17:42. Star Jr. & Valiente took 1/3, the last with Star Jr. beating Mistico to win the Gran Alternativa.

Valiente & Star Jr. thank CMLL for their win and Rey Cometa talks about his lightning match win.

Media interviews: Rey Cometa (Box Y Lucha), Atlantis Jr/Audaz/Soberano (Box Y Lucha), NGD (Box Y Lucha), Star Jr. (Box Y Lucha)

The main event is a match worth going out of your way to see, a dramatic final where the winner came away looking strong. I don’t know that Star Jr. is destined to be a top guy, but he’s been better than the position he’s been at for a while and belongs in the mix with the Atlantis Jr/Audaz level guys already. He’s certainly better than Flyer’s shown this year and might show more with better opponents.

CMLL’s press conference for Dia de Muertos had a few announcements

  • the Rey del Inframundo cibernetico will take place on 10/29 (Tuesday)
    • it will be an eight-man match, no names were announced
  • Sanson will defend his title against the winner on 11/01 (Friday)
  • Microman and Chamuel will have a singles match on 11/03 (Sunday)

Only the Friday & Sunday are Dia de Muertos themed shows.

Ultimo Guerrero is announced on for the ROH 11/03 Pittsburgh show. (He’ll likely also be on the 11/02 show in Columbus.) The 11/03 show is a “fan vote for the matches” deal. Dragon Lee will face one of Eli Isom, Jeff Cobb, PJ Black, and Kenny King. Ultimo Guerrero will face the other three in a four-way match. Those shows appear to be the first time Dragon Lee, Rush and Ultimo Guerrero will be in the same place since the first two were fired from CMLL.

AAA’s Heroes Inmortales is tonight in Orizaba. It’s listed as an 8 pm CT start time. More start times here and a longer preview over at Voices of Wrestling. Like most AAA major shows of late, it’s a card crammed with people just to get people booked, lacks follow up feuds teased on regular TV shows, and still might be pretty good because there’s a lot of good wrestlers involved. Kenny Omega vs Fenix is going to get the most attention from non-regular AAA watchers. Dinasita/Octagon/Puma vs Abismo/Arez/Super Fly may steal the show. The main event cage match looks like an absolute mess but that seems what AAA is typically going for in these. We are looking for finding out who exactly is Octagoncito this time and if AAA signals any plans for December’s Guerra de Titanes. There didn’t seem to be any plans for this show so it would be unexpected to have future ones.

I don’t think Kenny Omega is winning the AAA Mega Championship tonight. I also think it would be a perfectly fine thing if he did. Omega disappearing with the title for a long time isn’t going to harm AAA any more than Fenix doing the same (which appeared to be minimal.) Omega becoming champion would get AAA the much desired outside of Mexico attention. I just believe Omega’s working with AAA past this match (and it’s not all that clear if AEW is after this.)

I do think Daga’s winning the AAA Latin American championship from Drago, or this is Daga’s last match in AAA for the time being. Maravilla & Villano figure to stay mixed tag champs for a while longer.

La Parka’s column mentions he’ll have a surprise at the show. Karis La Momia Jr. making his on-screen debut in Copa Antonio Pena seems possible. Nicho Psicosis is on upcoming TV shows and could also pop up here; this Twitter user thinks so. They have some spots open with Laredo Kid & Myzteziz announced and still on Exatlon, though those may be regular AAA roster memebers.

The potential surprise worth the most attention is Rush. Konnan posted a photo of himself, Dorian Roldan and Rush yesterday. It’s not exactly clear if that picture was actually taken yesterday. Rush has no known show today, though I’m still skeptical he’ll be in Orizaba. AAA tends to prefer to keep their surprises as actual surprises; if Konnan believed Rush was showing up today, he wouldn’t be giving it away on Twitter. (He’d be giving it away to Dave Meltzer.) I do believe Rush showing up in AAA is inevitable – AAA wants it so bad that they’ll deal with whatever political difficulties ensure – and I can’t totally rule it out happening tonight. I think it’s more likely they’ll just start to tease his arrival.

Lucha Central has a preview of the show.

Fenix and Pentagon apparently didn’t show up for the PCW Ultra show last night; they’re not listed in the results despite being advertised for the show. Neither the promotion nor the luchadors have said anything about why they weren’t there. This is following Fenix missing a high profile AIW show a few months back. It’s not happening all the time, but happening at all is a problem. The Lucha Brothers are great, apparently great enough to get a deal to keep working indies while on AEW TV, but no one’s so great to just skip shows they’ve been advertised for.

AAA’s shows in Colombia were postponed from October to November. Now, the 11/16 date in Soacha has been postponed until 2020. Ticket holders can get refunds. The 11/17 show in Tunja remains on, though that’s the venue about 700 total tickets listed, so it doesn’t seem like the most cost-effective idea to run that show as a standalone event.

A show in Gomez Palacio last night headlined by Juventud Guerrera, Canek and Falcon Jr. against Puma King, Mascara Sagrada Jr., and Zumbi drew 3,500 people.

Lineups

CMLL (FRI) 10/25/2019 Arena México
1) Magia Blanca & Príncipe Diamante vs El Coyote & Grako
2) Black Panther, Blue Panther Jr., Súper Astro Jr. vs Cancerbero, Raziel, Virus
3) Atlantis Jr. vs Templario [lightning]
4) Hechicero, Rey Bucanero, Terrible vs Dulce Gardenia, Flyer, Stuka Jr.
5) Soberano Jr., Star Jr., Valiente vs Cavernario, Gilbert el Boricua, Último Guerrero
6) Carístico, Diamante Azul, Místico vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Mr. Niebla

Star Jr. doesn’t exactly get the main event after all. He does get some good opponents and reunited with old tag team partner Soberano. They were a 2014 team leading into a horrendous double mask match with Ramstein & Cholo on Three Kings Day 2015. Soberano has moved up the cards quicker. Star Jr. winning the Gran Alternativa might mean more of them together.

Speaking of teams: it’s unusual to see Ultimo Guerrero a spot lower than his Guerrero teammates. I’d assume UG is in semi-main just to showcase the youngsters. I wonder if perhaps Euforia & Gran Guerrero are where they’re at to set up a new tag title program. Caristico & Mistico as a team might be something that’d energize an unenthusiastic CMLL base and Gran Guerrero & Euforia would be good opponents.

Atlantis has a chance at his best match yet with Templario as an opponent. Hechicero and Stuka get matched up once again, though no sign of that going anywhere. The Panthers remain stuck in the same position. I’ve got a theory CMLL just won’t let the sons surpass their star fathers as long as the father is around, either by rule or by philosophy. Since Blue Sr. is getting moved down the cards, the kids can’t move up. It holds true for Tiger too, who can’t seem to surpass his father no matter how good he is in his own matches. The second match we’re left with should be really good – hooray for Super Astro being ahead of Magia Blanca – but there’s underutilized talent all over it.

What happened:

Star Jr. & Valiente won the 2019 Gran Alternativa. The final fall came down to Star Jr. & Místico, with Star Jr. rolling thru a La Mistica into a cradle for the win. The announcers repeatedly stated Star Jr. would get to be in the main event the following week.

Thoughts:

Angelito

Star Jr. came thru big in the main event. He is a deserving winner of the Gran Alternativa, and of moving out of the second match pool of wrestlers he’s been stuck in for the last several years. Fugaz is good, both rookies had solid performances, but everything he did came off a lot like what plenty of other guys do on the roster. (Fugaz was almost a perfect fit for Místico because they do several of the same spots.) Star Jr. brought out more new ideas for the big show, stuff as complex as a new tornillo dive and a simple as a well-timed punch. He came off a better flying prospect than Flyer did last year (and definitely better than Flyer now) and giving him the big win over Místico in the end really cemented this as a big win.

This one of those shows where the stream just wouldn’t play correctly for me. Battling takes a lot of focus away from actually watching the show. My impression was the show was largely just ok, though my impressions may be more off than usual. Both the fourth and fifth matches were familiar patterned matches, missing some life or reason for them to standoff. The NGD match felt like it went much longer, though maybe it’s just the rudo routines that happen to last longer. The tecnico opposition was good and it’s great news that Atlantis Jr. can already fit in on a team like that, but they didn’t really graduate to doing anything we don’t normally see of them. NGD took a lot of the match, which continues to help them look dominate but doesn’t do much for the tecnicos. The semi-main moved a little better and had a minor Caristico/UG issue to give the match something to build around, though it also felt overly familiar.

a Stigma tight takedown

Cometa/Stigma had the theoretical advantage of feeling unusual for being a new matchup. They tended to fall back into the usual tropes, including this week’s stage dive with no real meaning. My heart sank when Stigma got Stigmatic and I was relieved when the match continued after a kickout. It probably shouldn’t be as big a deal; Cometa’s a much less error-prone luchador than Stigma, though also less likely to break from his usual routes.

I don’t know why there was an excessive violence disqualification in the second match. I don’t know why Pegasso thought a cameraman was a rudo to leap onto from the apron. It was all strange. It’s also strange that the Panthers seemingly debuted a tag team move here; for two guys who constantly team, they don’t really have many spots as a duo. It is a little progress.

Angelito would be interesting in a division where other people were trying. That is not the CMLL mini division. Pierrothito seemed to be wrestling thru an injury, not that it made a lot of difference.
