Mistico

CMLL is advertising him for future shows. Zocalo writes about a trios of CMLL shows at Arena Pavillon del Norte this month. CMLL’s been sending 2-6 guys there regularly, and the match they’re sending for 02/27 are Averno & Volador Jr. vs La Mascara & Mistico. The Arena Coliseo Monterrey promoters also are advertising Mistico for their 02/27 show (and CMLL guys usually work both.) The Zocalco show refers to Mistico’s mask as part of a farewell tour before starting with WWE, though it’s not clear if CMLL or the article is labeling that way.

CMLL had previously mentioned Mistico would work all previously scheduled dates. Prior to now, there just had not been any announced dates, but both major lucha promotions schedule long in advance. This is still just an agreement between CMLL and the local promoter. We’ll know if Mistico still is working these dates if he appears at the press conference.

WagnerMania writes about the changes in Mistico’s personality over time.

Related: Cesar teases the identity of another CMLL luchador who tried out for WWE. Plenty of people know who this person is. (Even *I* know.) It’s just not clear if CMLL knows. If they do, they haven’t suspended him. If they don’t, and the name gets out, and he gets suspended, that’ll be sad for everyone. I’m 99% sure they know the name – when CMLL was told about Mistico trying out, they were told about everyone who tried out – but better safe than sorry. As far as we know, only Mistico was signed.

Related 2: Estrellas del Ring interviews El Hijo del Medico Asesino, who talks about wanting to make it to CMLL someday, and doesn’t mention a word about WWE. Huh.

Rey de Reyes

Mi Lucha Libre has all four groups, including the two new yet to be revealed ones:

A: Extreme Tiger won
B: Electroshock, Aerostar, Super Fly, Mesias
C: Dr. Wagner, LA Park, Halloween, Nicho el Millonario
D: Jack Evans, Carlito, Ozz, Decnnis

The Electroshock vs Super Fly feud lives! That seems like three tecnicos and one rudo, though I’m not totally sure what sign Electroshock is meant to be on. Jack and Carlito can discuss coping with unhappy working arrangements before their match. I have no strong feeling on who’s going to win any of these groups, but it is nice they have four. I suspect all the ‘big’ names will take each other out so they can be spun out into single matches.

They announced the C group on TV, but maybe the B group is next? AAA says they’ll be announcing the next taping lineup in a few days.

Other Stuff

Viva La Lucha: Continental Conflict debuts on PPV this weekend. The trailer is here. The Mexico matches are from the 11/06 Perros del Mal Tijauna show.

Main event this Sunday for FULL/CMLL @ Arena Coliseo Monterrey (& Arena Pavillon): Rey Bucanero, Dr. X, Skandalo vs Mr. Aguila, Hijo del Fantasma, Angel de Oro. Bucanero and Aguila seem flipped, even though both are technically rudos.

In the undercard of the DTU show where Aeroboy and Violento Jack picked up the AULL Tag Team Titles, Zagma beat Desafiante for his mask. Also in the match: Fly Star (or Cometa Fly in DTU’s recap), who said to be training under Decnnis. No idea Decnnis was training people.

We still don’t know if tonight’s Arena Mexico Cibernetico means anything, but Virus and Stuka are co-favorites.

  1. Interesting picks by Cesar.

We’ll probably see a multi-man stip match with at least 12 participants. Cesar mentions Mistico, but to be honest, even if Mistico weren’t leaving, he really has not figured prominently in any stip teases for many months.

I pick Rush to win Texano’s hair in a multi-man simply because Rush is going to win something at one of the two big shows and I figure a mask loss by Mephisto or Sangre Azteca or Psicosis is best saved for the biggest show of the year.

The fact that Rey De Reyes is now on 3/18 could put pressure on CMLL to do something bigger than originally planned, but I doubt it.

Mephisto vs. Hijo de Fantasma or Misterioso vs. Sangre Azteca vs. Dragon Rojo, or Sombra vs. Psicosis are the only possible stip matches right now that are both strong enough to headline and have participants who could realistically lose their mask.

  2. @LLL: It’s been confirmed by multiple sources that the main event for H2L was going to involve Mistico.

Also I don’t get what you mean he hasn’t been involved in a stip match in many months. CMLL only does 1 major stip match per 3/4 months maxing out at 4 per year. Mistico was involved in two of them last year. The tag match at H2L and the cage match at the Anniversary Show where he was featured heavily and heavily favored to win someone’s mask. Not to mention he headlined the big CMLL show in Nuevo Laredo where he took Oriental’s mask. The only other major shows featured him working both semi-main events – one in a Relevos Incriebles match which was the real draw on the show (Maximo/Taichi was an added bonus, not a real main event) and the other in a dream match (Mistico teaming with Latin Lover).

I’m not how you figure he was never part of CMLL’s plans over the last year.

  3. @ Rob

The fact that Sombra was the big winner at 2Leyendas and Anniversary were signs that someone figured Mistico could leave and a new star must be created.

Had Mistico stayed, none of my predictions would change. I’d still pick Fantasma vs. Mephisto or Misterioso/Dragon Rojo/Sangre Azteca or Sombra vs. Psicosis as the big non multi-man stip matches possible. Otherwise, Mistico would be another name in the multi-man matches that are also possible. He most likely would not be winning a major hair or mask match.

  4. @LLL

I agree CMLL wanted to create new stars and that’s why Sombra won but the promotion clearly still relied on Mistico and that’s why both matches turned into multi-man affairs instead of just Sombra vs Felino in March and Sombra vs Olimpico or Psicosis in September. The fact is Mistico in the match made it important and gave it the aura of a real big show main event. CMLL will learn that this year the hard way.

I still think the mask win over Oriental was important. And I think the only reason he didn’t win the cage match in September was b/c they didn’t want him winning two years in a row.

  5. Mistico is definitely the face on a week-to-week basis. I’m just saying that those possible stip matches didn’t involve him and will probably happen, even if Mistico was staying. I don’t think he would have won a big one-on-one stip match.

Mistico’s star dimmed when Perro Jr. left. That feud was their peak in CMLL.

  6. @LLL

That we can fully agree on. CMLL never created a rudo on Mistico’s level. The mere idea that the plan was to turn Dragon Rojo Jr. into that just makes me laugh out loud.

  7. @Rob – Personally, I like Rojo, and hope his push continues. I think he works hard and doesn’t just go thru the motions.

@cubs – I get *why* you aren’t stating who the mystery wrestler who went to WWE tryout with Mistico was. At the same time, it is kinda shitty to actually talk specifics about the situation and not name a name. I have a feeling this was discussed in a chat that I missed last weekend…

It’s almost impossible to be mad at Cubs.

CMLL will be so paranoid, they’ll start calling everyone in to the office with their passport to check for stamps to see who has been to the US.

  10. It was a tricky situation, because Cesar’s piece ought to be linked to because it’s worth talking about. I can’t just link to the piece and move on, because I guess at who’ll win random and worthless ciberneticos, it’d be conspicuous if I didn’t take a guess at that. But I’m not sure what I wrote was much of a service either.

  11. Can we start a list of names that fit Cesar’s description? I can only come up with about six names that would fit the description and one of those would make a lot more sense than the others if WWE is looking for a Mistico/Diamante type.

  12. @LLL – I’m not mad at Cubs at all. I am a writer, and I majored in Journalism, so I kinda understand not running with a story that is rumor until it is corroborated. I was just kinda pointing out how if he isn’t willing to post the story as News, then it shouldn’t be discussed with a *nod-nod-wink-wink* either.

  13. Mistico is not going to WWE and is obviously still with CMLL. Luchadores are hilarious liars. They constantly change their stories. Dos Caras, Super Nova and Medico now as well have all pulled the same things.

  14. I’m not mad at cubs, because I love him so, but for someone who is as jaded to lucha as myself, when he glosses over things like that, it makes me sad, because I have no idea who they are, and couldn’t possibly even come up with a name based on clues, because I don’t know nearly enough :(
