AAA held a press conference for TripleMania today. It was not streamed live by any site. I’m guessing it’ll be up later and we might have more details then. This is what we know based on a few Twitter accounts and what AAA’s released officially.
TripleMania will take place on Saturday, August 14th. It’ll be Arena Ciudad de Mexico as usual. This year will have limited capacity; it’s not clear what that limit will be. It’ll be a “return of fans”; not sure if they meant to TripleMania specifically (no fans last year) or AAA entirely.
(The unfortunate disclaimer: August 14th is dependent on the local health situation. Mexico’s opening up in the last month. Mexico also has an election in June. These two facts may be related. There’s no way of knowing for sure what Mexico will look like in August.)
SuperBoletos says it’s an 8:00 pm card. Tickets will run between 251 up to 7298 pesos; that’s the scale AAA announced for last year’s show before it was postponed. It’s the highest they’ve changed for a TripleMaia. Those who bought tickets for last year’s show and never got a refund can use them for this year. though I’d check with the box office if I had one just to see if anything changed.
The show will also be shown at Cineapolis theatres in Mexico. They were scheduled to show last year’s TripleMania as well, but it didn’t happen in December due to COVID restrictions. AAA & Cineapolis teased it’d happen this spring as a replay, but apparently have shelved it until August.
AAA announced three matches for the show.
- Faby Apache vs Deonna Purrazzo, with both the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship and the Impact Knockouts Championship to the winner
- Andrade versus Kenny Omega for the AAA Mega Championship
- Psycho Clown versus Rey Escorpion in a mask versus hair match.
The women’s match was sent up in a hurry at Rey de Reyes. Faby Apache hasn’t been pushed much by AAA in recent years, but she’s the one they go back to when it comes to working with a foreigner. The Reina de Reinas championship has gone missing for AAA for long periods before and I sort of expect it to happen again.
Psycho Clown spoke about wanting to win the Mega Championship and shut up Andrade. Besides annoying Rey Escorpion (felt he was being overlooked), this heavily teased Andrade winning and then facing Psycho in the next title match. It’s still hard to see because AEW seems reluctant to let their champion lose while still holding their belt. I guess it is possible Omega isn’t champion by August, but no certainty. AAA’s probably doing Psycho/Andrade next, it’s just going to be a question of the belt being on the line. (It’s noticeable there’s no tease of Psycho/Omega.)
Rey Escorpion and Psycho Clown have been feuding since Escorpion showed up in AAA in late 2017. It’s gone for years because it wasn’t even a real thing for most of them, just something Escorpion seemed to be doing himself in matches to try to will the big payday into happening. He pulled it off! There’s nothing AAA can do that will get people to believe Psycho Clown is losing his mask (outside of quietly circulating “WWE want to sign up Psycho so he’s cashing in first” rumors I suppose) but it doesn’t matter, the AAA fans want to see Psycho win and they’ll get that.
That’s three singles matches. I’d love to see more of them, it’s unlikely to go down that way. The TripleMania formula into a few matches to draw the house (Psycho/Escorpion + Omega/Andrade), at least one prominent women’s match (Apache/Purrazo), and whatever else they can put together to fit as many people as possible on the card. AAA will be pleased if those matches also turn out to be good but the purpose is to find spots for people. I’d like to get to see a showcase match for Vikingo and Laredo (maybe the same match!) but I’d be surprised if that happened. AAA probably won’t announce much more until after Verano de Escandalo (June?) and it’ll be just multiperson matches the rest of the way.
There was no surprise no mention of any TV outlet; not Space, not Azteca. I would be stunned if the show didn’t air via some outlet, but perhaps AAA is still weighing their options and things like PPV are still a possibility. This also just might be a detail that didn’t get reported and we’ll find out whenever the full press conference is available.
AAA’s next event is Saturday’s TV show. (Which may not be at the normal 6:30 pm show; Space seems to be picking up a boxing match that overlaps. Watch Twitter for updates.)
