UG took 2/3 to retain. 6th defense

This reads like a nothing show; I didn’t see anyone talking about it when it was going on. Euforia/Volador is a fresh singles match – they’ve only had one 1v1 two years ago – but it is tough to be excited for much right now. The CMLL promotion-wide depression is the one that would’ve been expected more after Paco Alonso passed away.

Arena Mexico has the first Espiritu Negro vs Principe Diamante match, as a lightning match. The two have been feuding the last couple of weeks, likely headed to an apuesta match in a month or so. Both have seemed excited about getting their first real feud in CMLL. Hopefully, it’ll translate into an exciting match.

The semi-main is worth keeping an eye on the finish. The NJPW standard is wrestlers spend about two years away before being brought back. They haven’t strictly stuck to it and there’s no telling how Kawato San’s time off plays into his time away. This is still about the time CMLL would be doing an apuesta match with Kawato if they had to finish him up. He had some interactions with Dulce Gardenia, who seems the most likely person to get a hair match win soon. That bit last week may have been nothing or it may just be nothing for now; today’s show should make it clearer if anything is happening right now.

The rest of the card is the usual filler. Atlantis Jr. gets a main event, teaming with Carisitco and Mistico against Euforia, Mephisto and Rey Bucanero. Always possible CMLL could set up a tag title feud there, though none of the rudos are usual partners. Black Panther is back on the tecnico side teaming with Drone & Guerrero Maya versus Dark Magic, Okumura and Tiger. The lightning match seems like a one night blip, but this would be a match where more could be hinted. Halcon Suriano & Super Astro Jr. (who are great) team with Sangre Imperial (who is not great) against Akuma, Distrubio and Hijo del Signo. A minis match opens the show; Pequeno Universo 2000 reaches 20 matches this year, eclipsing his total from last year. It sure feels like a year of more Pequeno Universo 2000 matches. The show streams at 7:30 pm.

Guadalajara has the Chavez Brothers against Volador Jr. vs Cavernario, Negro Casas and maybe Shocker. Shocker was advertised on Friday in Guadalajara, was actually in his Mexico City taco truck. Maybe he hasn’t been cleared. He doesn’t visuall look like a guy who should be cleared but I’m not a doctor.

CMLL announced Guadalajara’s Fugaz, Johnny Dinamo, Fantastico, Crixus, Mr. Samurai, Divino, and Cosmos will participate in tomorrow’s bodybuilding contest. There are usual luchadors in from Guadalajara and even Puebla in the bodybuilding contest. The change here is CMLL typically doesn’t announce participants in advance; there’s typically no knowing who’s there until they appear in the different competition groups.

That bodybuidling contest is tomorrow at noon. It typically streams on CMLL’s YouTube, though it is often not announced ahead of time. Entry is free if you’re in the area and want to see this. The never confirmed but strongly believed talk was this was a concept that appealed to Paco Alonso. It would be in bad taste to cut it the year he passes away, though the future of it is less clear. It’s not a costly event to run – nutritional supplement sponsors seem to be donating the prizes and judging the contest – it just always feels a strange adjunct to what CMLL does. Being in an aesthically impressive condition is part of professional wrestling everywhere, but top bodybuilding shape isn’t always top wrestling shape. Bodybuilding can look visually off for a luchador and the loss of flexibility can hamper performance.

The posing is typically proceeded by a tumbling/wrestling exhibition by one of the younger classes of luchadors. It’ll be a couple of dozen people, a few in masks, a couple who are known indie wrestlers, and perhaps one will be actually booked regularly in CMLL cards in the next few years. The bodybuilding competition seemed to begin as beginner/intermediate/advanced and has greatly expanded categories as time has gone by. The 2018 categories were Micros, Female Students, Male Students, Principiantes (Beginners), Intermediate, Women, and Advanced. Astral won the overall contest the last two years but has since left CMLL. Titan seems like a favorite here. Dalys has won the women’s division for four straight years and five of the last six. There hasn’t been any challenger for her since Dark Angel left and it would be a surprise if there was a challenge. There is another person of note; Avispa Dorada hasn’t been seen in a CMLL ring since August but appears to be participating in this bodybuilding contest. Dalys is the overall favorite.

CMLL Informa announced guests are Templario, Audaz, Negro Casas, Dulce Gardenia, Canek, and the bodybuilding winners. The four rudos in Sunday’s CMLL Welterweight cibernetico are supposed to be on the show, though only Templario would fit from that list.

+LuchaTV has a new edition of their podcast. Bernado Guzman mentions AAA’s TripleMania Regia will air on Multimedios in two weeks. Konnan did say AAA was working on a way of making it available, but AAA’s made no indication of that happening. There will probably be people streaming it from their phone on Facebook and Estrellas del Ring does usually posts matches from Monterrey quickly, so there will be a wave of people watching it unofficially, and then again officially a while later. It’s not ideal but we’re still dealing with groups in Mexico who decide not to release their shows so getting to see a televised version at all shouldn’t be taken for granted.

The show also mentioned Super Crazy is off Saturday’s AAA show (booked in Canada) but Myzteziz will wrestle in his return from Exatlon. Myzteziz is also expected on TripleMania Regia, probably in the Copa TripleMania Regia.

The Jack Evans/Kenny Omega AAA Mega Championship match is airing today on AEW Dark. The show is supposed to go up on YouTube at 6 pm CT, though it has infamously not started on time the last couple of weeks. You can say a lot of things about AAA’s punctuality but they do know how to upload files, hit the “Premiere” selection and put in a starting time. This week’s Being the Elite again teased the idea of Omega doing something with the AAA title, possibly to get a rematch with Jon Moxley.

AAA denied to El Universal that La Parka is back in intensive care, saying he remains stable. I’m not quite sure what to believe here; the conflicting statements between Karisa La Momia and Dorian Roldan a few week weeks ago makes it hard to completely trust AAA in this situation, even any other article quotes a never specified “friend of the family.” The next step in Parka’s recovery is getting him moved to a Mexico City hospital and there’s no indication when that is happening.

I noted here how Angelico’s last AAA match was not up on YouTube any more; the episode file is listed as private. Might just be a music rights issue. Today, AAA spontaneously decided to put up the Angelico/Lider match on its own. Hope the #1 contenders match is next.

The schedule for the news updates will be more erratic for the next few days. Nothing Wednesday won’t be until after the bodybuilding contest. Not sure if/when Thursday. Probably something Friday but time may be weird.

“A 3 CAIDAS”, the lucha libre movie starring Tinieblas and Cibernetico, premieres on 11/26 in Mexico City’s Cinepolis Toreo.

RIOT says there will be two people debuting on their surprise show on 02/01, including an international wrestler.

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania.
