La Parka (1966-2020)

La Parka, the face of the AAA for nearly two decades, passed away on Saturday. He had turned 54 last week. La Parka was Jesus Alfonso Escoboza Huerta.

La Parka suffered fatal injuries on a dive in Monterrey on October 20. His head and neck injuries were so bad that there was a legitimate belief he would not make it through the night. La Parka made it through the night, though he never appeared in public. There were conflicting reports from AAA and media sources about Parka’s injuries and surgeries. Parka reportedly moved out of the hospital to a private home owned by AAA in Monterrey about a month ago. There were no official health updates after the first couple of weeks, just brief public statements by his son (wrestling as Karis La Momia Jr.) hoping for the best for his father. AAA’s announcement mentions Parka died of lungs and kidney failure.

La Parka was one of the more prominent stars in AAA over the last couple of decades. He worked the first TripleMania – not as a wrestler, but as security. He most famously wrestled as Karis La Momia in AAA before taking over the La Parka gimmick. The original Parka, better known now as LA Park, was one many wrestler who left AAA in 1996 to form Promo Azteca. AAA founder Antonio Pena declared he owned the rights to the gimmicks of the departing wrestlers and replaced many of them. Karis, as La Parka, was the most successful of the replacements, quickly adopted by the AAA fans as the new star of the company. Pena initially presented him as “La Parka Jr.” to avoid the ire of the fans, and gradually faded out the “Jr.” (Fans also would refer to him as La Parka AAA or Parkaris to distinguish him from the more internationally known Parka.) A Mexican wrestling fan in your 20s would’ve known this La Parka as the real Parka for all they can remember and have seen him as a giant star all that time. CMLL acknowledging La Parka is surprising and a statement about how big a star La Parka was.

La Parka won Cibernetico’s mask at the 2004 TripleMania, a matchup between AAA’s biggest stars of that era. He later won Muerte Cibernetica (Mesias)’s mask. Parka was a five-time Rey de Reys Champion, the most in the history of the tournament. Those achievements don’t really sum up his value: La Parka was the perfect star for AAA’s traveling caravan. He could go town to town with an easy crowd-pleasing match, doing his signature bits to elicit cheers, and leaving everyone in good shape to do the next day again. La Parka was never a guy who did much in the ring – something that would frustrate & antagonize his contemporaries – but his matches still got over. Parka’s matches became a source of internal tension during attempts to move AAA’s style closer to the rest of the world, but he kept doing his thing, and the company stayed loyal to Parka. Almost all of the great names of his era left AAA or AAA pushed them out, but Parka remained as the company legend.

Parka had wrestled less on TV in recent years. He’d been moved into a mentor/endorsement role in 2019, used to get the fans behind faces like Hijo del Vikingo, Laredo Kid, and Golden Magic. Parka was the voice of AAA, the on-screen character credited with the idea of making Angelikal into Myzteziz Jr. and Golden Magic into Octagon Jr. AAA hoped the fans would be as kind to the new versions of the character as they had been to Parka. Some of Parka’s last TV appearances were barely appearances: in one of his final shows in Saltillo, he only appeared for a couple of minutes to distract Dave the Clown on a finish. Parka never wrestled a physically demanding or risky style; he’d be one of the least likely Mexican luchadors to suffer a death related to something happening a match. Still, he was a luchador wrestling 200 matches a year and suffered severe injuries in a car accident years ago. The dive miss went badly, but – perhaps like Perro Aguayo Jr., it was made much worse by the years of damage to that point.

This was another CMLL show with about one good match. The one good match was that semi-main, and it was well worth watching. CMLL would probably be better if they were putting Hechicero (and Templario) in some of these main events, but maybe we wouldn’t be getting these matches.

Ring of Honor announced they’ve signed Bandido to a new contract. The word going around was ROH & Bandido were talking about a two-year deal this time, though I’m not 100% certain if that’s what ended up being signed. Bandido had offers from everyone once again and considered going out of contract and just working some ROH dates in addition to indies – similar to what Jeff Cobb’s apparently doing. He did sign with ROH, but he may have gotten a bit more freedom to work some additional US dates in the bargaining. This ROH doesn’t affect his CMLL status, though I’d guess everyone’s happy with him working both promotions. I’d expect we’ll see a lot more MexaBlood to come.

ROH has two shows this weekend

01/11 6 pm CT stream start time (actual show in Atlanta starts an hour earlier)

  • Rush vs PCO (c) [ROH WORLD]
  • Dragon Lee (c) vs Andrew Everett [ROH TV]
  • Bandido, Flamita, Rey Hours vs Marty Scurll, Flip Gordon, Brody King

01/12 6 pm CT start time

  • Rush, Kenny King, Dragon Lee vs Marty Scurll, PCO, Brody King [ROH TRIOS]
  • Flip Gordon vs Flamita
  • Bandido vs Alex Zayne
  • Rey Horus vs Andrew Everett

MLW is taping today in Dallas with Aerostar challenging Hammerstone for the National Championship, Septimo Dragon vs Gino Medina and Drago & Puma King vs Hijo de LA Park & Taurus vs Injustice. It’s a rare US show to have Hijo de LA Park booked and not LA Park. This is the (re)start of AAA/MLW collaboration. AAA wrestlers are scheduled for next week’s Impact taping as well, so it might be interesting to see the different ways they’re used or if there’s some divvying up of talent.

Another slow weekend of shows. There’s scheduled to be a big show in Acapulco, though it has the lineup of a show that’d make me double-check it was still happening before making the trip. IWRG has Shun Skywalker’s debut.

Hahastary says her long-term goal is to make it to Japan, and she’d like to be known as one of the best in the indies and AAA too.

Segunda Caida’s recent reviews includes an Eddie Guerrero match from Ciudad Juarez.

Lineups

CMLL (FRI) 01/17/2020 Arena México
1) Retro & Robin vs Akuma & Espanto Jr.
2) Avispa Dorada, Marcela, Princesa Sugehit vs Amapola, Metálica, Tiffany
3) Black Panther, Blue Panther, Blue Panther Jr. vs Espíritu Negro, Pólvora, Vangellys
4) Rey Cometa vs Templario [lightning]
5) Atlantis Jr., Kráneo, Valiente vs Ephesto, Mephisto, Rey Bucanero
6) Diamante Azul, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Gran Guerrero, Shocker, Terrible

The main event continues to Mistico/Gran Guerrero. The third match seems like it’ll keep Blue Panther/Vangellys going. Both are odd matches to be setting up for the Mr. Niebla tribute show on 01/24. Mistico’s going to be booed out of the building in a big match on that show.

Cometa/Templario looks really good.

What happened:

they’re getting better

Gran Guerrero tossed his mask while taking a headscissors to draw the DQ. It wasn’t clear it was intentional until a replay and seemed to set up a singles match with Místico.

Ephesto hit the ropes and came up short on his normal tope in the fourth match. He seemed wobbly to start the second fall but was allowed to continue and did get better as the match progressed. Vangellys, already eliminated in the third fall, came back into foul Blue Panther Sr. to end that match in a DQ.

Universo’s knee may have gone but after taking the nudo egipica. He submitted before Edgar could make the full three count and was getting medical assistance as CMLL pulled away.

Thoughts:

Diamante Azul spent about a minute and a half kneeling on the stage, doing nothing but waiting for his comeback spot. It felt right for this match, which had a nice dive catch by Gran Guerrero that didn’t get paid off in any way and not a lot else. The fight felt improvised, with not a lot of thought before getting to the key spots at the end. Gran Guerrero’s mask removal was so confusing it seemed accidental – the tecnicos continuing the match more than normal contributed – but it ended up just being strange.

Rey Bucanero, Hechicero and Templario wrestled the semi-final as if they’d been a permanent team for years. It really clicked at the end of the first fall, when this rudos had more sequenced spots than most of the regular units. Hechicero & Templario have quietly been a great pair and Bucanero stepped up his game; turning Hechicero’s reverse monkey flip into a front cracker was the smartest bit anyone’s done with it. Star Jr. and Atlantis Jr. stepped up to match them. Star Jr.’s maybe doing the superman punch a bit but the comedy bit he did to set up the first one showed some great personality. Atlantis has become better the farther he’s gotten from mimicking his father’s moves. (The Atlantida will be back someday, but it’s been ages since we’ve seen it.) It’s tough to figure out where to rate this; so much more thought was put into it than most of the recent CMLL matches that it really stands out, but it might get too much credit for the context. It’s on the line; Valiente wasn’t as into the match as everyone else and Bucanero was literally hit or miss. Still, if you are looking for CMLL to watch, this is one to go out of your way to watch.

go team

The fourth match had some ups and downs. Ephesto crashing and burning on his tope derailed things pretty good. The second fall was a lot of stalling to allow him to get his wits back but the Panthers made an unlikely and quick comeback to win the fall got the fans pretty excited. It did not seem to carry over to the third fall at all, where some of the usual Panther tricks received a surprisingly small reaction. It was a long way to go to get a foul after all of that.

The Esfinge/Universo match seemed like it was peaking for a finish around the five-minute mask, which was fine. Universo instead broke up Esfinge’s sequence to keep it going for a couple of minutes. It added another dive and not a lot more. Nothing Esfinge did was memorable but the crowd did get into it. Universo still seems clumsy.

Marcela and no Dalys means a tecnica win. This lineup meant a weak match. It was the same as usual for the women, with some clunky sequences sticking out.

Mercurio has done well since returning, but he showed he can still mail it in when there’s not much hope of the match being good. There wasn’t much here, so we got one cool Shockercito multiple rotation headscissors spot and not much. Pequeno Violencia is not much help at this point and Fantasy remains just there.
