AAA & CMLL trios belts on the line (not in the same match), AAA HD

I was hoping IWRG results would turn up. They have not!

AAA tapes tonight in Leon, their last taping before Heroes Inmortales this Sunday. There shouldn’t be any major surprises, since the card is already announced, but the one meaningful match is Psycho Circus vs Perros del Mal for the AAA Trios Titles. Assuming the Perros are going to lose the domed cage match (which is what most people seem to be assuming) and aren’t leaving the promotion, they’re either keeping these titles or Perro is winning Wagner’s title to keep the group relevant. Keeping the trios title seems  more likely.

Also, someone’s head gets bashed with a guitar.

CMLL has it’s own trios titles on the line tonight in Puebla. Maximo, Toscano and Rush are an unlikely trio, one that seems unlikely to win as a team. CMLL does like their trios champions to be random assortment of lucahdors, but this seems pushing it and it’d be a surprise to see a title change this quick after Hijos del Averno won the trios belts. This is more interesting to look in reverse; if the title belts do somehow change hands, then we can start trying to guess at when Averno is finishing up.

AAA aired in HD frame ratio this past week (which probably means they’re taping in HD now.) If that’s was the only issue with Galavision, perhaps they may turn back up in the US. It’s possible not the only issue.

Mike Segura lost his hair to Silenciso in Monterrey on Sunday.

Rob has highlights of the CMLL C3 taping from 07/19/11.

First of back to back Fridays with shows here. That would seem to mean they’re setting up a main event for the next week here. Every match (but the opener) has a current champion involved and there’s plenty of non-title possibilities, so no luck narrowing it down.

Kasandra is a 2nd new luchadora here, though if they’re both rudas, they’re still stuck waiting until the DF women come in to actually have matches.

  1. Galavision USA hates the excessive violence on AAA and as long as an alternative is available from Telerisa, they’ll continue to air CMLL. AAA is superior in terms of storyline but look at venues like Silao compared to Arena Mexico on television. What would you want on your network if you were an executive?

  2. @LLL:

I don’t get why Galavision USA has a problem with AAA’s violence when they air those shitty Sunday shows with just as much violence and the nature show. They should just put CMLL on Saturday and AAA on Sunday’s like it used to be.

In other news, Vudu replaced fake Huracan Ramierez at last nights ACM show. That’s a upgrade in my opinion. Can’t wait to see Vudu vs Hector Garza.

  3. @Tim: There are episodes of AAA when every segment has chair shots to the head. Especially when PDM and Clowns or Wagner and LA Park are around. Keep in mind, Galavision Pres is a female.

In addition to the violence, the production is garbage. The graphics suck. The camera work sucks. Some of the arenas look like crap on television. The lighting towers are an obstruction.

What violent shows are on Galavision?

  4. @Rob: Well, sometimes CMLL on Galavision is sponsored by Burger King or Fruit of the Loom. In better days, they had Miller Beer, Western Union and American Airlines.

  5. btw- I miss AAA. Being on Galavision is an advantage. Everyone in America knows it’s the Spanish network that airs Lucha. And AAA can’t cut their own US deal because of that deal with LLUSA. They have to accept whatever goes on between Galavision and their programming source(and part owner), Televisa. Now that Galavision and Televisa are on better terms, they’re getting more soccer games, which means more time changes for Lucha which is never good.

  6. @Calabcd44: Pay Tv penetration in Mexico is at about 40%, with DF market a little higher and other markets a little lower.

But what percentage of fans who attend live events have cable/satellite? I’ll bet that at least 80% who attend Triplemania or who attend Arena Monterrey have pay tv. For CMLL I’ll bet that a good chunk of their regulars have pay tv. Maybe some in the very cheap seats don’t.

TVC seems ok. Unicable would be the best. Fox Sports Mexico has the best penetration and shows an interest in Lucha so that would be the place to go. Only problem with Fox is they have too many live sports which would bounce AAA around.

This is what killed Jim Crockett in the 80’s. He had an awesome cable deal on TBS but continued to mess with over-the-air. He could not let go and it cost him. He underestimated the power of cable. AAA may be doing the same.

I think AAA could leave Televisa and it would not hurt one bit.

  7. @LLL: The indifference to the Warrior/Damian hair match makes me believe that even if a lot of people have cable TV and access to those channels, most people aren’t seeking them out. AAA would have to do a massive re-education campaign to get people to seek out the new network for it not to lose half the audience (which is still looking for the show on Sunday afternoons) along the way.

  8. I agree with @thecubsfan; unfortunately not all people that pay for cable/satellite tv are interested either in sports channels in general or lucha libre in particular.
The channel most included by all the different providers is Fox Sports. It seems to be AAA’s natural option since even if there is no current program with their matches, if you click the other sports – lucha libre section of foxsportsla.com webpage, it has AAA content and none of CMLL (which they air).

  9. @conjuarez: And anyone under the age of 50 thinks that Televisa is for old ladies who watch telenovelas or the news featuring old men with grey hair. Lucha/Wrestling is just the kind of niche product to be able to maintain it’s following from “Over The Air”/free tv to cable.

AAA could go with 28 which would let them be on “free tv” in Mexico City and cable via the rest of Mexico.

What percentage of that Arena Mexico crowd has cable/satellite? It’s had to be pretty high. What percentage of fans attending Triplemania have cable/satellite? If it’s as high as I think, then the company could survive without Televisa. But they have to be on a station like Fox Sports, Unicable, or 28. Not Teleformula ot TVC Deportes.

  10. @thecubsfan: Remember how excited we were when CMLL’s “main show” was on 28 for a few weeks? They should have never gone back to Televisa with the Friday night “flagship” show. They should have kept it on 28 and that would now be the “flagship” show like RAW is to WWE. It would have caught on by now. It would mean far fewer commercials, and very few time slot changes.

I agree that it might be harder for AAA than CMLL if they left Televisa. But they have to do something about the situation. Televisa airs too many commercials, and changes their timeslot often enough to piss off the regular viewers.

Even if AAA loses “half their audience”, which they may, they would not necessarily lose half the people willing to buy tickets to their shows.
