Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. vs Dr. Wagner Jr., title match notes

AAA has interviews hyping the Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. feud. That rivalry is strange; Mascara wasn’t treated as anything special within Consejo up until he get got the pin at Rey de Reyes to start this issue. The only explanation I can figure out is this is part of a plan to call back to first TripleMania. Konnan losing his career to Cien Caras is the match that’s most remembered from the show, but the semimain was a pretty significant match: Perro Aguayo taking Mascara Ano 2000 Sr.’s mask. Perhaps the plan is to repeat the apuesta stip for this year’s show, or even just do the singles match to set up the mask match next year. It would explain M2AK Jr.’s presence in Consejo though not justify it; he’s not much good and it’d be a shame if the three big singles matches at TripleMania were Perro/Mesias (not good last time they tried it), Wagner/Mascara (not good) and LA Park/Jarrett (not at the level of the last two LA Park matches; will still be a notable deal but Jarrett didn’t seem as over at Rey de Reyes.) I hope I’m misreading all of this, AAA can do better (and probably will in the earlier matches.)

Both Pierrothito and Rey Bucanero put up their championships tonight at Arena Mexico. Both Electrico & Maximo have the potential to win, though the status quo is always the favorite. Electrico challenged Pierrothito for the national lightweight title and lost in 2009, but has won the last two meetings between them in lightning matches. Maximo also challenged and lost to Bucanero for the same title in 2009 in Guadalajara, then had a highly comic feud with Rey (and Zacarias) last year in Guadalajara where Bucanero was supposed to go on a date with Maximo if he lost. He did, but the whole thing got lost in Maximo’s flirtation of leaving CMLL. Neither title change would be unjust. Pierrothito is the best mini rudo in Mexico, but Electrico has improved a lot and is easily the best young mini tecnico. Maximo seems to have gotten in better shape this year and Bucanero only seems to have the title to set up a story about all of TRT having titles, but they’ve never really followed that up with Tiger.

I don’t suspect any of this to mean a thing for attendance; these title belts don’t help get feuds over.

The DF commission sent out PR with two more of the tournament finals for the Distrio Federal weight division title belts. In total, they’ve announced:

DF Light: Astral vs Demus 3:16
DF Welter: Leono vs Sensei
DF Middle: Hijo del Signo vs Triton
DF Light Heavyweight: Hijo del Fantasma vs Histeria
DF Heavyweight: still to be decided

No sign of the actual tournament brackets. It’d be nice if we ever got those to see if they actually made sense. Signo Sr. & Fantasma Sr. must be thrilled their sons made it to the finals of title tournaments that one is promoter of and the other is sponsoring, I’m sure they’ll be supporting them strongly in the title matches on 04/15.

EAW has announced a six show tour, running from next Tuesday (04/17) thru 04/26, running outside of Mexico City. It’s their first shows since October. No luchadors have been announced; they’ve brought in US wrestlers to work with Mexican indy wrestlers in the past, to mixed success.

  1. I get the feeling we’re being fucked with. Cometa is never booked in these semi-main events, let alone rarely is he booked over guys like Fuego, Sangre Azteca and even Diamante. Feels like his name is just being listed but the promotion knows he isn’t going to be at the show. Maybe this is revenge on me for harassing Magnus on twitter.
