CMLL (FRI) 03/02/2012 Arena Mexico [CMLL]
***Dos Leyendas 2011: Salvador Lutteroth & Bobby Bonales***
1) Misterioso Jr., Namajague, Rey Escorpion b Fuego, Titán, Triton
Rudos took the first and third, Escorpion dropping Fuego with something close to a piledriver. Fuego was strechered out.
2) Averno, Mr. Águila, Olímpico b Ángel de Oro, Super Porky, Valiente
Rudos take the match in straight falls.
3) Marcela b Ayumi [lightning]
Marcela wins via top rope Michinoku Driver in 9:07, then challenged for a title shot. Ayumi accepted.
4) Diamante Azul, La Máscara, Marco Corleone DQ Rey Bucanero, Último Guerrero, Volador Jr.
Tecnicos in straight falls. Volador yanked Diamante Azul’s mask for the DQ.
5) Atlantis & Mr. Niebla b Rush & Terrible [natl pi, final]
Team Rush/Terrible took fall one, team Atlantis/Niebla/Zacarias fall 2. Fall 3 came down to Rush and Niebla, and Niebla won clean for the tournament win. Rush and Terrible fought after the bell. Rush yelled at Terrible and the crowd, and Terrible responded with a hair match challenge.
6) Negro Casas DRAW Blue Panther [hair]
Panther won the first with his surprise fujiwara, Negor took the second with a casita, both short falls. Long third fall, with Panther doing the only dive of the match (a tope) and lots of near falls. A few more near falls on the way in, leading to a small package – with both men pinned! Fans rooted for a fourth fall, but the decision was draw. Both men got their heads shaved, though Negro attacked Panther before he got his hair cut. Panther challenged Negro to a title match, and the two fought more.

New barriers were up around ringside (said for safety, but with more ads.) CMLL returned two referees in the ring. Show led off with the usual dancing, including Mije, Monito and Zacarias (who ended up brawling.) Bobby Bonales’ family was honored after the third match, leading right into the Diamante Azul introduction.

Attendance guesses are all over the place. At the very least, they had half full and probably well exceeded it. Better number later.

recap

Argenis, Atomic Boy, Fenix vs Dark Dragon, Tigre Cota, Tito Santana: Very strong opening match, strong from the get go. Atomic Boy’s new (?) patriotic colors outfit looks good. It is a bit odd for Fenix to go from semimain event of the year end show to the opener on the next show, but I guess they thought it was odd he was in the semimian event to begin with.

Extreme Tiger, cut from the Televisa version

Dr. Wagner Jr. & Extreme Tiger vs LA Park & Octagón: The national version makes this seem more strictly Park/Wagner than it actually is – there’s a good sequence between Santana & Tiger (and two Tiger dives) that’s only in the regional version. It’s much better than way. Both versions have the same lack of an actual finish, which is a bit annoying. Octagon is making more of an effort, but this bit of other people running in and wrestling half the match for him with no attempt at explanation is a still annoying. Also, still don’t want to see this Octagon/Joaquin match. I totally missed that Toscano wasn’t on this taping at all – did he already screw something up at this point?

Perro wins

Cibernético, Extreme Tiger, Joe Lider vs Chessman, La Parka, Nicho el Millionario: Two straight finishes of “El Consejo runs in, hits everyone” is not really the way to go thru life. Tiger didn’t repeat a lot between matches, but I’m not sure it helped him to be in both matches (and he seemed in a lot of pain.) By the standard of who was involved, match was good. Crowd still loves Cibernético.

El Mesías & Jack Evans vs el Hijo del Perro Aguayo & Héctor Garza: This was probably longer than it needed to be, but it was fine. Perro is not the old Perro, but he not the 2009-10 Perro either, he’s an acceptable rudo. Garza is the same guy he was as a rudo over in CMLL. There was only a couple moments where it seemed like Jack was about to win, but then it wasn’t as match with many real near falls to begin with. It seemed like Perro proved his point, and not as much that this was something that’d keep going.

Consejo vs Navarros, Dos Leyeandas, Jarrett/Mesias, new CMLL tournament

1) Matrix Jr. & Pacto Negro b Galaxy & Sky Ángel
Completely different match than the one advertised (Astro de Plata/Kiwoc vs Acero/Mr. Temples.) Siad to be error filled.
2) Chicano & Tritón b Gemelo Fantastico I & Gemelo Fantastico II
3) Carta Brava Jr., Chico Che, Imposible b Aero Boy, Dinamic Black, Golden Magic
4) Freyser, Suicida, Trauma II b Alemán, Eterno, Violento Jack
Aleman, the debuting German, is of course a Nazi. Segura’s back here for the first time in 9 months (after some issues about working IWL shows.) Freyser and Violento are feuding.
5) Angelico, Negro Navarro, Trauma I b Pirata Morgan, Texano Jr., Toscano
Tecnicos in straight falls. Rudos jumped the tecnicos, but Navarro snuck in a submission on Pirata. Pirata Morgan fouled Trauma I in the second, btu Truama II snuck out and fouled Pirata Morgan to set up the pin. Consejo destroyed the Navarros after the match.

Negro Casas says the interesting thing about his match with Blue Panther is they are from the same generation, he has no particular strategy because he’s not sure how Panther will attack him, and this match won’t end the rivalry but just give them one more reason to be angry with each other.

Volador says he has a new outfit for tonight. CMLL Gaceta has a note up explaining how to get to Arena Mexico and where to buy the tickets, telling them not to buy from scalpers.

AAA says Jeff Jarrett will defend the AAA world title versus Mesias at Rey de Reyes. Announcers have brought Jarrett up on commentary, but no TNA wrestler has been in AAA since Guerra de Titanes.

Arena Lopez Mateos will have a two day expo on March 17 and 18, leading into an anniversary show on March 19th with Blue Demon & Daga vs Mesias & Joe Lider.

Lineups

CMLL (TUE) 03/06/2012 Arena Mexico
***March Fan Appreciation Show (Tuesday)***
1) Freesbe & Robin vs Apocalipsis & Inquisidor
2) Metálico & Starman vs Nosferatu & Puma King
3) Dragon Lee & Titán vs Cancerbero & Cholo and Camaleón & Soberano Jr. and Bobby Zavala & Stigma [torneo Sangre Nueva]
4) Diamante, La Máscara, Sagrado vs Kráneo, Morphosis, Psicosis
5) Atlantis, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Tiger [MEX TRIOS]

Again, I think the Atlantida team are slight favorites, but a title change is no surprise.

They’re really not giving Diamante a new name. They’re just going to have both Diamante and Diamante Azul. Everyone will be confused.

Random tournament time! There’s zero explanation of this Sangre Nueva tournament, perhaps that’s coming later. It’s a wide variance of teams: Dragon Lee & Titan are way above the rest of this crew, Cancerbero & Cholo are about two matches apart normally (and neither really qualifies as “new blood”), Camaleon is not teaming with eternal amigo Freesbe and Stigma appears to be the Puebla kid (and Panico/Skandalo family member) who’s switching sides for this tournament.

Nosferatu returns, maybe, again.

IWRG (THU) 03/15/2012 Arena Naucalpan
1) Astro de Plata & Astro Rey Jr. vs Pacto Negro & Polifacético
2) Charly Madrid & Chicano vs Comando Negro & The Mummy
3) Dinamic Black, Golden Magic, Suicida vs Acero, Alemán, Imposible
4) Freyser, Trauma I, Trauma II vs Alan Extreme, Eterno, Violento Jack
5) Hijo de LA Park vs Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., Mascara Sagrada Jr., Halcon 78 Jr., Bestia 666, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Canek Jr., Apolo Estrada Jr., Ultramán Jr., Carta Brava Jr. [#1 Contenders, JUNIOR DE JUNIORS]

Winner gets a shot at Trauma I’s title.

2012 Dos Leyendas preview

reminder: I’ll be hosting a chat and posting live results later tonight. Chat starts around 8:30 pm CT.

All time record (6 known matches)

Negro Casas: 2 wins
Blue Panther: 1 win
draws: 3 – a double disqualification, a time limit draw, and one other draw

Blue Panther vs Negro Casas in a hair match is only happening tonight because it did not happen in December and because the Shocker/Blue Panther vs Negro Casas/Felino hair match did not happen in December. CMLL was strongly considering both matches before deciding to wait for better business for the bigger match, but they got close enough to running those alternates that they surely had a finish in mind. If they had done the tag match, Blue Panther & Shocker were certainty winning, and that’s the strongest reason I believe Blue Panther will win tonight. CMLL was ready to have Negro Casas lose his hair, and Negro Casas looked ready to lose his hair.

The case for Negro Casas is he hasn’t won one of these in a while and the whole Casas family has been losing a lot. I don’t have a good way to dismiss those points. My best reasoning is the Casas family seems unconcerned (and maybe content) with losing these matches, and the tecnico side is much weaker than the rudo side and could use any victory they get. It’s just Atlantis and Panther as “veteran” top tecnicos right now, and Panther’s probably not a top guy if he he’s bald after this.

Recent Arena Mexico major shows
2011.12.16: Blue Panther DQ Felino [hair]
2011.09.30: Rey Bucanero loses cage match [hair]
2011.06.17: La Mascara b Averno [mask]
2011.03.18: Terrible & Texano b Maximo & Super Porky [hair]
2010.12.03: Rey Bucanero b Mr. Aguila [hair]

Negro Casas vs Blue Panther is different from those matches in that it’s not a younger star(s) getting a meaingful win to cement them at a high level, and it’s not the middle part of a longer storyline. Bucanero vs Mr. Aguila is the closest comparision, but that’s more a matter of circumstance; the intention was always to do Rey Bucanero vs Charly Manson as a follow up, only Charly Manson decided he’d rather be in AAA. That also makes this harder to figure – there’s no (teased or real) next step requiring someone to win.

The Bucanero/Aguila show, which also had a minis mask match and appearances from Latin Lover & Mistico, drew 8,300 fans. The Invasion idea was no longer a draw by the point and Negro Casas & Blue Panther are bigger stars, but it was a stronger overall moment in CMLL business than it is now. My guess is CMLL will draw around that number for tonight’s show, and that would be a very good outcome for 2012 CMLL. One single show does not determine everything when they’re you are running three shows a week every week, but it’d show CMLL is still able of strongly building up a match when they put their minds to it, and this has definitely been the strongest built match since Mascara vs Averno.

The rest of the show, including the tournament, is largely irrelevant. Atlantis & Mascara Dorada won the same tournament last year, received trophies, and the whole thing went without mention or reference for the following 11 months. I suspect Rush & Terrible will win this year, to break Atlantis’ streak, to continue the build up for those two, and to balance out the outcome for next Tuesday’s TRT/Atlantida recap. Diamante Azul’s performance and his reception is more important than the outcome, though it’d nice to be a win. CMLL rarely does tecnico/tecnico title matches, so Ayumi defeating Marcela is an easy substitute to confirm her win and move her on to whatever’s she’s up to while in. (Which might not be much, since Ayumi defending the title on the next REINA show seems likely.)

There are rumors of someone returning, be it Alex Koslov, someone from AAA, or someone from oblivion, but I’m not sure anyone should really want that spot. Black Warrior made the surprise return last year, and look how that one worked out! There’s a decent shot CMLL may run a larger than average show on 03/30 to annoy Hijo del Santo, so perhaps they’ll start something for that show. Most likely, the biggest angle developments happening tonight will be happening over in Toluca.
