What happened:

poor Fenix

Rush faked a foul in the first fall of the main event, with help from Edgar being taken out. Referee Edgar got involved in Rush’s favor a couple times during that fall. Commissioner Rambo ejected Edgar from the match and replaced him with Tirantes. Tirantes was knocked down by Rush sending him into LA Park in the second fall. LA Park got a visual pinfall soon after, just as he did in the first fall. La Comandante passed nunchucks to Rush to use. LA Park knocked them loose, grabbed them and flashed them around. Tirantes saw Park with them, and called the disqualification. LA Park again demanded a super libre and a mask versus hair match with Rush. Rush accepted for next week.

Arkangel de la Muerte, who passed away on Wednesday, was remembered between the third and fourth matches of the card. Mephisto dressed up as Arkangel, complete to the black marker goatee, for his match.

The Panther was called “Black Panther” all match and in the preview for next week. It appears to be a permanent name change. (And a little bit confusing one, since his brother was the one called Black Panther before.)

The Titan/Triton/Esfinge trio are trying to change their name (or at least the spelling to One Atos Style) though CMLL hasn’t taken that one up yet.

Thoughts:

One of these seemed a lot safer

The main event was a definite improvement over the last couple of weeks. Rey Fenix being involved helped, though he and Cibernético felt like AAA editions. Not because they were former AAA wrestler, but because they were big guest star names added to a match where they didn’t have an important role, like Laredo Kid and Brian Cage at Verano de Escandalo. Fenix and Cibernetico being matched up was not ideal (and must’ve been weird for both of them), and they still made it work. Like in the past, Cibernético seems willing to sell and go along with whatever spots the técnicos want to try in big CMLL matches. His bumping isn’t great, but I was content getting him taking Fenix’ spinning heel kick. Volador continues to feel like a luxury item in this feud, doing well while doing 20% of what he does when he’s the focus instead. Those supporting players being good added to the overall match, and the referee shenanigans helped create the chaotic feel that needs to be present in the LA Park/Rush feud. LA Park is an abnormal presence in CMLL and it should never feel like any routine CMLL match – the ref bumps and the ejections can’t and shouldn’t be done for everyone but they absolutely work in the context of the out of control rivalry taking place. The stuff done here makes a lot of sense if they’re finally coming back with the super libre match next week. The nunchuck spot is going to be forever remembered.

The lightning match far exceeded my expectations. Dragon Lee is Dragon Lee and is always going to be pretty good. Carístico was surprisingly excellent and the two meshed together wonderfully. Carístico was up Dragon Lee’s bonkers ideas, Dragon Lee playing rudo made the match work out pretty well, and the two were smooth against each other for a match we haven’t seen. Caristico’s walk up the rope Spanish Fly was super impressive; I was concerned he’d come off as a lot less athletic than Dragon Lee and that wasn’t the case. I was also expecting another draw once it started getting alone, so an actual finish was a nice surprise. Go watch this one.

Terrible says no to spins

The fourth match had a hard time picking the crowd back up after the Arkangel moment. The crowd really only reacted to the dives until the last moments. The action wasn’t so great that these guys were cheated out of a reaction. It was a basic Hijo del Infierno match. Hijo de LA Park is very indie, willing to try big moves and not really smooth with them. He was lucky not hurt himself on his diving headscissors, but scooting across the ropes at least made it feel different than the dozen other ones we get a week. I can not believe Mephisto took the pin.

The Tiger/Puma match was the usual good Tiger/Puma match. Felino looked a lot better than usual, maybe trying a little bit more because he was with his sons. They came off as a better unit than usual, so something was working. Titan & Felino mixed well. Puma had really timing. The match seemed a little rough at times, so I wouldn’t put among their best, but it was still good for a Friday night watch.

very unCaristico

The segunda wasn’t as the pace of other Panther matches – these rudos are just not that fast – but it wasn’t as huge a dropoff as it seemed. This was borderline good. The Panthers have their match down and can do it with pretty much anyone. Kawato included! Kawato had a nice dive, I shouldn’t be so mean. There were a lot of stutter steps during the second fall comeback because the timing just wasn’t there. It was still fine. Universo is getting new moves, needed new moves.

Of all the recent OK openers, this was definitely the best one. Shockercito & Stukita looked good, Mercurio’s comedy work, and they didn’t go too long. They even did the only thing rarer than dives in openers: near falls. Mercurio & Pequeño Nitro lived up to a reputation of being halfway decent when they try. There’s probably also a bit of me avoiding minis matches like the plague of late so this felt a bit more fresh.

Titan knows a tricky hold!

Matches:

Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón beat Ephesto, Luciferno, Mephisto for the Mexican National Trios Championship
(16:35 [4:29, 3:19, 8:47], 1/3, good, via VideosOficialesCMLL)

Atlantis, Kráneo, Niebla Roja beat La Bestia Del Ring, Rush, Terrible
(9:43 [5:39, 4:04], 1/2 DQ, ok, via VideosOficialesCMLL)

Gran Guerrero, Titán, Último Guerrero beat Flyer, Soberano Jr., Volador Jr. in a relevos increíbles match
(11:13 [4:31, 1:41, 5:01], 1/3, ok, via VideosOficialesCMLL)

What happened:

work in progress

Titan worked as a rudo in the main event, though he won cleanly. Soberano asked for a rematch.

Rush removed Kraneo’s mask in the second fall for the DQ to lose in straight falls. Rush then insulted the fans and fat people for a couple of minutes. Kraneo challenged him to a singles match.

NGD retained the trios championship in a match pushed back a week.

Thoughts:

Soberano & Titan meshed very well in the main event. Titan had rudo moments and cut a rudo promo post-match, but still worked his in enough of his usual offense. It felt more like a big tournament final than Titan having to betray his usual nature to make the match work. The eventual singles match is going to be must-see. The other four guys really faded into the background and it didn’t feel like there was a lot more than that feud, but they got me excited for that feud.

I feel like Tirantes probably should’ve stopped the match

The semimain was standard feud build up stuff, with the rudos taking most of the match. The latest Ingobernables jerseys are unpleasantly gaudy, and will probably sell pretty well. Rush laying on Kraneo while starting his promo was the best move of the match. It was a simple night for the non-Kraneo técnicos.

The NGD/Infierno match was a big improvement from the match that set up this one. There was a bit more effort from both teams and faster pace at times, though it tended into trios cliché spots instead of something interesting. The reason to watch this match is more just to see how over the NGD are as a técnicos for the night. The crowd goes insane when they make their third fall técnico and are strongly behind them all night long, something that doesn’t always happen in these rudo/rudo matches. The NGD’s strengths are not as técnicos right now, though they do show some unusual things for them in the first fall, they definitely have grown a fanbase with their success.

The second match felt like a tercera and was overall alright. Okumura got the 450 knees to the midsection in the first fall, thanks to a combination of Maya position and Triton landing. He lived, to watch as Triton slipped on a multiple springboard spot in the second fall. It finally went right for Triton in the third fall with Universo 2000 Jr., which led me to believe he might now be the best rudo of these three. Kawato’s attempt at doing the cartwheel out of a headscissors was as charming as it was awful.

The opener had more of the main roster group than usual. They were better off with Star Jr. & Disturbio and the match had more to it as a result. Samuray looked good and worked as well with Signo as anyone does. The end wasn’t great; Star Jr. needed to find something to do instead of standing in place for five seconds after Disturbio hit the ropes and dived into him, and Signo looked silly pinning Arkalis while holding one of his shoulders off the mat so he couldn’t touch the ropes.

Triton

Fenix, Volador and LA Park versus Rush, Cibernetico and Terrible tonight, Atlantis & friends in ROH

If you hadn’t paid attention to Arena Mexico, today’s main event would look bizarre to you. LA Park teaming with Rey Fenix & Volador Jr. versus Cibernetico, Rush and Terrible looks like something you’d find deep in a YouTube comment thread about weird dream matches. I’m not sure it’s going to be a good match. Cibernetico & Terrible aren’t the most ideal opponents for Fenix & Volador, but it’s a lot of star power to create a different feel for the fourth week of this feud. The attendance keeps going up each day they run it, so maybe CMLL isn’t in a big hurry to get to the singles match, but I wouldn’t mind something more.

This is Cibernetico’s latest return to CMLL. On Informa, he mentioned he was previously coming to CMLL via ELITE and now is directly deal with CMLL. That seem to be said to make it clear Ciber isn’t planned to be part of whatever AAA is cooking up with ELITE. It’s still unclear how he’ll fit in CMLL; he showed more in his CMLL matches than he has elsehwere, but his style doesn’t match up with what CMLL has done in the past. Cibernetico would make more sense as a Rush opponent than partner, and Rush has shot down ideas that Cibernetico might be added to Los Ingobernables.

The lightning match is take two of the Caristico/Dragon Lee lightning match. It was in their match two months ago where Dragon Lee’s right leg went while running. That seemed to be a major ligament injury in the moment. Dragon Lee later said it was instead a muscle tear, and recovered in time to have a strong performance in NJPW’s Best of the Super Juniors. He returned to Arena Mexico this past Sunday, and this will be his first televised match. this remains an interesting combination of the biggest star CMLL had last decade with the man who may become the biggest star they have next decade (or may become a big star elsewhere.)

There is a possibility Penta disrupts this match. These are the exact two guys he’s had run-ins with over the last couple weeks. It would be completely unlike CMLL for someone to run-in on a match at all, much less someone who hasn’t appear for the company so far. It’s only a possibility because these are currently strange times, and you should not go into the match expecting it.

Hijo de LA Park, Niebla Roja and Valiente take on Ephesto, Luicferno and Mephsito in the fourth match. Puma & Tiger take their act to the third match, teaming with papa Felino against Guanatos Style (Titan, Esfinge, Triton) in what should be a good undercard match. The Panthers team with Pegasso against Kawato, Okumura and Universo. Shockercito & Stukita wrestle Mercurio & Pequeno Nitro in the opener.

Lucha Central also previews the show. CMLL will air it at 8:30 at Marca and Facebook, though neither of the links seem to be accessible right now. I’ll stream it on YouTube if I have to. It’ll be on CMLL’s YouTube later.

Atlantis, Stuka and Guerrero Maya will be in San Antonio tonight wrestling for Ring of Honor. They take on the SoCalUncensored team of Christopher Daniels, Scorpio Sky, Frankie Kazarian. That show should stream live on ROH’s Honor Club service starting at 7:30 (one hour before CMLL.)

Martinez Promotions is also running tonight in Fort Worth, with Mecha Wolf vs Drago vs Ultimo Ninja vs Laredo Kid as the main event. There’s also a Faby Apache vs Lacey Lane, which is the AAA women’s champion against The Crash’s women champion. The prohibition on AAA & The Crash people working on the same show has obviously been dropped.

Adam Brooks is off tomorrow’s The Crash show, saying he can’t travel or wrestle due to an injury.

Segunda Caida writes about more Arkangel matches.

+LuchaTV has a new edition of Aqui La Lucha.

5th defense

Atlantis hasn’t had a streamed defense of this since 2015. I think we might be ok if this wasn’t streamed either.

This show feels low on the rudo side when Espanto Jr. is working the third match and Kawato is working the fourth.

great match roundup, week of 2018-06-02

dives

shows watched

The first three matches on this list are from AAA. Things have changed a lot. The only shows on the upper part of this chart from AAA/Twitch and CMLL/Friday. That’s not much of a change this year. The next week isn’t much better; I’m still paying attention to the Monday/Tuesday shows but it’s hard to imagine why most people are still watching them.

the MOTYC list has been updated again.

lucha TV preview for weekend of June 15th, 2018

full size

The Lucha Underground episode guide reads: “Catrina hopes to restore her life and searches for the Gauntlet of the Gods; the Trios Champions defend their titles against three new fighters; one of the Seven Ancient Aztec Medallions comes back into play.” The Pentagon/Matanza match was set up at the end of this week’s show.

CMLL Marca should continue to be interesting with Rey Fenix & Cibernetico joining the LA Park/Rush matches and Caristico versus Dragon Lee on the undercard.

The Latigo/Toxin vs Aramis/Astrolux AAA match will make YouTube this week and is worth going out of your way to see if you have not already.

What happened:

Rey Bucanero feuded with Atlantis in the main event, sneaking in a foul on him. That was it.

Thoughts:

a bad move

Titan looked spectacular in the main event. Atlantis did a lot of waving people into running into each other. Bucanero & Atlantis mentally can do their feud but physically it’s not too pretty. Euforia & Gran Guerrero had one really good tag move with Angel de Oro (the press slam) and one not so good (where they smacked his head into the top rope.)

This was a Tuesday card with a lot of tourists into the show. Those tourists were into rooting for Blue Panther the elder fighting against the rudos, so they gave them a lot of that. It didn’t turn into a lot more than a basic match, and it worked for the live crowd. The Panther’s 619 finish looks good when the opponent is in the right position, but there’s little margin of error on that positioning. Blue Panther Jr. is trending towards Gronda sized muscles.

The Drone/Esfinge match was the most exciting match to that point but didn’t feel like a complete match. The dives were all over the place in this one. Drone’s sliding splash was misaimed. Esfinge’s tope con giro landed on Drone’s neck and back. Drone’s corner tope ran out of stream before connecting with the target. The ending of Drone hitting his headstand kneesmash and Esfinge essentially just getting up and beating Drone two moves later didn’t make a lot of sense either.

Are there compelling reasons to watch CMLL women’s trios matches now? Part of the reason I watch any match is to find out if they’re any good to pass that knowledge. I can’t figure a CMLL women’s trios I’m likely to enjoy with Zeuxis & Maravilla gone. There’s always the chance for lightning to strike, but the depth isn’t there. There isn’t six women CMLL could put together that would sure fire be a good match in 2018. There’s even only a few possible singles matches that I’d figure on being good. Most of those involve Dalys, who will get the best reception for her matches but they tend to do nothing for me.

Angel airborne

These matches are still worth watching to me at the moment to get a read on people. Mystique, La Guerrera, and Maligna haven’t had strong performances yet but they also haven’t had many performances. (Maligna seemed slightly better this time. Maybe Jarochita & Isis have improved since they were last around. (That didn’t seem to be true here.) That’s me wanting to know everything, which isn’t as really applicable to most anyone else. And even my time is limited. My time isn’t rewarded by watching these matches, so there’s going to be lots of skipping to come. This is one you can easily skip too.

The second match was very ordinary. Magnus & Starman doing tag moves in the second fall while Leono hung in the corner until it was time to get the pin was a bit odd. It’d help if Yago & Magnus had good chemistry, since they both seem to be good wrestlers who are stuck in this low position for the moment. They were just alright here.
