What happened:

The main was a quick build-up to next week’s title match. It was split pretty evenly between getting Titan over as a rudo in this feud and showing what they could do in a singles match. Hopefully, they get a lot more time next week. Flyer continues to get the status boost from being in the top two matches without actually doing all that much in them.

Titan continues to wrestle as a rudo, going as far as ripping off Soberano’s mask in the second fall. (Tirantes belatedly distracts himself with the Guerreros as to not call a DQ.) Titan challenged for a title match after submitting Soberano in the second fall.

Rush had his match seemingly won with a dropkick to the corner on Kraneo. Referee Pompin held up at two despite Kraneo not kicking out at all. Pompin restarted his count and got to two again, but Rush yanked Pompin by the shirt, angry about the count. Pompin explained something to Rush, shoved Rush from his knees, and crawled over to raise Kraneo’s arm to give him a win. Rush dropkicked Pompin – who never takes physical contact – then grabbed a beer from outside he ring and threw it to him. Kraneo half sold and half checked on Pompin, as did medics. Pompin seemed to tell him he was ok, but they still put him on the stretcher to sell the attack.

Amapola rather flagrantly used the ropes to beat Princesa Sugehit. Sugehit demanded a rematch.

Arkangel was honored in between the third and fourth matches.

Thoughts:

The original Rush/Kraneo benefited from the crowd really into the concept. It was just a match here, and the minimal action itself wasn’t enough to carry it. The finish was classic CMLL, unclear if it was an ending completely and embarrassingly falling apart or a weird way to protect both men from having to go to a decision. It was far more interesting than the match.

I’m not sure why I watched the fourth match. It wasn’t going to be any good when Okumura is the best guy on his side. Kawato and Stigma didn’t seem to be a good matchup but nothing was a good matchup. Esfinge and Mascara 2000 doing shoulderblock spots was some unconvincing wrestling. This match had plenty of dropkicks that didn’t seem to connect right if that’s your thing.

I wanted to like the minis/locals match. Some parts were really good. I wish Stukita had one of the fifty singles titles in this promotion so we could see him in a singles match with Pequeño Nitro after their short time together. Asturiano & Astro got to do dives and that was nice. It was just still boring in large stretches and the work wasn’t always solid. Astro’s handspring flop wasn’t great. Stukita landing on Nitro’s knees and just popping back up because they needed him for the next bit looked silly. Maybe if they got rid of the Sauron’s and Acero’s, it would allow the better wrestlers to do more to make up for it.

Happenings

No one’s gone in and out of an Aztec Warfare as champion. No one’s beaten Matanza in a singles match. Pentagon Dark has done both in back to back weeks. Matanza remains a force but maybe a more beatable opponent with Dario around. Antonio Cueto only got involved after the match was over, seemingly preventing Pentagon from getting his arm broken by bringing in the key. Antonio was very upset by Matanza’s performance, saying Dario had spoiled Matanza and made him weak.

In one of the lingering questions from last week, King Cuerno does NOT have the Gauntlet of the Gods. Catrina found this out the hard way, sneaking in Cuerno’s lair only to discover the gauntlet glass case empty. Cuerno revealed he knows how strong the gauntlet is – “it could strike down the descendants of the 7 Aztec tribes” – so he’s keeping it safe and out of reach. Cuerno gave it to someone else – “I don’t where or when he hid it” – which sure points the finger at a time traveling Aerostar.

Catrina wasn’t pleased. She wants the gauntlet to get her full life back. Apparently, she has multiple ways of achieving that: she proposes a Grave Consequences match with Mil Muertes and Fenix. This plan involves Catrina getting Fenix’s life force when he’s put in the casket. I’m not sure how that worked, and Antonio was surprised to find out Catrina really was a ghost but decided it was violent enough to go with. Antonio was also surprised to later find Jeremiah Crane demanding to be added to the match. Crane explained he really wanted to impress Catrina, because Catrina is really hot. Antonio bought that as reasoning an added him. That match will take place next week.

This week, the matches included Famous B getting his guys a trios title match. His guys are not Wagner and Texano; they’re written off as working for him in Mexico. Famous B’s new trio is Big Bad Steve (a mechanic who also happens to be Steve Pain, no longer masked as Pindar), Sammy Guevera and Savage Jack Strong. Jake Strong is ex-WWE’s Jack Swagger, which they carefully point out. He’s a cut above the rest of his teammates, and has the titles won with an ankelock on Killshot. Unfortunately, the referee is busy arguing with Famous B (who had been trying to help but lingered on the apron too long.) The trios champions really to beat Steve. Strong savagely attacks his teammates and his now ex-manager, breaking Famous B’s ankle.

The middle match on the show saw Antonio Cueto returning the seven Aztec Medallions back to play. As with Dario, the seven holders of the Medallions will battle for the Gift of the Gods championship, and that gives the winner a shot at the Lucha Underground Championship when they want it. Dragon Azteca pulled a slight upset over the Kobra Moon controlled Drago for this Medallion. Kobra Moon was upset with Drago over the loss. She was probably more upset after Taya attacked him from behind, thanks to a distraction from Johnny Mundo. They’re still upset about Vibora and Kobra costing Mundo Aztec Warfare last week.

In a statement seemingly for only existing for the most obsessed, Striker goes out of his way to say Dragon Azteca Jr. is part of the Eagle tribe. I need to go mark that one down.

Thoughts

This was a better episode than the last week. The match quality was a lot better than the first half of the Aztec Warfare even without having a standout match. Aztec Warfare wasn’t great for starting new feuds; the limited time means you had to know what was happening already or you’d get lost. Issues got more time to breathe this episode and came off stronger for them.

“Strong” is a good word because that’s how they put over the former Jack Swagger. He nearly won the trios titles single handily and destroyed his partner. That match gave me the same vibe as the first couple episodes of the first season – same visa issues, same people being thrown in odd places just because they needed to find a way to make it work with some people MIA. It didn’t feel like Strong was ever meant to be a Famous B guy, because Strong was immediately established as a top contender for the top title and that’s not where Famous B normally dwells. Sammy Guevera fits the expected Lucha Underground style better and did well even though he was slotted in the midcard. Big Bad Steve also existed. The makeshift nature of the trios champions was way downplayed, probably because getting over the new guys was the priority, but the match flowed pretty well.

Drago/Dragon Azteca seemed intended to be a proper lucha libre match on a show that hasn’t had many of them (and might not have any soon.) They pulled out a lot of flashy moves and kept up a good pace. I thought they meshed pretty well, though Drago could’ve used showing a bit more of a rudo side. I’m not sure who I’m supposed to be rooting for in this Taya/Johnny vs Drago/Kobra feud, though team Worldwide Underground has the cooler jackets.

Pentagon’s match kind of showed how much had changed since he won the title two years ago – it was less of an adventurous match and more his indie showcase bit for a long way. It got more competitive in the last third, and Matanza suplexes were pretty cool. Still, this didn’t feel like an epic rematch of an Ultima Lucha main event as much of the challenge of the week. They tried to explain it by Matanza powering up once Antonio showed up with the key, but the character felt less scary than in years past. Penta feels completely different, having beat nine people in two weeks. I guess the answer to “how do you book Penta?” is you have him just beat everyone. Crowd seemed to like it and it’s a pretty decent idea.

Atlantis & Bucanero tried their best to make it not a bad match and so it wasn’t a bad match. I’m not sure it was a good match by any measure except for the low expectations we had fo rit, but probably it was good enough for CMLL to keep justifying doing more Atlantis singles matches.

Post-match promos: Titan (hyping his Soberano match and his recent rudo antics), Oneatos Style (Esfinge & Triton want to make sure Titan is still with them), Soberano (ready for Titan), and Atlantis. There’s also media interviews with Rey Bucanero (felt he should’ve cheated more) and Atlantis. Because CMLL can’t just do tecnico/tecnico feuds, they’re playing up heavy the idea that Titan’s rudo antics against Soberano could be the prelude to a permanent change of sides.

Doesn’t seem like there’s any new feuds. Warrior Steel is rarely seen. He’s a rookie by CMLL standards but it seems like they think he’s too large to wrestle in openers, so there’s not a spot for him. It could’ve been that match spot was intended to be Arkangel at one point.

Dragon Lee declared war on Caristico. He’s also declared war on Hiromu Takahashi, Penta el 0M, El Desperado and SHO. He may actually wrestle some of those people.

Daniel Aceves posted photos of him at CMLL’s offices yesterday. He mentioned a new project coming up. He’s usually part of the Copa Bobby Bonales, which honors his father.

If you were paying super close attention during the trailer, you can figure out how who’s getting the trios title shot. Famous B & Brenda appear to be involved. Dragon Azteca and Drago are both teased as appearing, which makes that the likely Aztec Medallion match. Catrina is also busy looking for the gauntlet, which pairs nicely with the really good King Cuerno promo late last week.

July 4th, US Independence Day, is a Wednesday this year. That’s pretty terrible from a holiday perspective, what are you doing with a day off in the middle of the week. It’s also not so great from a TV perspective, since it’s usually one of the least watched days of the year. I don’t know if LU will air a new episode that week. Hope they don’t.

At the San Diego ceremony honoring Rey Mysterio, he said he had an offer of a 3 year deal from WWE. Three years seems like the standard WWE term, and Mysterio hinted before that he wanted some non-standard parts about how many dates he’d be working, so that might not end deal. It does seem more likely than not that he’ll be back in WWE eventually.

AAA held a Q&A on Facebook. Most of the questions were “when are you coming back to [X]?”. The answer is soon. Of note,

The Poker de Ases match is no longer a cage match because the wrestlers asked for that change. They’re the true heroes.
- Konnan will address his status in a video soon. A fan asked if they’d have a Vampiro/Konnan “winner is booker, loser retires for reals” match and they thought it was a good idea. I don’t think that means it’s actually happening.
Someone asked if Faby would actually get her head shaved this time if she lost the hair match and AAA said yes. I don’t think that’s going to be an issue.
The Zona Ruda show quietly disappeared from being posted on YouTube and AAA says it’ll only be on TDN for the time being. Perhaps it has something to do with the TV situation.
Guadalajara was said not be getting a TV taping until next year. They haven’t taped TV in Guadalajara since that disastrous Rey de Reyes show (though they are still running a match at a theme park every weekend.)

Rush says LA Park is not going to lose his mask at TripleMania.

What happened:

This was a special Father’s Day show, announcing as airing just an hour before it took place.

Cien Caras came in the ring and tried to help his sons in the third fall (though oddly while they were pinning the Munoz boys). Bestia pulled out Tirantes to break up that count, and his sons won cleanly soon after

The lucha libre commissioner stopped the first fall to demand Blue Panther & Felino unmask, until Felino convinced him they had permission. Felino unmasked after winning the first fall. Panther immediately pinned Felino to start the second, but the count was delayed because Tirantes didn’t seem clear it was supposed to be a finish. Panther unmasked between falls and brawled with Felino into the crowd. Panther did the multiple tope spot in the third fall, but was cut off from a third tope by Tirantes blocking his path. That allowed Felino to get in, where he was quickly submitted.

Sugehit challenged Dalys for a title match after their win.

Guapito was the referee for the micro match.

Thoughts:

The main event fit the special occasion show, feeling like a simple all-star exhibition match until the last couple of minutes. It was solidly worked without having a lot to it until the finish kicked it. It didn’t quite reflect with the crowd wanted to see – Rush and Mistico worked tecnico while being solidly booed – but they kept with their normal match either way. Cien Caras looked like he was hurting just getting to the ring, so the best part of this match was not having him wrestle in it. I’m not sure what was supposed to happen at the finish but I also didn’t put a lot of thought into figuring it out.

The semi-main was the sort of main event trios match after a big singles match, though it wasn’t really following a big singles match. Maybe it was just quicker because the show was going long, but they managed to fit in a lot of impressive Guerrero offense in the short time. Volador looked good in his run, and this was enjoyable while it lasted.

it’s fun playing rudo until you get wiped out

I don’t know what happened with Blue Panther/Felino but it was all sort of a mess. Stopping the first fall to argue about the masks was weird. The second fall lasting only as long as they did because Tirantes couldn’t believe that was actually the finish was weird. Tirantes cutting off Panther from this third dive only for Felino to come in the ring and lose five seconds later was weird. The brawl into the crowd got the crowd back into it, as did the dives, but this wasn’t really all that much. Hechicero really seemed to love the match but it was just odd to me. The idea probably was to honor two of the more famous current CMLL fathers with a singles match but the confusion didn’t really do it.

The women’s cibernetico was in that range of matches which are good though I’m not sure I’d ever need to watch again. It was probably too long – they went 13 minutes before anyone it was easily a couple steps up for the usual CMLL’s matches, with more pace and better offense because of the elimination rules. It felt like they put in more work planning this out than usual trios matches too. Women like Estrellita had better nights than usual, and the crowd bought into the importance of the match. Maligna looked more confident and aggressive in the time she was in. Mystique can do some big spots but iffy on simpler moves and needs a good ruda to work with. Isis having a big run was nice for the occasion; I also just want someone new in the top mix. I guess they could not given when they were going with the result. Sugehit/Dalys is among the best possible CMLL women’s matches they could go and this was a good setup to get there.

these two might have really good matches around 2025

The micros match was not bad, but they’d done much better than that. There were more obvious mix-ups on spots and less exciting big moves than usual. I thought the actual finish had to be a near fall when it happened, because there wasn’t a lot of big Micro Man spots in this match. It was just it. He didn’t mesh as well with Zacarias this time. Micro Angel got better near the end, but he had moments where he didn’t look ready for Arena Mexico. It’s nice to see the Micros again but this wasn’t a must-see match.

The opener was noticeably better than usual openers, so much so that I’m probably overrating it because it was nice not just have the 20 minutes of a CMLL show being a waste. Coyote looked solid throughout and the announcers went crazy for his northern lights suplex at the end. Astral & Eléctrico have figured out how to do spectacular looking spots within the opening match restrictions and pulled them off well. The rudos could’ve done a bit more but otherwise, this was a good show.

Straight falls, setting up a Titan/Soberano match.

Soberano/Titan should be pretty good.

They didn’t set up anything in the second match after all; it looks like they’re running Amapola/Sugehit instead. CMLL had run 1 title match (Dalys/Kobayashi) the entire year and now is doing two of them and a cibernetico. I’d think this would be a reaction to something if CMLL booking showed that kind of awareness.

CMLL attempts an Atlantis/Rey Bucanero title match tonight. Bucanero has had few singles matches in rare years, usually trying very hard but looking like a man near the end of his career. He is the better of the two wrestlers coming into this match. CMLL booking this match seems to mean they’re in denial about where Atlantis is physically at this point, or we’re in for a big surprise. I’d take an OK match.

The semi-main has Dragon Lee, Soberano, and Stuka against Ephesto, Mephsito and Shocker in a match that’ll be just as good as the rudos allow it to be. Esfinge, Titan, and Triton face Kawato, Okumura, and Templario. Astral, Electrico and Star Jr. face Disturbio, Espanto Jr., and Virus in the tercera, and there’s two forgettable opening matches.

Lucha Central has a preview of the show, which will air at 7:30pm on CMLL’s YouTube channel.

Daga told R de Rudo that there’s a good chance he’ll wrestle in CMLL. There hasn’t been as much talk about Daga as Fenix & Penta, and he’d probably not mean as much, but there are obvious matches they can do with him.

Tickets are on sale for AAA’s on 07/21 taping in Mexico City. Of note, the show is listed as “Lucha Libre: AAA vs ELITE”. AAA has not explained or acknowledged what their relationship is with ELITE and probably should if they’re running shows using their name. No guarantee they will. Tickets run from 150 to 800 pesos before fees.

A lineup for the AAA Queretaro show was supposed to be announced Monday but has yet to appear.

Rayo de Jalisco Jr. says his son is two years away from debuting. Two years can be an infinite amount of time in lucha libre.

Electrico is studying for a PHD.

Penta’s match in GALLI this Sunday is a four way with locals Gringo Loco, Bandolero and France’s Senza Volto. I know nothing about Volto but he has a good asmk.
