Lucha Underground 3×39: Ultima Lucha Tres – Part III

Drago didn’t get a lot in this match, but looked cool when he did

Matches

Sexy Star beat Taya in a last luchadora standing match (9:15, good)

The Mack, Killshot and Dante Fox beat Drago, Vibora and Pindar for the Lucha Underground Trios Championship (7:59, good, Killstomp on Pindar)

Pentagon Dark beat Son of Havoc in a ladder match for the Gift of the Gods (13:58, good)

Developments

Killshot and Dante

Última Lucha is overstuffed with matches, leaving almost no time for vignettes. That was the case again this week, with the only out of the ring bit being a short but important tease at the end of the night.

The show opened with the conclusion of the Sexy Star and Taya last luchadora standing match. It was a brawl, mostly outside of the ring. Taya bled, but still seemed in control most of the match. Sexy Star eventually threw herself and Taya thru two tables, and only Sexy Star was able to get up at the count of nine to win.

The unlikely trio of Mack, Killshot and Dante Fox are the new Lucha Underground Trios champions. Dante didn’t get along with either of his partners early on, but both he and Killshot put aside their differences as they got closer to a win. The opposite happened to the Reptile Tribe, with Pindar not following Kobra Moon’s orders. Pindar was the one swarmed and beaten to cause the title change.

Pentagon defeated Son of Havoc in their ladder match to win the Gift of the Gods title. It appeared as though Pentagon was passing up his best chances at winning by setting up more ways to harm Son of Havoc. Pentagon still managed to knock Havoc to his doom and grab his belt. Striker went out of his way to note early on that the Gift of the Gods winner has to give proper notice to Dario so he can promote the title match. That seemed directed at those who expected Havoc or (now just) Pentagon to get involved in the Puma/Mundo match.

That match was the subject of that match. Prince Puma sat in Vampiro’s dojo as Vampiro urged him to defeat Mundo next week, saving Puma’s career and winning the championship. Puma agreed and left. A mystery voice congratulated Vampiro on a job well done, confirming Vampiro had been manipulating Puma all along to some end. It’s not clear why, but Vampiro refereed to the voice as his “master”.

Thoughts

this is fun, and the only GIF I didn’t make giant by accident

Editing is a big part of Lucha Underground’s story, and a big pat of this episode. All the matches on this episode felt different live then on TV.

The main event sticks out the most. It was not a good match live. It was OK, but it was a lot of ladder construction spots that slowed the action, and no less than three different times where they redid a spot because they knew it could fixed later. They did fix that part (though even here, there’s still a lot of time spent setting up the props.) The big bumps cover up the lack of any real close calls to getting the belt; I wanted more of a competitive match and this turned into a stunt show. They salvaged it well.

They might have hurt the other two, though. Or maybe it’s the clock that hurt the Taya/Sexy Star match. In June 2016, I was not at all interested in this match. When they came out, I saw this a wonderful break, my chance to take a break from standing and craning my head around to see the action. It was around the time where they went flying into chairs where I finally gave up and realized I had to watch these two women killing each other. It felt like the did for a lot longer live than made TV, probably because there are only about 44 minutes in the day, but the episode did capture the intensity which made it memorable. Sexy Star winning was a notable source of controversy on that day, but it came across here as another match where Taya got over with a strong performance in a loss.

fun time with tables

The amped up sound effects is one of the trademarks of this show, but the one match where it felt like maybe the audio wasn’t cranked up enough was the trios title match. The people in that Temple wanted Dante and Killshot to win so bad after the Hell of War, and reacted huge when they did. Maybe it just felt louder in the building, but it came off as a big genuine moment when they won. They at least left them enough time to hold their belts together, and the match itself was better then I recalled. Vibora (the tall one) seemed to get improve just went it was a little too late too matter.

Striker going out of his way to blame Pindar for losing the match seems random, but it matches up with the equally random bit of Matt Riddle saying Steve Pain had been fired from Lucha Underground way back last December. I guess we see if Pindar makes it thru next week intact, or if there’s a guy with a sword coming for him.

The opener was politically interesting too. At that point it happened, AAA was angry with Sexy Star, loved Taya, and would’ve switched that finish if they had control of those things in Lucha Underground. Lucha Underground did what they did either to show AAA doesn’t have that control or as a way to resolve Sexy Star’s feud with Worldwide Underground or maybe both, you decide. Almost exactly a year later, AAA decided they really loved Sexy Star and not so much Taya. Sexy Star is not with AAA now, but no one’s better at convincing promotions she’s worth their time and energy; no one’s better at selling the people in charge that she’s a Star. All logic says this is the last we see of Sexy Star, but all the history says it’s not.

What happened:

Terrible big slaps are great

Rush challenged Marco to at title match next week after his win, and Marco accepted with a punch.

The first fall ends with the rarely seen over the top rope toss DQ. A Coliseo tag title challenge follows.

Thoughts:

this was smooth

The main event was another generic match. Marco brought good intensity to his feud with Rush. Rush brought Rush. Terrible walloped Sam hard by mistake. I don’t know why we get so much of the Guerreros as técnicos but they were fine. This was better than having Pierroth involved.

Disappointingly short. Sky Team looked great when they were in control of the match; they were in control of the match for something less than 3 minutes. The rudos were good, but this was one of those CMLL matches where it felt like the some of the participants would rather be doing something else. No need to go out of your way to see this.

The fourth match was more exciting the undercard matches, and the two teams are getting better at working at each other. The same headscissors blocked into a powerbomb spot worked a lot better this week. The crowd was also shockingly into this match, and not just about Stigma. The técnicos still are far from my favorites and I wasn’t into to this as much as those fans, but I can’t complain too much about getting an actual big 2v2 match.

Cuatrero powerbomb

The women’s match qualified as good, but I didn’t really get into it all that much. It’s the usual problems with Dalys; she’s ambitious in trying stuff in the ring, but it looks forced. The Gory Stretch spot came together awkwardly, where it wasn’t clear who was doing what until they finally got the move together. She’s done the double wristlock cradle then she did to win the first fall here. Both women pulled off a lot but it never came off like a big match.

The first two matches were ordinary. Joker & Diabolika were tougher to tell apart with matching outfits, which doesn’t say much for Joker. Rey Apocalipsis had some energy and neat submissions.

The show sounds like it was better than Tuesday. They’re still doing the Cavernario/Roja feud, which heavily suggests Bucanero isn’t winning. (Which makes sense, since that wasn’t the title hew as supposed to be challenging for in the first place.)

Dragon Rojo is doing a TV bit this week, which is an odd reason to miss matches but probably the case.

CMLL is giving everyone who donated to their food drive for earthquake victims free tickets to Sunday’s show. You have to message them on Facebook with your info so they can match it to a list.

Okumura is back in Japan, getting his neck checked. I have no idea where Super Halcon is.

Today is Lucha Underground 3×39, the third part of Ultima Lucha 3. It’s the last one hour show of the season, as next week’s final will be two hours. Matches on the show

  • Drago, Pindar, Vibora (c) vs the Mack, Killshot and Dante Fox in a Lucha Underground Trios Championship match
  • Taya vs Sexy Star in a last luchadora standing match
  • Pentagon Dark vs Son of Havoc in a ladder match for the Gift of the Gods (preview clip)

That Taya/Sexy Star match is going to be weird in the context of what happened at TripleMania. It was also weird when it happened. Sexy Star had quit AAA, over not wanting to lose the mixed tag titles to Taya. This was their first match since that happened. They haven’t been in the same match again.

Lucha Underground’s series 3 finale will air a day early in a movie theater. The two hour finale will air in Los Angeles at the 4DX auditorium at LA Live. This press release explains this is much more about getting publicity for the 4DX concept – “adds moving seats, effects like winds, water and lightning”. LU is the first TV show to be shown this way. I’m not sure how that will adapt to wrestling matches, but I’d watch the show hanging upside down if it meant I could see the finale a day early. Tickets are going to media and fans, though the process of getting them isn’t mentioned – the network president says to contact info@elreynetwork.com.

If you’re looking for signs about a season 4, doing something like this suggests El Rey hasn’t given up on the idea. On the other hand, El Rey ran season long marathons to close out season 1 and season 2 of Lucha Underground but will not be doing that this time around.

Sexy Star will be on the 10/22 MDA card in Monterrey as Dulce Sexy.  She was Sexy Dulce before. It doesn’t matter. She was booed last time she appeared in Monterrey, which seems like it should matter.

AAA’s had a run on UK’s Front Runner TV, which ended quickly and without much explanation. There was a story that the announcing was so bad that the network dumped it, but it appears the actual reason was the show got the network in trouble over broadcast standards. There was a complaint filed following the Pagano/Psycho Clown match from last year’s TripleMania match. AAA’s TV show aired at 7pm, UK laws don’t allow airing shows with lots of violence until 9, and that Pagano & Psycho match broke the rules a million times over.

That is more of a problem with the TV network not realizing what that they had than anything AAA did. It does show the difficulty in exporting AAA (and Lucha Underground) to other countries, as the times of the day a network may be allowed to actually air the shows could be limited.

Mini Difunto unmasked Devil Boy in Arena Pavillon del Norte. Devil Boy was unmasked as Enrique Arturo Lomelí Sánchez, 19 years old, 5 years a wrestler.

WMC was supposed to have Dr. Killer putting his hair up against Toxico’s mask. Toxico was said to be hurt, and Fly Katana came out to put up his mask instead. Dr. Killer won, and Fly Katana was unmasked as José Francisco Briones Cruz, from Mexico City, 36 years, and 13 years. This is the one and only match I have for Fly Katana in 2017. However, back in 2014, Fly Katana had a match also with a mask match Dr. Killer. That didn’t come up in the recap. WMC says they’ll do the actual match on 10/29. The semimain on this show ended with a double countout draw.

great match roundup, week of 2017-09-30

one more time

I posted this at a reasonable rate of speed. Can’t imagine that’ll last. Soberano/Cavernario and Fenix/Marty were both really watchable in doing very different matches (though ones that exactly fitted the current style of their promotion.)

MOTYC is updated.
