Villanos vs Dinamitas, Universal tournament, Felino

IWRG (THU) 09/01/2011 Arena Naucalpan [Mi Lucha Libre (2), Record, The Gladiatores]
1) Astro de Plata Jr. & Astro Rey Jr. DRAW Alan Extreme & Polifacético
Alan Extreme & Astro de Plata pinned each other on a tapatia.
2) Bugambilia del Norte, Diva Salvaje, Golden Magic b Carta Brava, Imposible, Picudo Jr.
Imposible replaced Comando Negro. Diva pinned Picudo and Golden Magica landed a 450 on Impossible for the win. Impossible and Golden Magica fought after the match.
3) Angelico, Dinamic Black, Hijo del Pantera, Pantera b Apolo Estrada Jr., Avisman, Dr. Cerebro, El Hijo del Diablo
Tecnicos took 1/3, Pantera beating Diablo in the third.
4) Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., Ray Mendoza Jr., Trauma I b El Hijo del Medico Asesino, Hijo de LA Park, Máscara Año 2000 Jr.
This appears to be Medico Asesino’s debut here, though one never knows with that gimmick. Mendoza’s psuedo-tecnico team took 1/3, with Ray ducking a chain punch from Mascara and using it himself to set up the win. Ray then took off Mascara’s mask post match.

Other News

Tonight is the first of what CMLL is calling a month of Anniversary shows. They did this same thing last year, and still had the cage match, and I presume that is what is coming again. It’d probably feel a bigger deal if they hadn’t been doing double title match shows or title match + a tournament shows frequently this summer, but that’s what happens without some big feuds (or at least big feuds timed better; they’d be doing OK if this was June.)

Tonight is the first part of the Universal Tournament. It’s the third year for the champions tournament, with Ultimo Guerrero winning the first year (over Texano Jr.) and Jushin Liger taking last year’s crown (over Sombra.) Liger is expected back for next week’s block, which may or may not include Hiroshi Tanahashi. This week’s eight can be divided up like so:

Not A Chance
– Diamante
– Mephisto
– Pólvora
– Rey Bucanero
– Ephesto

Dark Horse
– Ángel de Oro

Favorites
– La Sombra
– Héctor Garza

You could probably quibble with those rudo placements, but with Averno, Liger, and possibly Ultimo Guerrero and Tanahashi in the other half, a tecnico seems much more likely. If CMLL’s decided to go strong with Angel de Oro, and CMLL seems to think about doing that, this is a big spotlight opportunity for him. Sombra still makes the most sense to me.

Porra Fresa is also picking La Sombra.

The other major match is Ultimo Guerrero & Dragon Rojo vs Atlantis & Guerrero Maya for the tag team titles. They’ve only been champs since last November, but have talked pushed beating UG & Bucanero’s record for most defenses. UG & Dragon are barely a third of the way there, on our numbers, so this would be much too soon for them to lose if that’s all that matters. Not sure it does; Atlantis winning would give more steam to his tecnico turn and make the promotion feel a bit more unpredictable (since most figure UG & Dragon can’t lose because they’re in tournament next week.) I believe Guerrero will cheat the tecnicos to keep one belt and set up whatever they’re doing on the 23rd, but I’m only about 60% certain of it.

There’s a great promo from Felino on Kaiser-Sports. Felino explains that he’s still better than Rey Bucanero despite the DQ loss, because Bucanero was the one who said he’d defeat Felino and that obviously didn’t happen. Felino also warns Texano & Terrible that Bucanero brings trouble to every group he’s in, noting the disappearance of Los Malditos (?) and  Rey being fired from Los Guerreros for poor performance (is that what happened?) Bucanero begged Felino to let him in Peste Negra, Felino was a nice guy and let Rey in so Rey could afford to feed his family, and then Bucanero turned his back on them despicably. Felino thinks Bucanero had long ago picked the wrong job, and belongs in acting/modeling, not lucha libre.

Sexi Star announced the first match for the October Lucha POP show: Keira & Lolita vs Mari & Fabi Apache. She’s putting all her enemies together in hopes they destroy each other, a great strategy. Probably should make it an exploding ring match just to cover all bases.

Rob has highlights from late November ’94 AAA and the last part of his cruiserweight spot fest.

Lineups

IWRG (THU) 09/08/2011 Arena Naucalpan
1) ? vs ??
2) ? & ?? vs ??? & ????
3) Bugambilia del Norte, Diva Salvaje, Miss Gaviota vs King Drako, Picudo Jr., Polifacético
4) Apolo Estrada Jr. vs Saruman, Dr. Cerebro, Dragon Fly, Carta Brava, Astro de Plata Jr., Dinamic Black, Astro Rey Jr., Multifacético, Bestia 666, Centurión, Avisman, Imposible, Tritón, Alan Extreme, Golden Magic [IWRG IC WELTER]
5) Kortiz, Ray Mendoza Jr., Villano IV vs Cien Caras Jr., Hijo de Máscara Año 2000, Máscara Año 2000 Jr.

Lineup this far in advance is subject to change. Seimain is listed as an eliminator, so probably the final two move on to next week for a title match. That’s how they’ve done it recently.

This has nothing to do with this show (because he’s not there), but has anyone seen the end of the opener from last week’s IWRG TV? Crazy stuff. Hijo del Pantera’s dive misses, and he goes into the crowd uncaught. Bugambilia jumps too soon for a Comando Negro foul for the finish, but I guess Comando Negro wasn’t really thrilled about it because he beat up Bugambilia some more (headbutts with the side of the head, even), got his hands raised, and then went back to beat up Bugambilila some more. That was a thing right there.

  1. Does Atlantis/GM Jr. winning the belts really change anything for next week? Not like UG/Rojo are winning their bracket anyhow. I’ll take a title switch and a rematch on the 16th where UG/Rojo win the belts back.

Sombra or Garza seem to be a lock to win tonight and if I’m going with my theory that Tanihashi is in next week and winning it – I have to pick Garza here. But if it was an error as you say then I gotta go with a rudo since Lyger is coming in as a tecnico and would win next week. But all these rudos have no chance. So I’ll just take Garza no matter what.

  2. Lineup note for AAA luchadors in Peru
    9/25/2011
Aerostar/Mini Histeria/Rey del Aire (formerly Heavy Metal down here) vs Apocalipsis (Peru)/Axl/Caoz

Odd teams since they aren’t quite doing Mexico vs Peru and Caoz is the only of the Peruvians who is a rudo. I’m assuming Mini Histeria will work a technico style in the match. Rey del Aire is obviously a flyer, but both Apocalipsis and Axl do some dives as well. Caoz and Apocalipsis should make good bases for Aerostar though, and the four Peruvians are some of the best workers in LWA, so it should be a fun match if they all gel correctly.

  3. “Felino also warns Texano & Terrible that Bucanero brings trouble to every group he’s in, noting the disappearance of Los Malditos (?)”

Los Malditos were Escudero Rojo and Reyes Veloz (long time partners) teaming with Rey Bucanero when he was a rookie. As a young naive Lucha Libre fan it was very confusing to see them wearing the same logo the Quebec Nordiques used since I assumed that meant they were Canadians. They were a great undercard act and way ahead of their time when it came to triple team moves. A rare case of a youngster (Bucanero) being aided by showing he could hang with the veterans and eventually surpassing them.
