Ring of Honor announced Ultimo Guerrero & Terrible will be coming in for their 06/23 PPV and their 06/24 TV taping the next day. Ultimo was in ROH last year as part of ROH’s trios tournament, while this will be Terrible’s debut. No opponents announced.

An article on the history of Arena Mexico says the current capacity has gone down from 17,000 to 12,000. I don’t think that’s correct, it’s gone down but not that much. There’s an interesting story about the long running ruler of Mexico City, Ernesto Uruchurtu, being upset when Arena Mexico was being built, because it was about 4,000 seats bigger than the Auditorio Nacional he was having built for the government. He got his revenge by making the Lutteroths do extra work on the stability of the building (at an extra cost), under the idea that the fans would be jumping around during shows.

Lucha Underground will be back in two weeks. It may cost you more to watch. I can’t find any information on Sling’s site, but multiple people have noticed SlingTV is moving it to a higher tier which will cost $5 more a month. Fubo.TV has also upped their price since there’s been a new LU episode. The episodes are still the same prices on iTunes (and maybe will be released the next day the same way on Amazon?) if you’re willing to wait the day after to see the show.

Nicho 25 Anniversary t-shirts will be sold as part of The Crash’s benefit show for him on 06/02.

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report.

Lucha Libre in Japan

Both Volador & Dragon Lee got off to good starts with wins in their first matches of the Best of Super Juniors tournament. Dragon Lee defeated Hiromu Takahashi in the main event. He not only got to talk to end the show, but he picked up a win over the champion. That puts him in line for a title shot no matter how the rest of the tournament goes. Volador defeated Tiger Mask in the second match. Both matches are part of the full show available for free on NJPW World; no login needed. Dragon Lee faces Marty Scurll tomorrow morning in another match that’ll be aired live for subscribers.

Mephisto took 2/3 to keep the title. 6th defense

Main event seemed fine, but was mostly just good. Fourth match seemed like they were setting up Niebla/Angel, though it’d seem Dragon Rojo is still owed a title shot. Niebla Roja’s act is set to go on for a week or two more.

CMLL finishes their week of 1v1 matches tonight with Rey Cometa and Cavernario meeting once again in Arena Mexico. The match was set up last week, seemed like it was going to be a title match, wasn’t announced as a title match after all, and Cometa lost the title so it couldn’t have been one. Tuesday shows aren’t exactly on the same level of the hair matches they’ve had before, but Cometa & Cavernario have good chemistry and it should be an fun watch.

That’s the semimain. The actual main event is a grab back trios match, with Mr. Niebla, Kraneo and Hechicero facing Marco Corleone, Titan and Atlantis. New champ Soberano teams with the Panthers to take on Felino, Ripper and Sam Adonis. Stuka, Fuego and Drone face Misterioso, Sagrado and Virus; I wonder if the Soberano/Misterioso feud is still going, or if Soberano has been rocketed up the card past his current rival. The obligatory minis match is Electrico, Fantasy, and Aereo against Pequeno Nitro & Pequeno Olimipco and Mercurio. Magia Blanca & Bengala take on Artillero & Apocalipsis in the opener.

The show starts at 7:30pm on CMLL’s YouTube channel. I’d estimate the Cavernario/Cometa match taking place around 9:15ish.

AAA tapes tonight in Arena Aficion. It’s not a big venue, and should be an easy sell out for the promotion no matter what matches they run. I have no idea which matches they’ll run. The card they’re advertising generally makes sense with the current feuds, but AAA’s made a point of changing around their lineups on a regular basis the last few months. The main event is scheduled to be Psycho Clown versus Dr. Wagner, which they didn’t do as advertised in Tijuana and only did as a bonus match in San Luis Potosi. OGT face Parka/Argenis/Marvin, which is the Verano de Escandalo match. Monster & Murder faced Carta & Soul, which fits with their Verano match. Pimpi & Mamba are opposite sides of a tag match – there’s a lot of 2v2 matches announced for this show. We’ll see what actually happens. The show is scheduled to start at 8:30, which means it’ll probably start around the same time as Cometa & Cavernario. It’ll air in three weeks; they still have the Tlaxcala taping to air first.

Tonight’s taping will surely start with a homage to El Apache. Faby & Mary weren’t booked on the card, but it’s possible they may end up being there now. This would be the fourth straight AAA TV taping to start with a memorial to a recently deceased person: there were two tapings which started with remembrances for Joaquin Roldan, and Brazo de Oro was honored on the last show. That’s a depressing statistic.

The newspaper Basta had a big headline accusing AAA a fraud for advertising Psycho Clown & Dr. Wagner in mask matches both in Juarez (on 06/04) and Mexico City (at TripleMania.) SuperLuchas argues it’s more of a Descaro – a nervy move, and is worried fans might believe lucha libre has predetermined finishes. Visit a Facebook page on lucha libre and I’m pretty sure people already believed that. (Just, mostly when their guys lose; it’s all on the level when they win.) Anyway, the interesting thing to me is AAA actually hasn’t announced the Verano de Escandalo six way match yet on TV. This week’s main event was the angle setting it up, but the only match AAA’s so far even really stating for their TV viewers is Pagano/Mesias vs Scoria/Cuervo. If you just follow as a TV show, the match you’d assume this week’s main event set up is Taya/Faby, and that’s not on any card yet.

The NJPW Best of Super Juniors kicks off early tomorrow morning, and the first show will air for free live on NJPW World starting around 4:30 AM Central standard time. Volador Jr. is scheduled in the second match against Tiger Mask and Dragon Lee faces Hiromu Takashi in the main event (probably about two hours in if you’re not up for watching the whole thing.) Dragon Lee spoke at the kick off press conference, said he was honored to be there. Volador did not, because Volador wasn’t there. I dunno. He send a comment saying he’d prove he’s the best.

Silueta returns to Japan for a REINA show on 06/04. Fuego en el Ring says Silueta will be in Japan from June 1st to the 20th.

Monterrey promotions MDA & Llaves y Candados announced they’re both no longer running shows in Arena Coliseo Monterrey. They’re both moving to Gimnasio Nuevo Leon Unido in the city, which they’re hyping as a nicer facility which will allow them to do online ticket sales. LyC announced a show there for July 9th, and Roberto Figueroa said the main event will be Garza Jr. & Ultimo Ninja vs Santo Jr. & Rene Guajardo III based on Garza & Santo fighting to end the show this past weekend. Running in Arena Coliseo Monterrey used to have the advantage of getting the shows broadcast on Multimedios, since the Monterrey TV network owns the venue. Multimedios dropped the TV show last year, and I wonder what will be the long term future for that venue. I suspect other promotions will move in for the time being.

Clela Arena, the building which hosts UIPW shows in Los Angeles, will no longer host wrestling shows. This seems like a last minute change, since UIPW had a show announced there for this upcoming weekend.

The Claro graphic experiment is probably going to be a one off. I actually borrowed the idea and setup from video gaming streaming (which also is where the streaming software comes from) and it worked great for how it was intended to work. It just doesn’t quite fit for wrestling; I’d imagine it bigger/clear graphics for introduces and in between falls, taking advantage of the natural dead time in wrestling (and have less on screen when action is happening, since people aren’t looking for that.) I think there’s a blueprint here to do it but I’m skeptical it’s worth my time. It’s good to at least figure it out at least.

This is light week. All three feeds I use to record AAA weren’t working when the show aired; one came back just in time for the main event. I think what’s happening with the Guadalajara show is someone’s set up the TV broadcast to be streamed out for a half hour (as if that’s when the news is supposed to air), and so we’re going to see the first match and half of the second match until it gets fixed again. There was no Wednesday IWRG show and the best part of Sunday’s show will be up before you see this.

Mascara 2000 was upset to have to give up the Rey del Ring title and demanded the first shot at the winner. Imposible beat Super Mega with a counter dropkick to win the 30 man match. Mascara Sagrada, Dinamic Black, Black Warrior and Oficial AK47 all returned to IWRG in this match.

I’m in favor of any IWRG match that ends with Imposible being the best guy. +LuchaTV, in their quest to make sure I don’t need to do anything and maybe might update the lucahwiki instead, announced they’ll be putting up the Rey del Ring match complete at 6pm.

Today’s the 25th Anniversary of AAA’s first show, held in Veracruz. AAA’s spent this calendar year talking about it being their 25th Anniversary, so it seems odd that it’s actually kind of a quiet day – just some congratulations on Twitter. I suspect they’re saving the bigger celebrations for TripleMania, but there probably will be some mention on tomorrow’s TV taping.

The SuperLuchas article linked up there goes over the first card in detail. Interesting, at least to me, is I’ve had the unlisted dark match as Dr. Maldad & Mr. Maldad against Quarterback & Super Bowl. Instead, SuperLuchas mentions that first ever AAA match as Apocalipsis III & El Inmortal vs Barba Negra & Super Star. SuperLuchas magazine originated as a AAA run and focused lucha libre magazine and the website quotes it for these results, so they know what they’re talking about. The Super Star, a dozen names changes later, would be better know as Black Warrior.

Tonight’s CMLL Puebla show has Mephisto defending the CMLL Welterweight Championship against Negro Casas, in a rudo/rudo battle where Casas will easily be cheered. A title change is unlikely but not out of the question: CMLL books Casas in singles matches a lot anyway, it doesn’t change the CMLL champion count for the Universal tournament (both will hold team championships whatever happens here) and maybe Casas winning the welterweight championship would free CMLL to do something else with the tag team championship than keep it on hold until Shocker is really ready to return. Nothing will probably change because change in CMLL is rare (and we just got a dose of it on Friday, might last them for months), but it’s not a certainty.

The rest of the show has nothing special. The semimain has Mistico, tecnico Rush and Valiente against Euforia, Mr. Niebla and Ultimo Guerrero. It has enough names to make it good, but also the right people to turn it into not much. Niebla Roja tries teaming with non Guerrero rudos in the fourth match, partnering with Dragon Rojo & Polvora against Angel de Oro, Johnny Idol and Stigma. The outcome will probably be about the same.

Black Tiger & Policeman are back on the show, because we can’t go long without them on Mondays. They team with Lestat, Starman, Cancerbero and Raziel. Asutriano makes a welcome appearance and has a good partner in Rey Samuray, but not so good opponents in Hijo del Signo & Metalico. Meyer & Paris versus Camorra & Inquisidor start the show, which begins at 9pm on YouTube.

Arena Coliseo Monterrey looked to be full for the Hijo del Santo match last night. They set up a Santo Jr. (the son) versus Garza Jr. feud.

Templario, a man who is not Shocker/photo by CMLL

CMLL (SAT) 05/13/2017 Arena Coliseo [CMLL]
1) Apocalipsis & Cholo b Bengala & Leono
Rudos took 1/3.
2) Espanto Jr., Inquisidor, Metálico b Flyer, Magia Blanca, Starman
3) Marcela, Princesa Sugehit, Sanely b Dalys, Reyna Isis, Zeuxis
tecnicas took 2/3
4) Blue Panther, Fuego, Stuka Jr. b Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón
tecnicos took 1/3
5) Ángel de Oro, Atlantis, Carístico b Mephisto, Templario, Último Guerrero
Templario replaced Shocker, who was advertised to return on this show and did interviews to hype it. No explanation was given. Tecnicos took 2/3.

My guess is Shocker just didn’t show up – Templario’s fits as a fill in only if CMLL had no notice Shocker wasn’t going to wrestle (not an injury set back) and Shocker’s had issues not showing up in the past. Shocker’s gone silent on Twitter since around the time this show started.

CMLL (SUN) 05/14/2017 Arena México [CMLL]
1) Mercurio, Pequeño Olímpico, Pequeño Violencia b Aéreo, Eléctrico, Fantasy
Aereo replaced Stukita
2) Esfinge, Pegasso, Stigma b Disturbio, Puma, Sangre Azteca
3) Gran Guerrero, Kráneo, Pólvora b Blue Panther, Johnny Idol, Titán
Polvora replaced Dragon Rojo Jr. Rudos took 1/3.
4) Atlantis, Marco Corleone, Máximo Sexy b Ephesto, Luciferno, Mephisto
tencicos took 2/3
5) Carístico b Euforia
Caristico took 2/3.

A show.

Sam Adonis mentioned he’s starting as color commentator for the CMLL English language show. That’s the show that airs on the Fight Network, but hasn’t been airing lately – maybe this means it will again soon.

AAA’s press release says this round of La Llave de la Gloria winners will be announced on Wednesday. It also says things which are false or fabricated. The press release reads like someone wrote it on Wednesday, quotes and all, and didn’t stop to update it after the tryout actually happened.

The guy in charge of El Rey’s RT-ing the article where Vampiro says no Lucha Underground wrestlers will not being appearing on Impact is a thing that happened.

Today in social media issues condensed: UK’s Lucha Forever had Pentagon, Drago and Fenix booked for May 14th. Lucha Forever had to postpone the show, said to be due to venue issues. The LU guys got booked out to someone else in the UK. The LU guys got to London, and couldn’t find anyone to pick them up for wherever it is they were going. Vampiro went after Lucha Forever on Twitter & Facebook, while Lucha Forever said they had a guy there waiting to pick them up. The guys got picked up, I assume, and then everyone went back and deleted everything. Life went on!

Mucha Luchas Guadalajara announced they’re back on 07/02. If I remember/understood correctly, I believe a recent edition of Fuego en el Ring said the promotion was working on getting Flamita for their next show.

In Japan, Okumura was interviewed about his beck injury: he started doing rehab work right away, but he still has numbness in his thumb and index finger on his right hand. Okumura is getting his one month check up on May 18th, will return to Mexico to recover if everything looks good, and then be back in October for another check up (with MRI scans being sent to Japan in between.) He still hopes to be back wrestling by December, though that may be more positive thinking that something he can accomplish.

Lineups

IWRG (WED) 05/17/2017 Arena Naucalpan
1) Fly Tiger & Puma de Oro vs Bambino & Satana X
2) Blue Monsther, Shadow Boy, Voltar vs Atomic Star, Guerrero 2000, Picudo Jr.
3) Acero & Kanon vs Máquina Infernal & Takle
4) Hijo del Alebrije, Mike, Teelo vs Lunatik Xtreme, Skanda, Vortiz
5) Ángel Oriental, Aramis, Black Dragón, Demonio Infernal, Diablo Jr., Kanon, Keiser Drago, Power Bull vs Aspirantito Jr., Boxter, Fandango, Kilvan, Kronoz, Toxin, Tromba, Yoruba [Copa Higher Power]
Gym Fill (Black Terry) vs Gym Lucha Libre Boom (Fantasma de la Opera)

Lucha Libre Boom is running here on Friday, so their students stop by a couple days early for a trainee show.  LLB running on Friday also means it’s a three show week for Naucalpan (or quite a while before a normal IWRG show, since the Super Astro show is on the 24th.)

RIOT (SAT) 05/20/2017 Arena Femenil, Monterrey, Nuevo León
1) Psicótico vs Muerte Extrema
2) Chik Tormenta vs Christi Jaynes
3) Dowki, Kaientai, Lord Byron vs Erick Ortiz, Kamikaze, Kratoz
4) Fly Warrior vs Dralion
5) Low Rider & Sammy Guevara vs Dulce Kanela & Larry Miranda Jr.
6) Flamita vs Último Ninja

Final lineup for the RIOT show next Saturday. I really want to see the main event. Not enough to actually go to Monterrey, but I’d still like to see it.

CMLL (SAT) 05/20/2017 Arena Coliseo
1) Acero & Stukita vs Pequeño Universo 2000 & Pequeño Violencia
2) Leono, Príncipe Diamante, Sangre Imperial vs Canelo Casas, Nitro, Templario
3) Estrellita, La Vaquerita, Sanely vs La Comandante, La Seductora, Metálica
4) Drone, Fuego, Rey Cometa vs Hechicero, Luciferno, Niebla Roja
5) La Máscara, Pierroth, Rush vs Ángel de Oro, Stuka Jr., Valiente [Relevos Increíbles]

Niebla Roja teamed up with non Guerrero rudos, but his issues seem to be more with being a rudo than being a Guerrero, so that’ll probably go no differently. Is Leono the second best wrestler in the segunda?

CMLL (SUN) 05/21/2017 Arena México
1) Bengala & Fiero vs Cholo & Yago
2) Flyer, Magia Blanca, Robin vs Cancerbero, Espanto Jr., Raziel
3) Oro Jr., Pegasso, Soberano Jr. vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón
4) Johnny Idol, Stuka Jr., Valiente vs Cavernario, Kráneo, Sam Adonis
5) Atlantis, Carístico, Marco Corleone vs Gran Guerrero, Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero

Fiero & Yago’s are in the One Match A Month club, which probably doesn’t work out for them so well.

Every match on this show is technically a first time ever match, but CMLL’s done an outstanding job of making everyone feel about the same so it comes off as a card we’ve seen many times before.

Lucha Memes (SUN) 05/21/2017 Coliseo Coacalco, Coacalco, Estado de México

4) Silueta vs Marcela
5) Arez, Belial, Impulso vs Black Dragón, Demonio Infernal, Dragón
6) Aramis vs Star Jr.
7) Keira & Lady Maravilla vs Alas de Acero & Iron Kid
8) Hechicero vs Solar I

This seems to have less big outside names than usual, so it might be a smaller turnout, but Eterno/Komander, Aramis/Star, Hechicero/Solar and the trios match all look interesting.

CMLL (SUN) 05/21/2017 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Avispón Negro Jr. & Capitán Cobra vs Destello & Quca
2) El Alteño & Fantástico vs Guerrero de la Muerte & Mr. Apolo
3) Tigre Blanco vs Linterna [lightning]
4) Cosmos, Metatrón, Neutrón vs León Blanco, Ráfaga, Relámpago Azul
5) Joker, Star Black, Vaquero Jr. vs Explosivo, Nautilius, Sádico

The main event must be an unlisted Relevos Increíbles match or a lot of turns went down tonight. Linterna/Tigre Blanco matched up in the segunda, so something probably did go down with them.

Soberano new champ, La Llave de la Gloria

Soberano tornillo

6) Atlantis, Diamante Azul, Stuka Jr. b La Máscara, Pierroth, Rush 2017-05-12 CMLL Claro (posted by thecubsfan)
14:14. Tecnicos took 1/3, the first by excessive violence DQ (maybe?), Atlantis submitted Rush cleanly in the third.

The title match achieved what it was set to do. I’m not sure if anything else had a purpose. CMLL may yet end up doing Atlantis/Rush, but it definitely come off as if it was the anniversary match in the building on this show. This show was rather long, with everything over 12 minutes and the title match (likely close to 20 if it aired complete) much longer than a lightning match would be. It felt long.

The link up there will take you to Rey Cometa’s entrance, but I couldn’t figure out how to remove the seven minute stretch of dead stream. You’ll want to skip ahead to 1:25:09.

Shocker returns tonight after five months to main event in Arena Coliseo. He teams with Ultimo Guerrero & Mephisto versus Atlantis, Caristico and Angel de Oro.

AAA’s Llave de la Gloria tryout took place today. They posted video of the matches on Facebook: women’s group 1women’s group 2, and women’s group 3, plus men’s group 1, men’s group 2, men’s group 3, men’s group 4.

There appeared to be 15 women, at least when they got to the match part. 10 of them were from the WWS luchadora promotion, including their champion Diosa Atenea. Muneca de Plata, one of Super Porky’s daughters, is trying out and is part of the third women’s group. She actually worked AAA spots shows way back when Porky was working for AAA, as was in the third group. Stephanie Vaquer from Chile, who’s wrestled in Veracruz and around Mexico City, is in the first group. There’s a blond woman in red and gold who’s in the first match and gets brought back to round out the third one; she seems to have potential and has a marketable look. There’s also a luchadora in a cool mask who takes a dropkick to the face like a champ and was trying rope walk/rope bounce armdrags at the end; she appears to be Hahastary, who mostly wrestles in northern Mexico.

The men’s matches are all 2v2. Angelikal is the standout performer in the first match, and of all the men today really. Taylor Wolf, who’s been in IWRG recently and is from Chile, is in the second group. There’s an amateur wrestler gimmick luchador in the third match who stands out, and the fourth match has a tag team that I can’t place.

The trainers today are La Parka, Averno, Hijo del Fantasma, Super Fly, Ayako Hamada, Mamba, Mary Apache and Faby Apache. Vampiro, who was the lead guy in the past two tryouts, is over in Germany for a LU themed WXW show. The Lucha Underground wrestlers (or maybe the cross promotion they’re getting with the TV network which airs LU) helped them what they claimed was the biggest indie crowd in 15 years. Vampiro posted his entrance on YouTube, which he says is a preview of a TV show (or channel?) he’s launching on May 31st.

On that same WXW show, Angelico picked up the WXW Shotgun Championship.

The price for the AAA Ring & Rock Stars travel package is 11,291 Mexico Pesos ($600 USD on the nose.) That includes flights from Mexico City, and 4 days/3 nights at the resort.

ESPN has a story on the Freedom Bar & Grill, with unnamed fans complaining it’s going to attract the wrong crowd to wrestling shows (fancy rich people who don’t really care about the lucha.) The director of Freedom disagreed, making the case that it’s in the same range as the ringside tickets if you get food. They note that beer sales are supposed to be cut off in the arena by the main event, but they are not cut off in the restaurant and you are allowed to stay an hour after the show ends (and enter two hours early.)

Dr. Wagner is off the Lucha Libre Boom show in Naucalpan next Friday. AAA’s got him in Tijuana instead. LA Park & Hijo de LA Park will now face Caristico & Black Taurus.

Here’s a social media thing – kerfuffle? let’s go with kerfuffle – boiled down to a quick two links. Garza Jr. teases Pagano as being on the 07/09 Llaves y Candados show. Pagano says he still is with AAA. I suspect the answer is that Llaves y Canados show isn’t having Rebelion guys.

MDA in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara on 06/18

AAA writes about La Parka and Joaquin Roldan being inducted into the Toluca sports hall of fame.

AS Mexico ranks the top 11 Mexican luchador of all time.

ESPN interviews Princesa Sugehit about being a woman in wrestling and Lil Cholo about being a journeyman of wrestling.

Lineups

CMLL (FRI) 05/19/2017 Arena México
1) Magnus & Sensei vs Akuma & Espíritu Negro
2) La Jarochita, Princesa Sugehit, Silueta vs Amapola, Dalys, Zeuxis
3) Drone, Guerrero Maya Jr., Stuka Jr. vs Bobby Villa, Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora
4) Titán vs Cavernario [lightning]
5) Ángel de Oro, Atlantis, Valiente vs Gran Guerrero, Niebla Roja, Último Guerrero
6) Carístico, Máximo Sexy, Mistico vs Ephesto, Mephisto, Negro Casas

Will Niebla Roja finally be done teaming with people he doesn’t want to team with after this show? Probably not. Usual show of a couple matches which might be good (Cavernario is Titan’s best opponent) and no sense of direction.
