last CMLL Friday night before Anniversario (which isn’t airing live), PWG, Cuervo, AAA PPV #, Nacion lives

tonight

One last Friday night for CMLL until Aniversario. CMLL has a couple of matches moving towards next week and maybe a good lightning match.

Six of the seven men in the cage match are in the semi-main. Big Daddy returns to team with Ultimo Guerrero & Gilbert el Boricua, taking on Ciber, Volador and Cavernario. That’s a match built to fall apart, not to be good in itself. The one man left, Negro Casas, is in a seemingly irrelevant main event. He teams with Euforia & Gran Guerrero against Caristico, Mistico and Valiente. The tecnicos will challenge for the national trios title next week.

Soberano and Templario have had great matches in the US by unloading most of their arsenals against each other. It’s unclear if they’ll get the time to do so in a lightning match. They should have enough for highlights even in an under ten-minute match. Dulce Gardenia, Flyer and Atlantis Jr. take on Hechicero, Hijo del Villano III and Felino. That’s a match that would normally include Atlantis but it seems like CMLL realizes how hurt he is right now. Not that it’ll stop them from booking Atlantis, but they just won’t do it on a Friday because someone might notice.

The micros meet once again before the Chamuel/Microman mask match. The recent matches have ended with Chamuel pulling Microman’s mask and either getting DQed or the cradle win. Mije is listed for what would be his first Arena Mexico match since April, though he’s been listed and replaced recently. Super Astro Jr. & Sonic start the show against Espiritu Negro & Grako.

CMLL airs on Marca’s YouTube at 8:30 CT. I may try to stream this from the line but no promises it’ll work or stay up.

Lucha Central has a preview of the show.

The CMLL Aniversario show will not air live as anticipated. The Gran Prix foretold the plans for the Aniversario show in many ways. CMLL will announce their plans at a later date. I assume this will be the same early morning VOD release as the Gran Prix. If I was in charge of CMLL and the Televisa TV deal was important to me, I’d wait until the matches aired on that show Saturday afternoon before putting it up on YouTube. That doesn’t really help me as a CMLL fan not living in Mexico though.

On Informa, Dragon Rojo said he expects to be back in two months after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL back in January. Princesa Sugehit revealed she had been diagnosed with a cerebral concussion back in June and it’d taken three months for her to be cleared to return to the ring. Caristico also was surprisingly honest about the lack of excitement for the Aniversario and the post-match celebrations being a self-aware bit.

An addition to the Mascara 2000 story: a longer version of his quotes about moving from wrestling to focusing on singing mentions the limited wrestling dates he plans on taking will be as an independent, for big shows only. That doesn’t rule out CMLL but it reads like another person who has decided to wrestle outside of Arena Mexico going forward.

Impact tonight has The Rascalz vs Australian Suicide, Arez, and Toxin. I think they may be finishing up the Mexico City tapings tonight.

I’m in Los Angeles for PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles. The first night was pretty good. Fenix & Penta versus Flamita & Bandido was the best match of the night. There was a noticeable difference between it and the Dragon Lee/Rey Horus match. I thought Lee/Horus was still good, but you were getting mostly the same stuff you’ve seen from Dragon Lee, while the guys in the tag match were pushing themselves farther in creativity to try something more. Those attempts don’t always work – I thought it was too much of a problem in the GCW match, which had amazing spots and really obvious flaws like an IWRG undercard match – but just doing what you’re used to doing isn’t enough in on a PWG show. Black Taurus/Darby Allin felt like the best match in terms of setting an in-match dynamic. It was so great that it’s too bad Darby is going to AEW and they can’t just keep going around doing rematches; they were underwhelming in NY but came off as perfect opposites in this one.

Tonight’s show includes Bandido vs Puma King, Penta vs Tony Deppen, and Aramis vs Rey Fenix. Aramis has picked up a bit off attention going into this tournament. This is this first match in a promotion like PWG, this is his first time traveling outside of Mexico entirely, so I’m sure there’s some nerves. Aramis is good enough to have a great match with Fenix, and I hope it comes together.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported the AAA show is believed to have done around sixty (60) buys on conventional PPV. This would not include any purchases on FITE. The show wasn’t expected to do well on PPV – AAA shows are generally free, a WWE show was the same night, and what promotion AAA did was generally about selling tickets – but 60 is still a stunningly low number. It doesn’t appear to have affected future plans at the moment; the AAA in LA show is at listed on FITE for $30 again. I do not know if it’ll be on conventional PPV. I don’t think there’s a reason to bother – the first show does have good word of mouth, but also people realizing it was going to be given away for free a few days later – so I guess it says how cheap it is to do, or how necessary someone feels the status of being on PPV is part of the package.

The WON also mentions AAA expects to have the US visas in this week. It’s not attributed to Konnan, but Konnan says word for word the same thing on his podcast, specifying Jorge Flores told Konnan it was happening this past Tuesday. Hopefully, they’re in, but all I thought about when I heard that story is all the times Lucha Underground thought they were getting visas in not – just the fourth season, but back as far as the very first episode – and all the times they didn’t all come in. AAA hasn’t announced a match for Los Angeles yet. I think they know the matches they want to run, and that they haven’t probably meant Tuesday was not the day those visas came in.

Puerto Rico’s Cuervo will return to the ring on 11/11 for World Warriors Wrestling. That’ll be near one year to the day from when he hit in the head with a thrown brick by Angel o Demonio, causing a severe brain injury.

Cain Velasquez says he’s gotten offers from other promotions but he would also like to continue wrestling with AAA thru his career. Velasquez is saying all the right things about working with AAA and seems to be in this more for enjoyment than money, but I still believe he won’t end up working a lot more AAA once the LA show is over.

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report.

ROH announced Rush & Dragon Lee vs PCO & Brody King on 09/28 in Las Vegas and Bandido vs Mike Bailey on 10/27 in Bolton. They’ve also released a preview for a Rush action figure.

Puma King has a new video.

A history of San Luis Potosi lucha libre exhibit is open in Soledad de Graciano Sanchez.

Lineups

CMLL (TUE) 09/24/2019 Arena México
1) Retro & Sangre Imperial vs Cholo & Yago
2) La Jarochita, Maligna, Princesa Sugehit vs La Seductora, Metálica, Reyna Isis
3) Magia Blanca, Pegasso, Star Jr. vs Cancerbero, Raziel, Universo 2000 Jr.
4) Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Fuego [lightning]
5) Kráneo, Stuka Jr., Volcano vs Ephesto, Luciferno, Templario
6) Atlantis, Carístico, Soberano Jr. vs Felino, Forastero, Mr. Niebla
Caristico replaced Dragon Lee, Felino replaced La Bestia del Ring

Going from booking the Munoz family against each other, then not booking them at all is odd.

CMLL (TUE) 09/24/2019 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Cosmos, El Alteño, El Divino vs Demonio Maya, Demonio Rojo, Guerrero de la Muerte
2) Átomo, Gallito, Microman vs Chamuel, Guapito, Perico Zakarías
3) Esfinge, Flyer, Star Black vs Difunto, Okumura, Vangellys
4) Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Titán vs Felino, Rey Bucanero, Terrible
5) Místico, Valiente, Volador Jr. vs Cavernario, Cuatrero, Sansón

The main event is almost a preview of the Aniversairo title match, which is probably an accident.

NLL (TUE) 09/24/2019 Gimnasio Municipal Benito Juárez, Cuautitlán, Estado de México
1) Mr. Leo vs Fly Warrior
2) Diosa Quetzal & Lolita Ángel vs Crazy Star & Princesa Azul
3) Antheus & Galeno Del Mal vs Alas de Oro & Alas De Plata
4) Brazo De Oro Jr. vs Súper NovaCentvriónHeddi Karaoui
5) Aníbal Jr., Cien Caras Jr., Hijo de Máscara Año 2000 vs Hijo de LA Park, LA Park Jr., Sangre Azteca
6) Hijo De Dos Caras & La Máscara vs El Mesías & Jack Evans

A Tuesday show with about five days of notice and no Alberto or LA Park wrestling doesn’t seem like a great idea but I guess it’s better than not existing at all. This week’s TV show looks to be Alberto talking about future plans and promoting this show. Note all the fly-ins are no longer present.

The Crash (SAT) 10/05/2019 Auditorio de Tijuana, Tijuana, Baja California
1) Ovett Jr. & Torito Negro vs Próximo & Terror Azteca
2) Ángel de Oro & Niebla Roja vs Marshall Von Erich & Ross Von Erich and MJF & Richard Holliday
3) Arandú, Star Boy, Zarco vs Animal, Demencia, Silver Star
4) Damián 666 & Jimmy Havoc vs Mance Warner & Savio Vega
5) Oráculo vs Minoru Tanaka
6) Bárbaro Cavernario, Dragón Lee (CMLL), Soberano Jr. vs Brian Pillman Jr., Davey Boy Smith Jr., Teddy Hart
7) Rey Horus © vs Hammerstone [The Crash HEAVY]
8) Bestia 666, LA Park, Mecha Wolf vs Fatu, Josef Samael, Simon Gotch

I haven’t had a good grasp on how this is going to work since this was announced. All I’m sure of now is MLW wants people to know the CMLL matches won’t air. I’m not sure how the Tijuana crowd is going to react to a lot of people they don’t know, or if the show will be long or have short matches to fit eight in (plus whatever non-wrestling segments).

IWRG (WED) 11/20/2019 Arena Naucalpan
1) Ángel Estrella Jr., Arquero, Dragón de Fuego vs Canival, Carnicero, Neza Kid
2) Atomic Star, Brazo De Oro Jr., Manchas vs Ángel Tormenta, Death Metal, Zika
3) Auzter, Jessy Ventura, Puma de Oro vs Ra-Zhata, Shil-Kha, Toshiharu
4) Dinamic Black, Dragón Bane, Hijo de Canis Lupus vs Fly Warrior, Fresero Jr., Toxin
5) Hijo De Dos Caras, Trauma I, Trauma II vs Demonio Infernal, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Pirata Morgan

This is a benefit show for the Red Cross that’s announced in full two months ahead of time for some reason?

AAA Invading NY: 2019-09-15

Mascarita Dorada

Recapped: 09/15/2019

Matches:

Chris Dickinson & Máscarita Sagrada beat Dave The Clown & Demus
(8:35, Mascarita Sagrada quadruple headscissors into a cradle Demus)

Josh Alexander, Michael Elgin, Sami Callihan beat Drago, Faby Apache, Murder Clown
(13:54, Michael Elgin foul → powerbomb Murder Clown, ok)

Daga beat Puma King, Flamita, Aerostar in a Number One Contenders Match for the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship
(10:23, Daga double underhook headcrusher Puma King, great)

Taya beat Tessa Blanchard © to win the AAA REINA DE REINAS championship
(10:10, double underhook facecrusher, good)

Fénix & Pentagón Jr. beat Ortiz (LAX) & Santana (LAX) for the AAA World Tag Team Championship
(14:04, package piledriver/double sotmp, great)

Brian Cage, Cain Velasquez, Psycho Clown beat Rey Escorpión, Taurus, Texano Jr.
(12:58, Cain Velasquez Ace Crusher, good)

Dr. Wagner Jr. beat Blue Demon Jr.
(10:29, Wagner rolled thru plancha, ok)

What happened:

gonna pretend Taurus won here

Wagner pinned Demon clean, though it was a bit of a fast count. Demon argued the count and attacked referee Johnny Bravo (who handled all the matches.) The Impact wrestlers, including Daga, came out to attack Wagner. The AAA wrestlers, including Cage, made the save and celebrated to end the show.

Taya regained the Reina de Reinas championship. Tessa showed respect to Taya after the match, then attacked her with the belt.

Elgin used a foul and a powerbomb to beat Murder Clown (which just seemed to set up the bit for post-main event.)

Mascarita Dorada was billed as Mascarita Sagrada, though he was wearing his normal Dorada outfit.

Thoughts:

LAX

This was a good show, with plenty of enjoyable matches. It also didn’t really give me many ideas of things to talk about. It felt like everyone was working at a big show level, at least as long as the matches went. It also felt slightly out of the canon, or at least slightly different from normal AAA. No weapons, no blood, no heel ref, only one foul, only one tecnico getting beat up after getting a win. It was cleaner than usual, an AAA show built not to really offend people (with the possible exception of the “puto” chant); they put on a family show expecting a lot of families.

Demon/Wagner from TripleMania got generally high marks, but there were definitely those in Mexico disappointed at it being a spectacle than a serious technical match. They had that technical match on this show. I’m glad they did what they did at TripleMania instead. Wagner/Demon never really got into high gear and ended so abruptly that it seemed like another bad referee count in lucha libre. Everyone progressed normally from that moment, meaning that was just the end. They could’ve gone for a little longer (and seemed to have the PPV time to do so), but Demon’s not one for finding that higher gear. What happened wasn’t much but perhaps it was good to leave people wanting more.

the timing could be better but idea is good

Cain Velasquez keeps giving people more. It seemed earlier on that his second appearance wasn’t going to be as interesting as his first. It turned out they just had more confidence in what Velasquez could do, and saved all of his big stuff for the finishing run. The handspring cutter was a little slow but still impressive. Taurus flipping him around was even more impressive. Everyone else played their role fine; it would’ve been nice to see a little more out of the rudos when they were in control, but this was mostly about giving the tecnicos a lot and so they did.

The middle matches all feel like they belong in the same box and I don’t have much interesting to say about them. (Do I ever have anything interesting to say? Feels like I could post the grades and move on.) Everyone worked hard, the matches had exciting moments, there’s not a lot distinguishing one from another. The LAX/Lucha Brothers felt at the level of the best version of that match and the finish was a superb visual. The fourway was a match I would’ve been excited for had I know it was happening, and they delivered on the promise of that match. (Though, if Puma King cut his superkicks in half, they’d mean twice as much. It was a problem by the end.) Taya & Tessa felt slightly less than the other two, seemingly it ended a little too soon, but there were moments of intensity found there and not as much in the other matches.

I liked the Impact/AAA match the least. There again was no problem with effort, it was just the wrong match for the show. Micahel Elgin, in particular, has only one way he knows how to work now – he’s more Mr. GMSI than Cage at this point. An early match on a lucha libre show feels like it should be a showcase for the lucha libre people and this really wasn’t that. The opener was off-putting in how few actual AAA people were opening the big AAA show, but there’s no real problem in booking Mascarita Dorada & Demus on any show you can. Dave the Clown vs Chris Dickinson could’ve been a disaster and was not, so that was pleasant.

great match roundup, week of 2019-09-08

recaps

AAA had a lot fewer matches than CMLL but a lot more fun matches. None of them completely came together for me but there are no lazy AAA matches. There are plenty of those in CMLL where the effort could be questioned. The Costa Ricans aren’t as talented as others but they did want to do something.

Cavernario, Felino, Mr. Niebla beat Carístico, Valiente, Volador Jr.
(8:28 [0:58, 7:30], 1/2 DQ, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL)

What happened:

Cavernario grabbed Volador’s leg to fake a foul, ending the main event in two falls. This set up a singles match next week.

Thoughts:

nope

The main event seemed a bit better than usual. The rudos were aggressive in the opening quick fall, the tecnicos showed more speed than usual. This wasn’t the Arena Puebla walked thru nothing two fall match, this was more trying to make something out of limited time. It isn’t worthwhile on its own, but it was good enough to close the show and set up next week fine.

The semifinal seemed like the happy Tuesday match, except the tecnicos just didn’t go for a pin when they had a sure win, stood around for a bit, one person did a dive, and the two other people got beat easily. Not so satisfying. Flyer looks better working with Hechicero than with anyone else, the truest sign of Hechicero’s evil powers.

The lightning match progressed at a dawdling pace, going eight minutes more because Polvora was taking his time between moves rather than having a lot to do. They forced in a stage dive, a spot that’s becoming meaningless because it’s forced into matches like this for lack of better ideas. It was a solid though not interesting match.

The Arena Mexico version of the Costa Rica tag didn’t have the energy of the similar Arena Puebla one. I haven’t taken a long look at the Costa Rica Wrestling Embassy results in a while, but I suspect the rudo team doesn’t get a lot of chances to work as rudos, definitely not CMLL style, and that may be an obstacle to making this interesting. This was also a lesser group of tecnicos than Monday to be fair. More than moves and even rhythm, they’re missing a bit of personality. I know these guys by their names and their masks but not much else.

Nitro’s flipping DDT was so horrible that he needs to stick to the bad piledriver. That’s all my thoughts about the match.

(5:09 [2:58, 2:11] , 1/2 DQ, below average,
VideosOficialesCMLL)

What happened:

Terrible fouled Negro Casas for no real reason in the main event.

Thoughts:

Templario has to armdrag himself

The main event was a nothing five-minute match where Mr. Niebla taking Valiente’s monkey flip was one of the few bumps. The crowd generally had a “that’s all?” feeling after the second fall, and rightfully so. There are matches which are much more of a disaster from a technical standpoint. This one felt like one from a value aspect.

Atlantis is a less mobile version of Octagon now. I may have to cut out writing about Atlantis matches entirely because the chances of them being any good with him being involved are low, and there’s nothing more to say about a cleared hobbled luchador who keeps having matches. Hechicero tried to do some small interesting stuff here in a wasted effort.

Villano III and Universo just standing in the ring and watching Kraneo run rump first into Perverso seems a bit mean for a teammate. The tercera gave you the usual slight glimmer that Black Panther might have something more to offer and not a lot more. Of the four spinning backbrackers Blue Panther Jr. did, only one time did his knee meet his opponents back.

The Costa Rica/Mexico match got a good reaction. The novelty of Mexico vs another country is still there, provided it doesn’t go too long. The Costa Ricans couldn’t go at the full speed of the Mexico tecnicos, which stood out a bit in the third fall (especially with Drone.) They were in the right places when they needed to be, they didn’t do much interesting on their own but then they didn’t limit Fuego and crew. It was very much the difference between wrestling all the time and once a month.

What happened:

a good AAA camera switch!

Demon had the match won via foul but Wagner came out and attacked his hand with a hammer, taking him out of action.

Texano pinned Murder Clown after a distraction by La Hiedra and a foul.

Hijo del Vikingo appeared to apologize for being unable to wrestle due to injury. Averno attacked him. Myzteziz & Parka tried to make the save but were attacked by Argenis. Argenis has a beef over Myzteziz using a Mistico family mask. Argenis attacked Myteziz again after his match, causing Myzteizz to bleed from the head after a chair shot.

Abismo Negro Jr., Octagon Jr. (third version) and Bengala (third version) all made their debuts under those names on the show.

Thoughts:

The main event brawl didn’t come off as well as some others, missing some wildness that was found in other matches. There were a few headscissors that looked pretty awful once they got back in the ring, but including the women didn’t really change this from the usual AAA main event formula. Wagner being advertised this show and only appearing to hammer Demon’s hand seemed to be a let down. Maybe not for the crowd, who seemed to enjoy it.

this appeared to totally suck

The rudos sell a lot for Murder Clown and Murder Clown doesn’t sell a lot of for them, which is making Murder Clown into a big star. He’s not really given anything to do and I’m not sure what they should be doing with him, but he shined brighter than both his partners before taking the loss. Aerostar seemed to get hurt but still was going a lot of his usual stuff. The crowd liked Hamburguesa against these rudos but maybe not with the urgency of before TripleMania. Like the rest of the undercard, this was enjoyable without getting too serious.

They were going for a great match in the three-way tag and it just didn’t work. There was some good creative and an attempt to bring back a spot from the GCW/BLP spot last week, but they just didn’t work out. It didn’t seem like the match was clicking with the fans, in part due the usual unfamiliarity with the foreigners (and AAA doing nothing to introduce them, as they did with all the new people on this show.) It’s possible they may have burned out a crowd that just wanted to see Psycho Clown by this point. Everyone worked hard and there were highlights, it just didn’t work out like I think they were hoping. The cameras missing both the three count and the dive before it didn’t help.

Psycho drag

The tercera got more time than usual but it didn’t really wasn’t quite as exciting as the other ones. I think there were still some good moments but it didn’t come together any big, with the crowd getting into Big Mami’s spots but not a lot else. Octagon & Abismo worked together well but I’m unconvinced Abismo can pull off the character and nothing that happened here changed my mind. Octagon basically wrestled the same as Golden Magic, which isn’t idea for a martial arts character but at least is enough to get a reaction. Abismo Negor needed a moment of his own and since Eterno doesn’t have many, it probably needed to be an Abismo Negro one. I was waiting for a martinete that didn’t come and he’s going to need a moment like that to work. Without one, Abismo Negro Jr. is going to quickly feel like the third versions of Psicosis and Histeria, guys in suits who never got anywhere in AAA out of it.

The tecnicos looked solid in the second match. Arkangel Divino had a good debut in the new gimmick if he made it very obvious that he was under the mask. Eclipse had an inventive final stretched before Poder del Norte destroyed him. This was about at the level of most of the recent Poder del Norte matches, where they help the tecnicos look spectacular for about six minutes and then destroy them for the last three. The destruction remains good, but they remain ready for something a bit more.

The opener was the usual AAA opener match with craziness. Toxin seemed to get the high score with the diving senton to the floor but Low Rider was also doing ill-advised things. This didn’t seem to build to any particular big finish but it kept on the absurd level for most of the match. Perhaps the weirdest thing was Aramis & Toxin doing good mat work to start a match, which is not something normally done in AAA
