top six stories of the last two weeks

  • Septiembre Negro passed away
  1. Hector Garza, the current CMLL Heavyweight Champion, announced he was leaving CMLL on Friday. Garza went out to appear on Perros del Mal and AAA TV tapings while still working his previously announced CMLL matches without being punished in any obvious way (and even wearing his Perros del Mal shirt on the most recent show.) Garza did not bring the title belt to the other promotions, and CMLL has not even slightly acknowledged this in any way.
  2. CMLL and AAA are back in their main Televisa slot, though still only one hour and only until the next thing Televisa can find to kick them out again (probably the first weekend of December.) AAA is keeping it’s 2 hour locally syndicated show. CMLL kept it’s main matches on Fox Sports, but seems to be going back to usual patterns since.
  3. El Hijo del Santo resumed promoting Todos x el Todos shows in Mexico City, drawing around 1,600 for a show based on older names and focusing on the Santo/Solitario & Angel Blanco show. This show did not draw well, though a Monterrey show with some of this crew and ex-WWE-ers drew 6,000.
  4. Also on that show: Mascarita Dorada, who’s managed to be connected to WWE (tryout) and AAA (appearing on their most recent tapings) and also work out his remaining CMLL matches.
  5. The AAA/FULL/Tinieblas show took place at Palacio de los Deportes. No attendance estimate, but the show was (predictably) built around the father and son – Scorpio Jr. won the new FULL title, only to be immediately challenged by one of them, and Tinieblas Jr. beat Electroshock in the main event.
  6. Guerra de Titanes will be 12/16 in Puebla. AAA will not be in San Luis Potosi today – the taping was canceled 48 hours out.

Other Notes

  • CMLL and NJPW announced more joint shows in Tokyo for next January.
  • Apolo Dantes took back over Arena Coliseo Guadalajara, though there’s been no apparent effect of the change in management
  • King Drako lost the annual Castle of Terror match
  • Super Fly was kicked of the La Sociedad faction and called a second match wrestler by the tecnicos.
  • Averno and La Mascara are setting up another title match.
  • The two Hijo de Rey Misterios are feuding in Tijuana.
  • Perros del Mal TV taping also included Super Nova and Celetial winning a title
  • Trauma I won an IWRG royal rumble to earn a shot at Rey del Ring champion Pantera
  • Lucha POP’s Discipulo de Oro tournament finished with no winner (for now) when Dante broke his leg in two places.
  • Daga, one of the many people who’ve qualifed for the finals of AAA’s talent search contest, turned up on AAA TV before the tournament finished.
  • Notable title defenses: Mascara Dorada (CMLL Welterweight), Princea Blanca (Mexican Women’s), Rush (NWA Light Heavyweight)
  • Notable injuries: Villano V, Drago, Zayco, Nosferatu

CMLL jumps, El Luchador, Zayco, Dr. X, Todos x El Todos

Not a lot of news outside that AAA taping.

No full results from Puebla, but the rudos won the semimain, and Mascara Dorada beat Dragon Rojo in the special singles main event. As you’ll see below, that finish sets up a tag title match next week, Dragon Rojo and Ultimo Guerrero putting the tag team titles on the line versus Mascara Dorada and…Shocker.  Mascara Dorada & Atlantis have won CMLL’s tag team tournament two years straight, Atlantis has a few issues with the Guerreros, and Atlantis is not in this match. Probably tells you which way this is going (if you didn’t figure it out by being in Puebla.)

There are rumors other CMLL people are looking to jump. I have no doubt it’s true; people are always looking around for better deals. It’s another thing to actually make those moves. Guys like Hector Garza and Mascarita Dorada have the confident to do so because they’ve made them before and did not lose their place. Not everyone is going to feel that way. I still feel like there will be more people who leave, just because a turnaround doesn’t feel like it’s coming any time soon. Blue Panther vs Negro Casas will be fun and may even spark some interest over a short term if people actually believe they’re going to do that match (a trust CMLL needs to rebuild), but that match seems unlikely to start a long term recovery. I’m not sure there’s any match CMLL can do that alone could turn things around; there are many things headed in the wrong direction that all need to be turned around to fix things, and it’s unclear if the people at the very top have the stomach for it.

I liked El Luchador better this week. I don’t want to spoil it for everyone, but it was very focused this week, with a lot of the previous storylines all but ignored, and tons of CMLL guys making three second cameos. Magnus continues to come off very poorly – both in the task, and the great segment before hand where an arrogant Magnus questioned the press guy about why he wasn’t getting this great opportunity neither of them would specific, while they both just happened to be standing in front of a large picture of Mistico. Subtle! The Bucanero/Sombra final of their cibernetico got the most time of any match they’ve shown so far, and they’ve set up Bucanero vs Fantasma as a big deal. Good Shocker comedy too.

During the show, we do find out Euforia (and family) is a mask/costumer. I couldn’t help think that he really should just make Nosferatu some Cancerbero gear and see if anyone notices. Or maybe he’s the holdout from letting his old friend in the gang? It also puts a whole new spin on the Tuareg vs Cancerbero rivalry – it’s a turf war between Hooligan and Euforia over outfitng the midcard.

Next week’s show looks to be on the Mascara vs Averno match.

Zayco was hurt Sunday off a Robin hurracarrana, Zayco’s head driven into the mat on the move. The medical report says he lost consciousness, but recovered and was checked out a hospital. He’ll be sidelined a week before being re-examined.

Llaves and Candados have a lot of hype on their facebook for Sunday’s #1 contenders battle royal. Of note, the Puerto Rican guy here now using the name Rico Rodriguez is the former Furor, and there’s a Core vs Demencia feud over who’s more extreme.

Lineup

CMLL (SUN) 11/20/2011 Arena Mexico
1) Enrique Vera Jr. & Soberano Jr. vs a replacement for Zayco & Camorra
2) Hombre Bala Jr., Sensei, Super Halcon Jr. vs Apocalipsis, Rayo Tapatío I, Rayo Tapatío II
3) Black Warrior, Hijo del Fantasma, Sangre Azteca vs Euforia, Vangelis, Virus
4) Atlantis vs Volador Jr., Jushin Lyger, Último Guerrero, Shocker, Averno, Super Porky, Negro Casas, La Máscara, Felino, Máximo, Terrible, Metro, Texano, Delta, Rey Bucanero [cibernetico]

Same sort of Trofeo Revolucion Mexicana tournament they’re running in Guadalajara.

That semimain tecnico trio is a fantastic collection of the doomed and undesired.

Nothing symbolizes the lack of internal communication in CMLL than one person sending out an article explaining how Zayco will be out of action and another sending out a lineup with Zayco on it. CMLL really needs to improve how they communicate with the public better, but they can’t do that until they start to improve in how they communicate with each other.

Cholo? Probably Cholo.

CMLL (MON) 11/21/2011 Arena Puebla
1) Lestat & Stigma vs Arissma & Espiritu Maligno
2) Dragon Lee, Fuego, Pegasso vs Arkángel de la Muerte, Skándalo, Virus
3) Black Warrior, Máximo, Valiente vs El Alebrije, Olímpico, Psicosis
4) Atlantis, La Sombra, Rush vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Texano
5) Dragón Rojo Jr. & Último Guerrero vs Máscara Dorada & Shocker [CMLL TAG]

Rudos are trying for defense 7 versus the Guadalajara pair.

CMLL NVC (SUN) 12/04/2011 Arena San Juan Pantitlan

Dr. X memorial show. Main event is listed as CMLL vs Indepedents, but only Fuerza Guerrera is an interloper.

Todos x el Todos (THU) 12/15/2011 Gimnasio Juan De La Barrera
1) Rossy Moreno & Sexy Lady vs La Vaquerita & Ludark Shaitan
2) Mascarita Plateada vs El Lobito [WWA MINI]
3) Solar I vs El Dandy [FLLM MASTER]
4) Blue Demon Jr. vs Ray Mendoza Jr. [PWR HEAVY]
5) Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Cien Caras Jr. [WWA HEAVY]
6) El Hijo Del Santo vs Angel Blanco Jr. [WWA WELTER]

Lineup via here. All the tecnicos are champions. All the tecnicos are probably going to be champions; only the Solar one might change hands. There’s nothing better to prove how worthless title belts are than to run a show where everyone has one. I like to think LUCHA POP doesn’t have Vaquerita defending her title too because their titles are too classy for this show.

Have no record of anyone using the name “El Lobito” previously, but I suspect the bit here (for however long it lasts) is familiar Plateada opponents using unfamiliar names when they work on tehse shows.

11/14 AAA TV Results (Irapuato): Mascarita Dorada, Garza debut, 11/16 SLP canceled

AAA TV (MON) 11/14/2011 Lienzo Charro Ignacio León Ornelas, Irapuato [AAA]
1) Jennifer Blake & Sexy Star b Fabi Apache & Lolita
Sexi Star pinned Lolita.
2) Mini Monster Clown, Mini Murder Clown, Mini Psycho Clown b Mascarita Divina, Mini Charly Manson, Octagoncito
Rudos won, planchs n all the tecnicos. After the match, Mascarita Dorada returned to AAA and got the better of the Psycho Circus.
3) Electroshock & Extreme Tiger b Silver King & Último Gladiador
Earlier, Electroshock came out to announce the Maniacos had fractured Heavy Metal’s skull back at Ecatepec (where Metal didn’t wrestle), and it turned into a brawl with random people. Lokillo is now with Electroshock, for the purpose of feuding with Trolli. Extreme Tiger got the pin with a 450 splash on Ultimo Gladiador.
4) Nicho el Millionario b Joe Lider
Bloody hardcore match, of course AAA recap results say Nicho pinned Lider. (Facebook said the opposite.) X-Fly and Halloween helped out Nicho, while Lider only had Extreme Tiger.
5) Halloween, Octagón, X-Fly b Aerostar, Dr. Wagner Jr., Fenix
Faction arguing before the match; Joaquin explained Octagon was only in the second matches because he was feuding with Super Fly (and I guess Super Fly must be in the second match), and Octagon didn’t get a match at Heroes Inmortales because he was too hurt to fight. Octagon, Sexi and Konnan interrupted to say Sociedad was the real AAA. Joaquin told Octagon to get in shape and respect the fans; Octagon had no interest in that. Halloween dedicated this match to his wife, because it was their anniversary. Wagner was distracted by Konnan and fouled by Octagon for the loss. Rudos took Wagner and Fenix’s masks after the match.
6) El Mesías & Jack Evans b Chessman & el Hijo del Perro Aguayo
Jack got the pin with the 630 senton on Perro (!) “To everyone’s surprise”, Hector Garza returned to AAA, as part of Los Perros. They destroyed Jack.

The Hector Garza appearance would’ve been more of a surprise if we all didn’t kinda of know it was coming four days ago; it’s his third surprise appearance in that time. It will still be a big surprise to the majority of AAA fans who don’t follow lucha gossip on Twitter, aren’t aware of Perros del Mal shows, and aren’t reading about AAA tapings before they happen. Same thing with Dorada. It’s fine.

Dorada working here probably has no impact on his Santo agreement or whatever he has going with WWE. He’s already listed on the next Santo show. AAA and Santo do not get along (and may still be suing each other, there was never a mention if that was resolved), but AAA doesn’t appear to have the same “us or him” mentality as CMLL. The “Mascarita Platedata” identity is probably there to separate the two, but surely one of Dorada’s conditions for coming back here was the ability to control his own schedule. AAA minis not being on every show isn’t as a big a deal because Dorada probably won’t be around for every show anyway.

I had heard rumors of Mascarita Dorada going to AAA as far back as early spring, when CMLL attendance was relatively great; there was a long stretch where he quietly disappeared from CMLL cards where it seemed like he might turn up at any AAA TV taping. Mini Psicosis is a clear transitional champion, and a pretty clear sign that someone was coming in to win the minis title down the line, though Dorada was not the only name considered. Anyway, I think the point is quite often takes a long time from the first hints of a rumored luchador promotional jump until it actually happens; just because people haven’t talked about in a while doesn’t mean people aren’t still thinking about it.

This is now the only taping this week. AAA announced late last night that Wednesday’s SLP taping is canceled. That article and a local news paper article do not mention any reason for the cancellation. (Another website is still promoting the show, oops.)

modified TV schedule
taped           airs
11/05 Ecatepec  11/19
11/14 Irapuato  11/26
    TELETON!    12/03
11/27 Pachuca   12/10
12/11 Campeche  12/17
12/16 Puebla    12/24, 12/31 (Guerra de Titanes)

I forget about the Teleton every year (and Televisa also may about Primera Division final that week), Dr. Lucha pointed it out to me. I don’t know that AAA canceled the SLP taping because they realized they had one TV taping, but it does fit perfectly in the old SLP spot.

This also means that AAA has one (1) TV taping before Guerra de Titanes and have appeared to announce zero (0) matches. Maybe it’s clearer on the TV itself. They seem to be setting up Hector vs Jack based off that main event finish (for similar reasons as Dorada), and maybe some miscellaneous tag matches.

Next taping is that show at the end of the month in Pachuca. I would really like to write about AAA more – the proportions are all wrong – but it’s tough to have much to say when they’re running TV tapings about once every two weeks.

No sign of the usual Fox Sports show; that usually is announced and even taping by now.
