Estrellita, La Vaquerita, Marcela vs La Seductora, Princesa Blanca, Princesa Sugheit: A long set up to the Princesas breaking up. They played it completely normal for 90% of the match, then spent the last 10% fighting each other. I’m not sure that works, but that is normal as well. The need to have Marcela, Sugheit and Blanca all in the ring meant Seductora had to catch Vaquerita’s dive and then get right back up to catch Estrellita’s dive, which is definitely abnormal. Vaquerita – the person Psycho Clown is always challenging! – looked ok her in return and has a nice submission move.
Atlantis, Diamante Azul, Marco Corleone vs Euforia, Niebla Roja, Último Guerrero: A routine match – by which I mean Marco and Azul did their usual routines and Atlantis/UG did their own. I’m not sure you can count this as heating up the rivalry when one of Ultimo Guerrero’s tactics is to just lay down and do nothing. (And it works!) Ultimo Guerrero won because he had bad aim on his foul. They’ve run out of idea for this feud.
La Máscara, La Sombra, Rush vs Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas, Ripper: Noticeably edited; the chair shot has to stay in because it’s the end of the fall, but the blue box usage is cut out (and there seems to be a significant missing chunk in the third fall.) It’s still 3 guys trying to be Rush for a large portion of the match, and there’s only 1 Rush. Match drags for a large part as a results. Poor Ripper, pulled into a war he had nothing to do with.
Soberano Jr. vs Guerrero Negro Jr. in a En Busca de un Idolo match: Soberano showcase, with big spots everywhere. Guerrero Negro got in a little early, a few crazy bumps, and then the win late, but this was more about arranging things for Soberano most of the match. It was some really good highlights. I wish it was more than that, but that’s what this competition is about. Guerrero really threw himself around in this one; I had a note to go back and grab a big fall he took in this one, and I thought I meant two other moments before I finally had it.
Cachorro vs Dragon Lee in a En Busca de un Idolo match: Great. Started out as normal lightning match but turned into a war. These kind of matches, which CMLL wouldn’t think to book in any meaningful situation, are the greatest possible justification for this sort of tournament. Cachorro adapted to being a rudo smoothly, and was the perfect match to Dragon Lee’s style. Cachorro pulled off some nice flying of his own – his springbord dropkick looked even better than his tope int his one – but he was able to take control of Dragon Lee enough that Lee felt like he was fighting to land his big shots. I’m very relucant to put CMLL lightning matches this high, but this was a pretty long one and as long as some third falls in matches where the first two falls are basically disregarded. Incredible finish, especially given how Tiger Hispano had blown what appeared to be the scheduled three count.
