12:48, after Texano snuck in a foul
6) Pagano b Chessman, Psycho Clown
10:05. Chessman fouled/unmasked Psycho Clown, Pagano “put” Chessman through a table, then threw him back in to win with a legdrop.
This show was better than expected. Not sure if the wrestled made sure to save something extra for the streamed show – which existed primarily as an advertisement for next weekend’s shows – or if they just worked very hard. Laredo Kid & Octagon is a match to go out of your way to see, (One of the Laredo Kid/Drago matches earlier that weekend was said to be just as good.) Everything else was generally fun.
I’m not really sure about the sightlines, but the crowd stayed into the show until the main event (via copious honking) so it might have come across stronger in person. It came across well on TV. The set looked massive and impressive, a major league production in an improvised area. The stream peaked around 17,000 viewers.
I don’t have results for the rest of the shows. Myzteziz missed Sunday’s shows due to an injury picked up Saturday. Not sure how serious it is beyond that. Dr. Landru mentions Keyra was off the shows for a personal reason and not a positive COVID test. The announced group of participants for these shows were different than those on the lineups after those COVID tests were completed, leaving the impression others might have tested positive.
AAA had a lot of new sponsors around the ring, including car maintenance manufacture Bardahl as the mat logo. That replaces Roshfrans, who produces products in the same industry. Roshfrans had also been sponsoring CMLL, but their logos haven’t appeared in Arena Mexico since the restart. The Roshfrans were omnipresent previously and it’s possible they may have existed wrestling sponsorship due to the pandemic; it’s hard to tell. AAA seems to have replaced them, while there are just not new sponsors in CMLL.
AAA will stream its annual mass in honor of Antonio Pena tonight at 7 pm.
Tijuana’s EMW also ran a drive-in show this weekend.
EMW (SAT) 10/03/2020 Estadio Chevron, Tijuana, Baja California [TJ Sports, Zeta Tijuana]
1) Mirage & Viva Van b Éxtassis & Juve Venegas
2) Kamikaze & Skalibur DQ Fanastik & Rayo Star
DQ when the Mexicali brothers convinced the ref the Tijuana team had him them with an illegal weapon
3) Genio del Aire & Jonathan b Black Boy & Lady Lee
Bombón Asesino attacked Lady Lee after the match.
4) Xtreme Tiger b Damián 666, Mortiz
5) Bestia 666 & Mecha Wolf DQ Daga & Nicho el Millionario
Mortiz and Jonathan ran in to attack Bestia & Mecha Wolf and Daga fouled partner. Damian tried to make the save but was attacked. Rey Horus then made the save and is apparently back in Rebelion Amarilla. Daga & Horus teased another title match.
The attendance was about 200 cars. That sounds good but I don’t have a good frame of reference in car attendance. The promoter (Mario Fuentes) said he was hoping to run again near the end of the month, either as another drive-in show or in the Auditorio is possible. Monster Clown was working as a vendor on the show.
IWRG (SUN) 10/04/2020 Arena Naucalpan [Mas Lucha, R de Rudo, The Gladiatores]
1) Mexica b Dick Angelo 3G
2) Diosa Quetzal, Jessy Ventura, Shil-Kha b Diosa Atenea, Fulgor I, Zoy Raymunda
Fulgor and Quetzal continue to feud
3) Oficial 911 & Oficial AK47 b Black Warrior & Guerrero Maya Sr. and Cerebro Negro & Relámpago
4) Trauma I & Trauma II DCOR Galeno del Mal & Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr.
5) Dr. Wagner Jr., Dragón Bane, Hijo de Canis Lupus DQ Demonio Infernal, Fresero Jr., Máscara Año 2000 Jr.
Mascara 2000 hit Wagner with a tray and fouled him, causing the DQ.
Mascara 2000 Jr. wants a retirement match with Dr. Wagner Jr. Mascara 2000 Jr. doesn’t seem long for wrestling. Dr. Wagner was honored before his match. Fulgor feuding with Diosa Quetzal is amusing.
IWRG says they’re running their Castillo del Terror show on 11/01, which is their normal “someone loses a mask” match.
I don’t have full Lucha Memes from Sunday results; it appears Mas Lucha was there filming but didn’t post results. I do know Arez won the tournament, defeating Black Taurus in the final after defeating Blazer & Sadico earlier. Latigo appeared shaken up after taking a powerbomb for Taurus in their semifinal but was saying he was fine. It is interesting that Black Taurus came to Mexico City to work Memes and not AAA’s Autoluchas. Not sure if it’s meaningful.
DTU says their next show may be a drive-in show, if the Hidalgo moved to yellow health status.
Bandido believes he’s recovered from COVID-19, though he’s not sure if he’s still positive. Over the last two weeks, he’s lost 13 pounds, had trouble sleeping, and dealt with bad headaches. Ultimo Guerrero posted video of him working out in a ring, which is odd for a person who should still be quarantining if he tested positive when CMLL stated he tested positive. The 14 day period would be up if he tested a few days earlier than CMLL made that announcement.
Mexico City luchador Bravo del Norte (Luis Herrera Perez) passed away on Sunday
Pachuca luchador Caballero de Atenea suddenly announced on Facebook that he was retiring from lucha libre immediately and selling all his masks. (QuadrilateralTV pointed this out first.) Caballero de Atenea had been part of Lucha Libre Vanguardia as part of the Odaiba Squad main rudo group on recent shows and said he was retiring for personal reasons after a ten-year career.
RIOT turned five years old on Saturday. They’d normally celebrate with a show, but that’s not possible right now. They instead made their first show free on pivotshare. I really liked the Rey Horus/Dralion main event.
Dark Angel was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest on Sunday. She’s been traveling around the US in a van and posting videos on YouTube.
Box Y Lucha 3442 has recaps of the CMLL and IWRG shows.
A promotion in Villahermosa, Tabasco is in trouble for running unauthorized shows.
NVI Noticias has a good profile of Oaxaca luchador Xicotencatl, who’s said to be the first lucha libre trainer in Oaxaca back in the early 60s. He had license #1 when the state started a commission.
Stephanie Vaquer will appear in a discussion of lucha libre in Ciudad Madero in 10/18.
