Lucha Capital season 1 finale tonight, CMLL Monday/Tuesday results, LU S5, DTU 11th Anniversary

perhaps each row will be a semi-final three way match

Tecnicos took 1/3. Cavernario vs Caristico feud wasn’t played up

I think they realized Caristico was booked in Mexico City next week, but we’ll see. Perverso/Jaguar seems like the annual 01/01 locals apuesta match we never see, though why they waited until now to start is beyond it. (Do they only get approved to have it/spend money on it a few weeks before? They could’ve still done a non-stip singles match.)

This show goes away from CMLL streams the next two weeks as it moves to a Tuesday 5pm spot for Holidays. Azteca Puebla is airing their own coverage of these events and they have a stream on Facebook, but I don’t know if holiday schedule (both the show moving and whatever they’re airing) will change that next week.

CMLL (TUE) 12/18/2018 Arena México [CMLL, ExcelsiorLost in LuchaLucha CentralThe Gladiatores]

straight falls, both DQs. Yago unmasked Akuma. The mask/hair vs mask/hair match was set for 01/01.

Rudos took 1/3.

CMLL has promos from Akuma & Camorra and Hijo del Signo & Yago to build up the match that still only the most dedicated CMLL fans knows is happening. It has not exactly been the talk of the community. Misterioso and Guerreros Laguneros talk about their wins.

CMLL (TUE) 12/18/2018 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [CMLL]
1) Magnum, Star Black, Tigre Blanco b Carlo Roggi, Exterminador, Mr. Apolo
2) Amapola, La Comandante, Tiffany b Avispa Dorada, Estrellita, La Guerrera
rudos took 2/3.
3) Esfinge, Pegasso, Stigma b Difunto, Pólvora, Universo 2000 Jr.
tecnicos took 2/3. Stigma challenged Difunto to Occidente Middleweight title match.
4) Euforia, Rey Bucanero, Vangellys b Blue Panther, Kráneo, Volcano
rudos took 1/3.
5) Carístico, Diamante Azul, Explosivo b Cavernario, La Bestia Del Ring, Terrible
Explosivo replaced Volador. Tecnicos took 2/3.

Explosivo replacing Volador does not seem like a replacement of “equal weight/value.”

Surprise stream (but this feels like one I should’ve figured out in advance.) Post match of the main seemed to set up Nicho or one of the other members of FdT challenging for the title. You should go see the finish of the semi-main. Jimmy beating Felino is a bit amazing; the DTU guys beating the Secta guys was more expected. Micros match was said to be fun. That’s not the Atlantis Jr. Tiburon. Attendance was not great but better than some DTU shows in that building.

CMLL sent out a press release on January’s Japan trips, mentioning Marcela’s trip to Japan will be from 01/24 to 02/04. She’s only currently listed as wrestling on 01/27 in REINA but I’d guess there’d be more if she’s staying 11 days.

CMLL mentioned Rush defeated TK O’Ryan in his debut in Ring of Honor. They don’t mention Rush got beat up by the Kingdom after, which seems to be setting up a Matt Taven/Rush match (or a team vs team match) at the ROH/NJPW MSG show. They also don’t mention the MLW matches, but that’s no surprise.

Tonight is the final of the Lucha Capital tournament. I wrote a catch-up piece for Voices of Wrestling. There’s a good chance this won’t be it – Konnan’s talked about AAA working on a deal with Facebook to continue the show next year, and I don’t think he’s just blowing smoke. (Jump to the next topic for the smoke blowing.) We know it’ll be an 8:30 pm Facebook show, we know the poster lists Golden Magic, Killer Kross, Pagano, Hijo del Vikingo, Pentagon Jr., Laredo Kid, Australian Suicide, Psycho Clown and Maximo, and we know there will be a winner. Everything else is kind of up for grabs. I’m thinking they’ll run a bonus match, 3 threeway semifinals, and 1 final, but who knows. Maybe Scarlet will still get in the tournament. Maybe Murder Clown will still get in the tournament. It’ll probably have a good match along the way.

AAA had a press conference today. They didn’t say much concrete. It was mostly just to promote the tickets being on sale for the 01/19 show, with a real 2019 press conference on January 8th. Vampiro spoke for AAA at the press conference (no Dorian Roldan, no Konnan), so there’s weird stuff like Vampiro hyping that show as great for Mexico City fans because they’ve never been that close to the city. Maybe he meant central? I don’t know. No lineup was announced for the 091/19 show. The 01/26 Ciudad Madero show was officially announced.

Vampiro mentioned the possibility of running shows in Argentina, Brazil, Japan, and Europe in addition to Colombia. Last year, AAA mentioned they were going to Colombia, the US, the UK and Japan and only ran one of those. It is good they’re only calling those possibilities.

This press conference also including Vampiro talking about Lucha Underground, which does not air in Mexico and I’m not sure the 4th season was ever released there on Netflix. It only makes sent to talk about Lucha Underground in Mexico if you want to talk about it in terms of AAA being a big international deal, and so that what was happened. Vampiro said they’re currently planning season 5. I would safely say this is 100% accurate. Chris Roach, Chris DeJospeh and others have mentioned texting or meeting up to talk about ideas or wrestlers they’d love to use for the next season in between past seasons. I’m sure they actually have an idea of what they’d like to do for a Season 5, if it happened right now. Vampiro mentions new faces and a new look, which is also probably true. There are always new faces, and the building they used for Season 4 has been condemned. Does any of this mean a season 5 is happening? Not really. AAA’s not really involved in the decision for season 5 to happen, neither are most of the people who put the show together. It is probably helpful to keep people’s attitude positive, but Vampiro saying it will happen does not mean anything.

The last guess we had was there will no decision about a Lucha Underground season 5 before February, and it probably won’t come until months after. I do not expect it to return for a season 5, but no one knows for sure right now one way or the other.

Lucha Underground seasons 1-3 are now available on DVD thru Lucha Underground’s website. There are no details about what’s included, but it looks like a simple deal – just the episodes and no more. No mention of Season 4; maybe the DVDs also have a lengthy no compete clause. LU hasn’t mentioned this yet. I think they’re down to two tweets a week to promote video and then a sale on Friday, so maybe they’ll mention it on Friday.

PlutoTV now includes an AAA channel. It’s the same sort of stream that’s been airing on Twitch, with the same episodes, though it’s not an exact mirror. There’s no way to rewind or watch on demand, it is simply a stream. It does appear to have a schedule, which Twitch does not have, but the schedule on the website doesn’t go that far out. PlutoTV is really designed to be used via app and I haven’t played around with it. AAA hasn’t talked about any of this yet.

Saturday’s AAA/EMW show in Tijuana had advertised the main event of Brian Cage & Psycho Clown versus HIjo del Fantasma & Taurus. They ended up with Psycho Clown vs La Mascara vs Hijo del Fantasma in a three way. Steve Pain also missed the semi-main. The viral La Parkita was recognized at the show.

Gallo Dorado lost his hair and Okuzono lost his mask in a four-way tag match in Ciudad Madero. Okuzono is Pedro Manuel Okzono Ruiz, from Ciudad Madero, 14 years a wrestler. (No age was reported.) Sadico & Disutrbio – the locals using those names, not the Mexico City area ones – got credited with the wins.

SoCalUncensored had Mano Negra but it turned out it wasn’t EMLL/CMLL Mano Negra, but someone else who might have been telling people he was that and his family didn’t know.

CMLL, which never mentions title wins in non-affiliated promotions, has a post about Okumura winning a Costa Rica Embassy championship. This is the small promotion the Costa Ricans who visited in 2018 are from.

MexaWrestling/Lucha Libre Boom/Lucha Memes War of Styles on 01/01 in Arena San Juan

The poster for Flamita & Rey Horuz made it look like each guy was supposed to be representing a promotion, a promotion they don’t really work for. The women’s poster makes it seem like the Mexa Wrestling and Lucha Libre Boom logos are attached to the show name with no extra purpose

Super Crazy and Tarasco were given Hidalgo sports awards. Tarasco is a local luchador who retired after prostate cancer and recovered to become a lucha libre teacher. Super Crazy mentions plans to go to Germany, Japan, Colombia in the US (and he’s more likely to go those places than AAA.)

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania.

+LuchaTV has this week’s podcast.

CMLL is starting a look back at 2018 with January.

There was a lucha libre expo in Chetumal.

An interview with Estrella 2000, was the leader of the union in Toluca.

El Grafico has a column critical of Fantasma for being an active wrestler while head of the Mexico City commission.

Lineups

CMLL (SUN) 12/23/2018 Arena México
1) Fantasy & Shockercito vs Mercurio & Pierrothito
2) Astral, Eléctrico, Halcón Suriano Jr. vs Espíritu Negro, Inquisidor, Sangre Azteca
3) Guerrero Maya Jr., Pegasso, Rey Cometa vs Disturbio, Sagrado, Universo 2000 Jr.
4) Templario vs El Audaz [lightning]
5) Flyer, Soberano Jr., Valiente vs Gran Guerrero, Hechicero, Mephisto
6) Atlantis, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón

Audaz versus Templario is happening on a non-taped show becuase CMLL truly only cares about the people who come to the building. It didn’t take Halcon Suriano long to find a team with Astral & Electrico.

  1. If ROH is booking long term, having the Munoz Brothers winning the Trios Title from the Kingdom seems interesting. Have any of the Misticos ever wrestled there? I know Dragon Lee II got over. Rush may have. I haven’t read any reports about the taping yet, but based on the 2 matches I saw of him in MLW, he probably did.

Now that Bandido is signed to ROH, how likely is it that CMLL will use him? Similar to how they’ve used Fenix, Penta and other non-CMLL talent?

  2. Mistico has not wrestled in Ring of Honor. I’m guessing it’s more likely they’d do a Ingobernables trios title challenge (maybe using some of the Japan members rather than all of the Mexicans) than a Munoz one.
