Carístico beat Sansón
(16:40, 1/2 DQ, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL)

What happened:

Sanson fouled and unmasked Caristico for the DQ.

Thoughts:

Sonic is a reason to watch the openers

The strength of current CMLL is wringing every bit of drama out of singles matches. There’s clear good and bad, especially when Caristico is involved, and their crowd gets into that aspect strongly. It also produces a slower match with less creativity, trying to keep it simple for the smallest child or the least paying attention adult to keep follow along easily. The athleticism in this match wasn’t as impressive as matches Sanson has had with Soberano, but they got the crowd to care nearly as much as while doing less. It was definitely less, and an overally long feeling second fall to do the surprise two fall ending. If they’re going to keep it simple in what they do in the matches, the matches themselves have no need to be as long as they currently are.

The micros had another match built on different match ups, which meant not much of the Microman/Chamuel one. It’s still a work in progress, with a lot of work needed. The first fall meandered so badly that Zacarias was beating up Microman on the stage while his partners were waiting to finish the fall. It got better in the second fall but never strong.

CMLL (other) tag team tournament teams announced, new DTU Arena

CMLL Informa announced the first eight teams for the Mexican National Tag Team Championship tournament. These eight teams will be in the 02/28 bracket.

  • Titan & Soberano Jr.
  • Templario & Hijo del Villano III
  • Fuego & Dulce Gardenia
  • Black Panther & Blue Panther Jr.
  • Luciferno & Ephesto
  • Misterioso & Sagrado
  • Pegasso & Stigma
  • Virus & Universo 2000 Jr.

This is the same week as the incredible pairs final, which is going to be a weird show.

Titan & Soberano are the clear favorite. Tempalrio would be up there with a stronger partner. (Hijo del Villano III’s current level is “he disappeared for a month and no one seemed to notice.”) These championships would be more useful if the Panthers had them or the fun seeming Fuego/Dulce Gardenia team did – just in the idea that it might give people who are good something to do, but there’s no guarantee of that.

That’s only half the teams. There was some talk on Informa about holding one spot open for the winning team of the incredible pairs tournament, but no decision had been made.

AAA confirmed Saturday’s AAA TV taping has moved from Guadalajara to Tonala. A person on Twitter says it’s closer to a 10 minute drive between the two venues, so this shouldn’t change all that much.

Panini has a new series of AAA stickers. These appear to be in English, which suggests these are intended to be marketed in the US. Nothing’s been said about them by AAA as of yet and Panini doesn’t appear to allow international orders.

Saturday’s The Crash opener was scheduled to be Gelus & Black Danger versus two disciples of Mesias. The disciples must be busy because The Crash says it’ll instead be Hijo del Impostor and El Dragon. Impostor is from Juarez so this Dragon is also probably the same. This is a shocking moment of a lucha libre promotion advertising a changed match.

  1. Cuatrero inverted bear hug (3:32)
  2. La Mistica (1:55)
  3. Caristico pin (11:08)

What happened:

Cuatrero tossed his mask to Caristico, but Caristico covered him without the referee noticing it and got the win.

Cavernario fouled Felino for the DQ.

Thoughts:

Caristico

The main event was worked as a pace where Caristico had enough time to yell at Edgar while standing on the top rope, and he still hit the move. This was two falls of not much and the usual crowd/referee interaction of Caristico in Arena Puebla. Cuatrero could’ve been anyone and it’s a great argument for putting anyone else in the spot to see if they might figure out how to work it. Cuatrero saw as a chance to do less of what he usually does but not more of something else. The sequence into the ref bump was rough. The Arena Puebla crowd continues to enjoy simple good defeating evil stories, so there’s no reason to change things.

Chamuel has had so many falls end in DQ or similar finishes. I may have forgotten what his actual finish was when he went up top. (It turned out to be a normal flip senton.) Microman & Chamuel worked together a lot more in this match, though there was also a Microman handspring double back elbow bit that looked awful.

Audaz/Templario had a match that was good though not as good as most of Templario’s work. It was still the best CMLL match of the week. It was not a strong week.

CMLL Promos: Rey Cometa, Volcano, Felino & Zacarais (now has firmly picked a side against Cavernario) and Atlantis Jr.

Nothing really worth seeking out on this show; Cometa/Universo was the best of a quick show. Hechicero & Stuka pushed their feud again, but CMLL didn’t do anything with it last time and it’s tough to believe it’s going anywhere.

Not really good when the guy dead center in the poster doesn’t show up with no explanation. Also not good when Oro Jr. was listed in two buildings on the same night and no one in CMLL noticed to send a sub.

AAA announced the Rey de Reyes lineup last night:

AAA TV (SAT) 03/21/2020 Poliforum Zamna, Mérida, Yucatán
Rey de Reyes, 2020
1) Drago & Drago Kid vs La Parka Negra & La Parkita Negra
2) Hijo de LA Park, La Parka Jr., Pagano vs Averno, Chessman, Súper Fly and Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana

6) Blue Demon Jr. vs AerostarMichael NakazawaMáscarita SagradaMr. IguanaNiño HamburguesaDave The ClownArezDinastíaVillano III Jr. [Rey de Reyes]
7) Monsther Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown vs La Bestia Del Ring, LA Park, Rush Toro Blanco

(This is a 6 pm start, not the 8 pm CT ones they’ve done so far.)

This follows Saturday’s show in Guadalajara and the 03/07 show in Cancun, though most of the matches that were going to get any set up have already been set up. The last TV set up the Psycho Circus/Los Ingobernables match and the trios title match had been made a taping prior. Laredo Kid gets the title match against Kenny Omega because he’s very good and no other explanation. Same thing with the Rascalz coming into face the Lucha Brothers. (That’s a rematch from the Gladiatores taping which never actually aired.)

Drago/Drago Kid vs Parka Negra/Parkita Negra is an entertaining match, though it has Drago going from feuding with Blue Demon to working an opener. Demon seems like the overwhelming favorite for the Rey de Reyes, though AAA could add more people and it’s not particuarllly clear what Demon is doing here if he’s not feuding with Drago. (On the other hand, Demon doesn’t have a great need to stick around AAA if he’s getting moved down the card; he may need to win that match to feel relevant.) Arez is still being listed, so whatever issues there were over him not working the MLW shows seems like they’ve blown over.

The Taya/Keyra title challenge seems set for another show and there are no women announce for this show outside of La Hiedra. Taurus seems to be otherwise busy. AAA’s been busy posting videos expanding on Drago/Demon, Argenis/Myzteziz and Vikingo/Suicide feuds which are also not happening quite here.

This is a very good card. The Rey de Reyes match itself seems like the weakest match on the card and even that could be good. (The TripleMania Regia version was not good, the Hereos Inmortles version was good, there’s a lot of variance in those.) It’s a bit disconnected from the regular AAA TV but less so than usual. It’s overly packed with people but that’s just what AAA is right now.

Saturday’s AAA taping is scheduled for Guadalajara. Scheduled, but the AAA curse in Guadalajara remains strong. Last July, AAA planned to run a taping at Auditorio Benito Juarez, only for it to get moved outdoors to Palcco de Zapopan at the last minute due to venue issues. This year, AAA announced is to run Domo San Rafael for the first time. Ring Tapatio, a Facebook page focusing on Guadalajara lucha libre, mentions they’ve heard the show will again be moved to a different location, Domo del Parque Solidaridad in Tonala. They note this is not 100% confirmed and AAA has not said anything, but the updated poster is compelling evidence.

This wouldn’t change anything with Twitch or the announced lineup. Tonala is about a half-hour outside of Guadalajara, so many of the same fans could come and it wouldn’t affect preparation for the show greatly.

Last Thursday’s AAA show in Arena Lopez Mateos included a tribute to La Parka.  As part of the tribute, Karis La Momia Jr. said he’ll be wrestling as La Parka Jr. That’s a big deal, and it hasn’t been acknowledged by AAA outside of that show. Both AAA & Karis had said he’d eventually take the Parka name back at the mass to honor him in January but implied it’d be quite a while before it happened, not a few weeks later. It’s also very strange this would happen with AAA’s approval at an untelevised show on a Thursday night in Arena Lopez Mateos, which makes it seem like maybe it was something just for the moment but not an official switch. (Karis/Parka wrestled in a split mask, a Parka t-shirt and his Karis pants, which also suggests this wasn’t planned much ahead of time.) Karis/Parka is not booked on any upcoming AAA TV shows; his next known booking is 02/29 in Xalapa as Karis.

03/13 AAA/MLW/EMW in Tijuana

EMW is posting these matches on their Facebook about 36 hours before MLW announces them, which is good fun. Also good fun is MLW’s press release about the trios title match, which includes calling Octagon Jr. “Golden Magic” (wanting to stay out of the trademark fight?) and using a photo of Caristico as Myzteziz instead of Angelikal as Myzteziz Junior. AAA announcing a trios title match at Rey de Reyes eight days later seems to give away the outcome of this trios title match, but there’s not much doubt in this title match anyway.

ROH announced Flamita & Bandido vs The Havana Pitbulls (Rocky Romero & Ricky Reyes) on their 03/14 PPV. The press release mentions Flamita is expected to be back from his knee injury by that match.

San Luis Potosi luchador Vaquero de Texas Jr., who passed away last month, will be remembered at an event on Friday.

(10:39 [4:56, 5:43], ½, n/r, VideosOficialesCMLL)

What happened:

Sanson fouled Caristico for the DQ, setting up a singles match next week.

Thoughts:

nope

The story of the last year or so of Audaz & Templario’s careers has been Templario’s rise – both in status and in capabilities – while Audaz has been stuck in place. This match told that same story in smaller pieces: Audaz’s big moves all got countered or stopped, and Templario relatively easily took him out. It came off relatively one-sided for these lightning matches, Audaz is going to have to get a lot better to catch up.

I’m not sure what was supposed to happen at the end of the first fall with Grako & Graham, but I’ve never seen Grako so visibly angry about something. It would help if he showed that level of emotion more often. The rest of the match didn’t have a lot going on. Oro Jr. didn’t trip this week, so that’s an improvement. Graham has the better look but Ayden looked more solid in the ring. Neither really stood out.
