taped 2014-05-16 @ Arena México
(for future people trying to figure out what’s going on here, the show aired a day late this week)
Diamante Azul, La Máscara, Stuka Jr. vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Vangellys: La Mascara is now a Hector Garza wannabe, which is actually a step up for him. He could use a few more steps, and I enjoyed how Bucanero and Terrible crushed him when he tried to do the stop sign bit. Mascara worked this match as super arrogant but not destructive – he wasn’t standing in the corner with his partners, but he actually caused the comeback when they forced him back in and might have won the match for him. Finish was a super obvious foul – so obvious both the técnico and rudo announcers were calling for the DQ! – but it was totally believable when it appeared Tiger Hispano missed it and counted three anyway (before overturning himself for the DQ.) It seems like CMLL’s moved Stuka up a run, but it’s putting him in a lot of matches with TRT where he’s only in to do his top rope splash and not much more.
Máscara Dorada, Titán, Valiente vs Kráneo, Mephisto, Ripper: Good match, with the third fall being the obvious standout. The first two falls were just setups for surprise against momentum pins (the second fall being a really long one that dragged the match down a little bit), and the third fall was the high flying insanity you’d expected out of that técnico side. It’s helped a bunch by the rudos – Kraneo in particular was throwing himself everywhere – so much that they might deserve the win as much as I would’ve liked to see the técnicos take it. Mascara Dorada remains at his peak and it’s disappointing the only meaningful thing he got to do during his break between tours was do his laundry. Titan/Ripper might work.
Marco Corleone, Máximo, Volador Jr. vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Rey Escorpión, Shocker: A bit out of place as a main event, but it would’ve been fine as a semifinal and the crowd responded to it well. No particular feud, though Shocker and Marco did have a bit of a face off in the first fall. There was a rough stretch with Marco and Dragon Rojo in the second fall, but everything else went fine. Dragon Rojo’s top rope double stomp looked very unfun to take.
Cavernario vs Soberano Jr. in a En Busca de un Idolo match: Not on the level of the best Cavernario matches, but still good. Nice that they used the big splash as a finish instead of bringing it back in for more. Soberano is good for his age, but in a competition where a lot of people are great. He finished exactly where he should’ve finished.
Cachorro vs Súper Halcón Jr. in a En Busca de un Idolo match: Cachorro forced Super Halcón into a different match by going with big moves early; Halcón had to remember some big moves of his own to keep up. They kind of ran out of spots, repeating stuff before the end of the match, but Halcón did come off as more aggressive than he did in his other matches. Right guy still won.
