Flyer ends the tournament back in the crowd

What happened? LA Park & Dr. Wagner Jr. returned to CMLL for the first time in nearly a decade. Park continued his indie feud with Rush, while Atlantis and Sombra continued to feud. Guerrero Maya Jr. got some revenge for losing En Busca de un Idolo by winning the cibernetico. This was the biggest crowd for a regular CMLL show in a while and it felt better than regular.

What was good? All of the matches felt better than usual. The cibernetico was as good or better than anything in this year’s Busca tournament, and the main event was a crazy spectacle. The semimain match was fun too.

Where can I watch? It’s all on YouTube, though the ClaroSports one has some video issues.

Review: [ok] fine enough opening match, with guys seemingly doing a little more than they would do on a normal Tuesday. Pegasso’s 450 splash looked good! The rest of his match did not look particularly good, but you know the 450 splash is at least one thing. Hijo del Signo’s mask is also one thing that looked good for him. Third fall was the best fall.

a good 450 splash!

Panther flying DDT (once the ref moves)

Review: [OK] Kind of every Boricua match they’ve done, including the quick loss in the first fall and the short second fall win. Panther pulled out the flying DDT he hasn’t done since En Busca de un Idolo. Wish there’d be more of that. This match was really built around Pierroth spots, which is not an exciting concept. It did pick up in the last two minutes but it’s a lot to get there.

best Blue Panther Jr. spot of the tournament

Review: [great] the best moments of this year’s tournament, with the format reducing the requirement on the lesser members of each team and Virus & Negro Casas obviously adding to the match. There probably should be more of this and less the young guys against each other; the idea is supposed to be that these new guys can reach the level of the top guys but it’s not seen in practice. Maya getting the win here is a change torwards that end; Virus & Casas have tended to win these in past years. Negro Casas plays off these guys so well; his screams back at Disturbio were fun. Maya beating Boby was the expected correction from last week. Flyer looked better as a guy who did a few high spot and got out. (He’s really better of being an indy guy at this stage of his development than a CMLL one.) Canelo & Zavala looked good just getting out.

crushing knee smashes are all the rage
Maya sort of hits Zavala, definitely hits the barricade
brainbuster

Match 4: Dragon Lee, Marco Corleone, Valiente vs Ephesto, Mephisto, Rey Escorpión
Arena México, 08/28/2015
Video: thecubsfan, thecubsfan

no safety for Escorpion
  1. rudos
    • Ephesto rebound splash Valiente (3:30)
    • Ephesto & Mephisto dropkick Dragon Lee (3:55)
  2. tecnicos
    • Dragon Lee hanging double stomp Ephesto (3:24)
    • Valiente Buster Mephisto (3:24)
  3. tecnicos
    • Marco Aereo Italia Mephisto (4:52)

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 12:11

Review: [good] A crowd pleasing match in front of a really excited crowd. This was the Dragon Lee show at some points, especially with his big spots in the third fall, but the other guys looked good and the reactions seemed to push them to bigger spots. Draogn Lee and Rey Escorpión are a good mix of talents and would have an outstanding match together.

Match 5: Dr. Wagner Jr., La Sombra, Rush vs Atlantis, LA Park, Volador Jr.
Arena México, 08/28/2015
Video: thecubsfan, thecubsfan

LA Park tope
  1. Team Atlantis
    • Atlantida Wagner (3:36)
    • Volador backcracker Rush (3:43)
  2. Team Sombra
    • Rush corner dropkick LA Park (8:25)
    • Sombra & Rush double suplex Atlantis (9:05)
  3. Team Sombra
    • Sombra mask pull Atlantis (9:52)
    • Wagner Driver on LA Park (9:52)

Winner: Team Sombra (2-1)
Match Time: 22:40
Notes: Atlantis had Sombra in Atlantida, but clipped the referee again. Sombra fouled Atlantis and pinned him, but Park dropkicked referee Tirantes to break it up. Sombra pulled Atlantis’ mask while Wagner fouled Park and beat him with a Wagner Driver for the win. Wagner, Sombra and Rush seemed to be on the same page by the end of the match.

German suplex war

Review: [great] superb out of control brawl, exactly what it should’ve been for the grand returns of LA Park & Dr. Wagner. The crowd went crazy for this match and the wrestlers went crazier. LA Park & Rush battled, Wagner fit in just enough with his partners (not totally, not until the third fall) and Sombra and Atlantis didn’t get overshadowed. This felt like an event and part of a hot period for the promotion. There was no real build here; it was going along at a crazy rate the whole way thru and may have only settled down a little bit in the third fall. This may have been an even better match live, because the cameras really couldn’t keep up with it. Park & Wagner came off as giant stars, but the CMLL guys were not just caught in their shadow. They seemed to set up so many big matches from this. Park & Rush is going to be so big if/when it happened. Even Wagner just wordlessly staring at Volador after the match seemed important – and now it’s just a matter of being able being able to keep it all together.
