Lucha Libre in Japan

11/24 NJPW: Rush [O] & Diamante Azul b Yujiro Takahashi [X] & Masato Tanaka [O]
Yujiro called Rush an exotico before the match. Rush was not happy! Azul & Rush are 2-1, in 2nd, only behind the team they just beat.  They have tag champs Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr. tomorrow.

The AAA luchadors headed to WAVE/Reina de Reinas show this week – Fabi, Sexi Star, Jennifer Blake are in the tournament, while Pimpinela, Fenix and Lolita are in a mixed tag – should be en route to Japan now.

CMLL last ran Copa Junior – a tournament of all second generation wrestlers – in 2010. It was won by Dragon Rojo Jr. (and we were all supposed to forget about him boasting of making in lucha libre without having any family connections.) As in 2010, this looks to be a 3 week, 20 luchador tournament. The odd sized 10 man blocks mean the seeding battle royals are actually important: the final two survivors skip ahead two rounds to face off in the quarterfinals. It also means this is a 15 match night, so prepare for some quick matches.

CMLL says this will be the last tournament of the year. They’d try for more, but there’s only so many months. Block B will be next week, the previously hyped British night. CMLL’s been pushing La Sombra vs Ultimo Guerrero for that show. Past shows with both a singles tournament and a singles main event have not worked out well. The main event usually is disappointingly short but the entire show runs long. I don’t know what they’re going to do.

The final would take place on 12/14. I believe that’s CMLL ‘big match’ for the year end. There should be a major feud in place or a even an announced main event 20 days out, and there’s nothing of the sort going on. The Guerreros vs Escorpion’s group feud has been shuffled to the secondary shows, and gets no more attention then the Tuareg vs Cancebrero feud. Nothing else has been started. CMLL running a tournament because they don’t feel like doing a decent feud ending is the equivalent of AAA throwing a bunch of people in a cage because they don’t feel like doing a feud ending. (It’s up to IWRG to save us from the end of the year doldrums!)

Changing Puma King to Puma is dumb – and note that no one on TV seems to know this change has been made! – but Puma King facing Rey Cometa is never dumb. If Tigre Blanco wrestles in the segunda, it’d be his first match since September.

10 thoughts to “Atlantis leads his team to win, Copa Junior”

  1. Man I had to look up who Mascara Dorada’s father was – guess that’s not one of those facts they hit us over the head with week in and week out.

  2. I wonder how many wrestlers on the CMLL roster DON’T qualify for the Copa Junior. Can’t be more than 10.

  3. I have to look stuff like that up when you make a guess!

  4. Funny seeing this weeks WON credit TNA and ROH for inspiring WWE to begin tv with a highlight reel of last weeks episode.

How many times has AAA done that in the last 10 years? Almost every week.

All popular weekly dramas like Mad Men and Sons of Anarchy do the same.

  5. for the first half of 2012?? Hijo del Santo says he’s preparing a new photo book about his father, for release in the first half of 2012????
