What happened: La Mascara & Super Crazy left Dragon Lee & Rey Bucanero humiliated.
What was good: You should go out of your way to see Soberano vs Hechicero. Nothing else was really that great.
Where can I watch it: In theory, the main event is on Claro’s website, but they messed up and only put up the post match replays (again). I’ll have the show up no later than Tuesday.
Match 1: Sensei & Starman vs Disturbio & Sangre Azteca
Arena México, 08/26/2016
- rudos
- Sangre Azteca estacas aztecas Sensei (6:56)
- Disturbio front backbreaker Starman (7:18)
- técnicos
- Starman Schwein Disturbio (2:55)
- Senseilock on Sangre Azteca (2:55)
- rudos
- Disturbio double knee smash Starman (3:11)
- Sangre Azteca powerbomb Sensei (3:36)
Winner: rudos (2/1)
Match Time: 13:49
Review: [below average] a completely forgettable match. Crowd didn’t want anything to do with his match from the moment it started and were not proven wrong. Starman, Sensei and Sangre were colorless and low speed. Disturbio tried to be entertaining thru comedy (though they were just pulling off old bits he’d done before), but it didn’t really matter much.
Match 2: Blue Panther Jr., Fuego, The Panther vs Fujin, Okumura, Raijin
Arena México, 08/26/2016
- rudos
- Okumura wheelbarrow DDT Fuego (4:18)
- técnicos
- The Panther double springboard dropkick Okumura (3:16)
- rudos
- Fujin Falcon Arrow The Panther (5:45)
- Raijin Shock Arrow Blue Panther Jr. 1742
Winner: rudos (1/3)
Match Time: 13:19
Review: [ok] Not as good as other matches these teams have had; first couple falls were less active than usually and they didn’t totally redeem it. The finish was a little odd too; not totally sure if Raijin couldn’t get the Shock Arrow the first time or they meant to block it and come back to it. The stacked up superplex took forever to get set up this time, which made seeing as usual even more of an annoyance. Fuego appeared to get lost. The good points were The Panther picked up a new move and Fujin being a tremendous heel character. Raijin isn’t bad at it, but Fujin is much expressive and reactive of the two.
Match 3: Soberano Jr. vs Hechicero in a lightning match
Arena México, 08/26/2016
Winner: Hechicero (jumping corner knee strike)
Match Time: 9:20
Review: [great] Tremendously fun lightning match. They were entertaining even while leaving a lot of the signature stuff in the bag; neither man even did their big spinning move (no conjuro, no tornillo). They just brought other spots, and a lot of ideas. The opening mat sequence was so good, building slow and working creative sequences. Hechicero took most of the match overall, but Soberano still got plenty of showcase moments and felt close to winning at times. Hechicero did a much better job taking those big moves than most CMLL rudos, and then destroyed Soberano. The powerbomb reversal out of the armbar looked huge, and adding the warlock hand waves prior to the knee smash gave it a bit added drama. It also moved the kneesmash from a move that looks good a lot but doesn’t mean much to one that can actually win a match for Hechicero going forward. I’d love to see these guys matched up more often (and Hechicero back to making TV more often; if he’s been missing it due to injury, he didn’t look it here.)
Match 4: Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Rey Bucanero vs Golden Magic, Sharlie Rockstar, Súper Crazy
Arena México, 08/26/2016
- Team Super Crazy
- Super Crazy sunset flip Rey Bucanero (0:44)
- Team Rey Bucanero
- Euforica Special on Sharlie Rockstar (2:20)
- Gran Guerrero Pulpo Guerrero Golden Magic (2:21)
- Team Super Crazy
- Sharlie Rockstar El Pozo Gran Guerrero (4:45)
- Rey Bucanero small package Sharlie Rockstar (6:00)
- Super Crazy barrel roll cradle Rey Bucanero 1529
Winner: Team Super Crazy (1/3)
Match Time: 9:05
Review: [ok] Not nearly as hot as the last few matches, with both main guys moving slow and not impressing. Crazy was not great, but this was a poor Bucanero night. This crowd didn’t really care about this match as much as past ones too, even when Super Crazy went strongly heel in the post match. Sharlie also wasn’t as good. Golden Magic mostly made the match worth watching, with some stellar offense against the Guerreros and a tornillo at the close. Hopefully he sticks around whatever happens next.
Match 5: Pierroth, Rey Escorpión, Rush vs Máximo Sexy, Shocker, Terrible in a relevos increíbles match
Arena México, 08/26/2016
- Team Maximo
- DQ Los Ingobenables [ref attack] (2:55)
- Los Ingobernables
- Rush headbutt Shocker (1:49)
- Los Ingobernables
- Pierroth cradle Máximo (8:13)
- Rush cradle Máximo (8:13)
Winner: Los Ingobernables (2/3)
Match Time: 12:57
Máximo accidentally kissed Shocker, lead to both of them being pinned.
Review: [ok] It turns out that Pierroth is a horrible wrestler. Who knew! The dropkick he missed in this match was thoroughly horrible. This was a match where Shocker definitely wasn’t the worst guy, which means we’re in a bad shape. They built most of it around Máximo, and it got over well, and it wasn’t anything they don’t normally do. Maybe they’re going somewhere with Los Ingobernables winning every week, but it’s not going to be good matches.
Match 6: Carístico, Dragón Lee, Mistico vs La Máscara, Negro Casas, Último Guerrero
Arena México, 08/26/2016
- técnicos
- Carístico casita Negro Casas (3:03)
- Mistico La Mistica Ultimo Guerrero (3:03)
- técnicos
- DQ La Mascara [excessive violence] (5:57)
Winner: técnicos (1/2)
Match Time: 8:57
Notes: La Mascara ripped off Dragon Lee’s mask off early, and did it a second time as he was being Dqed.
Review: [ok] There were some crazy impressive spots in this match, but it mostly was just there as a build up to next week’s mask match in the most ordinary way possible. La Mascara didn’t win a fall, but humiliated Dragon Lee repeatedly and left him on the mat covering up to end the show. Their fight clicked better than the hair match feud, but it also seemed like they were holding back for next week (or, it was so La Mascara dominant that we didn’t see much of what Dragon Lee can do.) The other guys stepped up what they could do, with Ultimo Guerrero impressing on the powerbomb to the floor. I wonder if we’ll see that again next week, or if Mistico will bring back the shooting star press. Negro Casas wasn’t in much to tell where he’s at, but it’s nice to see him again. Carístico looked better than in the Super J.
