CMLL (FRI) 09/20/2013 Arena Mexico [Black Terry Jr. (flickr), CMLL, Terra, Yahoo! Deportes]
1) Guerrero Negro Jr. & Herodes Jr. b Molotov & Soberano Jr.
Rudos took 2/3 in a good opener. Guerrero Negro didn’t cover up his newly bald head.
2) Dalis la Caribeña, Luna Mágica, Marcela b La Comandante, La Seductora, Princesa Blanca
Straight falls for the tecnicas, though Dallys stole a Marcela pin at the end and they shoved each other again.
3) Hijo del Fantasma, Rey Cometa, Tritón b Ishii, Puma, Tiger
Tecnicos took 2/3 in a very good match. Fantamsa landed the Phantom Attack on Tiger for the win.
4) Ángel de Oro b Misterioso Jr. [lightning]
Angel de Oro survived Misterioso’s big moves and beat him with the mecedora in 6:46
5) Diamante Azul, Super Porky, Titán DQ Pierroth, Pólvora, Rey Escorpión
DQ for excessive Rey Escorpion violence on Super Porky.
6) Averno, Último Guerrero, Volador Jr. b Atlantis, Blue Panther, La Sombra
In a backstage promo after the match, UG spoke about last week not being a fraude because they said the mask match would be the winner of the tag match but he and Atlantis would do their mask match some time down the line.
I think there’s got to be 20 better things to do with Rey Escorpion than to feud him with Super Porky, but that’s a feud that actually might have a resolution (and a good one for Escorpion.)
Terra suddenly ended after the fourth match. They had time to say goodbye, but there was no explanation. It appears the top two matches will air on Fox Sports, which means maybe this will be the way they go from now on (or maybe they’ll change it in a week.) They were also using a different device to handle the video capture and didn’t appear to have it set up right – they seemed to be cropping the bottom of the (4:3) feed to get it to Terra’s usual (16:9) ratio, and some of the mat work was hard to see. Hopefully they fix that before Sunday.
Friday night, Todo x el Todo announced Saturday’s mask match between Hijo del Santo and LA Park and Dr. Wagner Jr. was canceled. The show had been promoted on TxT shows and press conferences. The press release blames “social political conditions” and the recent Ingrid/Manuel storms which hit Mexico and have caused the Zocalo to be used for donations for the cancellation. They say the match is not canceled, just postponed a moment, until “the natural course of actions.”
This is total garbage. TXT never had an agreement for a show and knew the show wasn’t happening long before these storms. They probably would’ve been better off just never mentioning the show, because this cancellation was done in a cowardly and disgusting way.
No card had ever been announced. No start time had ever been announced. Everyone knew it wasn’t going to happen. The people involved had stopped talking about the show so they wouldn’t have to try to explain why they were making no progress on it. Instead, TxT uses a storm – where people died and thousands lost their homes – as cover for canceling a show they knew long ago wasn’t happening. It’s very low.
It’s not even like TxT appear to care about the people affected by the storm in this press release. AAA found a way to integrate donations with it’s show this weekend, by comparison. TxT is using a tragedy to get out of running a show it couldn’t run, but doesn’t say they’re helping the people who’s lives are really affected in any way.
The reality is no show was going to happen in Zocalo this weekend. It wouldn’t be allowed due to the political climate. We visited the area on Tuesday and it was on lockdown to prevent the protesting teachers from returning to set back up camp and occupy the area again. It’s now also going to be used to collect donations for people harmed by the recent hurricanes, but there’s no situation where they police would’ve allowed people to freely enter that area this weekend or really any time soon. Even if the show had really ever been set, it would’ve been canceled (and canceled a while ago.)
The reality is Santo and company never had a confirmed deal to run a show in Zocalo this weekend. The governmental organizing committee was talking to TxT, CMLL and AAA all about running a show there, with the companies undercutting each other on the cost. It did not appear any deal with any promotion was ever done. It definitely does not appear Santo thought he was particularly close, since he’s been hinting the show was canceled for weeks and has spent the last week in New York City instead of promoting the supposed show. This is about as insincere as a press release can get.
LA Park versus Dr. Wagner, with or without Santo, still may happen some point. It still depends on someone offering them the amount of money they want (which is really high, and probably will get higher between when they agree to the show and the day of the show.). This doesn’t really affect that. It’ll be tough to get people to believe it’s actually happening at any point, but it was already that way.
Sin Cara will team with Rey Misterio Jr. on the upcoming WWE Mexico tour.
A bill overwhelming passed the Mexico House of Representatives which would restrict lewd images and phrases as well as anything advocating violence on television. This is a “all our children would have good morals if there weren’t women in bikinis on TV” thing, but it sounds like it’s possibly something which could affect lucha libre. It still must pass the Senate and it’s unclear how much power they’d have to enforce such things – the article mentions later about the networks voluntarily making changes.
Hijo del Rey Misterio (II) and Extreme Tiger will be wrestling in the Chicago area this weekend.
Cronicas y Leyendas looks back at heavyweight champion Popitekus,
