Sombra in NJPW’s Best of the Super Juniors

Sombra’s block for NJPW’s tournament has been announced:

  • Jushin Liger
  • Tiger Mask IV
  • Prince Devitt
  • Gedo
  • Kota Ibushi
  • Kushida
  • Davey Richards

Tiger Mask IV wins everything, NJPW keeps wanting to do more with Devitt but he keeps getting hurt (they’ve had him sit out so he’s healthy for this), Liger is Liger, and Ibushi and Richards are indy darlings of the moment. Maybe Sombra can pull out wins over Gedo & Kushida, but those are far from certain. Maybe this will be a status quo changing moment for CMLL in NJPW, where someone besides Mistico actually gets treated like a star, but more likely this is more NJPW bringing CMLL guys over to be entertaining in sub 9 minutes losing efforts. At least Sombra’s getting paid. And at least the CMLL guys are losing somewhere else, as opposed to AAA paying people to come in to beat their own guys.

Speaking of that, current AAA Tag Team champion Taiji Ishimori is in other block. (Can’t believe Morishima didn’t make the weight limit.) If both Sombra & Ishimori don’t make the final four (expected result), there’s a chance the CMLL Tag Champ and the AAA Tag Champ would team or face off in a tag match on the final night. Assuming Ishimori is even still the tag champion then – he’s supposed to be working TripleMania on an off day of this tour!

  1. Sombra should have some great maches with the gusy in his block. I’d like to see him Vs Devitt, Liger, Gedo, Ibushi and especially Davey Richards.

Question hasn’t Mistico done the Best of the Super Jr. Tournament before and if not, why havent New Japan got him in?

  2. @K.D.B_31: Mistico has not. It’d be a very tough thing; CMLL would want not want him losing and would probably require Mistico make it to the finals, and NJPW probably has other plans. It’s a lot easier to bring in a guy like Sombra, who CMLL is just happy to get the experience and aren’t as worried about wins/losses.

  3. It really shows how little the people in charge in Mexico care about their own wrestlers.

As you noted AAA has their guys losing every week to foreigners, lots of whom are just in for one-shot deals. There is no build to the Mexicans getting any sort of wins back. They are losers. WWE/TNA rejects are winners. Then Konnan is surprised when his show does half the ratings WWE does.

Meanwhile CMLL thinks ‘talent trade’ means every Japan guys that gets sent over needs to be an automatic main eventer and the only storyline they can run with them is Mexico vs Japan. New Japan meanwhile jobs out every CMLL wrestler in under 10 minutes no matter how important they are to the promotion.

At least CMLL has figured out to beat the Japanese guys before they leave Mexico. AAA has still yet to catch onto that notion and would probably put Jimmy Jacobs over Cibernetico at Triplemania if he were available to be booked.
