What happened: Texano & La Parka worked together in the main event and made saves for each other, but still aren’t friends. (Texano has seemingly is now using a spinning side slam for his finish instead of the sit down powerbomb.) Hernandez returned as member of Team Trump, though he didn’t wear the shirt. Averno & Chessman kept the tag team titles over Argenis & Suicide by DQ. They offered an open challenge, the Apaches asked for it, and Averno refused.
What was good: Nothing. I wouldn’t be watching this show right now if I didn’t know that a) people who aren’t around now may be back later on, b) the show is bound to get better at some point, if by random chance than for no other reason and c) I wanted to have some context of what was going on by then. But this was a really lousy show among a stretch of them, and AAA’s goal seem to be something other than “put on a good wrestling show.” It will get better but it’s going to require some patience.

Main event sounds like it was pretty good. This is one night after Black Terry lost his hair to Aeroboy in Tulancingo; he works a hard scheduled for any age. (Black Terry Jr. also has photos of the hair match show.)

Former CMLL luchador Zayco, real name Armando Cota, passed away. There are no details about his death and it’s unclear when he died (this El Dandy Facebook post suggests it may have happened a while ago.) Zayco had survived a previous brush with death when he was stabbed in the back near his home area of Sonora many years ago. Zayco was a lanky iron masked rudo from 2005 to 2014 who never graduated from the early matches and never got to have many career highlights as a result. He’s the son of legendary wrestler Mocho Cota and the brother of occasional AAA luchador Mocha (Tigre) Cota Junior. Zayco also was part of CMLL’s security staff; we see him work an opener and then work security the rest of the show the time we saw him wrestle in Arena Mexico. Zayco’s Facebook indicates his 2014 departure from the ring was due to a knee injury and he had hoped to return – it’s unclear if he changed his mind, or if CMLL just didn’t have a spot for him any longer. It looks like he was still doing security work at least as recent as earlier this year.
Monterrey luchadora Flor de Loto also passed away Saturday. She’d been battling an undisclosed cancer and appeared at at a benefit show for her a couple weeks ago. She’d been a local fixture since the 90s and was wrestling as recent as last fall.
SuperLuchas posted a list of who they believe is in WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic – the 11 names confirmed and the 21 more names they’ve heard or seen rumored. I can’t confirm the list. I know a French website had a similar list earlier in the weekend, though they didn’t have 32. SuperLuchas confirmed Ronnie Mendoza/Jinzo and Zumbi are participating. Mendoza’s name had whispered about participating for a few weeks – he was the guy I was talking about on Twitter around then.
Jinzo’s change to being Ronnie Mendoza might have been inspired by WWE. Chile’s XL, who’s wrestled in Mexico feuding with Super Crazy back in 2012, is listed under his real name of Alejandro Sáez, so maybe WWE’s encouraging them to not use gimmick names. Zumbi, who’s style was said to impress WWE officials, would obviously stick with his gimmick name since he’s masked.
All three guys appear to have connections with Super Crazy. He brought XL to Mexico and seemed to be the conduit for the NOAH/Chile relationship that was going on for a time. He recommended Jinzo for NOAH – the SuperLuchas post tells that story. He might be the guy, or one of the guys, picking the indie talent for Elite, which would be the connection to both Jinzo and Zumbi (who’s quietly vanished from Elite after being a heavily featured guy in the lead up to the TV show.) Super Crazy knows everyone, has been everywhere, and probably is a good guy to keep in touch with if you’re WWE and looking for talent out of areas of the world you’re not as familiar with.
The WON, two weeks ago, had a news bit mentioning WWE bringing in a Mexican for this, but giving him a new look and new name and theorizing it’s because WWE didn’t want anyone to know who he was previously. Meltzer did not know who this was when he wrote the bit, but I had assumed it was Jinzo and he just had a few details wrong. Now, I’m thinking I was wrong – Jinzo doesn’t fit, because he’s been using his new name in Mexico and everyone’s going to know the previous identity of a guy with no mask no matter what name he uses. I’m thinking the item was about a masked guy. This is not simply idle speculation; there’s recent and strong rumors about other Mexican participants who would make news by participating. (Masked Republic also seems to have heard of another Mexican name.)
Other thing: Andrade Almas is on the SuperLuchas list, though WWE noticeably announced him as 210 pounds on Takeover, which would make him too heavy to compete. (He could also reasonably ‘lose’ five pounds before then, but it’s unlikely that number was an accident or done unaware of the announced 205 limit.) I was sure he’d be a favorite to win this when it was announced, now I’m not sure that’s his path at all.
LigerFever has a recap of Konnan’s latest podcast. Konnan’s now saying an anonymous person gave him the Lucha World Cup results, he thought this was a conspiracy plan to by Dorian to make him look bad, but the anonymous person said he got the results from unhappy people in AAA. (On Twitter & Facebook the day of the show, Konnan previously claimed he was actually in the crowd in Puebla under a mask and that’s how he got the results.) Konnan said he shouldn’t have given out the results. This conversation came out one where Konnan revealed AAA/Dorian had sent Konnan documents saying he wasn’t allowed to talk bad about AAA, and Konnan didn’t think much of that. There’s some talk about Rush vs LA Park as the anniversary main event, with Rush losing. Konnan doesn’t think that makes any sense (and neither do I.)

Octagon is the lover of 8 angles, and his partner is Hijo del Octagon but not using that name. Probably legal reasons. CMLL’s not wanted to be Alebrije, Histeria and Psicosis on TV under those name because of legal issues and Elite avoided showing Octagon prior, so there’s a chance that wouldn’t air (and maybe more of the undercard would.) Juvy is calling Hijo del Octagon a fake Octagon on Twitter, is always amusing.

Cometa & Cavernario was very good and worth checking out. It’s amazing to see where Cometa’s gone over the last three or so years; being a talented tecnico who’s not afraid of losing seems to help.
CMLL seems to be setting up a lot of singles matches at once, and they all can’t be happening on 07/01. Depending on how things break down, it might be a situation where the show before or after the iPPV is the better night.

Lucha Underground Executive Produrcer Eric Van Wagenen was on NBC Radio’s Pro Wrestling 24/7 show and mentioned some plans for Lucha Underground’s near future. I (and maybe other people?) had assumed Season 3 wouldn’t be airing until 2017. Van Wagenen says the plan is actually not to have a six month break between seasons and instead come back sometime in the fall with the Season 3, though they don’t have a specific date yet. The overreaching plan going forward is to tape 40 episodes every spring/summer, then tour in the fall, aiming for 2-5K size buildings in market where they think the show would do well.
That’s a big change from where they were around the time of the Austin Warfare show, when the idea was more like a live show once in a blue moon. It didn’t sound like they’d be running every weekend by any means, but he threw out the possibility of a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday schedule. That calendar would also get away from the big issue of this year’s tapings, where they’re so far ahead that Ultima Lucha 3 will tape before Ultima Lucha 2 finishing airing. A Fall to Spring schedule plus a Spring taping schedule means most of the S3 episodes will have aired before they start S4 (and it won’t be as long to S4 – maybe 9 months instead of 12 or 15.)
Lucha Underground tapes tonight and tomorrow night. I saw on Twitter that fans got to the building as early as 6:30 AM to get in line for tickets, only to find other people were already there. I’d suspect it’s only going to get crazier for Ultima Lucha 3 in a couple weeks – there’s rumors about fewer tickets being available to the general public for that show as well. Whatever tickets they are handing out should go out early next week, and will go fast.
CMLL Friday night events are still being listed on Playstation (3&4’s) Live Event Viewer. It’s a strange deal, because they’re asking $10 for something you can see in an internet browser for $0. However, as Carlos pointed out in the comments, that means the 07/01 CMLL iPPV is also only $10 if you buy it thru Playstation, rather than the $15 + fees on Cleeng. You might want to wait until the day of the show just to make sure nothing strange happens, but it’s an easy way to save $5 and get to watch the show on your TV instead of a monitor.
Demus 3:16’s opponent in WWC on 06/25 will be Torito (Mascarita Dorada), which I believe is his first post-WWE appearance. Torito being the mascot for the Matadors is probably the connection.
Weird main event: this seems like the week where Pierroth/La Mascara would have to be signed if it’s happening on 07/01, only La Mascara is facing another Munoz family member instead. Maybe it’ll be an angle.
Valiente doesn’t seem to stand much more of a chance than Stuka just did, but it at least gives the card an interesting match. Cometa & Cavernario face off in the fourth match, as do Sugehit and Zeuxis in the second. It’s odd to see Bucanero and Shocker all the way down in the third, but not the wrong decision.
I’m going to be at AAW when this is happening, so you’ll have to find someone else who’s saved this.

Review: [ok] usual grade, but seemed better than the normal opener from what I saw. Metalico’s comedy stylings working well even when you have the sound off, and his and Akuma’s big moves looked spectauclar. The undercard rudo beatdown segments still don’t have much going on, but I’m wondering if that’s a directive because of how often it is. Star Jr. didn’t get to do a lot in this one either, but looked good in what he did do.

Review: [below average] I had stream issues in the third fall (which looked to be on my side), but I don’t think I would’ve thought much better had I gotten to see the whole thing. This was a lesser version of the usual women’s tag match they had been doing. Lluvia seems to less cool versions of everyone else’s spots. Vaquerita seems to exist to get dropkicked hard by Zeuxis, which is not a fun reason to exist. There were a couple of good Zeuxis spots but not enough reason to spend 15 minutes on this. No real interest in a Sugehit/Zeuxis title match, and the crowd didn’t seem to have much interest in it. Least of the three matches so far.

Review: [below average] Mostly a Pierroth/La Mascara brawl, with the other guys limited to doing not much and not really impressing when they did. (Terrible’s plancha onto Kraneo was nice though.) The only way those two are going to work are going to be taking every shortcut they could, and they used the announce desk and the fouls for that. I just have no use for this. Mascara was still the face this week. Shocker is still over despite not being very good, and both things were evident in this match.

Review: [great] well worked title match, well thought out and with a tone of third fall highlights leading up to the surprise ending. First two falls were calm in terms of spots but good in execution and story building. Cometa seemed in real danger of losing in two straight and it was no simple manner to tie it back up. The third fall had the normal huge spots in CMLL matches, but lots of reversals and left turns when you thought they were going right. It was so much more creative than normal CMLL matches, and they successfully brought the intensity up as they went along. The cavernaria teases at the end were great for people invested in this feud (which not enough of the crowd seemed to be) and Rey Cometa winning with the move himself was a super shock move. The only reason this doesn’t get top grade is we know they have better in them, and they may get to show it again soon. This still was so very good and should be the bar everyone else tries to reach.

Review: [good] This was a nine minute match where Ultimo Guerrero refused to fight for about six of it, and it was still very good. Valiente angirly challenging Ultimo Guerrero and Ultimo Guerrero refusing to even acknowledge him was totally effective, getting the crowd on Valiente’s side and making it big when they finally fought. They gave it plenty of time to play out and sink it, despite the match obviously being designed to be pretty short. Volador and Mistico still got in big spots despite being in the background, and they made you want to see the title match (even though there’s reason to believe it might not be so great.)
This week was not much better than the last one. No wonder I’m behind. I think the Monterrey trios match that I haven’t reviewed yet is probably the best of the weekend, though the AAA’s women tag was really not bad (and the Faby/Mary stuff is the best stuff AAA is doing – they’re very fired up and it’s not great news for the rudas.)

Reviews for Flamita’s debut varied. The Yahoo Deportes & Estrellas del Ring recaps were positive. Alexis said Flamita looked nervous and he’s seen Starman matches better than that – and, if nothing else, that’s going to be my new go to takedown line.
The biggest match on tonight’s CMLL show is Barbaro Cavernario defending the Mexican Welterweight Championship against Rey Cometa in the semifinal. The two had a great feud in 2014, leading to Cavernario winning a hair match on the Anniversario show that year. They rematched in Japan as part of the 2015 FantasticaMania, where Cometa came in with a significantly injured knee and didn’t return to the ring for half a year. Cometa & Cavernario have restarted their feud over the last few months. The trios matches have been good, most everything has been good outside their last Tuesday night lightning. Last week’s match was really good, and there’s high expectations for tonight’s match. The finish isn’t certain: Cometa keeps suggesting having a hair/hair rematch, and he’d need to pick up a meaningful win tonight to make that possible.
The actual main event is the Sky Team versus the Guerreros, with the previews pushing the Guerreros getting back together on a team after being split up for a while. It’s always possible this could be the set up to a trios match, but it couldn’t be on the Gran Prix show since people on both sides are already committed to that match. The fourth match continues the La Mascara/Pierroth issue. With Rush out of action, Pierroth teams with Rey Escorpion & Kraneo to take on La Mascara, Shocker and Terrible. The first half of the card isn’t promising, with a few good wrestlers mixed in with some boring ones. Zeuxis is part of a women’s trios match in the third spot, Virus is part of the segunda, and Star Jr. opens the card teaming with Robin and Akuma & Metalico.
Fuego en el Ring has an interview with Magia Blanca, who’s barely wrestled on CMLL cards since debuting last November. There’s no answer about that but, it seems like the worst situation for him: he had to switch names, but he’s not got a chance to get the new name over.
