CMLL’s show today is the incredible pairs final. I wrote a lot about it last week, and nothing too important has changed after the one week delay: if Rush & Terrible win, it means this tournament had a point and we might see a new combination of Los Ingobernables. If Volador & Ultimo Guerrero win, it doesn’t really mean all that much.
It’s still the same good looking card as it was last week, with a couple of minor changes. Mistico is off this show because he was previously booked In Tijuana and Mexicali this weekend. That means Atlantis now teams with Angel de Oro & Dragon Lee against NGD. Caristico is probably booked somewhere too, because he’s off the show. Diamante Azul now teams with Marco & Stuka against Euforia, Gran Guerrero and Kraneo. Niebla Roja & Soberano is a promising lightning match, the second match gives us Kawato with Tiger & Puma, and Stukita makes an appearance in the opener. CultIcon goes into a lot more detail of the show.
The show normally air at 8:30pm on both Claro’s website & Facebook. Except, both Claro & the Facebook site are restricted to only Mexico access at the moment. If that’s still the case at show time, I’ll just stream it on YouTube. CMLL will put up their own YouTube version of the show after the fact.
CMLL announced the first four of sixteen teams in it’s CMLL Tag Team Tournament.
- Atlantis & Soberano Jr.
- Mistico & Dragon Lee
- Caristico & Volador Jr.
- Rush & Pierroth
12 to go. No mention of which blocks these are in. CMLL probably will announce the rest of the first block during the show tonight. Rush & Pierroth as the Los Ingobernables team seems to hint at tonight’s result.
Drone is still not booked on CMLL shows and there’s no indication when he’ll be back. It’s no certainty he will be back in CMLL. Drone has been announced in the main event of WMC’s 03/11 show, so he’s finding work elsewhere for the time being.
Lucha Underground
Lucha Underground tapes a new episode tonight for the first time in 606 days. They’re taping tonight, Saturday and Sunday, and are expected to tape about two episodes per night.
I’m going to treat Lucha Underground spoilers generally like I have the last two seasons: I won’t post full results on the database until they air. I will mention wrestlers coming in and out of, as best as can be figured from those same spoilers, as that will may have some affect on ongoing things in AAA and elsewhere.
In that vein, it’s a good time to mention again that five wrestlers are scheduled to debut this weekend. I don’t know all the names, but my understanding is there’s a prominent US indie name among them. I do anticipate people will end up leaving after this season because of their frustration with how the LU brand has been managed, but LU still appears to be capable of bringing in new people at around the same talent level as before.
The overall talent budget per episode is going down, if only because Rey Misterio does not appear to be coming back for this season. At the same time, there is no freeze on talent, or a lot of people being dropped from the show. There probably will be more people wrestling for the show than ever. My concern going in is the opposite way, that LU is going to have a lot of talent and maybe not enough time to give everyone a chances to show it with a reduced amount of episodes.
On Instagram, Catrina has been spotted at the Temple. She gave an interview to ESPN late last year where she refereed to Lucha Underground in the past tense quite a bit, seemingly like she was done with the show. I believe one of the affects of the new episode count and set up is we’re going to see more people coming in to LU for short weekend long runs, not the full season, and it’s possible they might have talked Catrina into coming back for a few days to finish out her character.
It appears Sexy Star is not coming back for Lucha Underground Season 4. Dulce Garcia is in Saltillo, Coahuila today for a boxing press conference. There’s no more info than that so far, the press conference does not appear to have happened yet. Her husband wasn’t tagged, so this is probably about a bout she’s lined up soon, and and she’s not going to be wrestling anywhere while she’s prepping for it.
Brad Shepard hints that ex-TNA wrestler Jessie Godderz will be at Lucha Underground. Godderz is also a Big Brother alumni, and there’s some cross pollination between those two shows: snake man Vibora is also a former star of that CBS reality show. All the new people are trying to keep it quiet but it probably won’t be much longer.
Vampiro was urgently trying to get ahold of Juventud Guerrera. I believe, in our hears, we are all urgently trying to get a hold of Juventud Guerrera. I’m not sure which section things belongs in.
Lucha Underground tickets for this weekend were briefly available last night. They’re gone now. I suspect the new system to distribute tickets makes it easier for Lucha Underground to redistribute tickets if there are cancellations. I think everyone will have a lot more information about how well this all works after the first weekend, and that’s why the second weekend tickets have not gone up yet. Still, if you’re in the area and want to go, it couldn’t hurt to periodically check in to see if there’s suddenly some other tickets open.
AAA
The Apizaco fair is expected to draw 70,000 people over about 10 days. Most of the events will be free. The article mentions AAA’s TV taping soon after, so I believe it might be one of those free events, it’s just not said. (AAA hasn’t been pushing a ticket website for this show.) It should be a good crowd; the first few matches on the Aguascalientes show were definitely hurt all the empty seats.
Texano says his match with Fantasma is a gaint match for his career. He’s correct.
There’s show in Puebla on Saturday, advertised as six wrestlers getting an opportunity to wrestle in the opener on Rey de Reyes, and those having a chance to make it into AAA. The names on the card include ex-DTU Nerd Tony Iron.
Add Chilpancingo to the list of locations getting an AAA TV taping. No date is announced. That location traditionally has gotten a December taping, though they’ve run there in late April/early May in recent years.
El Fantasma was on Zona Ruda. I probably should actually watch that one to see the head of lucha libre commission participating in AAA angles.

A long time ago (2011), the new characters of Titan and Triton were introduced with Diamante Azul as their third partner, as a unit Shocker was putting together to feud with Atlantis. They never actually teamed together and have only done so twice since.

6) Carístico, Dragón Lee, Volador Jr. vs El Bandido, Hechicero, Xtreme Tiger
This is a Lucha Libre Boom versus Lucha Memes. I think, if you squint, you can figure out who’s supposed to be representing each promotion. To me, it still feels like every promotion books about the same guys so I’m finding it hard to care about the feud. There’s still good matches here, with the top two looking fun. Hope Volador just betrays Caristico again, it’s the one CMLL feud I believe in.
