CMLL Puebla: 2016-02-15

Volador doing Volador things
Volador doing Volador things

Recapped: 02/15/2016

What happened: Volador defeated Negro Casas to keep the NWA Welterweight Championship. Negro Casas accepted his challenge for a hair match, and it might happen. TGR challenged Los Ingobernables to a triple apuesta match. That definitely isn’t happening.

What was good: The main event definitely is worth going out of your way to watch and I liked the second match too.

Where can I watch it: It’s on CMLL’s YouTube channel.

Match 1: Arkalis & París vs El Malayo & King Jaguar
Arena Puebla, 02/15/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Paris casadora cradle King Jaguar (4:38)
    • Arkalis crucifix Malayo (4:55)
  2. rudos
    • Malayo reverse double arm cradle Arkalis (2:12)
    • King Jaguar el Pulpo Paris (2:32)
  3. rudos
    • King Jaguar Volador Spiral Arkalis (4:54)
    • Malayao sideways tapatia (5:36)

Winner: rudos (2-1)
Match Time: 13:03
Review: [OK] This seemed like dragged a bit for me, but the video was also dying for me during this match and it didn’t help. Malayo appears to be very good and occasionally gets to show it. King Jaguar doing the Volador Spiral is not something I expected to see today. The tecnicos were OK.

Match 2: Asturiano, Robin, Soberano Jr. ©  vs Artillero ©, Rey Apocalipsis, Toro Bill Jr.
Arena Puebla, 02/15/2016

  1. tecnicos
    • Robin sit down powerbomb Artillero (5:11)
  2. rudos
    • Artillero Special on Soberano Jr. (2:24)
  3. tecnicos
    • double pine Asturiano & Rey Apocalipsis (1:31)
    • Soberano missile dropkick, Robin German suplex Artillero (2:18)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 9:53

Review: [good] fun match, if not a lot to it. Artillero wanted no part of his partner’s wacky antics, which makes it less fun. Soberano is very good. Asturiano didn’t get do as much in other matches, and might have handled the German suplex on the finish better than Robin.

Match 3: Estrellita, La Vaquerita, Silueta vs Amapola, Tiffany, Zeuxis

Arena Puebla, 02/15/2016

  1. tecnicas
    • Estrellita bridging backslide Amapola (4:36)
    • Vaquerita top rope elbow (6:00)
  2. rudas
    • Tiffany shorter powerbomb Vaquerita (2:52)
    • Zeuxis La Roca Silueta (3:11)
  3. rudas
    • Amapola Devil’s Wings Estrellita (4:11)

Winner: rudas (2-1)
Match Time: 13:22

Review: [ok] a women’s match in CMLL in 2016, which meant Zeuxis hit people hard on occasion and there were a lot of iffy looking spots. Estrellita’s cradle went bad, as happens. Some of Silueta’s spots worked, some did not (more often when she was working against Tiffany.) Amapola put down Estrellita not a moment too soon.

Match 4: Esfinge, Stigma, Stuka Jr. vs El Cuatrero, Okumura, Sansón
Arena Puebla, 02/15/2016

  1. rudos
    • Sanson guillotine kneedrop Stuka Jr. (6:23)
  2. tecnicos
    • Okumura hanging DDT Esfinge (3:38)
    • Stuka casadora cradle Sanon (4:03)
    • Stigmatica Cuatrero (4:53)
  3. tecnicos
    • Nudo Egipico on Okumura (3:19)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 14:35

Review: [ok] another match to just have a match. Okumura’s rookies did fine, even though it’s not the rookies he’s used to having around. Stigma giving his backpack stunner to Cuatrero is a weird visual. I normally like having changes to the match formula, but the second fall going long just me me think about how all these matches were likely going to get more time than the main event.

Match 5: La Máscara, Marco Corleone, Rush vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Vangellys
Arena Puebla, 02/15/2016

  1. Ingobernables
    • La Mascara corner knee smash Terrible (4:27)
  2. TGR
    • Vangelis Northern lights suplex Rush (2:40)
  3. Ingobernables
    • DQ Rey Bucanero [foul on Terrible] (7:00)

Winner: Ingobernables
Match Time: 14:07
Notes: Bucanero gave Mascara the Buca Storm, Rush pulled out Pompin (hard), Bucanero fouled Mascara, and the referee only called the DQ on Bucanero. TGR wanted a hairs vs hairs/mask match, ended up just taking Mascara’s mask while they were talking.

Review: [ok] This went on too long for my likings. Ingobernables were amusing rudos (some stooging, somewhat properly not caring much about this match.) Terrible is more fired up when he faces this team, but not so much for taking the double knee smash – he was bending over to avoid taking it directly, and it meant Mascara couldn’t actually hit the move like normal. Vangellys seems like he’s gotten worse of late.

Match 6: Volador Jr. © vs Negro Casas for the NWA World Welterweight Championship
Arena Puebla, 02/15/2016

  1. Negro Casas scorpion (2:28)
  2. Volador Jr. backcracker (3:13)
  3. Volador Jr. blocked casita (9:31)

Winner: Volador Jr., 8th defense
Match Time: 15:12
Notes: Zacarias was Negro’s second. Esfinge is Volador’s second. Casas tried fouling Volador, then tried faking a foul, but Tirantes didn’t buy it. Casas tried a casita instead, but Volador blocked it to pin him.

Review: [great] much more than I thought we’d get given how long the rest of the show went (and this turned out to be one of the longer Puebla shows in a while because they took their time.) This was a more of a mix of both guys ideas for big singles matches rather than being one or the other – there were some of the Volador match big spots in the third fall, but there were also more creative near falls outside of just those moves, and the finish specifically came off well. Casas tried the same blocked casita idea in his hair match with Super Parka, and it worked so much better here. They got a good near fall out of casita either, and Volador’s tentative moonsault bit was good fun. There are nits to pick – people should probably stop working over Volador’s legs, it seems completely ineffective. Volador’s tope con giro in the third fall right out of a handspring spot was amazing, and I’d rather have him do that then sell the leg. If this is a preview for their hair match, it’s going to be a really good hair match.
