What Happened:

Misterioso & Sagrado take out Fuego

Cavernario fouled Cometa to end their singles match. It seemed more out of frustration in his inability to win than trying to cheat.

Blue Panther & Ripper feuded!

There’s no sound for the first two falls of the main event; they turned it down for the commercial and didn’t remember to turn it back up.

That’s about it.

Review:

Titan hands tope con giro

The singles match is the match to watch, a match near the level of their most recent Tuesday title match and a step above the Cometa/Soberano title match. It’s tense match feeling more like a fight with a lot at stake, and Cavernario brings the aggressiveness that’s not normally found in a tecnico/tecnico match. This was more about trying to win than the show off match on Friday. It felt like Cometa was barely getting in anything against his savage opponent, and Cavernario was increasingly frustrated at not being able to put Cometa away until he broke. The finish worked well for the context even if it is a let down from what the match could be. I suspect they just didn’t want Cometa to lose two singles matches in a week, and I hope they didn’t beat Cavenrario either because he’s going after Soberano next. That’s going to be similarly great when it happens, and helpful for Soberano to keep growing.

The tercera trios match was the best of the rest of the matches. The quick first fall actually worked here, giving the match an energy boost compared to the slow starting the rest of the night. (AAA almost always has hot starts, CMLL almost always has cold starts, both could use more mixing.) They kept up good pace and had some good action thru the match. Blue Panther Jr. looked better than usual, and Ripper & Panther bringing back the feud CMLL’s bookers forgot was a nice nod in a promotion where most of those things just get dropped after three weeks. This wasn’t the best match I’ve seen or anything, but we’d be a lot happier if this kind of match was the baseline instead of the B-show exception.

American Mutilation

Everyone hit their marks in the main. There’s rarely any sloppiness in the show ending matches and there wasn’t really in this one either, but they can’t help but feel more like a choreographed action adventure stage show with no weight too it. It’s less a fight, more Marvel Heroes doing one of their three shows a day at Six Flags. It’s good for their target audience, it’s just disappointing not to be the target.

Bengala seemed excited in the opener. He was the only one. Of all the possible highspots in the second match, Pequeno Nitro doing a plancha to the floor would not have been my pick. Hechicero claimed Virus knew more holds than him when talking about the tercera. Hechicero has done fine in his first times as guest commentator the last couple of weeks; he tends to speak in paragraphs as always, but he comes off like he knows he what he’s talking about and is interested in the action.

Cavernario turns it around quick

CMLL firings, Rush/Niebla feuding in Puebla, DragonMania

CMLL Firings

CMLL official fired La Mascara, Maximo Sexy and Bobby Villa on Monday. CMLL didn’t announce a reason, but it’s understood it’s due to their roles in destroying Ultimo Guerrero’s car. Bobby Villa had not previously been connected to this situation in any way, but he was off of Friday’s CMLL show and replaced by Sagrado. CMLL probably knew something, but no one’s said what happened with him and he claimed not to know when asked by +Lucha. (Villa also claimed to only know he had been fired when he read about it on Facebook.)

CMLL affirmed that Nitro will be head of the union at this time, and an election to determine a new leader will be held in December.

CMLL says the CMLL heavyweight and CMLL light heavyweight championships are now vacant, and will be filled in upcoming tournaments. CMLL’s title situation revolves around having exactly 16 (healthy) champions for the Universal tournament, which means those titles will have to go to people who are not current champions.

The firing and video got picked up by pretty much every news outlet which covers sports in Mexico. No one seemed to have any more information than what was announced in the press release but everyone’s heard that part of the story.

AAA has made no statement on Psycho Clown being involved, and Psycho Clown continues to wrestle all his normal dates, including in Morelos on Sunday.

Angel de Oro & Barbaro Cavernario replace La Mascara & Maximo tonight at Arena Coliseo Guadalajara. That’s the last CMLL regular booking they have, but they are booked on indie shows which look like they were done thru CMLL. They’re scheduled to team in the main event a Vamper Crew show in Atizapan on Thursday. Maximo is on a show in Mexico City on Sunday and the Toryumon Mexico show on Saturday. La Mascara is scheduled to be on Tijuana on Saturday. They’ll probably be missing all of those dates.

Dragon Rojo says he and Polvora will continue as Los Revolucionarios without a third member for at least the immediate future.

Cavernario is now the Peste Negra member teaming with Rush & Pierroth on Friday’s main event. I think CMLL belatedly recalled Niebla & Rush were in the middle of a feud here and made the change. Not that CMLL is totally on the ball: they kept running the ad for Friday with Maximo involved, something that no one would’ve missed if they just didn’t show it.

Today’s CMLL show is the usual group of random matches. Drone/Distubrio is the lightning match, Atlantis, Marco, Titan versus Hechicero, Rey Bucanero and Terrible. There’s no feud carrying over from last week and they might insta-make one to set up a match.

Rey Misterio Jr. will help wave the green flag for the Baja 500 race on June 3rd in Ensenada. That’s the car race El Rey is scheduled to air, so that’s probably the connection.

Ultimo Guerrero, Mistico, Atlantis and Rey Bucanero will represent CMLL on ROH/RevPro shows on August 18, 19, and 20th in the UK. Atlantis & Rey Bucanero are going to have tougher times fitting in on that sort of show.

AAA hyped Verano de Escandalo as a show where someone will lose their hair and someone will lose their mask. Vampiro corrected AAA’s Twitter, saying some masks will be lost. Does that mean AAA is not doing a Mamba/Pimpinela hair match? Does it mean multiple people will be losing their masks in the main event? Will there be some other mask match? I think these are all good questions which won’t be answered because even the people trying to promote AAA’s upcoming shows apparently have no idea what matches are actually going to take place. Maybe only Vampirio knows. Heck of a way to promote a wrestling company.

Flamita will face Mark Andrews in the first round of Progress Wrestling’s Super Strong Style 16 on May 17th in London.

GALLI says they’re no longer working with Triton. I suspect this means he’s not going to be in the US long term.

SuperLuchas catches up with the two winners of a car raffle back in the early 90s: a 12 year old who won the fan contest, and El Indominto won the luchador contest. (They both ended up selling the car with in a couple years.)

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report, an article on the firings, and this week’s Poster-Mania.

The new +Lucha podcast has Black Warrior, Cibernetico and Monster Clown as guests.

CultIcon has his top 10 picks for next CMLL heavyweight champion.

05/23 NJPW: Dragon Lee defeated Ricochet

That’s another big win, and one I didn’t exactly expect. Dragon Lee leads his block at 3-1, and is going to to have a commanding lead if he can beat Will Ospready in his next match on the 26th.  Volador has Desperado on the 25th, which should be fun.

Lineups

Toryumon Mexico (SAT) 05/27/2017 Arena México
1) Blood Eagle, Fidel, Labernito vs Adrian Quest, Dicky Mayer, Eli Everfly
2) Mima Shimoda & Vanilla Vargas vs India Sioux & Reina Isis
3) Súper Ciudadano vs Patán, Fiero, El Gallo, Silver Star, OT Fernandez, Piel Roja, Hijo del Signo, Villano III Jr., Malefico [Dragon Scramble]
4) Daisuke Hanaoka & Douki vs Bodyguard & Zeus

6) Marco Corleone & Máximo Sexy vs Rey Bucanero & Último Guerrero
7) Carístico, Jun Akiyama, Último Dragón vs Joe Doering, Mephisto, Sam Adonis

This is the announced lineup for Saturday’s Dragonmania show, but it’s expected Maximo won’t be in that match. No wonder Douki is just posting all his workout/lifting info on Twitter lately, he’s got to get himself big to face that team. This may turn up on SamuraiTV.

CMLL (MON) 05/29/2017 Arena Puebla
1) Asturiano & Zaeta Roja vs Guerrero Espacial & Rey Apocalipsis
2) Black Tiger & Espíritu Maligno vs Ares & Metálico

4) Stigma, Stuka Jr., Valiente vs Cuatrero, Máscara Año 2000, Sansón
5) Rush vs Mr. Niebla
6) Ángel de Oro, Mistico, Niebla Roja vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero

Rush seemed into the feud with Mr. Niebla this week. Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja are going to be moving up if they’re facing the Guerreros.

I recorded AAA, but the recording skips around at points like last week and I don’t think there’s a point in putting it up like that. The AYM feed was down on Monday for the second IWRG show.

como estaz 4×13: car vandalism edition

There’s only one rule on this podcast: whenever two main eventers and one Bobby Villa get fired, we’ll get around to doing a podcast again. (There are actually many rules.) Rob and I go over the saga of Ultimo Guerrero’s blue mustang for an hour, recapping what we know and what we think it might mean. (Something finally broke well for AAA? Kinda?) The back half of the show includes a discussion of our level of Lucha Underground excitement (spoiler: mild), the billion angles going on in AAA at once, and the disappointing lack of progress in indie footage availability.

I accidentally dropped a Lucha Underground spoiler in that discussion; I edited it out, but you do get to hear me talking about having to edit it out. It’s safe but you can yell at me later.

CMLL Puebla: 2017-05-15

maybe just let go

Mephisto © defeated Negro Casas to keep the CMLL World Welterweight Championship (11:23 [2:28, 2:01, 6:54], 1/3, via VideosOficialesCMLL, good)

What Happened:

Casas took a big superplex too

Mephisto kept the CMLL Welterwieght championship in the main event.

Mr. Niebla bumped into Pompin in the third fall in the semifinal, and Rush wasted no time in fouling him. Rush otherwise wrestled the match in his tecnico persona – still antagonistic to the crowd, but getting along fine with his teammates. Niebla & Rush teased a match post match but weren’t given a microphone to do so.

As usual, Niebla Roja didn’t want to use rudo tactics and didn’t get along with his partners. He still ended up unmasking Angel de Oro at the end, which set up a rematch for the following week. It seemed more like they were setting up a match with Niebla Roja & Angel de Oro at this point rather than a team.

Thoughts:

Rey Samuray ramp springboard armdrag

The title match was fun for seeing Negro Casas in a title match environment Mephisto was no different than usual, just moving from one usual big move to check it off his list, but Casas brought some good energy and emotion that made it feel more than just a recitation of routine spots. He probably doesn’t need to take a Super Devil’s Wings at his age but more credit for him doing it. Hijo del Signo, as Casas’ second, seemed to be more into this match than any of his own.

The rest of the matches were completely forgettable B-show stuff. Rey Samuray looked good in his match, but there’s nothing interesting about the rest of this show.

maybe no more Pompin ref bumps

This Memes show seemed a little lost in the attention for the Puebla show in a couple weeks – I blanked on mentioning it on Saturday – but they seemed to have drawn a nice crowd for the show. Hechicero/Solar sounds like the match of the night, though probably in a very specific style.

IWRG (SUN) 05/21/2017 Arena Naucalpan [+LuchaTV, Estrellas del Ring, The Gladiatores]
1) Atomic Star b Keiser Drago
2) Shaolin b Lunatic Xtreme
3) Oficial AK47 & Oficial Fierro b Apolo Estrada Jr. & Eterno
Eterno replaced Apolo Estrada Jr. (and so they were back together as Los Insoportables.)
4) Villano III Jr. b Aramis
5) Cerebro Negro, Heddi Karaoui, Hijo de Pirata Morgan b Black Dragón, Dinamic Black, Veneno
6) Dr. Cerebro b Freelance
7) Danny Casas, Imposible, Mr. Electro b Black Warrior, Trauma I, Trauma II
Team Imposible took 2/3 (and worked as tecnicos.) Imposible submitted Trauma II. He was not the captain, but Black Warrior was annoyed about Trauma II losing and attacked his partners, allowing himself to get beat.

Imposible ended up very bloody in the main event before winning anyway.

On his podcast, Dave Meltzer said he was told La Mascara has only been suspended at this point, not fired. There’s no other update on the situation. CMLL has made no card changes and said nothing about what occurred so far.

La Mascara was scheduled to appear on tonight’s show in Arena Puebla. He probably won’t be there. Rush & Pierroth will team with someone else to take on Marco, Mascara 2000 and Mr. Niebla, in what seemed to be setting up Rush/Niebla match. The main event has the Guerreros taking on Atlantis, Mistico and Valiente in what should be a quick tecnico showcase. Niebla Roja is listed on the rudo side in the tercera, so he’ll probably end betraying Dragon Rojo & Polvora tonight and at Angel de Oro’s side at the end of the match. The show has a women’s match (no Zeuxis) and a locals + Camorra opener. The show will air at 9pm on YouTube.

Elsehwere in Puebla, Toro Bill Jr. and Rey Apocalipsis ended up feuding and ripping each other’s masks in the main event of the Promolucha show on Saturday. They both appear to still be rudos, but just feuding ones. Whoever’s in charge of booking the Puebla guys onto the Monday show must be aware of what’s going on (so someone local), since they stopped teaming on those shows a few weeks ago, but the Batilon del Muerte seems no more.

There’s really no reason to show the trailer for Friday’s show – no one will miss it, it has Maximo in it – but they show it every week so I wonder if they’ll just show it anyway.

Kevin Kross beat Dr. Wagner in Tijuana in a tag match with Ayako Hamada and Kobra Moon. Kross snuck in a foul to win. Octagoncito wrestled under that name, then ran in later as Mini Rey Misterio.

Estrellita is listed on a Cholo de Tijuana show in Acapulco on May 31st, but says she will not be working that show.

(Via R de Rudo) A group of pranksters made a compilation video of them tricking people into standing still for a selfie picture with one person, then having other people run in from behind to either throw a bucket of water on them, or to kiss them if it was a woman. La Hiedra was one of the woman who was kissed, and she isn’t happy about it. This video comes off less like hilarious pranks and more like them being jerks; the bits where they just walk by people and squirt something at them comes off as cruel.

Lucha Libre in Japan

Catching up:

05/20 NJPW: Ryusuke Taguchi b Volador Jr.
05/21 NJPW
: Taichi b Dragon Lee
05/22 NJPW
: Yoshinobu Kanemaru b Volador Jr.

That’s a bad run. Volador is 1-2, Dragon Lee is 2-1. It’s hard to advance with 2 losses and it’s pretty much impossible to do so with three, so Volador would have to win all his remaining matches to make it to the final. (It’s probably not happening.)
