CMLL (TUE) 05/31/2016 Arena México [CMLL, thecubsfan, Wrestling With Words]
1) Demus 3:16 & Mercurio b Acero & Aéreo
13:43. Rudos took 1/3.
2) Arkángel de la Muerte, Hijo del Signo, Nitro b Flyer, Magnus, Sensei
16:29. Rudos took 2/3.
3) Blue Panther Jr., Soberano Jr., The Panther b Cancerbero, Raziel, Virus
16:38. Tecnicos took 2/3. Fujin, Raijin, Okumura replaced Cancerbero, Virus and Raizel in the preview, but not actually in the match.
4) Blue Panther, Guerrero Maya Jr., Rey Cometa DQ Dragón Rojo Jr., Hechicero, Kráneo
14:57. Straight falls by DQ when Dragon Rojo fouled Rey Cometa.
5) Último Guerrero © b Stuka Jr. [NWA MIDDLE]
16:22. UG took 2/3, the last when he absorbed the torpedo splash and used Stuka’s momentum to cradle him for the win. Fifth defense.
6) Diamante Azul, Máximo Sexy, Mistico b Ephesto, Luciferno, Mephisto
9:56. Tecnicos took 2/3.
The idea of the title match finish is similar to catching a crossbody and rolling thru for the pinfall. It struck me as silly, because those cross bodies are not meant to be finishes in most matches, and Stuka’s splash is supposed to be a devastating blow. It also turns Stuka’s bounce after landing from a fun addition to his move to a dumb opening he’s leaving for his opponents. (I’d prefer Stuka just missed and got cradled, but maybe Stuka’s ribs prefered this way.) They gave a lot to Stuka, including the rare kick out of the Guerrero Special, and a Tuesday title match is not going to break or make him, but the way they did the finish makes Stuka look dumb if he keeps doing the fun finish he’s been doing.
Third match has good moments. Fourth match was good but seemed to get away from him. Main event worked for the crowd. The first couple matches were not so good.
CMLL held a press conference to announce the return of the International Gran Prix. It will take place on July 1st, a Friday one month from today. They were only able to announce the Mexico team today: Volador Jr., Diamante Azul, Shocker, Rey Escorpión, Mephisto, Ultimo Guerrero, Máximo Sexy and Rush. CMLL initially said the international team would be announced some future day, but aired a video announcing them to close the press conference: Sam Elias (American Sweetness on DTU shows, from the US), Johnny Idol (from New Zealand, in DTU since January), Tama Tonga, Tanga Roa, Michael Elgin, Kushida (all four from NJPW), Okumura and Marco Corleone.
Tama is a former tag team CMLL champion; he and Terrible beat Atlantis & Diamante Azul, who may win the titles back on Sunday. Tonga is IWGP tag teams with his brother Tanga Roa, who was Camacho in WWE and Micah in TNA for a half a minute. Kushida was in Mexico in 2008 and 2009, but on indie and IWRG shows; this will be his debut in Arena Mexico. (Hopefully he’ll get to do more than this cibernetico.) Michael Elgin is debuting in Mexico; he’s in as a NJPW rep, and there’s still no deal between CMLL & ROH despite this being the obvious place to use them.
The rest of the press conference was more catching the media up to speed rather than reveal new news. Caristico & Mephisto talked about their impending title match in Puebla. Rey Cometa & Cavernario talked about possibly having a hair match, though Cavernario insisted on a title match first, and they didn’t have any idea when that would be. The annual Father’s Day will be on June 19th, a Sunday.
Tonight’s Lucha Underground is episode 19, Judgement Day. Tonight’s matches
- Daga vs Son of Havoc
- Jack Evans, PJ Black, Johnny Mundo (c) vs Prince Puma, and TBA for the Lucha Underground Trios championship
- Cage vs Matanza (c) for the Lucha Underground Championship
That looks like a really good show.
Extreme Tiger says Bobby Lashley is a formidable opponent, but not invincible. Extreme Tiger may be cut in half on Thursday.
Bobby Lashley says he feels like he’s the best wrestler in the world, and some of his fellow American wrestlers don’t give the same commitment he does. He liked his debut match against Rush.
The latest Winter Palace podcast has TKD talking about the CaraLucha Anniversary show, and Matt D also talking some lucha.

Lineups
CMLL (MON) 06/06/2016 Arena Puebla
1) París & Vega vs Ares & Guerrero Espacial
2) Asturiano & Millenium vs Rey Apocalipsis & Toro Bill Jr.
3) Black Tiger, Pegasso, Rey Samuray vs Cancerbero, Espíritu Maligno, Raziel
4) Esfinge, Stigma, Tritón vs Bobby Z, Puma, Tiger
5) Atlantis, Máximo Sexy, Mistico vs Negro Casas, Shocker, Último Guerrero
6) Mephisto © vs Carístico [CMLL WELTER]
first defense
Caristico isn’t likely to get another Welterweight title after just winning this one, so Mephisto’s win streak might go on. Fourth match is the rematch. Rey Samuray back around, though maybe not in the greatest match for him. Second match could be fun. Vega is a Puebla indie guy of no particular note prior.
CMLL (TUE) 06/07/2016 Arena México
1) Bengala & Flyer vs Artillero & Inquisidor
2) Astral, Eléctrico, Shockercito vs Demus 3:16, Pequeño Olímpico, Pierrothito
3) Estrellita, Marcela, Skadi vs Amapola, La Comandante, Reyna Isis
4) Fuego vs Pólvora [lightning]
5) Dragón Lee, Guerrero Maya Jr., Rey Cometa vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Rey Bucanero, Vangellys
6) Felino, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas vs Diamante Azul, Marco Corleone, Titán
Maybe Rey Cometa/Dragon Rojo is really a thing? Dragon Lee is listed back at 8 days into his 21 day break, which is hopefully an outdated lineup and not something that’s actually happening.
CMLL (TUE) 06/07/2016 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) León Blanco & Nautilius vs Espectrúm & Maléfico
2) Magnus, Oro Jr., Starman vs Arkángel de la Muerte, Canelo Casas, Sangre Azteca
3) Ángel de Oro, Esfinge, Stuka Jr. vs Furia Roja, Misterioso Jr., Sagrado
4) Atlantis, Máximo Sexy, Mistico vs Ephesto, Luciferno, Mephisto
5) Rush vs La Máscara
This is the first full match Rush & La Mascara have had; they met in an early round Universal tournament match three years ago. It seems to possible be a big match for later in the year, so it’s surprising they’re doing it at all.
Esfinge & Furia Roja matched up again.
