7) El Diablo & Lady Flammer b Demonio Infernal & Lunatik Extreme [table, chair]
8) Hausser L ImposibleFresero Jr.Dinamic BlackBlack DragónAtomic StarEternoBlack Danger (Baja California)Aero BoyCenturionBaby StarFly Warrior [cage, mask, hair]
Eterno took Hausser’s hair.

The cage match teased Centvrion versus Dinamic Black as the finish before things changed. The fifth match was said to be the best match on the show. They also had a strong turnout, which would make this the best attended solo Mexa Wrestling show yet. An irony of the PALL alliance Lucha Memes helped construct is Arena Naucalpan has been easily able to replace the Memes shows with other partners now that Memes isn’t involved.

Tonight’s Arena Puebla is a loaded show. It’s probably meant to be the 66th Anniversary celebration of the building opening, though they’ve not quite mentioned it. There’s both a title match and an apuesta match, which counts as a major show when it happens in Arena Puebla.

The matches themselves aren’t super promising. It’s the title match that’s more of a problem. King Jaguar versus Perverso is not a particularly interesting match to me, but Jaguar has his fans. The local vs local apuesta matches usually end up overdelivering, with the crowd helping them along. It’s probably not going to be one of the greatest matches over but it should still be enjoyable. Nueva Generacion Dinamita and Los Ingobernables met last week to set up their title match. It was not enjoyable. NGD have been reliably good in big matches, but Rush and friends haven’t seemed like a good fit for what they do and vice versa.

The semi-main has Ultimo & Gran Guerrero teaming with Negro Casas against Angel de Oro, Soberano Jr., and Volador. Hijos del Infierno team up against Kraneo, Stigma, and Titan. Marcela & Skadi, mother and daughter, are a two-person team for only the second time in CMLL against Amapola & Dalys. (CMLL just doesn’t book 2v2 women’s matches; this seems to be only happening as a result of other people being booked.) Rey Samuray & Tigre Rojo start the show off against Fuerza Chicana & Toro Bill Jr. The show airs at 9 pm.

Not much news otherwise. Today marks two months away from AAA’s show in Madison Square Garden. There’s been no local promotion I’ve seen, really nothing at all except occasional mentions on commentary since the show was announced in April. I don’t expect there to be much of anything until after TripleMania. You can still purchase first row tickets, though at a very marked up price with other amenities involved. The ticket map itself has been turned off, presumably to hide how the show is doing. (The LA show map has not been turned off.) I’m sure the AEW folks will get a hard sell in person about working that show when they come to the AAA taping on Thursday and again at TripleMania.

This week’s Box Y Lucha #3993 is dedicated to Paco Alonso.

Lineups

CMLL (SUN) 07/21/2019 Arena México
1) Bengala & Sonic vs Cholo & Yago
2) Halcón Suriano Jr., Leono, Sangre Imperial vs Apocalipsis, Hijo del Signo, Príncipe Odín Jr.
3) Súper Astro Jr. vs Oro Jr. [lightning]
4) Black Panther, Blue Panther Jr., Rey Cometa vs Kawato San, Misterioso Jr., Olímpico
5) Atlantis Jr., El Audaz, Titán vs Hijo del Villano III, Máscara Año 2000, Villano IV
6) Místico, Valiente, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero

A show. Seems weird Kawato beat Audaz and Audaz is higher up than him. Villano IV is back for the first time since May.

Note the Saturday Arena Coliseo show is the Lucha Libre Real Liger farewell one. CMLL’s not put up that lineup on their website. Dr. Wagner Jr. is teasing doing something with old rival Liger while he’s in Mexico. A match w be politically difficult at the moment.

IWRG (SUN) 07/21/2019 Arena Naucalpan
1) Brazo De Oro Jr. & Manchas vs Death Metal & Neza Kid
2) Iraki & Lilith Dark vs Ludark Shaitan & Zuzuki
3) Atomic Star, Black Dragón, Príncipe Aéreo vs Dragón Fly, La Mosca, Marado
4) Aeroboy, Aramis, Imposible vs Demonio Infernal, Eterno, Lunatik Extreme
5) Hijo De Dos Caras, Hijo del Alebrije, Máscara Sagrada Jr. vs El Hijo del Medico Asesino, Galeno Del Mal, Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr.
6) Dr. Wagner Jr., Trauma I, Trauma II vs El Mesías, Hijo de Canis Lupus, Máscara Año 2000 Jr.

Wagner & Mesias are into headline next week, with a former TripleMania victim involved. The fourth match looks good.

Tr3S Caidas (SAT) 07/27/2019 Auditorio de Tijuana, Tijuana, Baja California
1) Galáctico & Galaxy vs Centurión & Príncipe
2) Terror Azteca vs Torito NegroXperiaUnicorno [Tr3s Caidas CRUISER]
3) Black Spider, Rubi Gardenia, Ryan Kidd vs Ciclope, Cinico, Scream
4) Puma King vs Black Destiny
5) Bestia 666 & Rey Horus vs Flamita & Flip Gordon and Jonathan & Tony Casanova
6) Dragón Lee (CMLL) vs Bandido (Indie)

Tr3s Caidas has run the much smaller Arena Big Punch until this show. The top matches should be good but this seems like a big step up in building size.

1) Pequeño Nitro & Pequeño Violencia b Acero & Aéreo
rudos took 1/3.
2) Amapola, La Seductora, Metálica b Avispa Dorada, La Guerrera, Lluvia

4) Rey Cometa b Flyer [lightning]
5) Atlantis, Místico, Soberano Jr. b Felino, Mephisto, Rey Bucanero
tecnicos took 2 (excessive violence DQ)/3
6) La Bestia Del Ring, Rush, Terrible b Ángel de Oro, Carístico, Niebla Roja
Ingobernables took 1/3. Rush attacked Angel de Oro with the backboard as medical personal tried to stretcher him out.

That seems more like Rush being Rush rather than anything for sure setting up a match. Not a lot else going on here.

Flyer seemed more likely to get the lightning match win due to his family connection, something Rey Cometa played off of in his victorious promo.

Televisa aired a piece on Paco Alonso as part of their CMLL show this Saturday, including scenes from the mass.

GH (SAT) 07/13/2019 Gimnasio Hercules, Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal [+LuchaTV]

5) Mr. Iguana b Fresero Jr.
6) Arez & Látigo b Puma King & Ricky Marvin
great match

The main event sounds like something worth tracking down, but mostly there wasn’t much to talk about this night so I’m including more results.

The two New York City lucha libre shows drew well for the area. The show headlined by Sam Adonis/LA Park (with Laredo Kid/Extreme Tiger vs Gringo Loco/Brandon Kirk) sounds like it had slightly more people, maybe around 400, then the El Hijo del Santo show. No Alberto at that Santo show. It is probably not a great sign that the NYC casual fan audience that will go out and see lucha libre just to see some lucha libre tops out at maybe 800 and AAA is running MSG there. Double it for the holiday or  triple it for promotion, and it’s still not going to a promising number. AAA has so much work to do.

Nacion Lucha Libre says their next show is 07/27 in Fresnillo, Zacetecas. No building or card. It doesn’t appear they’ve advertised it locally, judging from Facebook posts from the area being surprised about this announcement.

The AAA TV show with Laredo Kid vs Hijo del Vikingo finally made it’s way to YouTube today. It probably isn’t effective to have matches turn up on YouTube over a month after they air but YouTube isn’t pulling the cart right now.

Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. announced he’s going to NOAH soon. NOAH’s in the middle of one tour right now and the next is a 08/18 to 09/16 N1 heavyweight singles league. I’d guess he’ll be part of that. I’m not sure he’s ready to impress in something like that, but it’ll be good for his own personal experience.

I can’t really explain this RIOT parody bit easily but it is weird enough to link to anyway.

CMLL promos: Ciber, Los Munoz, Hijo del Villano III, Atlantis Jr.,  and the micro tecnicos.

Press room interviews:

Not much of a show. CMLL keeps going back to teasing Ciber in a hair match and Ciber is less over every time they try it. They did a face-saving finish to avoid ending this, but the lack of post-match promos suggest they have no strong plans for it in the immediate future. Ciber needs to actually win a feud to get people to see him as a real threat, but his matches aren’t at the level of CMLL main events and it’s hard to put him in a situation where he might win. Then again, in a year of major feuds for La Bestia del Ring and Mascara 2000, Ciber isn’t taking the average down all that much. The rest of the show was not much better.

Francisco “Paco” Alonso was honored with a mass earlier in the afternoon. The Gladiatores has video of the function. Fray Tormenta presiding over it, with Atlantis Jr., Negro Casas, and Amapola participating in parts of the ceremony. Staff and current CMLL luchadors were in attendance, as were wrestlers coming back just for this. I’d expect to see the Octagons and Fantasmas. It stuck out to see people like Rayo de Jalisco, who probably had to get on a flight to be part of this, or Ripper (Psicosis II), who left CMLL two years ago and still wanted to be here for Paco Alonso.

NJPW also honored Paco Alonso before today’s show.

AAA , EMW (FRI) 07/12/2019 Auditorio de Tijuana, Tijuana, Baja California
1) Adrian Quest, Drake, Fantastik b Griff, Kamikaze, Xcalibur
Fantastik beats Xcalibur.
2) Big Mami, Rayo Star, Tony Casanova b Genio del Aire, Keyra, Lady Maravilla
Keyra suffered a knee injury. Big Mami beat Lady Maravilla. Promotion paid tribute to Perro Aguayo after the match.
3) Hijo Del Vikingo & Laredo Kid b Arkángel Divino & Black Boy and Douglas James & Jake Atlas
Vikingo beat Black Boy in a very good match.
4) Mamba, Máximo, Niño Hamburguesa, Willie Mack b Eddie Edwards, El Hijo del Medico Asesino, Gringo Loco (Illinois), Jonathan
Hamburguesa splash on Gringo Loco & Jonathan.
5) La Hiedra, Rey Escorpión, Texano Jr. b Drago, Lady Shani, Puma King
Rey Escorpion beat Puma King. A fight broke in the crowd after the match.
6) Psycho ClownMichael ElginMurder ClownTaurus [EMW HEAVY]
Earlier, Psycho Clown got beat up by Elgin, Taurus and Rey Escorpion, with Escorpion demanding to be included in this match. He was not included. Psycho beat Taurus to win the vacant title (last held by Mil Muertes in 2017.)
7) PaganoJoe LiderPsicosis INick Gage
bumped up to the main event due to being an extreme match. Pagano beat Joe Lider in a violent match.

Turnout was strong and this was said to be a good show over all. So Cal Uncensored streamed the three-way tag match on Periscope, which is definitely worth checking out. I think Periscope videos disappear after 24 hours, so make it a priority.

Keyra’s knee injury does not look good. She posted an Instagram story this morning with her in a wheelchair at the airport. Keyra being out for a while would have a minimal effect on TripleMania – it’s already a multi-women match with ladders, an easy way to determine a new champ if need be. It would be crushing for Keyra to be out just after she won her first AAA championship.

Speaking of AAA injury news: Brian Cage was removed from the 07/26 DEFY wrestling show due to the leg injury that’s hampered him for the last few months. That’s more than a week later than Cage’s match against Killer Kross for AAA in Aguascalientes. AAA tends not to announce when people are off shows ahead of time, but we can assume he won’t be making that show. I think one of the reasons Cage was booked for this Aguascalientes show is because he missed a previous one due to injury as well; they’re just not having much luck with that. I’m not sure who would replace Cage. AAA’s teased Kross versus Murder Clown in the past and that would be the easiest solution.

Muneca de Plata, one of Brazo de Plata’s daughters, has opened a YouTube channel as Zara Alvarado. She still was wrestling in a mask in the most recent match I’ve seen of her, but I totally forget she actually lost her mask last year.

Shows this weekend:

Saturday

Sunday

I didn’t notice this until it was pointed out yesterday, but the changed date for the Lyger Arena Lopez Mateos show (Thursday to Sunday) meant a fair amount of people got changed from the card. Bandido is off due to Ring of Honor TV, so the main event is now Lyger & Mistico versus Caristico & Ultimo Guerrero. Ricky Marvin is among the guys underneath who are now no longer there, probably because they also had conflicting bookings.

RIOT on 08/23 (“Rina en El Cerro de la Silla”) at Arena Femenil Monterrey

The 08/24 show will have the semifinals (two three-way matches) and the finals (1v1), as well as matches with the eliminated people and perhaps other people as well. There won’t be an announcement of who faces who in the tournament until they come out on Sunday, I believe.

Germany’s WXW announced MexaBlood (Flamita & Bandido) for their 10/04-10/06 World Tag League. The format of that has changed from a round-robin to a straight elimination tag team tournament this year, which means there’s a shot both could end up in singles matches by the end of the weekend.

NJPW announced their 10/16 to 11/03 tour will include the Super Junior Tag League. CMLL teams have been included before and likely will again.

Indio Kikappoo – the one of Saltillo and not Monclova – passed away Wednesday. He was a luchador in the area for about 20 years and then worked as a referee and behind the scenes.

Lineups

CMLL (FRI) 07/19/2019 Arena México
1) Sonic & Súper Astro Jr. vs Cancerbero & Raziel
2) Ángel de Oro, Esfinge, Niebla Roja vs Ephesto, Hechicero, Luciferno
3) Marcela © vs Amapola [CMLL WOMEN]
3rd defense
4) Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Soberano Jr., Templario [Relevos Increíbles]
5) Hijo de LA Park, LA Park, LA Park Jr. vs La Bestia Del Ring, Místico, Rush
6) Jushin Liger vs CarísticoNegro CasasÚltimo Guerrero [Relevo CMLL]

Liger’s farewell show is a loaded card. The main event is a four-way match with a funny name. LA Park is back to take on the Munoz. It’s supposedly for a while, but every LA Park run is a week by week situation. I guess I’ll finally have to add LA Park Jr. to the database.

The fourth match is a unique match, a little twist on the national champs versus world trios champs match they’ve run in the past. Soberano fit in well with the Guerreros last time out.

Marcela versus Amapola has no build, but it’s there because CMLL is trying to make this a super card and believes that’s still a super match. Same thing with the second match; it’s there because CMLL thinks it’ll be good.

CMLL on Marca: 2019-07-12

that kind of night

Recapped: 07/12/2019

Matches:

Dragón Lee, Místico, Rush beat Gilbert el Boricua, Mr. Niebla, The Chris
(13:02 [2:13, 2:41, 8:08], 2/3, ok, 01:25:23)

Último Guerrero beat Ciber the Main Man
(8:22, 2/3 DQ, below average, 01:50:59)

  1. Ciber spear (1:56)
  2. UG pulpo guerrero (2:39)
  3. DQ Ciber for ref attack (3:47)

What happened:

so many moonsaults

Ciber took out referee Edgar with an accidental charge in the third fall of the main event, then fouled Ultimo Guerrero and put him in a crab submission. Edgar recovered and tapped Ciber on the shoulder. Ciber was sure it was to indicate a win. It, of course, was instead a DQ. Ciber harshly shoved Edgar down and out of the ring.

Paco Alonso was remembered prior to the fourth match.

Villano III Jr. unmasked Atlantis Jr. for the DQ in their match.

Thoughts:

This card didn’t look highly promising on paper and didn’t surprise in reality. I kind of just want to write the whole thing off as a group of wrestlers still dealing with the shock and depression of their well-liked boss suddenly passing away. The hardest working people on the show were the Munoz, who was specifically doing it as a tribute. Most everyone else seemed to just be muddling their way thru their state of mind. The Monday and Tuesdays show wasn’t great but they rarely are, it might have had a more noticeable effect here. Next week, with Liger and LA Park around, should be a lot better.

I want to write this show off for me too after spending the first hour of this show trying to figure out why my computer won’t play the audio and sound in sync from YouTube anymore, but I don’t think I get that.

Stuka smooth into the ‘rana

Ciber and Ultimo Guerrero was a boring match devoid of many highlights or entertainment. It was a slog. The very square peg of Ciber didn’t really fit into Ultimo Guerrero’s round hole of a match formula, even the cut down simplified version they did here. UG wasn’t at his best either, slipping on his big leap over the barricade. Ciber was game to take the superbomb, but it wasn’t his night and it’s hard to believe this is going to ever work. The crowd was into this feud only as much as they always like cheering Ultimo Guerrero; there’s no steam in Ciber and the weak finish didn’t help him either. This didn’t work, but it hasn’t worked any time in the last three years. CMLL just can’t let it go for unclear reasons.

The semimain was probably the most fun match of the show, with Mistico, Dragon Lee and Rush enjoying getting to be a team. Their opponents didn’t really add much. Niebla seemed to spend most of the match on the apron while Gilbert and Sharly wrestled as less mobile Hijos del Infierno. This was very much matching making based on trying to get people their promised amount of bookings rather than trying to put together something good and it showed. The one silver lining is Gilbert looked better knocking around Mistico than he has in most of his time in CMLL. He may be still successful as a heavyweight bullying small guys – you know, exactly what he did with Fenix – but that’s not a dynamic CMLL pursues often. The heavyweight battles they want for him aren’t working.

The Volador/NGD trios followed right out of the Paco Alonso tribute. I’m probably projecting things that aren’t really there, but it came off like a purposefully easy match to get the crowd back in. NGD did a new bit of chaining some of their solo finishing moves in series to close out a fall, but most of this was a house main event stuff. They did a “star with a tapatia” fall ending to start and another one that ended directly after the dives, this wasn’t particularly deep. It was fine for what it was.

Atlantis Jr.’s team got beat up and came back to win the first fall of the tercera, which is always a sign the match is probably going two falls. There’s no point in going in so heavy with Hijo del Villano III and Atlantis Jr. at this point, they’re both not completely ready for it and it’d be a tragedy to have them do an actual 1v1 mask match any time soon. CMLL just can’t resist nostalgia in general, and second general rivalries are irresistible nostalgia stuff. Hechicero & Stuka had some good moments. Atlantis continues to struggle to move around.

down he goes

Microman & Chamuel were really good in the micros match, even with Chamuel not doing a lot to hide how much he was helping at the times. The other four didn’t add a whole lot and occasionally took some away. The match was fine, there are just bigger problems here. The first micro matches showed some progression and growth from the wrestlers. That’s not there anymore, and this match felt like some of them were getting worse. It’s one match but the micros could use a positive sign in general.

Halcon Suriano Jr. seems like a guy who would keep doing moonsaults forever if the situation allowed it, and the situation here just about did. I was most distracted during this match, which seemed like a not great night out of the rudos and about a usual one for the tecnicos. Miguel Linares was very excited to refer to Suriano’s submission as La Lanza de Halcon so I’ll note it as well.

LA Park replaced Dr. Wagner (AAA) on June 21st. The Puerto Ricans used a foul causing Ricardo Rodriguez to interfere to help Alberto win.

A strong turnout for the promotion’s first show. The building didn’t seem full but it looked good enough. This should start airing July 20th and will likely be broken up over a couple of episodes, but it’s also already up on YouTube. Bandido & Horus and Wagners/Parks sound like the best-received match.

They did well despite the weird day, the card changes and apparently starting an hour late for no obvious reason. It is also a weird situation when the only ongoing feud appears to be Sexy Dulce versus Kamille. Promotions elsewhere have leaned heavily into being episodic, setting up big storyline hooks to keep you paying attention to the next show. Promotions in Mexico – this one and what I suspect we’ll see with Pro Wrestling Mexico this weekend – go with the idea that if they just put enough stars on the show and the people have a good time, that’ll be enough to keep them coming back next time.

A fight broke out in the crowd during the main event, with LA Park and MVP helping break it up. It’s a rare case of LA Park stopping a crowd brawl instead of inciting it.

They did a sort of red carpet deal before the show to do a lot of interviews with the bigger names, which did allow media to write about the show being a success without waiting for it to actually happen.  Alberto said things about how people wanted to stop them but they’d cut their own head off to use to have the same level of talent as Nacion Lucha Libre. Alberto plans on being president of the promotion but not wrestling on every show. He said Wagner, Fenix, and Penta couldn’t participate due to contractual issues. Alberto frames it as generously agreeing to allow Fenix & Penta out of their deals to let them grow as wrestlers and says someone else (Wagner?) couldn’t read his contract. Alberto was not bothered by any of this, boasting that the new card was even better than the old one. Alberto is a charming storyteller, which has helped a great deal the last decade. He also did a big rah rah speech hyping up the promotion before the matches started.

Alberto and the promotion mentioned there’s a show in Zacatecas “next week.” No date or location or card has been announced.

CMLL today has Ciber the Main Main versus Ultimo Guerrero as the main event. They met three years ago on a CMLL show. It wasn’t good. It probably won’t be better three years later. They rematched a few weeks later in Guadalajara but watching another Ciber/UG match seemed like a poor use of time. Guess it’s the poor use of time I’m making tonight. The fear is this is the Aniversario main event – either in singles or with more people being drawn in for a cage match – and they’ll signal it tonight. The saving grace is CMLL’s done a lot of starts of things which looked like big main events this year and few of them have actually happened. It’s at the point where if they end the show making hair match challenges it may mean nothing. If they end the show making hair match challenges and specifically call out the Aniversario show, we may be in trouble.

This is not an overall strong show. Dragon Lee, Mistico and Rush get to team up as a family, but opposition of Gilbert, The Chris, and Mr. Niebla does not suggest a strong match. NGD versus Volador, Valiente and Titan has a chance to be decent. Atlantis Jr gets to continue his feud with Hijo del Villano III, with his father, Stuka Jr., Ephesto and Mephisto along. Villano IV is MIA, not having been seen in CMLL in a couple of months. The micros might get the best reaction of the night, as Microman & Gallito Tapario team with Atomo against Chamuel, Zacarias and Guapito. As always, the third men on these teams are the biggest issues. Halcon Suriano Jr. & Principe Diamante open against Coyote & Grako, which has a chance to be better than a usual opener.

The show will stream on Marca (though the player is missing from that page) and their YouTube channel (no link there either!) I’ll stream it as well as long as those links turn up.

Lucha Central has a preview of the show.

The Arena Mexico mass for Paco Alonso is going on now. Lots of luchadors are in attendance.

Ciber told Marca that Ultimo Guerrero may run the CMLL school and teach people how to wrestle, but he knows how to wrestle too. That’s a bold claim. Ciber wants the hair match but also wants to win the heavyweight title first. Ultimo Guerrero also wants a hair match, though he’s willing to do a cage match.

NJPW will honor Paco Alonso with a ceremony before their show tomorrow morning.

El Grafico talks to Metalico about his switch to being a referee. It’s said here to involve some quick paperwork and passing a knowledge test. Metalico mentions he was a policeman at one point in his life and this is sort of along the same lines to him.

La Maligna mentioned many dreams of hers have come true when talking to her hometown paper about appearing on lottery tickets. She’s more talking about getting to travel to Japan.

Ring of Honor announced Caristico, Soberano Jr., Stuka Jr. against Barbaro Cavernario, Hechicero, and Templario for their 08/09. That’s the CMLL trios match they were teasing and it is a great match. It is Barbaro Cavernario and Templario’s debut in Ring of Honor and both are going to do great.

Torreon area luchadora Piel Canela Jr. is returning to the ring this week after being out a year and a half with a serious knee injury that left her in the hospital for two months. A lot happened in that time. She came to Mexico City looking for help, Misterioso Jr. recommended a doctor who could operate quickly and reduced cost to almost 30% of the original price. Her luchador husband Drako worked three jobs to support them while she was out hurt. Shocker gave them a job at his restaurant despite not having the experience, got them a meal, drove them home that first day, and advanced them a week of salary. Canela started training at Arena Mexico as she was recovering, suffered some stomach pains, and thought the training was just really hard. It turned out her appendix had burst. Neighbors helped her find a social program to pay for the surgery. Later, Drako and Canela (and their small child) got held up at gunpoint at a market, policemen happened to come by, and an actual firefight took place. The family was all ok and several of the robbers were put in jail. After all that, she’s back wrestling Sunday in Plaza de Toros Torreon.

I haven’t watched the ChilangaMask show that went up on +Lucha yesterday and the reports at the time were not strong. It still is worth checking out the last six or so minutes, where Coliseo Coacalco owner (and usual weekly promoter) Justiciero furiously ends the main event because he hates the extreme stuff they’re doing so much (specifically teases of bottles to the head), and so they try to fight into the parking lot instead for a minute or two. Chilanga Mask has amusingly run nothing but an Anniversary show the last few years in Coliseo Coacalco, but I don’t think they’re going to be back next year. No indie promotion has been in Coacalco since this May show; the Memes show that’s coming up in Gimnasio Hercules is usually there and other indies have run it as well. I don’t know that venue is actually closed off from them at the moment but Justiciero was for sure angry.

What happened:

nothing about this is good for Mije

This show will be remembered as the strangely long Tuesday show but we’re still not sure why. Dragon Lee beat Cavernario in their match but there’s nothing there more than the result. Polvora and Blue Panther Jr. exchanged mask match challenges but it didn’t seem entirely serious.

Thoughts:

Cavernario going to the top rope against Dragon Lee in the third fall of the main event seemed like a very bad sign, because it was only going to end with Cavernario getting double stomped and that often ends CMLL matches. I breathed a sigh of relief when Cavernario kicked out of that double stomp. Dragon Lee immediately gave him the desnucadora for the win. I shouldn’t have breathed. This is a good match where both men worked hard for the time that it feels mean to degenerate as not their best, but also it was very clearly not their best. They did better than most people would do in a thrown off singles match on an off night but Cavernario & Dragon Lee have raised the bar higher than that. I assume the show length caused them to go shorter than they would’ve, but I’m not sure of that. It would probably be good for us if they had the sense to not go all out on a Tuesday but it’s not quite as good for us.

Often the triple dive spot leads to the tecnicos winning a fall. In this semi-final, it led the tecnicos coming back in the ring, falling down, and immediately getting submitted. That doesn’t seem great. Seemed weird that Gran Guerrero was getting a pin on Caristico to win a match. In between was well-worked match that didn’t really peak but used the time the best of three long trios matches.

Espanto Jr. will get over if he keeps doing this

The fourth match went long, but it felt like a normal match worked at a slightly more leisurely pace. Angel de Oro, Niebla Roja, and Soberano still make a good trio and the Casas family worked well as opponents. Angel de Oro is getting a lot of screams. Tiger seemed to like working with new people and I appreciate the effort to start something with Soberano even after the match.

The Polvora trios match didn’t feel totally weird until the second fall. The first fall was long but in the way that some midcard matches just can randomly have long falls. By the second fall, there was brawling out to the crowd for a while for no perceptible reason. The reason so had to be stalling. After the match, they let Polvora talk, brawl, and talk more when they’re usually very quick to shut the mics off when things are going too long. Edgar didn’t try to cut it off either, which meant it the weird meandering promos were part of some of plan. The match itself didn’t seem like a plan, something that meandered with comebacks and endings coming with little setup. The whole match didn’t help anyone, but Dark Magic popping up on a stream for the first time in months to lay in some chokes was very much not great. He’s got the most robotic stomps I’ve ever seen and it has to be some kind of messed up stomp for me to notice how bad they are.

The second match was fine for who was involved. CMLL cameras are really good at shooting Super Astro Jr.’s reverse tope. This match also featured the worse version of the front cracker/wheelbarrow suplex spot I’ve seen. The rudos did seem to have teamwork spots, so I believe their desire to be a permeant trio is not just some random thought. It just doesn’t seem likely to happen.

i like this bump when it’s not from a destroyer
