Sin Cara says he’s a free agent and has rights to that name

Sin Cara made his first post-WWE appearance on tonight’s Tercera Caida, starting at the 33:30 mark. He also talked for about 20 more minutes on the after the cameras segment.

Sin Cara made a lot of declarations, but the biggest were about his name and future. Sin Cara stated he had legal rights to that name and would continue using it in Mexico. Cara was using a slightly modified version of his WWE mask (eye holes restored to bring back the white contacts) and will be using that mask going forward. WWE and CMLL have both appeared to make claims on both the look and identity, but Sin Cara said he owned both and had people legally taking care of it.

Sin Cara also said he was out of his WWE contract, had the option to return, but would probably not. Sin Cara said he wanted to wrestle everywhere as an independent, and not be tied to one company, similar to statements Dr. Wagner Jr. and LA Park have made in the past. Sin Cara brought up lots of promotions – including CMLL, AAA, TxT and NJPW – as places to go, but his freedom seemed more important than the destination.

As of now, he’s only committed to two matches – the 02/01 Sin Cara Gym Anniversary show (which will include Argenis, Argos, Mini Monster Clown and planned to have past mask victims Oriental & Black Warrior ) and the previously announced 03/01 Baja Stars Wrestling Tijuana show. He’s got his legal representation taking care of these shows and said the 03/01 show wasn’t totally certain.

There’s a lot more to unpack, and I’ll try to do that tomorrow.

  1. maybe that was part of the agreement with wwe. he got to keep the sin cara name because they didn’t think he would be such an epic fail for them and the thought they had him for a long time

  2. most surprising thing so far is that it seems 90% of the internet opinion is bashing ‘stico, yeah, he’s full of crap, but, well, that comes with the job, just a few days earlier Dandy said that now Obama was interested in LWO (dafuq??!!) or something like that and that no one got out of his Casita, and current users do it wrong “it can damage the cervical bones if well done” and surely more stuff that one could question but Mistico is the one who’s gonna be overanalized to death :p

It would be pretty could if: he joined AAA, was given a new gimmick and push, got over huge, left AAA, jumped to CMLL with said new gimmick, AAA sues, he claims he created the character, keeps wrestling… and then lots of people start bitching “DAMN YOU AAA YOU KEEP STEALING CHARACTERS!!!!” X_x

“he was notorious for off screen agitated rants to the press in his last few years in Mexico.”

    Damn!! Missed those years! lol

I think Sin Cara might feel he did create either of both gimmicks, contrasting it with LA Park, who has said that Peña told him about the idea he had and made a drawing in a napkin and then Tapia went with the outfit makers and designed the character -which probably does not resemble what Peña draw. Assuming the story is true, LA Park might feel he created the gimmick, but it would hardly work in court… there’s the chance that someone in CMLL told SinC about the general idea and then he fleshed it out, dunno… comparing it to Brillante Jr, it seems they told him “you’ll now be called Sombra, so you’ll use black color predominantly” but the design itself seems to be the same, just in black, so my guess is Sombra could also feel he owns the gimmick O_o so it is possible that CMLL let the guys develop their thing, instead of hiring graphic designers and marketing experts and then registered the characters…
not enough but a stronger case than Psicosis II.

  3. I dunno. I find it hard to believe Vince wouldn’t have locked the Sin Cara name up. I remember when the Dudleys went to TNA and they were SURE that the legalities were taken care of so they could use it. Then they blamed Paul Heyman for not taking care of it when he said he did and we see what happened. I hope for Cara’s sake he’s right or this will be his third gimmick in how long?
