WWL (SUN) 07/07/2013 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [Black Terry Jr. (Flickr), Estrellas del Ring, LuchaMania Monterrey, RFC, WWL]
1) Galactar & Kaientai b Gemelo Muerte I & Gemelo Muerte II and Dralion & Rey Orion
Best match on the show
2) Difunto I, Genocida, Iron (Monterrey), Memo Valles b Hijo Del Mongol Chino, Misionero, Perverso, Totem
Fans liked Genocida.
3) Estelaris Jr., Hombre Sin Miedo, Laredo Kid b Máscara Púrpura, Ninja Jr., Rico Rodriguez
Very good match, better than any that followed it.
4) Colt Cabana b Hijo del Fishman
Hijo de Fishman replaced ACH. Colt was far superior, but used the ropes to win anyway. Fans chanted for him before the match.
5) Ivelisse Vélez DCOR Taya Valkyrie
Fought on the ramp long enough to get the DCOR. Zumbi and Colt Cabana had to pull them apart after the match.
6) Axel b Hijo de Espanto II
7) Tommy Dreamer b Sabu
Not good reviews.
8) Mr. E & Sexy B b Hijo de Kato Kung Lee & Vengador (Monterrey) and Heddi Karaoui & Zumbi and Eita & Tomahawk T.T. [WWL TAG]
Match for vacant titles. Hijo de Kato and Vengador replaced Wagner & son, and took the pin. Mamitos were not good.
9) Cibernético, el Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Super Parka b Apolo, Ricky Banderas, Ricky Casanova
Match to honor Hector Garza. Super Parka replaced La Parka. Hercules Gomez was supposed to be on the Puerto Rican team, but it was said he couldn’t be there due to passport issues. Ricky Casanova, who was heel WWL GM on the show, ruled it would be 3-2. WWL Produce Hugo Savinovich (backed by Los Mamitos) overruled Casanova and put him in the match. Perro and Cibernetico did not get along. Cibernetico wrestled in his mask for the whole match. Super Parka tried the same, but it was pulled off. Perro double stomped Rico for the win, then Mesias and Apolo beat up Casanova after the match including a Mesias martinete.
10) Blue Demon Jr. b Big Daddy V [PWR HEAVY]
Demon kept the title. Big Daddy V seems to have lost some weight.
11) Mil Mascaras & Sicodélico Jr. b Villano III & Villano IV
Mil Mascaras working a semimain! One fall match.
12) Bobby Lashley DQ Monster Pain [WWL HEAVY]
Mistress Glenda Lee broke up a pin for the DQ, so Monster Pain kept the title. (Title usually changes hands on DQ here, but not in WWL.) Mesias got involved with the post match, helping Lashley (and being set up as next challenger?) Mesias gave martinetes to Mistress Glenda Lee and the referee.
So much intestinal damage. LuchaMania Monterrey says the building 85-90% . Arena Coliseo Monterrey often looks to be 10-15% full, and ticket prices were higher for this show, so that’s a good number. They’d probably want it to be a full house, but I can’t begin to understand how the WWL business plan works. This seems like it went a lot better than the first show anyway. WWL aired matches from the last iPPV on their TV show, so I’m sure some or all of this will turn up there or on Noches de Coliseo.
LuchaMania Monterrey has video of Mil Mascaras’ entrance. This was his first appearance in the arena since 2008. First time he’s been in a semimain here since 2004 (behind a Octagon mask vs Pentagon III’s hair.)
How does one acquire one of these t-shirts? Do I have to earn it?
CMLL announced the final En Busca de un Idolo standings. As usual, the poll ended early on the weeks where they needed to determine matchups.
260 Vangellys
250 Valiente
——————-
225 Stuka Jr.
156 Fuego
That confirms the Vangellys vs Valiente match on Friday for the championship.
Can’t find results of Arena Puebla last night in the usual places. Cinco Radio mentioned Stigma beat Espiritu Maligno to win the cibernetico and there were cage match challenges as expected. No date confirmed.
Tonight’s the big Averno vs Titan title rematch, with Titan trying to win back the title he lost due to injury. We’re also at the time of the year where title changes are are arranged to make up the numbers for the CMLL Universal Tournament, probably happening in early September. The most recent title change, Tanahashi & Liger (not a usual team in Japan but known in Mexico) winning the tag team titles seems to have happened to set them up to come to Mexico and it probably paid a fact in both recent trios title changes. The current champion
Virus (CMLL LIGHT)
Polvora (CMLL WELTER)
Dragon Rojo (CMLL MIDDLE)
Rey Escorpion (CMLL LH)
Terrible (CMLL HEAVY)
Liger (CMLL TAG)
Tanahashi (CMLL TAG)
Valiente (CMLL TRIOS)
Mistico (CMLL TRIOS)
Mascara Dorada (CMLL TRIOS, NWA WELTER)
La Sombra (NWA MIDDLE, IWGP IC)
Diamante Azul (NWA LH)
Averno (MEX WELTER)
La Mascara (MEX LH, MEX TRIOS)
Titan (MEX TRIOS)
Rush (MEX TRIOS)
(It’s too bad CMLL can’t be bothered to do real matches of any length for this tournament, because there would be some good matches.)
That’s 16 champions for 16 spots in the bracket. We learned last year that it doesn’t have to be limited to 16 – they could just ‘forget’ to include Virus again – but it pretty much has to be at least 16. Titan beating Averno tonight would reduce the field to 15, so it would have to be coupled with something like one of the double champions – La Mascara or Mascara Dorada – losing a singles title to someone else (Volador?) to fix the numbers down the road. It’s most likely these champions are frozen in place for the next couple of months and Titan does not win tonight. Will be a good match either way.
CMLL’s added a Delta vs Boby Zavala – battle of the guys with weird campana variations that desperately need names – as a lightning match which won’t air.
Sangre Azteca & Nitro aren’t making their usual trip to France this summer. The French promotion that brings them in, APC, says Sangre Azteca could not go due to “obligations in Mexico” and Nitro has a visa problem. Sangre will have to give up his title but both are expected to go in October instead.
Mil Mascaras likes the idea of Villano V’s Fuerza Imperial promotion, saying he’s helped promotions start off well before. He specifically cites AAA here, and that’s not true at all. He didn’t show up in AAA until 1996 and then only very briefly. Mil Mascaras was actually part of starting up the US based IWA promotion in 1970s, which failed, but I’m not sure how much Mil is responsible for that.

Thinking about the CMLL Universal “matches could be good if they got even like 6 minutes” point – there’s not a lot of bad quality luchadors in there.
I DREAD ANY SINGLES MATCH THEY’RE IN
Dragon Rojo (CMLL MIDDLE)
Diamante Azul (NWA LH) – though if he and Tanahashi have the same match they did last year, I will be pleased
PERFECTLY FINE IN SINGLES IF THEY WORK WITH SOMEONE GOOD
Polvora (CMLL WELTER)
Terrible (CMLL HEAVY) – this seems low, but think about a Terrible vs Diamante Azul match. Stop thinking about it, it’s too scary.
Mistico (CMLL TRIOS) – similarly, Dragon Rojo vs Mistico would be no bueno. Terrible is much better than Mistico overall
MOTIVATION WILDCARDS
Liger (CMLL TAG)
Tanahashi (CMLL TAG)
if we can only get one good match out of them, I’d prefer it to be the tag team title match
PROBABLY OKAY BUT YOU’VE HAD THE SAME MATCH 20 TIMES IN THE LAST THREE YEARS
La Mascara (MEX LH, MEX TRIOS)
I AM EXCITED TO SEE THEM IN SINGLES MATCHES AT ANY TIME
Virus (CMLL LIGHT)
Rey Escorpion (CMLL LH)
Valiente (CMLL TRIOS)
Mascara Dorada (CMLL TRIOS, NWA WELTER)
La Sombra (NWA MIDDLE, IWGP IC)
Averno (MEX WELTER)
Titan (MEX TRIOS)
Rush (MEX TRIOS)
I hope either Tanahashi or Liger faces Diamante Azul and start to stiff him after his German Suplex almost paralyzes them for life
