  • Dark Ozz & Low Rider vs Fénix (AAA) & Máscarita Dorada, Gran Plaza, Fort Worth, Texas, 08/06/2016

This started out as “main CMLL stuff I wanted to cross off my list, even if it wasn’t going to be MOTYC”, with the idea idea I’d watch the full 09/17 show I had attended live to rate it. After watching the one match I liked the best and not liking it as much on TV, I abadoneded that idea and just worked thru a couple of other matches.

Down to just four matches after. Might look around for a couple more things to round up the list, but this is about done.

Review: [good] There’s no great reason for me to watch this. It’s simply here because I missed it earlier in the year and it bugged me enough to go back to still seek it out four months later. Jarochita is a tecnica after this match and it’s hard to figure out why. She shows more personality here than in the rest of the match, even when she’s just doing an Eddie Guerrero homage bit. (Though, she should still be able to find some of it on the tecnicas side doo.) Jarochita and Sanely also work much smoother together than you’d expect. Everyone works really hard in this match for a crowd that’s half filling in and mostly not interested, they work at a fast pace because of the time and the only real obvious flaw is when Estrellita moves into position for her dive a spot or two ahead of time. Not worth seeking out this late after but better than a lot of stuff on this legends show.

Review: [good] Mostly rewatching this whole show for this match, which seemed like a great one live and is a little less so on TV. I’m not sure if something was missed the second time, or if it just feels slower on TV in the third fall. There’s still a lot of action and fast sequenes, just not as many as it felt like in the building. Hechicero rebuonding from slipping on his springboard to holding Titan up one one arm on a suplex is still a pretty good recovery. He blended in well with Puma & Tiger, and the three random técnicos kept the match going on their side well.

Review: [below average] not near as bad as I imagined it was when I heard the reports on this match (and that’s why it’s even on this list), but the rookies did look as bad as expected. Everything seemed to be moving very fast for Marvel, who looked awful in the second fall and had Nitro very visibly siganling every move before it happened in the third fall. Coyote & Grako nearly took each other out try for a trip in the second fall. Magnus looked sharp and Nitro was actually helpful for once, but this wasn’t any good (yet not the total disaster that would’ve ben more intersting.)

    • Mouse Trap Trauma II (1:57)
  2. Traumas

    • Trauma II Lo Negro de Negro Puma (4:18)
  3. Traumas
    • DQ Tiger [mask pull on Trauma II] (4:15)

Winner: Traumas
Match Time: 10:30
Notes: This was edited. Trauma II fouled Tiger as Tiger unmasked Trauma II. Maya missed it, evaluated the situation and gave the win to Trauma II

Review: [good] At this point, I’m too lazy to get the videos from Black Terry Jr. and try watching them on other feeds. It’s a terrible decision. We’re back to a grainy cell phone video shot too close to make out half the match, with random editing just because. This match still seem liked it was decently fun, even with requite the “CMLL on indies lame finish”. It didn’t break any new ground and was more a Traumas style brawl than a fast series of sequences more the Casas style, but they otherwise meshed well.

El Bandido & Volador Jr. vs Flamita & Fly Warrior
Arena San Juan Pantitlan, Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, Estado de México, 06/24/2016

TVLuchaMundialRicardo Peña

Winner: Volador Jr. & Bandido
Match Time: 11:54
Notes: This appears to be edited a little.

Review: [great] Fantastic match, with nonstop action (and a little bit better fliming) for the entire time it lasted. The lesser heralded partners shine as much as Volador & Flamita. Bandido goes thru the whole match looking sharp, and Fly Warrior had cool moments like the kick fight with Volador. Volador and Flamita aren’t overshadowed (and Flamita’s sell of the reverse huracanana is amazing in particular) but those other guys look on their level and it’s a breakout performance for them. They pack in a lot during this match with guys who aren’t normally working together, and it comes off a lot more smoothly than you’d expect. This is also helped by going one fall instead of splitting and slowing down the action over three. There’s no big structure to the match except escalating violence, but they pull it off well. You should go track down a better version of this match, it’s definitely worth your time.

  3. técnicos
    • Máscarita Dorada satellite armbar Low Rider (3:31)
    • (no other pinfall)

Winner: técnicos (2/3)
Match Time: 11:14

Review: [ok] I picked this match because Máscarita & Fenix seemed entertainingly odd and I was curious to see what Ozz looked after disappearing for a few years. One of those overpowered the other. Ozz seems in great shape, but he was not at all interested in doing anything here. He might have been put off by having to wrestle a mini, because he went out of his way to humiliate Dorada early on, but it’s not like he was trying that much harder with Fenix. When Ozz tries to hit Dorada with the fall sign, and the resulting empty blow causes laughter, you know it’s going poorly. Dorada then landed leg first on Ozz’s head on the moonsault, so it wasn’t going well either way. Low Rider is great with Máscarita in the third fall, and it’s a shame they didn’t focus in more on him. The third fall (18:20 in) is about three minutes of really good action, but nothing so spectacular to make this worthwhile.
