Caverman warfare

CMLL (FRI) 05/20/2016 Arena México [CMLL, ESTO, thecubsfan]
1) La Vaquerita & Lluvia b La Comandante & Tiffany
13:00. Rudas are 2/3.
2) Hechicero, Puma, Tiger b Esfinge, Fuego, Tritón
15:15. Rudos took 2/3 in a good match.
3) Rey Cometa, Stuka Jr., Titán b Cavernario, Misterioso Jr., Pólvora
16:16. Tecnicos took 2/3, Cometa beating Cavernario in a very good match. Cometa asked for a title match, got no response.
4) Dragón Rojo Jr. b Ángel de Oro [lightning]
8:36. Dragon Rojo won with a double stomp. Angel de Oro was stretchered out.
5) Atlantis, Mistico, Valiente b Euforia, Negro Casas, Último Guerrero
11:30. Tecnicos took 2/3 in a good match.
6) La Máscara, Shocker, Terrible b Pierroth, Rey Escorpión, Rush
10:52. Straight falls. Rush got DQed while attacking La Mascara in the first. Rush unmasked La Mascara in the second, but Mascara got him with a foul in the second. Mascara challenged both Pierroth and Rush to apuesta matches.

Matches 2/3/5 are well worth seeking out (and can be found elsewhere.) Rey Escorpion acted as if he was part of the Ingobernables in the main event. Barbaro Cavernario was the best guy on the show.

AAA has been busy announcing Lucha World Cup teams in the last 24 hours. I suspect the full field is going to be announced on the TV show today, and they’re getting them all out there before the show.

Team USA (Women): Santana Garrett, Sienna (Allysin Kay), Cheerleader Melissa
Team Rest of the World: Mil Muertes, Rockstar Spud, Apolo
Team Mexico Internacional: Rey Mysterio Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr., Dragon Azteca Jr.

Apolo is working on Hugo Savinovich’s shows in Chile, which may by the connection. Santana did was on the last one, wrestling Taya. Sienna is another new TNA woman who’s more for her indie work. Rockstar Spud has been in TNA for far longer. That Rest of the World team is an odd visual.

It’s going to be tough to sell Mil Muertes as not being the same Mesias AAA fans have seen in a decade, especially in something in something treated as a serious competition. For the sake of this tournament, he’s from parts unknown. Mil and Dragon Azteca are the first Lucha Underground characters to be used outside of Lucha Underground.

Dragon Azteca Jr. working a big show in Mexico is cool. I’m still disappointed for guys like Fenix who are very good, work the whole year for AAA, and are apparently going to be staying at home (or working a spot show in the hinderlands) than be a part of this.

Tonight, Elite hands out completely meaningless championship belts. Get excited!

The new heavyweight title will be decided between Rush, Ultimo Guerrero, LA Park, Maximo Sexy, Super Crazy, Diamante Azul, Cibernetico and Hijo de Dos Caras. (Azul is still listed despite not making Informa this week and not making the press conference yesterday.) The match will be a battle royal, with the final two going to a pinfall. The new middleweight championship will be decided between Caristico, La Mascara, Atlantis, Mephisto, Valiente, Toscano, Argos, Angel de Oro, Puma, and Golden Magic in a normal cibernetico. The last four qualified with wins on the previous Elite show, but also might be the first four out of that. Cibernetico & Caristico have been promoted as the two big stars of this promotion and are the favorites to win.

The show also includes Dalys defending her women’s title against La Jarochita, and a Copa Maestros Elite with Blue Panther, Fuerza Guerrera, Shu el Guerrero and Pantera II (replacing Solar; teams aren’t clear.) This would be Pantera’s first match in Arena Mexico since losing his mask there to Misterioso in 2006 in a cage match. Pantera’s just kept wearing his mask, occasionally claiming he wasn’t paid for the mask loss. (I think the real story in these situations is they believe they’re much more marketable with the mask.) I wonder how they step around it.

This show will air on Azteca7 starting next Friday night.

Elite held a press conference yesterday afternoon to promote the show, but the big news is the Saturday show is a one-off. They’ll return to Wednesday shows sometime in June. (They’ll have enough TV to last the next two weeks, so it may not be until June 8th.) I don’t understand you’d run the big show on a different day of the week, training people to pay less attention to the Wednesday shows, but this promotion is not built for me to understand.

I actually understood less about the matches tonight too than before the press conference: they introduced all the participants in both matches, except some people in both matches were missing. I don’t think they were explaining a change, but they weren’t explaining much. No word about what the Liga Elite is for.

Tonight’s the Cara Lucha 2nd Anniversary show, with Flamita and Mascara Dorada as the main event, and either Latigo or Toro Negro Jr. will lose their mask in the undercard. The Arena Mexico show has bigger names, but this is likely to be the better show.

Sexy Star appeared on the latest edition of YouTube audio show Podcast Boom. LigerFever did a heroic job of translating it. It was the sort of self serving performance you expect out of Sexy Star – she’d position herself as a victim of people who treated her roughly in the ring, then later talked about how she felt like taking cheap shots at Jennifer Blake (who Sexy trashed.) Sexy explained she wasn’t wrestling now because she was too busy being a mom, after earlier explaining she was training very hard to boxer and hoped to have a bout soon.

Sexy Star’s explanation about the Mixed tag team championship was complete nonsense. Sexy said she didn’t the tag team titles were meant to be defending, claiming she thought they were trophies they would keep. Sexy Star said she acted in the spur of the moment, didn’t think the tag title defense had a purpose, and did it to motivate Taya – all things that don’t seem to make sense when you put them together. This comes of as dishonest and unbelievable – just say “I didn’t want to lose” and be done with it. There’s certainly true stuff Sexy Star said during the podcast, but she killed her credibility first. It did establish the show as a place where you can pretty much say anything and don’t have to worry about push back. Konnan’s gimmick of telling the straight truth now that he’s not with AAA is harmed by these sort of things.

LuchaWorld has the Lucha Report and the latest edition of the podcast.

Diosa Atenea retained her WWS Championship in France yesterday.

Chilanga Mask on 06/05 in Arena Jose Suliaman/Solidaridad
1: Extreme Tiger vs Caifan
2: Makabre vs Shiryu Dragon vs Aeroboy vs Wotan
3: Laredo Kid vs Ultimo Ninja vs Astro
4: Epydemius & Alberto Dos Rios vs Mr Leo & Fly Star
5: Impulso & Arez vs Facade vs Jason Gory
6: Jeque vs Caifan III

(a) Hijo de Rey Misterio does an interview to promote a show that about 10 minutes away from me – but it’s $25 and they don’t advertise a single match, or many guys I want to see.

The most notable part of Kalisto’s appearance in Mexico is he managed to avoid saying anything about the Octagon/Octagon Jr. deal.

Reynosa’s Magnifico lost his mask last weekend to Imagen II.

Ciudad Victoria Roker Boy talks about his career, who says he was a fill in wrestler for AAA.

Lineups

CMLL (FRI) 05/27/2016 Arena México
1) Oro Jr. & Soberano Jr. vs Cancerbero & Raziel
2) Marcela, Princesa Sugehit, Silueta vs Amapola, Dalys, Zeuxis
3) Blue Panther, Blue Panther Jr., The Panther vs Ephesto, Luciferno, Mephisto
4) Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Felino [lightning]
5) Diamante Azul, Marco Corleone, Titán vs Kráneo, Rey Bucanero, Ripper
6) Dragón Lee, Máximo Sexy, Mistico vs La Máscara, Shocker, Terrible [Relevos Increíbles]

All the feuds from this last Friday are dropped – no Rush, no Cometa or Cavernario. The promotion is just drifting in the wind.

The main event is billed as a incredible partners, even though La Mascara appears to be a rudo on all shows now.

Diamante Azul is part time, never very over, never very good, probably not staying for too long but he’s tall so he’s dropped back in the semimain on Fridays. Guess we should be happy it’s not the main event. I guess the Dragon Lee/La Mascara feud is back, which might bring Dragon Lee into the Rush/Pierroth team.

Silueta mentioned she was finishing up in Japan for now, so she’ll probably actually be on this show.
