CMLL on Fox Sports (Mexico): 2014-08-23

heavyweight champion at work (not the masked guy)

recap
taped 2014-08-15 @ Arena México

Universal Tournament notes: there are no good notes. I did end up watching the Azteca version, but I don’t think the extra 4-5 minutes would have made this any less a waste of life.

this is the best part of Felino’s game

JCR was surprised when Terrible lost to Euforia quickly, so he doesn’t pay a lot of attention. Felino’s effort extended to just one good elbow drop. Shocker played veteran tecnico in both of these matches and it didn’t really work. Shocker worked hardest in the final, but that match was also totally edited with crowd shots.

sit down powerbomb or…
…sit down powerbomb
Sombra considers what Rush would do in this situation

Rey Escorpion and Sombra had a good looking for the time they had, and that was the closest thing to a real match (at 3x speed) rather than just spots thrown together randomlly, and Sombra did his impression of Rush in his match with Negro Casas. Sombra’s completely fallen in love with knee smashes – is that better for his knees than the high flying? Sombra’s great with his character – completely cocky, able to beat anyone when he goes 100% but doesn’t feel the need to – but that’s a rudo gimmick and I’m still not sure why he’s not on that side.

a nice looking Shocker move!
running forearm to the face always works

Atlantis, Diamante Azul, Marco Corleone vs Gran Guerrero, Niebla Roja, Último Guerrero: [OK] Standard Atlantis/UG build up trios match, seemingly airing three times a week – actually may be less than that, since they weren’t in here as much as you would think. I think the idea here was to show that Gran Guerrero interfering might not be a good idea because Tirantes could/will actually notice on the anniversary show, but I’m not sure anyone bought that. (JCR did try pushing that Tirantes finally smartened up.) Since Marco defeated Terrible, I believe Niebla Roja is now his biggest rival. They are quite amazing together. Not sure Ultimo Guerrero’s new strategy of hiding behind a gate is really going to work in the mask match. Gran Guerrero survived Diamante Azul’s German suplex, his new biggest career achievement.
