Ángel de Oro © vs Rey Bucanero for the CMLL World Middleweight Championship
(18:19 [3:16, 1:52, 13:11], 1/3, good, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

  1. Angel de Oro Skayde Special (3:16)
  2. Rey Bucanero sit down powerbomb (1:52)
  3. Angel de Oro mecedora (13:11)

What Happened in the main event:

this seemed like a better idea in Bucanero’s head

Tirantes refused to count the first fall pin because Bucanero didn’t have his shoulders down enough. Angel de Oro adjusted it slightly, and yelled at Tirantes after the fall, which is played as Tirantes being a rudo. Tirantes is spectacularly late starting a count later for no obvious reason, which causes a similar reaction. For the second straight day, Tirantes screws up a “rudo grabs hand to stop the count” spot. Angel de Oro spends most of the match limping after Bucanero drives one of his knees into the match, but Bucanero himself seems to be having a left shoulder issue after doing a dive off the ramp. He tries to catch Angel de Oro’s moonsault one armed as a results and it doesn’t go too great. They do a few more stops in the ring before finishing up, so it doesn’t seem to have derailed things.

Review:

moonsault to a one armed man

I took my own advice and skipped everything but the main event. The fourth match looked god, fun in the usual crowd pleasing way of an active Tuesday match, but nothing to separate from the ones that are done weekly.

The bit that actually stood out the most in the title match was Angel de Oro selling a body part, an exotic event in CMLL. He kept at it for a long portion of the match and even sort of tampered down selling it, adjusting the knee pad a bit, as if to note it was feeling a little better to start running again. That was something interesting we got of Angle de Oro and it didn’t seem like there’d be anything interesting out of him; he was still doing largely the same moves, some looking better (moonsault) than others (embarrassing kick to set up the stunner, which I’m convinced Angel de Oro has never watched on video because it always looks bad), but at least it gave a different feel. Bucanero is willing to throw himself around, to his own detriment in the end here, but can’t move at a great pace. Slowing down Angel de Oro helped compensate for that, but this was just a good match and not the crazy miracle of the match with Hechicero.

Tirantes was terrible in this match, the second straight day of him being terrible. CMLL knows he’s bad, they know enough about all their referees to make sure Edgar is the one in charge of the truly important matches, but they don’t care enough to get some better people in here or get people to pay attention. Tirantes was messing up counts in this match, and wasn’t paying attention in others, and it happens regularly.

Rush is supposed to grab Tirantes arm, can’t, so Tirantes just stops counting and everyone is confused

Matches:

(14:27 [5:13, 4:56, 4:18], 1/3, ok, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

Rey Samuray came out spectacular in the first fall and the first two falls were generally interesting, but this match faded to a conclusion. They really should’ve mad the classic version of the Spanish Fly the last spot of the match but bringing back the hair feud we’ve all moved on from was deemed more important.

indie Rey Samuray must be fun

Amapola, Dalys, Tiffany beat La Vaquerita, Princesa Sugehit, Sanely
(14:41 [6:10, 3:03, 5:28], 2/3, ok, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

reason for GIF: I totally forgot Tiffany’s finisher is a reinera because she gets so few wins. And there was nothing else to say about this one.

Shockercito © beat Pierrothito for the CMLL World Pequeño Estrellas Championship (14:01 [3:23, 3:05, 7:33], 2/3, good, via VideosOficialesCMLL)

The minis title match was really good, as the two long time CMLL luchadors are really smooth working with each other. This is the advantage to having the same dozen people wrestling each other forever, they can get really good at doing it. Nothing went wrong in the match, and Shockercito threw him into big spots like his tope. It was missing a little excitement from me to go higher, but the crowd seemed to enjoy it a lot.

Shockercito tope

Rey Cometa, Soberano Jr., Stigma beat El Malayo, Puma, Tiger
(15:03 [4:04, 3:47, 7:12], 2/3, ok via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

This was exciting and competitive. It followed the usual CMLL trios big match formula, but they were doing it at incredible speed. It really was moving fast at the end of the first fall and again in the third fall. This looked on paper like something to set up Malayo and Stigma, but they were bit players to the other four. Rey Cometa is the one of the most dramatic sellers of moves in CMLL; he was even selling his own rope flip Spanish Fly by the end.

Tiger tornillo

Dragón Lee, Mistico, Stuka Jr. beat Ephesto, Mephisto, Negro Casas
(11:08 [5:56, 5:12], 1/2, ok, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

Notes: Stuka and Mephisto went at it from the start. Stuka surprised Mephisto with a huracanrana in the first, in a fall the rudos were otherwise winning. Stuka took the second fall cleanly, setting up a title match for next week.

This not much of a match because of it being two falls and deciding to save more of Stuka & Mephisto for next week. They were alright, like they’re always alright, and I expect they’ll have (or had by the time you read this) a solid good title match. Negro Casas & Dragon Lee were the real stars here, chopping each other so hard that you can see the sweat flying off of them, and finishing a short exchange with an armdrag and a pose that sent Casas rolling up the ramp. I don’t know if Casas can go a dozen minutes whenever he wants not, but he can look world class in short sprints. That’s perfect for CMLL trios matches. Dragon Lee doesn’t take shows off. Mistico had some iffy spots, including messing up the boost dropkick near the end, but there was some good stuff here.

Seriously, they’re headlining a show next year. Write it down.

Carístico beat Rush
(10:48, ok, via
VideosOficialesCMLL)

  1. Rush corner dropkick (1:50)

  2. Caristica (4:06)

  3. DQ Rush foul (4:52)

Notes: Carsitico tried wait for Rush to come out the entrance, so Rush came out thru the crowd, and was laying in the ring when Carístico finally turned around. About 4 minutes into the third fall, Caristico puts Rush in a casita, and Rush just fails to kick out. He appears to try and grab Tirantes’s hand to stop the count, but he’s nowhere near it and Tirantes isn’t helping. Tirantes does tell them to ignore it, unlike any other match. Carístico does a weird look frogsplash, and they repeat the spot with Rush grabbing Tirantes this time. Rush fouled Caristico to end the mask, unmasked him, and him with the stretcher as the fans were walking out.

The main event was not as bad as I thought it might be, but the finish was fairly terrible and Rush barely got out of first gear. Rush works so much slower than everyone else, but it’s OK if he’s bringing something else. He’s bringing not great looking work (the La Mistica looked bad) and threatening to murder Tirantes repeatedly doesn’t make the match more compelling on it’s own.) Rush desperately trying to do moves to win the third fall right away doesn’t fit with him throwing away the match at the end, unless Rush’s character is supposed to be a guy who tries until it gets too hard and then looks for a way out. (Maybe that IS his character.) Carístico didn’t show much on his own, and he’s not really a guy who pull more effort out of people at this point in his career.

Diamante Azul, working rudo, snuck in a foul and used the ropes to beat Marco. That set up a title match.

Title match sounds like it went well. They had a ref bump and Mephisto got a visual pin as if to tell the fans that Mephisto really wasn’t going to win and then Stuka hit the big splash but only for two. Mephisto used a valagueza soon after for the win. That’s a more self aware finish than usual.

That’s the second draw in four weeks, much more often than usual.

Last Tuesday was the Angel de Oro/Rey Bucanero match, so tonight’s Tuesday’s show either has a new feud picked at random or perhaps nothing at all. Very exciting. The main event has Rush weirdly on the tecnico side. Diamante Azul was on the tecnico side in Puebla and ended up feuding with Marco Corleone. That same pattern would suggest Rush versus Ultimo Guerrero as the new feud tonight.

Angel de Oro & Rey Bucanero are actually still on opposite sides of the semimain but there’s only a 50/50 chance they’ll remember they were feuding. They team with Niebla Roja, Titan, Mr. Niebla and Terrible. Drone, Fuego & Guerrero Maya take on old rudos Ephesto, Luciferno, and Felino. Luciferno is the young man on the team at 45.

Rey Cometa takes on Forastero in what should be a good lightning match. Vaquerita, Marcela and Sanely face Seductora, Metalica, and Tiffany in something that doesn’t look much good. Acero & Aereo face Pequeno Universo 2000 & Pequeno Universo in the opener.

The Crash put a date to one of the three apuesta matches they announced as doing this year: Oraculo and Black Danger will have their mask match on 09/02 in Tijuana. Black Danger’s the rudo but also probably the favorite since he’s Tijuana based and Oraculo really has only been using the character in this promotion.

Maximo teased Rush coming to The Crash, which they tease all the time and means nothing.

Usually, when you hear about a fight between a wrestler and a fan, it’s tough to find good video of it. Not when the wrestler just posts a clip himself: Garza has a video of him punching a fan from Tijuana. It sounds like the fan pulled the barrier back to cause Garza to fall, and you can see the security guy point out the fan who did it before realizing what Garza was going to do. La Mascara appears to have nearly gotten into a fight with the same fan later during the show.

AAA is telling finalists for the La Llave a La Gloria tournament to bring their gear and full identification. No S/N this time, I guess. They’re also telling fans to email for tickets if they want to be at the event. I’m sure there’s some logistical reason for it, but anyone lucha libre fan who shows up at Arena Naucalpan at 9am on a Saturday should get a space.

Monday IWRG was delayed until overnight due to baseball, which might be a regular thing for the next couple of months. I didn’t have a chance to sort thru what aired, but it looked like it was a combination of Sunday undercard and the Emperador Azteca/Hijo del Pantera match that was skipped from weeks ago. I’ll get to it later in their week.

Máscara de Bronce defeated Hernandez and Kevin Kross for the #1 contedner’s briefcase
(4:56, Mascara de Bronce 450 splash Hernandez, below average, via
Lucha Libre AAA)

What happened:

Aerostar splash

AAA seems to be alternating tapings with vignettes – there were some on the last show, there’s not any on this taping.

Kross & Hernandez take turns at beating up Mascara de Bronce in the “main event” until Hernandez knocks Kross down by throwing Bronce at him. Kross attacks Herandnez and sets up a table on the outside. Kross considers both men before throwing Bronce out and setting up to chokeslam Hernandez over the top rope and thru the table. Johnny Mundo shows up to ask Kross what he’s doing (and it’s a good question, gonna be tough to get Hernandez over.) Kross throws Hernandez down and, while Kross & Mundo discuss their business relationship, Bronce sneaks to the top rope and lands a 450 splash for the win. Kross comes back to the ring and chokeslams Bronce thru that table. Mundo tries to order Hernandez to take care of Kross, but Hernandez doesn’t seem to agree with that idea. Kross shows off the briefcase to Mundo, and the point is he and Mundo are definitely done. The real big news is AAA figured out this briefcase was supposed to be #1 between tapings.

In the third match, Lanzeloth took out Argenis by mistake via moonsault to the floor, then Parka also mistakenly takes out referee Copetes with a dropkick. Parka is still doing fine until Chessman catches him with a punch. OGT stall, choking Parka in the corner, obviously waiting for something to happen but having to a wait longer than they seem to be expecting. Finally, someone cues Ricky Marvin’s music. Marvin, wearing a La Parka shirt, cleans house with some help from Lanzleoth – until he nearly hits Parka by mistake, then Averno actually does shoves Marvin into Parka. Averno fouls Lanzleoth. Copetes finally returns from the dead to count three. The técnicos want nothing to do with Ricky after the match – they’re upset about him disappearing and coming back to cost them the match, but it’s not explained well this week. (Impressively for a lucha libre promotion, they’ve already recut the entrance video for Poder del Norte with Carta & Tito unmasked.)

Australian Suicide & Bengala, who broke up twice and then were partners again last time we saw them, had a heated rivalry match. Suicide is definitely a rudo by this match, but wins cleanly on his second attempt at landing his finish.

The TripleMania press conference is shown.

Thoughts:

Bronce is here to be thrown around pretty easily

The three way match was not even really a match, an angle and a couple of stunts. Bronce got tossed around the whole match, snuck in a fluee win, and then was back to being destroyed. They’re getting Kross over as much bigger deal than these two guys and I think that’s obviously the real plan but he probably needs to interact with people who are bigger deal than these two. The Mundo/Kross breakup seems way too fast, they were barely an onscreen team before it happened.

The semimain was a much better version of the Juarez trios match with the same guys. The rudos were entertaining destroying the tecnicos early, La Parka’s comedy spots didn’t monopolize the match as much, and they gave Lanzleoth much more things to do to justify his inclusion. Super Fly is finding a way to die in every match. The finish was way overbooked – Marvin returns to be a failure? – but this is still one of the better matches in the feud.

Suicide wins

The trios title match was a lot of fun, a full on sprint from the start that worked the entire time. It was worked a little bit like a CMLL match (careta leads to the comeback) but at a faster pace and some riskier spots than normally seen there. The last match was Poder Del Norte looking like a team, and the técnicos had caught up to them quite a bit with their teamwork in this match. Aerostar was especially out there, he’s really fallen in love with the shin aided springboard of late and he causally did the reverse springboard to the floor of death in the opening minutes of the match. This was only seven minutes but it felt like they packed a lot more into it, and it’s great we’re getting four more of these. I could see people liking the match even more than I did.

The opener was a fun midcard match between two rivals, the sort of thing we don’t get enough of on this show but really worked here. Both guys were really trying to make something out of this and it felt like they succeeded. It wasn’t as personal as it might have been and the neck vice killing time thing was the slowest moment, but it did follow a crazy shooting star press to the floor. They worked in some believable near falls near the end, it took Suicide two tries to hit the corkscrew SSP, and he was the right guy to win.

Frances/Dragon sounds like a foreigner losing his mask on his way out of town, which still could be fun.

MedioTiempo posted an interview with Psicosis/Ripper, which was from the last TripleMania press and might be a trasnscript of the interview he did with +LuchaTV since it’s the same subjects. It’s relevant today, because he mentions Histeria/Morphosis and Maniaco will be hopefully with him, and Morphosis is today booked in Puebla. Psicosis/Ripper also says he left CMLL on good terms, though he was still booked on a CMLL card the week he left. Likewise, Morphosis is listed tonight in Puebla but no one expects him to actually be there. Psicosis name drops Heavy Metal and Cibernetico as people AAA is talking to about coming in for the Copa TripleMania. Cibernetico’s amount of matches have diminished with the closing of Elite. Heavy Metal has disappeared on his own; only 11 known matches last year, and five this year.

One more name worth considering for as an AAA return for that match: Zorro. He was noticeably missing from all the The Crash shows, and was quietly removed from the Revolucha shows this weekend. He’s been dealing with a neck injury, bad enough that he seemed to be wrestling in a neck brace at times, so it could just be taking care of himself. Even if there’s nothing to it this weekend, he still fits the same category of stars from AAA’s past who AAA would want to reach out for their 25th Anniversary show. I’m sure they’ve asked, and it’s just about if there’s a deal to be made.

Morphosis’ match tonight isn’t all that interesting: the random lineup generation spits out the Panther kids & Soberano against Kraneo, Olimpico and whoever replaced Morphosis. The main event is strange, a relevos incriebles with rudos only one side. Essentially, Diamante Azul is a rudo for night with Negro Casas & Ultimo Guerrero against Caristicio, Marco Corleone and Mistico. It could be that a rudo just wasn’t available for that spot for whatever reason and Azul being on that side means nothing, but it also points at a Azul/Corleone match.

The big match is Stuka challenging Mephisto for the CMLL Welterweight Championship. Both men’s singles matches seem to depend on who they’re working with. They’re good trios wrestlers who haven’t shown a lot more they can do when they’re on their own. They’d had three 1v1 matches before – one in Arena Mexico, one on FanasticaMania – and Mephisto wins every time. It’ll probably the same here.

The rest of the show has Zeuxis & Sugehit running into each other again in a rare 2v2 women’s match, and a couple openers with mostly locals and nothing going on. The show airs at 9pm CT on CMLL’s YouTube.

In an in-ring promo on Saturday’s The Crash show, he said they’d be doing Jack Evans vs Bestia 666 in a hair match, Black Danger vs Oraculo in a mask match, and Daga vs Garza Jr. in a hair match by the end of the year. That last one is going to be the toughest.

El Universal says Televisa has been sued for unauthorized use of Blue Demon in the TV series of the same. It’s a really short story, but is not a surprise – articles leading into the show mentioned one of Blue Demon’s non-wrestling sons gave the ok, while luchador Blue Demon Jr. generally refused to talk about it but hinted he was very unhappy with the fictional story. The two have had disagreements over who owns the name and in what ways for years, this is just it coming back to life again.

Black Terry Jr. has amazing photos from the Zona 23 show.
