Palacio Negro & Jushin Liger keep their titles, LuchaPOP, Castle de Terror

CMLL (SUN) 10/23/2011 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Ángel del Mal b In Memoriam
2) El Alteño & Magnum b Exterminador & Ráfaga
3) Astral, Shockercito, Último Dragoncito b Demus 3:16, Pequeño Violencia, Pierrothito
Tecnicos took 1/3.
4) Palacio Negro b Tiger [OCCIDENTE MIDDLE]
Palacio took the first fall, Tiger won the second and controlled the early part of the third. Lots of near falls, Palacio keeping the title with a top rope powerbomb. Tiger challenged Palacio to a mask vs mask match after.
5) Atlantis, León Blanco, Máscara Dorada DQ Dragón Rojo Jr., Olímpico, Último Guerrero
normal local rudo Leon Blanco replaced Guerrero Maya. Rudos jumped the tecnicos and took the first, tencicos rallied to take the second, UG fouled Atlantis in the third.

IWRG (SUN) 10/23/2011 Arena Naucalpan [Black Terry Jr. (flickr), The Gladiatores]
1) Astro de Plata Jr. & Astro Rey Jr. b Demente & Epidemia
Straight falls. Epidemia filled in for Alan Extreme.
2) Alan Extreme, Carta Brava Jr., Imposible b Dinamic Black, Hijo del Pantera, Saruman
Alan Extreme was the “?” on the rudo side, Hijo del Pantera replaced Triton. Carta Brava pinned Dinamic with a hand on the ropes.
3) Apolo Estrada, King Drako, Picudo Jr. DQ Eterno, Multifacético, Oficial Spartan
Rudos won the first, which included Estrada hitting Multifacetico with a chain and a bottle to make him bleed. Eterno & Spartan got the win for the tecnicos in the second. Apolo went back to the chain in the third, Multifacetico grabbed and used it himself, and the ref spotted that. DQ, but Apolo ended up bloody.
4) Trauma I b Hijo de Pirata Morgan [IWRG JUNIORS]
Champ took first fall, challenger took the second. Pirata’s submission hurt Trauma I’s shoulder, who received medical attention before the third fall. Pirata attacked the shoulder, Trauma “withstood the attack stoically”. Pirata put Trauma in his own hold, but he got the ropes. Trauma I put Pirata in the cruceta invertida himself, Pirata got the ropes, Trauma got the hold a second time, and Pirata gave up.
5) Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro b Demente Extreme, Super Mega, Violento Jack
IWRG vs DTU. DTU brought chairs and light tubes to the match, but the Oficales insisted they give them up because this was to be a clean match. It stayed that way for the first few exchanges, but Violento Jack reverted and hit AK47 with a chair for the first fall DQ. Usual DTU match from there, but DQs were still called – Oficials lost the second fall when AK-47 put light tubes on Jack and hit them with a chair. Bloody mask ripping third. Violento Jack tried to Martinete AK-47, but the referee broke it up. Jack tried a rana on AK47, but AK47 killed him with a move for the win. Rematch was agreed for next week.

No full results from Puebla yet, but NJPW has a write up on Jushin Lyger keeping the CMLL Middleweight Championship over Texano. Texano used the ropes to get the pinfall in the first, then Lyger came back to win the last two falls.

The annual Halloween cage match (held a few days late to be on the usual taping day) with an added apuesta match. They’re building to Apolo Estrada vs Multifacetico, so that seems the most likely semimian. King Drako & Machin seem the most likely losers of the main event.

El Luchador, lineups

El Luchador

This is the A&E Mexico reality one hour show that started airing Saturday. Got a chance to watch it on Wednesday Sunday, and I should have a link to it tomorrow. It’s a very talkitive show, so you may not be able to get a lot out of it if you do not have a good grasp of spanish. I have a poor grasp but was able to follow most things.

The first episode was mostly introductions, to the characters and the story arcs. You knew what they were setting up if you had read the previews for the season: Magnus is the youngest guy in CMLL trying to be a star (no Mistico mention, yet), Shocker is trying to come back from a big injury, Felino is trying to guide his sons, and Rey Bucanero is trying to be a better father & husband after some time apart.

The scenes in the first episode take place around the end of the league stage of Forjando en Idolo and the start of the tournament (late March/April.) They play up the Bucanero/Felino bitterness, so it feels like this is going to go thru the Anniversary show, or at least thru the Felino/Bucanero singles match that preceeded the cage match. They’re doing a very strong build to that rivarly, and always feels better than what was presented on the main TV show. They’re going to wish they could’ve aired this as part of the main TV show by the end, it might have gotten people to show up for the cage match. And, knowing this was the plan for the reality show, it’s odd they they did Felino vs Bucanero in the cage in September, rather than waiting until Decemeber when it would’ve had this additional build. Any other match they do out of the TRT/Peste feud doesn’t seem like it’ll be as strong.

El Luchador is a realitiy show. It’s about as real as most reality shows. There’s not just the obvious time/scene manipulation – Fuego/Magnus, Puma/Hombre Bala and Guerrero Maya/Angel de Oro are all presented as happening around the same time here, but happened weeks apart in reality – but there are many scenes that are clearly happening for the benefit of the cameras. It’s a show where Tiger & Puma train for their matches by practicing with Felino & Princesa Blanca (who, along with Shocker’s dog, is one of the secret breakout stars), where TRT figure out tag team moves by trying them out on children, where Magnus plays FIFA with his friends while still wearing his mask, and where young just starting out luchador Magnus appears to live all by himself in a nicely decorated house. It’s a show where the match results are solely determined by the performance of the luchadors in the ring. Either you accept the show on it’s terms or you’ll get annoyed quick.

It’s not a documentary, it’s an extentsion of La Mascara Trains To Stop The Brazo’s Curse! skit. CMLL’s been desperately lacking in those sort of personality building skits, it’s actually a good thing they’re finally doing it somewhere.

And there is some reality in the El Luchador reality show. Rey and his ex-wife share a meal and their body language alone is enough to tell you there is real sadness there. Instructor Tony Salazar breaks down film of Magnus’ match with him, and the meticilous and harsh way he criticizes Magnus’ flaws lets you know he’s not just doing this for show. There’s enough real here to swallow the rest.

The show takes for the weird in the last fifteen minutes, when the four protaganists are all called late at night for a meeting with Hombre en Negro – the black masked, cane weilding mystery man from Dinamitas angles of long ago. He’s reimagined here as some cross between Paco Alonso & the Grim Reaper, and seems to just order the four to complete their narrative arcs Or Else. It’s an attempt to raise the narrative stakes – something’s on the line now – but on a show so desperately trying to tether itself to reality, the idea that a mysterious man in a black mask with no particular decides the hirings and firiings of a lucha libre company stretches that line of credibility to it’s breaking point.

(even if that man may actually have that job.)

If you’re in Mexico or elsewhere where this version of A&E is avaialble and are at all interested in CMLL, I’d definitely recommend this show. For everyone else, it’ll be up on the site tomorrow.

No results have turned up from Friday’s Guadalajara show (though you can figure them out in the lineups), but it sounds as though the show did not draw well.

4) Olímpico, Psicosis, Volador Jr. vs La Máscara, Metro, Sagrado [MEX TRIOS]
5) Atlantis vs Último Guerrero

So it was the trios match that set up the title match and the main event setting up the singles match. La Mascara, Metro and Sagrado are about as random a trio as they have, so they have  a shot.  CMLL’s otherwise moved on from Atlantis vs Ultimo Guerrero, not sure how much it’s going to still mean.

Rudos took 2/3.
3) Shigeo Okumura & Volador Jr. b Averno & Yoshihashi [quarterfinal]

Jushin Lyger replaced Angel de Oro as Fantasma’s partner.

Okumura got his shot at ‘traitor’ Lyger – and lost.

9) Hijo del Fantasma & Jushin Lyger b Misterioso Jr. & Mr. Niebla [final]
Tecnicos won, though Niebla was crowd favorite.
10) Héctor Garza DQ Rey Bucanero

4) Estrella Blanca Jr. I, Estrella Blanca Jr. II, Hijo de Clímax NC Payaso Carroña, Payaso Miedo, Payaso Terror
Anarquia (Lobo Azul, Black Heart, Cadenero Punk, Matanza 68 – none of who were actually on this show), and the ATM and American Nightmare groups all ran in for the no contest.
5) Cerebro Maligno, Epitafio, Quimico b Centinela, Kung Fu Jr., Ninja de Fuego
Kung Fu Jr. wore a Dr. X tribute mask.
6) Carta Brava Jr. & Ojo Diabolico b Black Thunder & Misterio
Ojo Diabolico replaced Heddi Karaoui.
7) Freelance b PericoTribalZumbiTurboKansukeEternoArgenisLatin Star [IWL Rey del Aire]
Samurai del Sol, Quimico, Súper Fly, ATM listed but did not appear, Zumbi, Turbo and Argenis took their place (and Quimico was shifted to another match.) Argenis got the most pinfalls, but Freelance beat him for the win.
8) Scorpio Jr. & Super Crazy b Aerostar & Electroshock and Balls Mahoney & Low Rider [IWL TAG]
three way turned to a four way with Daga & Suicida being removed. Scorpio took the spot that was originally going to be for Dr. X-Treme and won the tag titles. Scorpio fouled Electroshock, Crazy gave Aerostar a Michinoku Driver.
9) Suicida b Joe LiderLow Rider [IWL JUNIOR]
Daga was asked if he was sure he wanted to give up the belt. Daga was sure, saying it was for his reasons. Daga was then booed. Low Rider worked back to back matches, but was first out here. At the finish, Daga ran in and attacked the referee. Unclear who (or if) that helped, but Suicida did go onto pin Joe Lider to win the title.
10) Tony Rivera DRAW Zumbido [hair]
IWL! Double pin. Zumbido asked for another fall, was denied. Short match.
11) Cerebro Negro, Fantasma de la Ópera, Sepulturero I b 2 Tuff Tony, Gigante Warrior, Mad Man Pondo [semifinal]
12) Monster Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Circus b Ángel o Demonio, León Rojo, Ovett [semifinal]
13) León Rojo b Mad Man PondoGiant Warrior2 Tuff TonyÁngel o DemonioOvett [hair]
losing two teams facing off in this match, though only the person taking the pin would lose their hair. Finish was something gone wrong – Leon Rojo tried a middle rope ‘rana on Pondo, Pondo fell on him in the move, and Rojo suffered shoulder and neck injuries. Pondo covered for the win. Angel O demonio challenged him post match.

By my quick count, that’s 61 luchadors working this show, with Low Rider working twice, and at least five people interfering in matches who didn’t even have one. That must be one huge locker room. If you look at the first few pictures of the recap, it looks like there were more people on the show than paying to see it. If you scroll down further, the crowd looks a lot fuller – there is NO DOUBT these guys are wearing out crowds by running shows with these many wrestlers and these many people, and they’re just going home early. This is because the fans are sane and the people who putting these shows together may not be.

I do not understand what IWL is or what it is trying to do at all, there’s not much sense in it. All I know is my head hurt before I started to figure out the results, and it hurts more now.

10/23 AJPW: 7) [AJPW TAG] Ozz [O] & Cuervo b Kenzo Suzuki [X], The Great Muta
Ozz & Cuervo are the new, 60th champions! The story of the show was AJPW losing all it’s titles to outsiders, the story of the Kenzo is every one turning on him, and both of those combined in this match. Muta turned on Kenzo and Ozz & Cuervo scooped up the win. These two were the 1st AAA tag team champions and never made a successful defense, so that’s got to be the goal this time.

10/23 NJPW: 3) [NJPW G1 Tag] Strong Man [O] & Tama Tonga b Yuji Nagata & King Fale [X]
Strong Man & Tonga are one of five teams in their block with 1 win.
