good news hidden in that Merida press release is the show is mentioned to be streaming on AAA social networks. No details on which platform. AAA streamed all their tapings in the year prior to the pandemic on Twitch, which is preferable than to wait weeks for them to air on TV. AAA was specifically paid by Twitch for that – not just from normal Twitch viewer revenue, but a specific fee as mentioned in the FMV lawsuit. The streaming Lucha Capital shows were a similar deal with Facebook. That deal ended with the pandemic, so where (and perhaps still if) will likely depend on where AAA can get the best money. It looks like a good chance something will happen though, and maybe it’s just not going to be announced until after Veracruz.

the upcoming AAA taping schedule is now

  • 02/27 Veracruz (Rey de Reyes, on FITE)
  • 03/05 Madero
  • 03/12 Monterrey – first Showcenter show
  • 03/13 Merida – rescheduled 01/30 show
  • 03/26 Tijuana
  • 03/31 Dallas – WrestleCon

AAA’s only announced lineups for the first two shows. Past practice was to release cards about a month in advance, so more may be coming this week. Maybe once they figure out Fenix, it’ll break the dam.

AAA announced they’ll be part of the La Mole comic-con convention in late March. They’ve participated there in the past, more on the lines of autograph signings than matches.

Crazy Boy said he and AAA have only agreed to the March 5th show so he’s hoping to impress to get brought back.

Other Notes

Robles says their 02/20 show scheduled for Gimnasio Nuevo Leon will now take place in Escobedo instead, blaming difficulties in Monterrey. There’s some local drama over who is responsible for those difficulties.

RGR is streaming a press conference next Thursday night to promote their weekend of shows. There are a lot of AAA people involved.

02/26 MLW in Charlotte

That’s Octagon Jr.’s debut with the promotion. Aramis had been advertised and no longer is. I haven’t been keeping track of when he and his wife are due but maybe that’s it? The mystery man is likely Microman.

X-LAW announced a 03/19 show in Arena Lopez Mateos, then announced Austin Aries vs Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Mesias match for their heavyweight title on that show. Aries defended the ROH title on an X-LAW show long ago. He’s not been seen much in the US over the last two years. I don’t think he was canceled (though he did post an apology) as much as he’s a very particular person who manages to annoy people in ways not helpful to getting booked. Still, TJP gets booked and Aries does not, so that’s where Aries is in the US right now. Aries wrestled for NWA for a weekend last year but other wise this is a booking that only a Mexican promotion would be in a hurry to make. Aries perfectly fits with the X-LAW revival of theme of “everything we’re doing would be much more exciting 10-15 years ago.”

Lucha Memes announced a March 21st two-ring show in Ecatepec, built around bases. There was a tweet about it on Tuesday, then it got deleted, then it got reposted on Wednesday with slightly different verbiage.

Monterrey’s KAOZ says they’ll return from a long COVID hiatus on March 27th.

At a press conference for a charity show supporting children battling cancer, Vampiro revealed he too had cancer in his abdomen 15 years ago in addition to his publicized battle with Alzheimer’s. It is tough to keep track of all the dramatic events in Vampiro’s life, to the point that I think the man himself has trouble keeping everything straight, so the mention of cancer came off as a bit of news. I couldn’t remember it myself, but Vampiro had previously mentioned having stomach cancer “two years ago” in 2012. He also said he had a brain tumor at that time. In 2014 on Facebook, Vampiro phrased it as a “cancer scare.” The timeline doesn’t quite add up but that’s normal with him. Vampiro’s been doing press conferences for this charity for months, though it’s been explained as working on childhood diatabes in other appearances. The charity show is May 28th in Zapopan, tickets go on sale 0n Monday at www.lataquillamx.com and Dr. Wagner, Pagano and Latin Lover are said to be appearing.

In an interview with La Tijera Lucha Libre, Fuerza Guerrera says he is no longer allowing Fuerza Guerrera NG to use that name. This is a drama that apparently had been playing out this last year. Fuerza Guerrera NG, who use the name Imposible before 2019, filed for a trademark of the name and mask in March 2021. Fuerza Guerrera himself filed for that name in June of 2021, and – like Espectro most recently – doesn’t feel the other guy should have ownership rights. Fuerza Guerrera NG hasn’t wrestled later but has still used that name, so the original being upset with him hasn’t changed it. The original was asked about his “children” and didn’t bring this up on his own, so he’s not going in on this as hard as the recent Espectro or Misterioso situations.

Fuerza Guerrera also mentions Juventud Guerrera will be out six months with a foot injury. Juventud hasn’t been seen in the ring since getting hurt and walking out of a match near Chicago back in September but he’s scheduled for all the X-LAW shows announced so far. Maybe Fuerza was counting six months from that injury, which would mean a return in time.

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania and a new podcast episode.
