taped 2013-02-22 @ Arena Mexico
La Máscara vs Averno in a lightning match: a stripped down version of their frequent 2011 match, getting in the usual high points and doing a bit of teased finisher stealing. Good for the time they had, though it seemed more heated watching it the first time then when I came back for the recap. Averno could use a win someday, but I’m kind of glad it didn’t happen here so there would be no reason for them to restart this feud. La Mascara had a lot of singles matches with Averno in 2011, and a lot of singles match with Volador in 2012 – I wonder who’ll be it for him in 2013? (Hoping no one and someone else gets that schedule.)
Guerrero Maya Jr., Rey Cometa, Stuka Jr. vs Misterioso Jr., Namajague, Shigeo Okumura: good build up match. CMLL seemed to decide the best way to build this match was to have the rudos be Sneaky Japanese, which does not make for the best finishes. CMLL referees also do not make for good finishes (though Maya is usually better than this.) Still, all the action up to the finish was pretty good, and I hope that’s the case on Dos Leyendas as well.
Ángel de Oro, La Sombra, Máscara Dorada vs Mr. Águila, Psicosis, Volador Jr.: really good formula match; this was all the usual order of things until the sudden finish (and then the even sudden-er editing to the end of the show), but both sides looked really good. Dorada and Sombra looked great as usual, and Angel de Oro looked more motivated and creative here than he had in other matches. Rudos looked like good making the técnicos look good and did well as a team. The Volador/Sombra feud may seem a little old hat if you’ve been tracking down their matches since 2011, but it’s clear the crowd sees this feud as a new/big thing. Announcers never seemed to bring up last week’s Rey del Aire final, which was weird.
