TripleMania XX, part 1 (online only, and speculation about that)

As promised, AAA put the first part of TripleMania on their website this afternoon.

The show includes the Relevos AAA, Perro Aguayo being inducted into the AAA HOF, and the Jeff Jarrett & Kurt Angle vs LA Park & Electroshock match. I have not watched it yet, but I am told they hyped the cage match and the ensuing apuesta match for next week. I would presume the Consejo/Octagon vs Psycho Circus/La Parka match will be squeezed on as well, leaving the two big matches for the third week. These are the only important facts you must know, but the circumstances around this YouTube post allow me to do what this blog does best most often: over-analyzing the details.

The big news is this did not air on the national Televisa broadcast. Instead, they reran the first week of the Queretaro taping. (It did air on the syndicated show, which is basically locally Televisa affiliates. Not everything is lock step.) My belief is Televisa’s ban on Arena Ciudad de Mexico goes as far as to prohibit AAA from airing any event that took place in the arena; the only way people can/will see TripleMania is if they were there, or if they know to look on the internet.

AAA’s been promoting this hard to people who are following them on Twitter/Facebook already, but a lot of their audience is not. Those people who just follow by watching the TV likely have no clue what the deal is; I know I watched last week’s TV and thought for sure they were telling me I’d be seeing TripleMania on TV this week. WWE, which has a larger fan base and one more likely to be using the internet, averages between 20,000 to 60,000 for recent full length shows, getting as high as 100K. Those are good numbers for the internet, but a tiny percentage of people who watch the same shows on TV. I would expect AAA to have the same issues.

(A lot of it is just having the most SEO lucky words and getting related clicks; the Emma Huevo vs Sexi Star match I’ve got up has been viewed around 45,000 because it happens to come up with a lot of Noches de Futbol videos. The other recent kiddie pool match has 1/10th that many views. I suspect that video will end getting more views than the TripleMania episodes, but I’m not sure if that’s funny or sad. A bit of both?)

You might recall my belief that all the extra TV tapings AAA was doing meant they were probably skipping over TripleMania. (My theory was they were just going to save it until the end of the year, so not quite right.) Dorian Roldan set us straight:

except, that doesn’t appear to be the case now, which means either Dorian wasn’t in the loop (unlikely!), Dorian was not telling the truth (unlikely!) or this was a last minute call (likely!) Update: as late as Friday, AAA was sent out a press release stating TripleMania would air on Televisa this Sunday as well as the internet. Definitely last minute call.

Which also means AAA is as caught off guard as the rest of us and may not actually have a plan of what to do with their TV right now. They can’t quite just roll with what they have…

unless they expand the Expo to two tapings – and they might have added a match to do that, I haven’t had a chance to really look at it, this post may be an elaborate gimmick to get a post up before Sunday night deadline – but even then, there had to be another reason they were taping in advance in the first place (QPPC?) and that reason probably prevents them from moving up the taping a couple weeks. AAA choices seem to be to airing reruns for two more weeks (killing all momentum), adding another taping (perhaps not possible or they might have done in the first place; and where?) or hastily producing a filler show from the AAA offices (an expensve hassle, maybe the best option)

This whole situation also probably possibly means AAA posting episodes online is likely to be a TripleMania only thing, which is a sad thing for us people who can’t actually get this show under normal circumstances. It’s also the least of AAA’s problems at the moment.
