the Vampiro/Mundo/Taya thing has probably been a storyline from the start

On this week’s TV, AAA aired a vignette with Johnny Mundo and Vampiro arguing over Vampiro taking the AAA Reina de Reinas championship from Taya. Among other things, you get to learn how AAA translates douchebag to Spanish.

The backstage segment appeared along side the matches AAA taped on June 30th in Puebla. There’s also a skit with Hijo del Fatnasma & Vampiro in that same room. I had assumed that, AAA had actually taped the vignettes later, to work off Twitter feuds and fill in storyline gaps, and then edited it back into the older taping. I assumed wrong.

A couple weeks ago, AAA aired two skits of Johnny Mundo calling Kevin Kross (as part of a storyline where Kross is splitting from Johnny Mundo.) Let’s look at the room

via AAA

It’s the same walls and the same duct work. I know, you don’t want to hear about duct work on Monday mornings, but here we are. These skits and the one with Vampiro telling Johnny Mundo he was taking away the Reina de Reinas title from Vampiro look to like they were taped in the same place. The Kross/Mundo aired on the July 22nd episode of AAA TV, the Aguascalientes TV was taped on July 27th, so it’s impossible they were taped in Aguascalientes. The previous time Mundo was in Mexico before that was – the June 30th Puebla show, which this skit aired along side. They had to be taped on June 30th.

Here’s what Dave Meltzer wrote in the Wrestling Observer in his July 24th edition, likely told to him by Johnny Mundo himself

The story actually dates back to when Johnny Mundo was being brought to Mexico for a photo shoot with all three of his belts. They said they were doing shoots with all the belts and asked Mundo to bring Taya’s belt with him when he came in. Then when he was there, they said they needed to shoot more photos with the Reina de Reinas belt, so asked him to leave the belt there so they could do that. Then, when they had possession of the belt back, they announced that Taya had been stripped of the title because she used a choke when she won the title from Ayako Hamada (which was back on 4/21 in Tijuana in what has been called the company’s best match of the year) and that the title could only change hands via pin or submission.

That can not be true if AAA taped those both the Vampiro & Kross vignettes in Puebla. Puebla was taped on June 30th. AAA didn’t announce the title was vacant until July 1st. Mundo taped a skit talking about AAA keeping the Reina de Reinas a day before he claims he knew AAA was taking them away. It does not add up as the truth, so it has to be a storyline.

What I think was supposed to happen is Taya was going to drop the title in Nuevo Laredo to set up the Sexy Star title win, couldn’t because of the car accident, couldn’t make it to another show to do it, they came up with this storyline to handle it, and it blew up way more than they were expecting. But don’t take my word for it, I’ve been wrong on this one – LOUD wrong on this one – from the start. It didn’t make sense to me why they would do some of the stuff they’ve done if it was a storyline and it still doesn’t really, but it looks to me like it was one from the start.

if I’m right, the practical things we can take from this

  • Johnny Mundo’s on much better terms than AAA than we thought and isn’t a certainty to drop the titles at TripleMania by any means
  • the foreigner that’s been hinted at added to the Lady Shani/Sexy Star title match at TripleMania might be Taya after all. That’ll make for a really heated match.
  • everyone in LU doesn’t really hate Vampiro and Vampiro isn’t as bad at his job as it seemed; he actually took a bullet on this one to get it over.
  • don’t tape all your vignettes in the same room if they’re supposed to happen in different cities

Garza, Bestia, and Daga all got involved in the main event, which La Mascara fouling and unmasking Penta after a ref bump. Team Yellow put the referee thru a wood panel post match. Black Taurus showed up wearing a Yellow shirt post match, so he’s on their team too.

Penta challenged Mascara to a mask vs hair match at The Crash Anniversary show, which I believe would be in November.

Rey Horuz missed both this show and Mexicali. He did end it to Monterrey, where they had a surprise The Crash Cruiserweight multiman match and Rey Fenix ended up with the title. Rey Horus and The Crash had decided to go separate ways in advance of these cards and that’s his last match for the time being.

The Crash says they’ll be back on 09/02, which shapes up as a difficult date for getting talent with BOLA going on that weekend. That might be why the undercard feuds (Daga/Garza, Jack/Bestia, Oraculo/Black Danger) are getting more attention, since those guys are all free.

CMLL (SUN) 08/06/2017 Arena México [CMLL]

Marcela/Zeuxis should be fun. REINA’s site confirms this is meant to be Heidi’s title; no idea if Keyra is still champion, but this isn’t about her title.

The Mexican promoters of the Mayweather/McGregor fight say it’ll air on free TV, as expected. They haven’t announced a network, but it’s expected to be Televisa. There’s still no official announced plans for AAA TripleMania, but they have time – if they announce something two weeks out (by this Saturday), they’re still doing good.

Record has a brief interview with Angelico, who’s returned from his European trip feeling that the wrestling there is better than Mexican wrestling at the moment. He feels Europeans have advanced, while Mexican wrestling has not advanced and are always doing the same stuff, and Mexican wrestlers are too content with their places and aren’t aiming to be the best. He’s not wrong.

Either this is a setup for a rudo turn or a setup for him heading back to Europe.

5) Ángel de Oro, Titán, Valiente vs Cuatrero, Hechicero, Sansón
6) Carístico, Marco Corleone, Volador Jr. vs Cavernario, Gran Guerrero, Shocker

This would be Shocker’s first match in a CMLL ring in four weeks, though he was scheduled to work the fair shows in Durango this past weekend and appeared to make them. He was working indie shows, which suggests it wasn’t an injury absence. Semimain looks like it’d be a lot of fun. Again, Zeuxis was already announced as appearing in REINA in October, so that seems like the outcome.

6) Sam Adonis b Blue Panther [hairLUCHA LIBRE VIERNES ESPECTACULAR DE ARENA MEXICO 4 DE AGOSTO DEL 2017 FUNCION COMPLETA (posted by VideosOficialesCMLL)
Adonis took falls 1/3, the last using the ropes after Tirantes fell down. Adonis bragged and said he was coming for the hair and mask of all the legends of lucha libre.

The crowd was loud for Blue Panther and Sam Adonis and it was the best match they’ve had. Both men did promos after the match, and I was a little surprised there wasn’t any obvious direction.

Niebla Roja versus Gran Guerrero is happening on the Anniversario show. It wasn’t much over on this show and it doesn’t feel like a main event at all, but they wouldn’t have had Niebla Roja say that date except to get idea over to the fans who might not think about going to another show until then. It may not be alone, the Diamante Azul/Rush challenges felt like a bit more than a one off, and there’s the back story of Azul taking Pierroth’s mask in March. Maybe a repeat of the winners advance tag match is possible, but I think CMLL still is planning on Roja/Guerrero.

There’s one other Anniversario thing that wasn’t announced, but seems to be in motion. The top tecnico team has had a title match on that show in recent years. Volador, Mistico and Valiente aren’t do much otherwise, so that would work for them, they just need a good working rudo team to face. It could always be Hijos del Infierno, the default choice, but it feels like NGD is being set up for that spot. They’re getting protected more CMLL remembers to protect anyone in the midcard, and thy’ere flashing around two sets of trios titles, as if they’re setting up to go for a third. It’d be a big spot for them and CMLL slow plays guys so maybe it’s too soon to hope for, but it could work as well as last night’s match.

The big banners for the 09/01 Gran Prix are up, which look impressive and imposing, but also like they block off a whole lot of seats from being usable. I think they did over 10,000, and they might have been able to do more if they had the non-obstructed seats.

No results from last night’s The Crash show in Mexicali as of yet. The Crash posted a photo of a cut Jack Evans, thanks to Bestia 666. Keyra (that’s how she’s spelling it, so I’ll try to stick with it) missed the show due to flight issues but says she’ll be in Tijuana. Draztick Boy replaced Lio Rush last night and will probably be part of tonight’s show somehow. Crowd looked a bit under 50% full, in the same range as the Ring Side (Octagon, Hijo del Octagon, Mistico vs Rush, Pierroth, Black Abyss Jr.) did there in June.

Today’s AAA TV will finish off the taping from Puebla. Yesterday, AAA posted a vignette with Johnny Mundo and Vampiro, playing off their real troubles. Only, in this continuity, Vampiro wants to strip Johnny Mundo off the mega title and Johnny wants to still be champion, the opposite way it played out in Tijuana. Mundo’s playing the same heel character he has been all along in AAA, nothing’s changed there no matter what’s happening on Twitter.

Here’s the thing about the vignette: they’re treating it as if it was taped as part of the Puebla taping. It could not have actually happened at the Puebla taping, or Mundo & Taya have been doing a storyline from the get go. This Puebla taping happened on June 30th, the title was vacated the next day, Mundo and Taya said they didn’t find out was happening until that point. The vignette has Mundo upset about what happened with the Reina de Reinas title but, even in real time, it hadn’t happened yet. My head started spinning working this out.

I do not think Mundo & Taya are lying, I think AAA taped some extra material when Mundo came back in Aguascalientes to get over the new storyline based on the real life solution – only the Puebla TV shows were already finished, so this content has only ended up on their YouTube. The dialogue is all about the Kross/Hernandez/Bronce match airing last week, so this should’ve aired last week, but it didn’t air on TV at all. Maybe they’ll throw in with a “pasado semana” caption this week, because it really needs to air on TV if it’s going to reach people who don’t already know and might care.

It’s really good that AAA is taping extra material, by the way, even if it’s out of sequence. It’s always seemed like, be it because of AAA or Televisa or Mexico, they’ve been unable to film backstage skits at at least half the taping they run. AAA tries to tell big stories and needs those skits to make any sense of them; if that means filming twice as much at some shows because you can’t do any at the others, they really should go for it. You can not produce too much content in 2017.

Shows this weekend

Saturday

  • The Crash is back in Tijuana with Penta vs La Mascara main event. It’s a scaled down show compared to what they’ve running in the past; no Mysterio, not many outside of Mexico wrestlers, and even Fenix is out in AAW instead tonight. They’re going to learn how over The Crash name and feuds are with this show. This is probably a scheduling blimp but still interesting. If they do pretty well, then maybe they’ve reached a point where they don’t need as many names going forward. It’s still a good card, thought it’s still likely to only be seen on handhelds. After talking about a VOD/streaming deal being close in recent months, they’ve been careful not to even hint about one this time around.
  • Arena Coliseo has Marco Corleone vs Vangellys for the heavyweight title. Marco’s clearly going to win and, with all due respect to both guys, this is not a match I’m sad we’re missing – but it’s crazy CMLL is going to make it available. It’s a lot easier for them than the Crash; Crash has to figure out how they’re going to record these things and how they’re going distribute them. CMLL’s figured all that out, has all they need, and should be recording every title match (probably every show) at this point. Even the most bare bones, one camera and no commentary video, is going to be watched – especially when it’s Marco, who has a lot of fans. You can not have too much content.
  • HUMO is running in Salon Citalli, with Cosrario Negro, Drako, and Super Crazy vs Mr. Aguila, Shyru Dragon and Super Mega – which is just about the indie equivalent of grabbing names out of a hat. They already announced they’re running a show on 09/02 with Kongo Kong, and the thing to watch here is if they announce who he’s facing.
  • Lucha Libre Boom has a charity show in Arena Lopez Mateos. The main event was originally Flamita & Negro Casas vs Mr. Niebla & TBA, but Flamita’s in The Crash. The new main event is Caristico & Negro Casas vs Mr. Niebla & Titan, with the usual group of people on the undercard

5) Diamante Azul vs Rush
6) Dragón Lee, Mistico, Niebla Roja vs Gran Guerrero, Mephisto, Último Guerrero

Azul & Rush feuding, four weeks away from the Gran Prix. Would Rush cost his country the match just to be annoying? Yes, yes he would.

More Roja & UG in the main event. The fourth is a weird mix of Adonis opponents. Maravilla being brought back quick to a Friday night is a good sign for her (and that should be a pretty good match.) Esfinge gets to be the designated Panther partner for the night in their never ending war with Puma & Tiger. Minis match is even good.

NGD in motion

Recapped: 08/04/2017

All matches aired live from Arena Mexico

Drone, Fuego, Pegasso beat Disturbio, Sagrado, Virus
(15:34 [5:25, 4:20, 5:49], 2/3, ok, via VideosOficialesCMLL)

Better than the usual opener but still a bit shaky. First few minutes of the match were very slow, not as if Virus was ding tricky mat work but as if they were dedicated to standing the corner of the ring while something else was happening elsewhere that was distracting the crowd. It got better with Virus’ nifty reversal into a mecedora, and they picked up the action a lot I the second and third fall. There was a lot more action than usual in those falls, but some shaky moments too. A lot of seemed to be around, Sagrado, though it didn’t seem like he was always that responsible for it. Drone had an up and down match too.

don’t try the Gedo clutch on Virus

El Gallito & Microman beat Mije & Perico Zakarías
(12:18, Gallito submits Mije + Microman headstand splash Zacarias, good, via  VideosOficialesCMLL)

Lots of fun, and better timing than the last match. They ended it just as they started to run out of steam, and did a lot before it that entertained the crowd. The dives were wild, and not well caught, but they all lived. They do keep adding in a few new bits and aren’t even sticking to a set match at this point, which is probably unnecessary but nice to see. Crowd loved them.

Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón beat Rey Cometa, Soberano Jr., The Panther (17:53 [2:07, 3:07, 12:39], 1/3, great, via VideosOficialesCMLL )

Chalk up another exciting NGD match. They got the advantage of being able to all out for a big show – it was Brillo Cometa level match – and some técnicos who were going just as hard as them. The Dinamitas are improving in every match, with the monkey flip spot looking much better than last week, and they’re not losing track of playing off the crowd while getting in all their moves. Soberano, Panther and Rey Cometa looked just as spectacular, and they keep taking it higher and higher in the third fall. They might have gotten a little bit too long for the fans in the building, but I enjoyed it, and this was the right night to do an epic match with these guys. They came off as guys to watch in front of a big crowd.

Ángel de Oro, Diamante Azul, Marco Corleone beat Hechicero, Pierroth, Rush
(10:40 [5:29, 5:11], 1/2 DQ, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL )

What Happened: Diamante Azul and Rush feuded, and Rush unmasked Diamante Azul at the end. Diamante Azul demanded a singles match with Rush next week, and a mask versus hair match. Rush was non committal to either, though the singles match is obviously happening.

Review: Another Rush & Pierroth match, though the crowd was more into everything than usual. Hechicero and Angel de Oro were really trying. Rush was not really trying. Diamante Azul seemed invested but not particularly good – he came up way short on his tope in the first fall. I don’t particularly want to see another week of this.

Diamante Azul is inescapable

Carístico, Niebla Roja, Volador Jr. beat Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero
(11:54 [2:40, 3:06, 6:08], 2/3, good, via VideosOficialesCMLL )

What Happened: Gran Guerrero & Niebla Roja feuded, with Gran getting away with ripping of Niebla Roja’s mask in the second fall.

Review: [good] the better performance, both in work and results, that Niebla Roja really needed in this feud. It may be too late, the crowd really saw them as the third most interesting airing and the challenge for the Anniversary match didn’t get the reaction they’d want for that sort of thing. Maybe they’ll still get there, maybe something else (Azul/Rush) will get added in, but this feels not that big. Volador & Euforia worked well together and Carístico had a better match here than he’s had for the last week.

Sam Adonis beat Blue Panther, hair vs hair
(15:15, 1/3, good, via VideosOficialesCMLL )

  1. Sam Adonis Michinoku Driver (2:14)
  2. Blue Panther nudo lagunero (0:44)
  3. Sam Adonis Michinoku Driver w/ropes (12:17)

What Happened:

After a ref bump, Adonis used the Michinoku Driver to put down Blue Panther, and grabbed the ropes to hold on outside of Tirantes view. Adonis bragged about his win and threatened to unmask and shave all the legends. There were no seconds for the match and no one was obviously set up as the next person to go after Adonis, though there was a lot of talk about the Gran Prix on the show.

Review: [good] So, I just wrote about how CMLL was at least aware not to have Tirantes referee important matches, and here’s Tirantes refereeing an important matches. He didn’t appear massively screw up anything, but he did make himself the center of the show at times. The crowd want to kill him as much as Sam Adonis and he took some spotlight away from what they were trying to do.

What they were trying to do did work. This was the best match they’ve had, with some of the stuff that looked a little rough in earlier matches coming off smooth here. The crowd was wildly behind Blue Panther and against Adonis, the kind of one sided reaction that’s unusual for both CMLL and professional wrestling right now. This might be Blue Panther’s last main event singles match for all we know, and he did it in a way where the crowd was into all of his near falls and comebacks. Sam’s adapted to this environment well. They keep running that Gran Prix promo between matches, and Adonis is going to go from being just another guy to fill out the team last year to probably the biggest star on the World team to the Arena Mexico fans. This is an unexpected success story.

super angel de oro

Recapped: 07/29/2017

All matches aired live from Arena Mexico

What happened:

Rey Bucanero attacked Angel de Oro as soon as he was safely down the stairs for the main. Angel de Oro was fist out, so he head to wait for help to show up. Marco was in a little bit more of a rush than Volador. Rey Bucanero sneaks off Angel de Oro’s mask between the first and second fall. Tirantes doesn’t notice but we can see that Angel de Oro has a lot of hair. Oro did appear to the back to get a new mask, and came just in time to get a clean house on the rudos. Terrible pins Marco, Angel de Oro wraps Terrible in a huracanrana to tie, but trying to do the same on Rey Bucanero led to a powerbomb for the rudo win. Bucanero challenged to a title match next week.

Sagrado unmasked Stigma for the finish of their match. It went nowhere.

Matches:

Apocalipsis & Yago beat Fiero & Sangre Imperial
(11:30 [5:25, 2:23, 3:42], 1/3, ok, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

Good on the sliding scale of Tuesday openers, as they did enough to actually get the crowd into it. This was a more active match than usual and had some highlights; Fiero’s third fall run really impressed the announcers. Sangre Imperial didn’t screw anything up but still looks slow. Yago did fine here, but he looks a little heavier than last year. He has Pentagon Jr.’s body and is doing a ninja gimmick, that’s going to be a problem once people notice Yago.

a Yago highlight

Arkángel de la Muerte, Cancerbero, Sangre Azteca beat Astral, Oro Jr., Star Jr.
(17:14 [6:15, 5:40, 5:19], 2/3, ok, via VideosOficialesCMLL)

Slightly better than usual because they kept it moving better, but it still wasn’t interesting. Astral’s backlflip escape doesn’t seem to work out for him ever.

Blue Panther Jr., Stigma, The Panther beat Disturbio, Misterioso Jr., Sagrado
(12:49 [3:23, 4:26, 5:00] , 2/3 DQ, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

Fine enough Tuesday match, with action if nothing we don’t see three times a week. Misterioso has lured Distubrio into his fall choking ways, that’s not good for him. The Panthers looked OK.

Sagrado does a lot of things

Rey Cometa beat Virus in a lightning match
(7:54, frog splash, good, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

A higher end lightning match. They battled dramatically for a win rather than just going thru their sets of moves. It wasn’t revolutionary in what they did and they weren’t doing all their biggest spots, but they were clean in what they did and maybe the last few minutes feel important. I got a Virus ringpost armdrg and that’s a lot.

Dragón Lee, Guerrero Maya Jr., Johnny Idol beat Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora, Vangellys
(14:12 [3:59, 3:14, 6:59], 2/3, good, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

The semimain was a delight for Dragon Lee not understanding the concept of a B-show and just throwing himself all over the place for Dragon Rojo dropkicks. Everyone was giivng a little bit more than expected for this one and it made it stand out for a Tuesday show, but Lee really came out looking like a star. Idol did a lot in the third fall but still seems a step slow and I’d rather see Drone in his spot. The rudos attempting to destroy the Dragon Lee banner after the fact was amusing. I really need Dragon Rojo to stop doing the top rope double stomp.

Dragon Lee gets Vangellys

Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero, Terrible beat Ángel de Oro, Marco Corleone, Volador Jr.
(4:12 [1:45, 2:27], 1/2, ok, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

A super quick, a length unbecoming of what should be ending the show. (They ended early than usual too, so it wasn’t a timing issue.) They did do a lot for the time they had and I guess that’s better than standing around for a while, but there are people in this match who might have no have even bothered putting on their gear. Bucanero’s post match promo building up Angel de Oro as tecnico was good and I suspect that’ll be the same in their title match.
