What happened: Averno & Chessman got a cheap victory over the Apaches yet again. The slight difference this time it was the Xinetez who helped them, either turning back rudo or remaining rudo the entire time but having a mystery plan. Aerostar & Super Fly were the final two in a cage match and will meet at Rey de Reyes in a mask/hair match.
AAA did their best to edit Daga out from existence in the cage match.
There’s a tremendous amount of time spent on video packages to start the show and a replay the Psycho/Wagner press conference. If you’re not interested in all of that, you need to
What was good: Both matches were better than expected but neither was satisfying.
Where can I watch it: It’s on AAA’s channel.
The show opens with a history of AAA video package on the big screen. It then follows with the normal AAA opening banner big show opening. And then there’s another 25th Anniversary video package. And then a video package on setting up the Wagner/Psycho mask match at last year’s TripleMania. And then there’s a really brief shot of the fire spot from Heroes Inmortales and Goya’s turn.
The ring is a six sided ring. There’s also a new entrance set, where the entire entrance way is the video board. They’ve got a small ramp, instead of the stairs which used to bedevil Cibernético. Crowd is loud (almost suspiciously so; they react far louder to Carta Brava leaving a cage than you’d expect.) The building is more brightly lit than in the past in this arena. The announcers have a new custom AAA announce desk and many of the wrestlers have new videos. (They must be recent, because Suicide has a lot of unmasked footage.)
Match 1: Faby Apache & Mary Apache vs Averno & Chessman
Gimnasio Olímpico Juan de la Barrera, Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal, 01/20/2017
Video: Estrellas del Ring, RUDO VISION, thecubsfan
Winner: OgT (Averno pin Faby)
Match Time: 8:11
Notes: OGT have new music, which sounds like an OGT rap song. They attack the Apaches on the way to the ring. Hijo del Tirantes is with the OGT, but both he and Copetes are outside the ring referees while Piero is inside the ring referee. Three referees doesn’t change this from being a two on one beatdown. The Apaches make a really great comeback, get a near fall, and then Piero is taken out by a Chessman dropkick. Apaches immediately get finishing holds, but Tirantes is the legal referee. He gets Averno and Chessman under the ropes. Piero bizarrely rolls out of the ring and walks to the back instead of returning to the match like a normal situation. The Apaches rally back, with Mary taking Chessman out with a dive. Faby’s left alone with Averno (and Hijo del Tirantes) when the Xinetez walk out. Averno is sure they’re after him, but Zorro hits Tirantes with the cane instead. Zorro tosses his cane to Faby, who goes to hit Averno, but Escoria takes take cane away and Scoria hits Faby with his own cane. Averno is confused, but covers Faby, ad third referee Copetes comes into count the pin. The Xinetez roll Faby out and beat her up three on one. (Chessman rolls in, Mary is hiding off camera.) Xinetez threatens OGT with a big price for their help. Averno & Chessman look confused, but celebrate their win.
Review: [ok] hey, this was the really hot straight up Chessman/Averno vs Faby/Mary match I thought they could have at TripleMania for about five minutes. Everyone was moving around fast, the rudos making the técnicos big moves look great, nice build to the finish. Everything that I dislike and have no interest in about this story started as soon as Piero got bumped, so I suggest you stop watching at the moment and you’ll have seen a pretty good short match. The rest, with three referees and a swerve run in that purposely makes no sense, is as dumb as the rest. It felt like the write off for the Apaches and moving the feud back to a (unpalatable rudo vs rudo) OGT/Xinetez issue, but future cards suggest that isn’t happening yet. They’re really got destroyed again though.
Noti AAA is a recap of the Wagner/Psycho press conference.
Match 2: Aerostar & Súper Fly vs Argenis, Australian Suicide, Angélico, Carta Brava Jr., Daga in a cage match
Gimnasio Olímpico Juan de la Barrera, Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal, 01/20/2017
Video: Estrellas del Ring, RUDO VISION, thecubsfan
- Carta Brava Jr. escapes (3:34)
- Argenis escapes (5:35)
- Angelico escapes (6:56)
- Daga escapes (8:10)
- Australian Suicde escapes (8:58)
Losers: Super Fly & Aerostar
Match Time: 8:58
Notes: AAA shows the first six guys entering, goes to break, and then shows the match. They very specifically cut out Daga adding himself to the match. He’s shown only coming in the door from far away as the match starts. This plan is someone submarined by Arturo Rivera going crazy for Daga in the match early on. There is another edit later on, focusing on Angelico walking away (with ‘new’ audio to focus on that) instead of showing Daga leaving. Jesus is handing the audio alone at this point, and all the way thru Suicide leaving and Daga trying to stop him from the outside. It’s very obvious when they go back to the old audio. Angelico, Carta Brava, and Argenis all end up on the side of the cage with Suicide, fighting each off. Suicide waits for them to get set on the floor, shakes his head a bit, and then does a crazy spinning dive onto all four (and the barricade)
Aerostar & Super Fly bleed. Carta Brava fouls Argenis and escapes before him, which may be a future plot point based on taping results. Tecnicos fight among themselves, including, Suicide & Angelico fight for no real reason. Angelico later tosses Argenis to the cage, which is probably supposed to be offense but simply helps him escape. They play his music, because only two are left in the ring and I guess he wins. A bloody Super Fly unmasks Aerostar inside the cage and continues to stomp him. Super Fly only leaves the cage so he can tell the announcers he’s going to win Aerostar’s mask. Argenis helps Aerostar out of the cage and gets him a new mask, only for Aerostar to charge Super fly and get mask taking away too.
Review: [ok] they did an interesting thing here, compared to normal lucha cage matches, where they worked it more like a multiman singles match. Two guys doing big spots, and everyone playing dead at edge of the cage instead of outside the ring. It gave better action than the usual mosh pit of bodies with no room to do anything at the normal start of a lucha match, even if it meant things slowed down once there were fewer people to get it going. They also tried to alleviate the issue of not having a normal ending to this match by making the Suicide big dive the ending. This gimmick match doesn’t really work for me, but they put more thought and effort into it than usual and I can see people appreciating it more than I did.
