Máscara Dorada vs Pólvora for the CMLL World Welterweight Championship: Match was fine, though I liked some of Polvora’s other recent title matches better. I’m not sure why but, putting feelings about the bigger picture here, this would’ve been a much better match had Dorada just won than lost. Mostly I feel this way because Mascara Dorada is so much better than when he started this reign, much more well rounded than last year’s four belt champion. Pólvora seems slightly better, and would’ve gotten credit for hanging with Dorada with a loss, but this much is hard to to accept. Pólvora really needed a moment to prove he’s at this level; maybe his brother’s alternate finisher was supposed to be that, but it never came across that way.
Diamante Azul vs Tama Tonga: Charitable to say Diamante Azul needs to work thru his less appealing singles matches before he figures out a format to have good ones, and this one was one he was working thru. Azul didn’t really do everything in his playbook like you’d expect for a big match – no corner senton, no even tease of the German suplex, no press slam – this was much more a slow paced Tama Tonga dominated match. Didn’t do a much for me.
