CMLL’s April press conference took place this afternoon. The only big surprise was CMLL announcing the Anniversary date. The rest of the show were expected tournament and apuesta matches.
CMLL’s 85th Anniversary show will take place on September 14th. This is the earliest they’ve announced the date. I think they’ve figured out that people will plan trips just to see the show and are adjusting accordingly. There’s no match certain to headline the show at this point, which CMLL instead hinting a lot of ideas.
CMLL did specify what will be the big match on the 04/27 (the building) Arena Mexico Anniversary show: Princesa Sugehit versus La Seductora in a hair versus hair match. This was obviously coming from their recent run-ins on Friday nights. It’s not a particularly compelling match: Seductora’s sole other apuesta match was losing her mask in a tag team match and her matches are rarely good. Sugehit is the heavy favorite, but I’m not sure if it would even mean much if she lost. No other matches were announced for that show. Tickets are already on sale, and are not much higher than normal. Ringside for that show is 616 MXN, while it’s 508 MXN for the normal show this week.
The Gran Alternativa will take place in May. The usual 16 team tournament three week tournament starts on May 4th and finishes on May 18th. Block A teams were announced.
- Angel de Oro & Robin (2nd time, first in 2013)
- Volador Jr. & Flyer (3rd, 2016 & 2017)
- Hechicero & Espanto Jr. (4th, 2013, 2014 & 2017)
- Terrible & Hijo del Signo (3rd, 2011, 2012)
- Atlantis & Magia Blanca (2nd, 2016)
- Mistico & Electrico (1st)
- Mephisto & Yago (2nd, 2016)
- Ephesto & Maquiavelo (1st)
That’s a weak field of rookies. Flyer & Magia Blanca just did well so they should do well again. Electrico is a champion, though they’ve forgotten it. Someone else (Yago? Robin?) is going to make the second round just because there’s not much.
The Block B field was not announced. It should include both Audaz & Templario, but they weren’t in Nuevo Valores.
CMLL will run three shows for Kid’s Day: Saturday 04/28 in Arena Coliseo, 04/29 in Arena Mexico and 04/30 in Arena Puebla. They’ve mentioned doing something in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara previously. No matches were announced for any of these. There’s usually ticket deals for children on those shows, but I haven’t seen those announced yet.
Magia Blanca will face Soberano for the national welterweight championship on May 1st. This is his prize for winning the Torneo Nuevo Valores tournament last night. That show will be at the holiday 5pm start time; Mexico celebrates Labor Day on May 1st.
The middle of the show was taken up by an interview with Kraneo, repeating the same talking points from previous interviews: he’s a tecnico now, he’s not replacing Super Porky and hopes team with him soon, and he’d like to form a trio.
