Day: August 17, 2012
Guadalajara, IWRG, Lucha Libre Expo, El Luchador, QPPC
CMLL (TUE) 08/14/2012 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) El Divino & Virgo b El Hippie & Èvola
2) Disturbio & Inquisidor b Leo & Sky Kid
3) Smaker b Arkángel de la Muerte, Starman, Demonio Maya, Triton, Skándalo, Black Metal, Magnum [cibernetico, OCCIDENTE MIDDLE, #1 Contenders]
order of elimination: Magnum out first (not mentioned), Black Metal (by Demonio Maya), Skandalo (by Triton), Triton (Arkangel), Demonio Maya (Starman), Starman (Arkangel), Arkangel (by Smacker.) The GDL regular advances to the final on 08/28.
4) Psicosis & Rey Escorpión b Hijo del Fantasma & Sagrado
Psicosis yanked Fantasma’s mask and rolled him up for the win.
5) Mr. Niebla b Máximo
One fall match. Niebla won clean with Nieblina in a match filled with the expected silliness.
Smaker wining here probably means a rudo is winning the other semifinal – Virus, Raziel, Sadico or el Barbaro.
CMLL (WED) 08/15/2012 Arena Queretaro [Haciendo La Lucha]
4) Drabek I, Drabek II, Perro Del Ring, Principe b Diamante, Máximo, Pequeno Otomi, Ursus
5) Fuego Latino, La Máscara, Místico b Euforia, Mephisto, Rey Escorpión
Tecnicos took 2/3. Mistico submitted Mephisto with an armscissors.
There’s also a post match interview with Mistico. No mention of attendance and no pictures.
IWRG (THU) 08/16/2012 Arena Naucalpan [Black Terry Jr. (flickr), The Gladiatores]
1) Comando Negro & Eita b Dinamic Black & Radical
Radical’s debut on a main show
2) Golden Magic ?? Chicano
No finished specified. Chicano wants a shot at Golden Magic, but does not weight enough to be a welterweight!
3) Dr. Cerebro, Relampago, Veneno b Alan Extreme, Eterno, Heddi Karaoui
Alan Extreme replaced Danny Casas.
4) Solar I b Negro Navarro [FLLM MASTER]
Solar kept his title in the usual match between the two.
5) Cien Caras Jr., Hijo de LA Park, Hijo de Máscara Año 2000 b El Hijo del Medico Asesino, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Pirata Morgan
Medico’s return to IWRG. Mascara pulled Hijo del Pirata’s mask and pinned him for the win.
Today’s CMLL show features Volador and Mr. Niebla in the main event, and Rush & Terrible among those in the CMLL Universal tournament. The CMLL Anniversary show should be 4-6 weeks away, and it’s about time for CMLL to pick a main event. On last night’s Figure Four Daily, Dr. Lucha suggested Rush & Terrible might have some incident which sets up a hair match contract signing at next Wednesday’s scheduled CMLL press conference. An announcement of the Anniversary date and the main event makes a lot of sense for the press conference, though I find it hard to believe it’ll be any one feud when CMLL’s pushing multiple ones at the same time. Tonight should start to illuminate CMLL’s actual plans.
The Lucha Libre Expo kicks off today. AULL and IWRG run big shows, and the night ends with a concert.
Great wacky promos for El Luchador Season 2. Also, Shocker teaches us Mexico City slang. Their website posted a schedule for web chats they’ll be doing at the expo:
Friday
3p: Tania (intro) & Felino
4p: Princesa Blanca
5p: Shocker
6p: Rey Bucanero
Saturday
3p: Tania (intro) & Rey Bucanero
4p: Estrellita
5p: Dragon Lee/Mistico
6p: Shocker
AAA hasn’t posted anything about the QPPC kickoff press conference this week in Monterrey. There a few boxing focused articles, and this interview with Joaquin Roldan who says fans should turn out for the spot show that accompanies the tryout session, because AAA does not plan to tape in Monterrey this year. AAA’s TV schedule always appear to be fluid, but if that’s how it ends up staying, that means Arena Monterrey is out as a venue for a Heroes Inmortales or a Guerra de Titanes. They’ve already run Rey de Reyes in Guadalajara and don’t like to repeat big venues in a year, so either the big shows will be in older places like the bull ring in Puebla, or in smaller venues than we’re used to seeing in recent years.
Back on QPPC: LuchaMania Monterrey also has the schedule of events and photos from the press conference.
Sobre el Ring (SLP) has highlights of the Kukukklan vs Diamante Azul title match. Kukukklan is the former Mr. Jack from the dying days of the UWA, and also wrestled as Black Demon. New Mistico is headed to SLP on 0/02.
Lado B has a neat article about the Puebla lucha libre license certification last week. Psicosis II explains he still has a Tijuana wrestling license, because getting a Puebla license was impossible unless you found the right people to bribe. Aspring professionals Nube Negra (a fan of Ultimo Guerrero and Super Fly) and Perro Negro (the blind luchador who tried out; he’s also a DJ) are also interviewed. Results are to be announced on Monday.
The Depomart Japanese lucha libre photographer/mask seller page says Alberto del Rio’s brother – who just turned up in WWE’s FCW developmental territory – wrestled as “Dark Phoenix” previous. That may be translate to Fenix Negro or Fenix Negra or something else. I can’t actually find any results by that name; it must have been very local and small show stuff.
Cibernetico and Perro Aguyo Jr. have a fight on a Cadena3 talks show. Or, more accurately, Cibernetico and about seven Perros del Mal have a fight on a press conference and it goes badly for Mr. Cibernetico. This would probably be more effective if AAA was actually running this match, but such is life. Why is Mr. Consejo Toscano hanging out with these guys? (Beating up Cibernetico is just bonds people who don’t get along, I guess!)
IWL, which hasn’t run shows in a while, says they’ll be on TV in September.
LuchaWorld has a look at upcoming posters, the latest Slammin’ Stan, and KrisZ’s news report.
Bill has highlights of 05/15/2012 CMLL Guadalajara.
Rob has highlights of 07/31/2012 CMLL.
Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame
The WON HOF ballot got sent out last night. It’s basically the same lucha libre list as last year, so I could just link to last year’s post and not have to think about this at all.
Last year, I voted yes for Atlantis, Cien Caras, Blue Panther, Huracan Ramirez, and Villano III. Nothing’s changed with them, I’ll be voting for them.
Dr. Wagner Sr. was left off the nominations last year due to a clerical error. He’s back on this year’s ballot. I’ll be voting for him.
Dr. Alfonso Morales was eligible last year, but I failed to notice he was on the non-wrestler list. I’ll be voting for him this year.
I did not vote for Vampiro or Perro Aguayo Jr. last year because I didn’t feel they met the critera. That is unchanged. Perro Jr. is closer to making the cut this year. I still am not voting for him but I can now see it happening in the next few years, and I didn’t think that was likely this time last year.
I did not vote for Karloff Lagarde because I couldn’t find enough evidence that he was great enough a draw, great enough a wrestler, or historically important enough to vote for him. I’m still haven’t found it, but I’m still looking. Help?
I did not vote for LA Park and Dr. Wagner Jr. but nearly did. Both have spent another year as the tent poles of AAA. I’m indecisive about what I will do with them, but suspect I’ll be voting yes on both after I watch TripleMania.
