Lucha Capital Week 6, Casas surgery, CMLL holiday schedule

that doesn’t seem fun

After the match, Lady Shani appeared to announce was taking herself out of the tournament but offered Taya a title versus title match should she win the entire thing.

seemingly a replacement match for Taurus/Murder Clown, with Golden Magic getting back into the tournament with a win.
5) Australian Suicide b Laredo Kid Facebook video (posted by LuchaCapital)

This continued the trend of main events worth going out of your way to watch.

Australian Suicide, Pentagon Jr., Pagano, and Psycho Clown have definitely advanced to the final on 12/09. The final show is supposed to start with three four-way matches, so there are eight more spots to fill. Aerostar, Drago, Golden Magic, Hijo del Vikingo, Keyra, Killer Kross, Laredo Kid, Mascarita Sagrada, Maximo, Taya, Texano Jr., and Vanilla are definitely eligible for those eights spots and should wrestle next week. Scarlett, Murder Clown, and Taurus may be eligible. They’re also just making up rules as they go so who knows.

On Informa, Negro Casas revealed he had surgery for one his knee meniscus. He had it back in early November and expects to be back in January.

CMLL is also planning on running their usual winter holiday schedule. Shows scheduled for New Year’s Eve and Christmas Eve will be moved to the day after. That means the Monday Arena Puebla shows move to Tuesday, with the Arena Mexico & Arena Coliseo Guadalajara shows going on the same night as scheduled. CMLL has enough bodies to fill out three shows on the same night (and that’ll still leave some early match wrestlers unbooked), though it’s a different question if they have enough talent. The Tuesday Guadalajara show usually has more star power than the Tuesday Arena Mexico show. That might reverse for the holidays since the top stars will prefer to work in Mexico City so they can pick up an extra booking of three later that night around the Mexico City area. The end product of the Yago/Camorra feud, be it a singles match, a tag or a cage match, will probably take place on one of these days.

For streaming purposes, this schedule means there’s two more Monday night Puebla show for the year. The last show to air will be the 12/17 show, and then nothing on Monday until 01/08. CMLL will be down to ‘only’ two streams a week. Those Tuesday Puebla shows are very unlikely to be taped; last year, we never saw the Asturiano versus Espectro Maligno apuesta match and a Mephisto versus Caristico title match because of the schedule. (It’s also unlikely they’ll post results.) There’s a very slight chance the Sunday shows from 12/23 & 12/30 will be recorded and streamed if CMLL needs replacement TV content, but probably they’ll just reuse matches on different shows.

Caristico says the injury that has taken him off lineups was a hip injury made worse last Friday, He expects to be back in a week.

Reina Isis says CMLL has the best women’s roster in all of Mexico. I don’t think this true, though AAA women didn’t exactly kill it this week. It is not exactly a high bar even if it was true.

Leo Riano noted Keyra missed the AAA TV taping to do the WWE tryouts, though he also says he hasn’t actually asked AAA to see if Keyra had permission to skip the show. It would be strange for AAA to suddenly care about advertised people not showing up on their shows.

Saturday’s AAA TV taping in Xalapa has a mystery person teaming with Vikingo & Laredo Kid. That always seemed like Angelikal’s spot and I’m thinking they just left it a mystery because they knew he’d be Myzteziz Jr. by this point. That’s probably also why the title match bit got dropped from the OGT/Poder del Norte match at the same time.

The Crash announced (ex WWE Horn)Swoggle will be on their January show. Many people have commented hoping for Mascarita Dorada/Torito to pay off their WWE issue.

Casandro is in France to do press wrk for her documentary, which debuted yesterday.

El Imparcial caught up with the mini Parka and the other luchadors from the viral video.

Valiente’s restaruant opens on December 15th.

Lucha Talk has a new episode.

Lineups

CMLL (MON) 12/10/2018 Arena Puebla
1) Astro & Sonic vs Ares & Guerrero Espacial
2) Millenium & Rey Samuray vs El Perverso & King Jaguar
3) Átomo, Gallito, Microman vs Chamuel, Guapito, Perico Zakarías
4) Fuego, Tritón, Volcano vs Misterioso Jr., Sagrado, Vangellys
5) Ángel de Oro, Carístico, Niebla Roja vs Cavernario, Hechicero, Rey Bucanero
6) Volador Jr. vs Terrible

Micros coming to Puebla is the most interesting thing here. Sonic gets back to back weeks of bookings, which is rare for him.

CMLL (TUE) 12/11/2018 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Black Sugar, Luminoso, Magnum vs Gran Kenut, Guerrero de la Muerte, Tyson La Bestia
2) Avispa Dorada, Lluvia, Marcela vs Amapola, Dalys, Tiffany
3) Esfinge, Stigma, Titán vs Difunto, Hechicero, Pólvora
4) Carístico, Kráneo, Volcano vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón
5) Volador Jr. vs Último Guerrero

Volador has singles matches on Friday, Monday and Tuesday. That doesn’t seem like a great idea. Caristioc being listed back is probably subject to change.

Lucha Capital: 2018-12-05

that area is the danger zone

Recapped: 12/05/2018

Matches:

Chessman beat Bengala
(5:06, powerbomb, ok, 00:13:34)

Psycho Clown beat Texano Jr.
(8:56, casita, ok, 00:24:49)

Taya beat La Hiedra
(5:45, double chickenwing slam, ok, 00:40:59)

Golden Magic beat Niño Hamburguesa
(7:20, 450 splash, ok, 01:03:28)

Australian Suicide beat Laredo Kid
(7:02, shooting star press, good, 01:19:43)

What happened:

high flying star Psycho Clown

Murder Clown & Taurus were advertised but did not appear. Golden Magic & Niño Hamburguesa, who both had been eliminated, were given a match where the winner would advance to the wild card round.

Lady Shani also appeared to take herself out of the tournament for no explained reason. Shani offered Taya a championship versus championship match should Taya win the Lucha Capital tournament.

Thoughts:

The main event was the best match on the show by a big margin, though it didn’t hit for me as much as it seemed for other people watching. It had lots of crazy action, with Australian Suicide pulling out a shooting star press variation we haven’t seen from him in action before. They started off crazy with both men diving out of the ring onto their feet before Laredo leveled Suicide with a tope, and then fought on the restaurant tables. Suicide made the bold choice of trying a shooting star press off the table onto Laredo on the floor and seemed to bang a foot on the edge of the table on the way down. He was limping around immediately after. There were moments that looked a little bit off at times the rest of the way, and that foot had to be bugging him. There were also just random bits of no-selling moves throughout. It wasn’t like they came one after each other or they were happening at a big moment, it was more like a dice roll hit 6 and so the move didn’t actually hurt. Both guys did it, so maybe it was just a thing I didn’t get. This was pretty exciting, as you’d think with these two guys involved, but they can do even better.

Golden Magic

Golden Magic & Niño Hamburguesa fit the same description as most of the undercard. There were a few fun highlight spots and watching the highlights were more fun than watching the match in entirety. The dives looked cool, Hamburguesa landing the multiple corner smashes for once (everyone usually moves on the second one) was interesting. Golden Magic came up quite short on his 450 splash at the end, and this match was short of his previous two matches. AAA didn’t really have many options on who to use as a replacement from the eliminated people but maybe putting Niño Hamburguesa in the tournament wasn’t the greatest thing for him.

Taya versus La Hiedra was just an average match. Taya was more obviously a tecnica this time. This match felt like both were being a ruda. They had some nice spots and the stuff in between wasn’t bad, but it didn’t really string together in any interesting way. It wasn’t bad but maybe Hiedra isn’t as yet as good as he looks in the tags and multiperson matches.

slide scissors

Psycho had a lot of energy but his match was nothing special. Texano tired quick. Maybe Psycho missing the catch on his dive didn’t help, but Texano wasn’t moving much when he was moving. That kind of limited what he was doing to taking Psycho Clown’s surprisingly high flying offense. The Psycho Clown/Murder Clown match was Psycho’s better match. I hope he gets some fun people to work within the final because I think Psycho has a great match in him with the right mix.

Bengala tried to make up for all the offense he’s not been able to get on TV in this one appearance. It was alright. Chessman breaking out the top rope tornillo on this show was wild. It didn’t hit, and the match didn’t quite hit either, but it did make a lot of noise for the five minutes it lasted. It was just a bunch of moves until Chessman landed a hard powerbomb and that was that. This was a borderline match for me, the second best on the show.

Promos from Misterioso (who seems to have given up stealing masks) and Guanatos Style. No real feuds, maybe the third match was the best match.

5) Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero b Carístico, Valiente, Volador Jr.
rudos took 1/3. UG used the ropes to pin Volador, setting up a singles match between them next week.

CMLL is going to run Volador versus Ultimo Guerrero on Friday and Volador versus Ultimo Guerrero again four days later. Those two aren’t creative with their matches in general. Twice in two days is going to make it worse.

Negro Casas will appear on Informa today, talking about his recent surgery. There’s been no word about what injury he had.

Tonight is episode 6 of Lucha Capital. It is the final match of the second round of matches. Everyone will have had two matches (or just be out of the tournament, like Fenix.) It is an AAA tournament, it is unlikely everything will make sense by the end, but here is where everything stands:

wrestling tonight with 1 win: Australian Suicide, Laredo Kid, Psycho Clown, Texano Jr.
wrestling tonight with 1 loss: Taya, La Hiedra, Murder Clown, Taurus

eliminated (5): Puma King, Lady Maravilla, Nino Hamburguesa, Golden Magic, Fenix (injury)
advanced to the wild card show (8): Aerostar, Drago, Hijo del Vikingo, Keyra, Killer Kross, Mascarita Sagrada, Maximo, Vanilla
advanced to the final show (3): Pentagon Jr., Pagano, Lady Shani

The way the rules were explained originally, Lucha Capital would have 12 people in the final. That appears to be impossible to happen given the rules that have been announced and the people who are left. Most any outcome leaves 11 people left, so perhaps Scarlett’s role in this tournament is being added in the final week. They’ll also probably have to run tag matches next week, or they’ll be stuck running 7 or 8 singles matches.

That’s next week’s problem. There are no matches announced tonight, because they can’t be accused of changing matches if they don’t announce them. I would figure Psycho Clown advanced to the final and La Hiedra is eliminated, but everything else is unclear.

The WWE Latin America tryout finished yesterday. There’s a picture of the complete (43 person) field on Twitter. WWE is running a show in Chile tonight. That would be the logical place to make any announcements coming out of this tryout.

Impact will return to Fronton Mexico in Mexico City on January 11th and January 12th. That’s a Friday and a Saturday. CMLL probably isn’t running anything big on that Friday, and AAA may not be back until the week after, so this is easier dates for Impact this time around. Maybe they’ll even be able to get Fenix & Penta for both days.

A video of a group of people, including what appears to be a child in a La Parka outfit, doing wrestling bits at a Tijuana stop light went viral yesterday. People doing tricks for tips in Mexico is uncommon but happens; I saw a firebreather once on a trip. Anyway, because it is Parka and a viral video (like the gas station workers who were doing wrestling spots), AAA wants to meet the kid to give him a prize.

Ultimo Maldito was added to Saturday’s AAA TV at Arena Xalapa a few weeks ago. That means today he’s off the MexaWrestling show. Aramis will replace him, facing Rey Horus, Toxin, Arez and Arkangel Divino. Divino is going to be tested not having his brother there.

Arena Lopez Mateos on 12/22 has Templario vs Penta vs Golden Magic.

Bandido is advertised for the 12/30 GALLI show, which seems like another case of taking advantage of a luchador being flown in for AAW the day before.

AAA will put up part 1 of Heroes Inmortales this weekend. They’ve cut down the gap between airing to about 6 weeks from over two months.

LuchaWorld has the latest edition of the Podcast and the latest Lucah Report.

+LuchaTV has a sit-down interview with Demus.

Reforma has a video feature on Vampiro teaching you how to eat well.

A luchador test took place in Ciudad Victoria.

great match roundup, week of 2018-11-24

a rough time for Golden Magic

recaps

past round-up postsMOTYC list

AAA is carrying this lists lately. They have two shows where you might see a good match, and both are hitting with something most every time out. CMLL has one right now, the Friday night show. Once a month, with the right combination of guys, there may be a title match that gets close to Great. Otherwise, the best you can hope from Monday/Tuesday is something good to slip thru, and that’s become rarer.

Tecnico stook 2/3, the last when Volador faked a foul from Terrible.

This went just under 100 minutes, which is pretty short for a Puebla show. Sometimes they go with a longer match when they only run five. Not this time. Third match sounded like the only one worth watching.

Today’s CMLL Tuesday card is full of matches that are close to looking good. They’re just not quite there. There’s also nothing carrying over from last week, except if “Black Panther has underwhelming opponent in a lightning match” is meant to be a story. The main event has NGD vs Angel de Oro, Niebla Roja and anchor Atlantis. Los Guantos Style (Titan, Triton, Esfinge) face Hijos del Infierno (Ephesto, Luciferno, and Mephisto.) Like last night, the tercera could be the best match, where Rey Cometa, Guerrero Maya, and Drone take on Okumura, Kawato, and Virus. The women are the second match and the opener has the first Sangre Imperial streaming appearance in two months. This show will stream at 7:30 pm on CMLL’s YouTube channel.

Guadalajara has the Guerreros versus Caristico, Valiente, and Volador. They seemed to be setting up a Volador/UG match last week, but perhaps that will be adjusted due to the next paragraph.

There are some changes to cards for later this week. Caristico is off Friday and Saturday, and not on Sunday’s show if he was ever meant to be. The Friday main event singles match with no build is now the latest version of the Ultimo Guerrero versus Volador. Atlantis slips into Volador’s place in the semi-main. Diamante Azul fills in on Saturday’s main event. Tuesday substitutions are typically injury changes, though it might be a different case with Caristico and his outside work.

WWE’s PC Instagram was posting photos of the trainees from various countries posing together. I posted the Mexico one. Either Diamante has changed his mask or I don’t recognize the guy in the middle. I don’t recognize the taller men, but Bestia 666 says the guy on the right was a football teammate of his. Everyone’s having a little fun with Raul Mendoza training Ricky Marvin. Marvin is not just more experienced than Mendoza, he was instrumental in Mendoza getting his stint in NOAH that helped get him looked at by WWE in the first place.

Stephanie Vaquer, who’s been wrestling in Mexico, is there as well. Today’s the last day of the tryout; you can see about five seconds of a Lady Maravilla/Zatara match on their Instagram story. WWE usually ends up signing a few people from these tryouts, if only to show they achieved something. I’m not sure if that’s the going to be case here. It may be, but it sounds like this is more scouting for future plans than the present.

Rush will face the Kingdom’s TK O’Ryan on 12/15 in his ROH debut. It appears they’re setting up a Matt Taven/Rush rematch in ROH.

A lucha libre exhibition is open in Puebla until the end of the month.

LuchaWorld has the latest news update.

A rare Saturday show in Naucalpan. This one is being called Lucha Threesome because Nobra (Acapulco) is joining the usual Lucha Memes & Lucha Libre Boom promotion. Ricky Marvin and Loco Max last had a singles match 16 years.

I just watched Eterno versus Aramis last night and Eterno was at least a very good base for a flyer there.

Alas de Oro, Centella Oriental, Mexica, Yakuza vs Danger, Loquillo, Sádico, Yoruba
(Klandestino @ Arena Lopez Mateos on 08/04/2018, 26:18, good, HECTOR GODFREY TV)

This was a good action tag match in front of a crowd who was very excited to see it. Everyone did well, there wasn’t a particular direction to it. It seemed like a fun match to experience live but there were a few points of obvious repositioning and releasing holds for no reason that bothered me on video. Sadico always makes these roundups and then I don’t think to see him the rest of the year, but he remains really good with his dropkicks and his dive among the highlights here. I don’t think I’ve seen Yakuza since he lost his mask. He could use some bigger trunks.

Penta 0M vs Rush vs Carístico
(IWRG @ Arena Naucalpan on 08/16, 12:39, ok, +LuchaTV)

I’m not sure why I included this one on the list to watch. Maybe I hit the wrong button? It is more energetic than most matches involving all these people, but not a great match by any standards. They brawl a bit, they use some weapons, there’s an convoluted finish. It’s fine, it’s a little bit better than fine, but it’s not a particularly satisfying match.

Rush with a bucket

Lady Maravilla vs Keyra
(LLB/Lucha Memes @ Arena Lopez Mateos on 09/16, 5:59, +LuchaTV)

This version of the eternal rivalry seemed surprising for how fast they were getting to the big stuff. It may a little more sense when they were only going six minutes. Still, this flowed better than the Mexa Wrestling match while giving you a look at some of what they could do – it’s a better introduction match for sure. The sequence leading into the campana and Keyra crushing Maravilla’s face was really well done. Keyra is a rare human being who will give her friend a hard elbow in the face and then smile and laugh about it. Maravilla’s finish looked good. Easy enjoyable match.

Hechicero vs Daga
(LLB/Lucha Memes @ Arena Lopez Mateos on 09/16, 19:55, great, +LuchaTV)

This version of Hechicero/Daga was going along better than The Crash September version, and then the referee counted three on a spot where it sure didn’t seem like was the plan and that was it. This match was still building up and it was just cruel for it to end so soon. I’d probably put that match over this one because it had an ending, but this would’ve been easily better had it kept going for a couple more minutes. The smaller sequences were really good. I liked the battle over Hechicero’s anklelock, and Hechicero’s corner knee smash was one of the best he’s done. Daga’s German suplex looked great too. I still have the Crash Iron Man match to watch and my recollection is that didn’t go quite as well. Hope they eventually get a chance for it to go as far as it seemed like it was going to go here.

a sort of wrap around cradle

El Bandido, Flamita, Rey Horus vs Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Templario (CMLL)
(The Crash @ Auditorio de Tijuana on 09/21, 8:45, good, Arena Clandestina)

What Happened: This version is edited, heavily so near the end.

Review: [good]

A strong all action tercera from what we could see. The Mexa Blood & Horuz team are really spectacular throughout the match, looking like the more major league side. Templario carries things for the CMLL team. Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja are fine but didn’t make much of an impact in what we see. (It’s a bit telling that Niebla Roja’s move for the big run of finishes is a Canadian Destroyer, a CMLL version of the fantastic moves, while the indie teams are doing more cutting edge stuff.) An easy fun watch, if frustrating that it had editing where not much was really needed.

Aramis, Freelance, Relámpago vs Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro, Dragón Bane
(AAA/IWRG @ Arena Naucalpan on 10/04, 16:58, good, Internetv Deportes)

Easily the best of the three trios/atomicos in this batch. It built better, it had a fun mat wrestling section with Aramis/Dr. Cerebro while also matching big highspots. The crowd was into this one too, and the screwy finish feels irrelevant because we still got a three count. Relampago had a weak performance in his highlight run, but so many other guys looked great in their time. The dives were pretty cool too. Dragon Ban hasn’t gotten to act like much of a rudo in AAA, gets to do so here, and shows a little bit of a personality. The third fall goes a decent amount of time but doesn’t amount to a lot. This would’ve been a stronger recommendation with a bit more.
