IWRG (SUN) 02/02/2014 Arena Naucalpan [The Gladiatores]
1) Cristal, Dama de Hierro (Mexico City), Látigo b Diosa Maya, La Sádica, Zurdog
First IWRG match of the year for the women.
2) Chico Che, Diva Salvaje, Miss Gaviota b Hijo del Fishman, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro
Fishman’s first match here since 2012.
3) Golden Magic b Oficial 911 [IWRG Rey del Ring]
Oficial 911 kept the point over recent rival Golden Magic. Second defense
4) Alan Extreme & Emperador Azteca b Araña de Plata, Atomic Star, Centvrión, Dragón Celestial, Electro Boy, Imposible [El Protector, seeding battle royal]
5) Dragón Celestial & Relámpago b Centvrión & Hijo De Dos Caras [El Protector, quarterfinal]
6) Electro Boy & Súper Nova b Araña de Plata & Trauma I [El Protector, quarterfinal]
7) Atomic Star & Eterno b Hijo de Pirata Morgan & Imposible [El Protector, quarterfinal]
Eterno’s return from leg injury.
8) Emperador Azteca & Máscara Púrpura b Alan Extreme & Veneno [El Protector, quarterfinal]
Alan Extreme & Veneno, the actual IWRG tag team champions, lose in the first round to a team that’s never teamed before and may never team again.
9) Electro Boy & Súper Nova b Dragón Celestial & Relámpago [El Protector, semifinal]
10) Atomic Star & Eterno b Emperador Azteca & Máscara Púrpura [El Protector, semifinal]
11) Electro Boy & Súper Nova b Atomic Star & Eterno [El Protector, final]
Tag team partners collide! Both Eterno & Super Nova and Electro & Atomic are regular teams, and the younger guys are always wearing Eterno t-shirts. No one really wanted to do this match at first, but they eventually got into it. Super Nova beat Eterno & Electro Boy beat Atomic Star to win the tournament.
An atomicos with Nova/Eterno/Atomic/Electro would be a neat idea. They’ve already released next week’s card, and the rookies are in the tercera with other rookies from this tournament.
Mr. Aguila & Reapper beat Volador & La Mascara in Arena Puebla via faked foul, but the real story of the night was Mr. Aguila appearing to be wrestling in no condition again. Porra Fresa, on Facebook, notes Aguila’s bad performance and mentions Volador specifically blamed it on Aguila being drunk in a post match promo. El Popular seems to have a new person on the beat – they said Rey Bucanero was identifiable by his blue mask! – but even they noted the main event was bad and said the people turned on the match, rooting for Tirantes.
The Puebla lineup for next week has Aguila vs Volador (Aguila faked the foul to set it up.) Calling a guy drunk is a quite a way to build up next week’s show. CMLL seems to only sit out Mr. Aguila if he does this in a big match, so it’s possible he’ll be around for that match. And they don’t have any problem airing it, so it’ll turn up in about 2 weeks.
Lady Apache, Tania & Lola Gonzalez beat Miss Janeth, Rossy Moreno and Vicky Carranza in the main event of the all women’s show at Arena Lopez Mateos.
The best match on the Casanova promoted show in Monterrey this weekend was said to be Rico Rodriguez versus Ultimo Ninja. In an earlier match, Harry Boy looked like he could’ve suffered a severe injury taking reckless press slam to the floor from Dash, but he turned out to only be shaken up and suffered a wrist injury.
CMLL’s preview of tonight’s Nuevo Valores feud pushes 10th anniversary celebrant Guerrero Maya against Virus in the trios semifinal, teasing a mask versus hair match. That’s unlikely but please do it anyway. Main event is Rush, Titan and Rey Cometa versus Mr. Niebla, Felino and Barbaro Cavernario. Rush and Titan have teamed very rarely before this Nuevo Valores project, so I’m still suspecting a trios title defense every time they do – and the Peste Negra should have earned one by winning last week’s tournament.
Guadalajara has a Sombra vs Averno match tonight.
A DF show for 02/15 lists Mephisto vs Averno for the first time ever. I’m working on a project about singles CMLL matches (look for it next week?) and, as far as I can tell, that would indeed be the first time they’ve had a singles match. I can not imagine another promotion where two guys would successfully team for 13 years without ever breaking up or just being thrown against each for a one time gimmick match. (They have matched up in mixed sides tag matches.) I don’t think Averno and Mephisto should have a series of matches – who would possibly be the good guy? – but this has been an historically long partnership.
That show also has a Copa Tony Sugar, and DJ Spectro posted results from a 1959 Arena Coliseo show where Tony Sugar happened to be working in the segunda. Main event was Circulo Rojo losing his mask to El Rebelde; every name has been used by someone else first.
Guerrero Maya Jr. is giving away a mask to whoever sends in the best fan video or photo by Friday.
Cool photos of Dorrel Dixon, his gym and life.
