Atlantis & Rey Bucanero beat Mascara & Fantasma here. No notable storylines.

CMLL (SUN) 03/07 Arena Coliseo [Ovaciones (PDF), Alan]
1) Bengala & Camaleón b Apocalipsis & Cholo
2) Fabián el Gitano & Leono DQ Puma King & Tiger Kid
3) Pequeño Nitro b Eléctrico, Shockercito, Último Dragoncito, Pequeño Olímpico, Bam Bam, Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Warrior, Pequeño Universo 2000, Pequeño Violencia [cibernetico, Pequeno Rey de Aires]
4) Terrible, Texano Jr., Vangelis b Máscara Dorada, Rush, Toscano
5) Blue Panther, Brazo de Plata, Volador Jr. b Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas, Ray Mendoza Jr.

Ray Mendoza replaced Taichi. (Maybe Taichi was busy getting a new phone?) You would think telling the difference between Mendoza and Taichi would be pretty easy, but Ovaciones doesn’t have that sub. (Maybe they were busy getting a new phone too, and just had a “premonition” of the post match angle?)  Volador pinned Negro and challenged for a title, which may show up next Sunday. I hope he defends the IWRG one. Monito was hanging out with Mr. Niebla, which the really important development here.

This has nothing to do with this show, but this week’s Ras de Lona needs to be nominated for an Emmy based on their interviews with Shocker and Monito about their incident. Poor Shocker, just distraught about this break up.

Pequeno Nitro defeated Bam Bam for the surprise Pequeno Rey de Aires win, and challenged for the obvious title match. With both Violencia and Nitro looking for shots, Bam Bam is going to go from no defense to many.

Gatos Negras lost by DQ when Tiger fouled Leono by DQ to lose in straight falls.

Ovaciones also recaps Volador’s career to date, just in case it’s important in a few days.

At last night’s Arena Naucalpan show, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. and Cincinnati Bengal Dhani Jones got into a skirmish, setting up a match for next Sunday. Jones is in town to film an episode of his reality show (Dhani Tackles The World – football people tries different sports around the world), and SuperLuchas says he’ll be training with Black Terry. Black Terry Jr. has photos of the show, and video up already, which seems like something that might go viral.

The newest Luchas 2000 (lots of pictures here) includes a Hijo del Santo interview about the most recent Todo x el Todos shows in Belgium. He confirms Mini Santo = Mascarita Dorada, who was forbidden from using that gimmick on a Santo show. Santo says he hoped Dorada wouldn’t get fired for working the shows. Box Y Lucha #2964‘s headline implies Mascarita Dorada quit, rather than being fired. I think we can split the difference and figure Dorada was told he’d be let go if he worked this tour, and he decided to work the tour knowing that was it.

Dorada is probably going to be fine in the long term, though he’ll have to come up with a new name. LuchandoLibre recaps an EAW press release about shows next weekend, and Dorada is clearly one of the teased unnamed new wrestlers based on the description.

Update: DJ Spectro scanned the Dorada interview from Box Y Lucha. Mascarita is complimentary towards CMLL for the opportunity and unspecific about the reasons for his departure, only mentioning that he left last weekend (probably at the same time he left to go to Belgium.) Mascarita says he’ll be working with Perro and Santo and others.

Luchas2000 also has dueling interviews from Misterioso II (CMLL) and Misterioso Jr. (Monterrey). The later one is definitive that he has the right to use the name and has had it for 9 years. The former one says CMLL tradermarked “Misterioso” three years ago. We need a tie breaker here – so Luchas 2000 also an interview with Misterioso Senior!

  • Misterioso Jr. is Misterioso Senoir’s nephew from Monterrey. Misterioso Senior said he could use the “Junior” name when he was properly prepared, and gave his official okay last year.
  • CMLL’s Misterioso should have always  been listed as “Misterioso II”, since that’s the name on his license. Misterioso Sr. blames the promoters for not properly listing his name, not the wrestler.

Misterioso Sr. is proud of the work the current CMLL one has done carrying his name, but wants that one to give the new one a chance to prove he’s also worthy of the name. Misterioso Sr. is hopeful both can chat and work this out amicably.

Worth noting Misterioso II was originally introduced as Misterioso Sr.’s nephew, just like Misterioso Jr. now, but there’s no mention of any family connection between II & Sr. now in both of their interviews. Clearly makes you wonder about how real the connection is with the new kid, and feels like Misterioso just sold the name twice and it hasn’t gone as smoothly as with Mascara Ano 2000 and Cien Caras. Misterioso II is not at all derogatory towards Misterioso Jr. in his interview – he hopes the new kid is a good wrestler and makes it to CMLL someday – and would be okay with this if they could just find a clear way for everyone else to easily tell them apart, like a more distinct mask and name.

(This is all really good work by Luchas2000.)

On this weekend’s AAA TV in Mexico, both Ken Anderson (or Kennedy or whatever) and Hernandez were both announced as coming in from TNA for Rey de Reyes. Not sure if it was specified, but Hernandez is surely the mystery man in the Rey de Reyes tournament, and is the best bet to win his block over Kenzo, Elegido and Crazy Boy.

Cesar writes about the NWA/CMLL title thing. I’m kind past this story by this point, but it is funny that – as noted in LuchandoLibre’s recap of the press event – Perro Aguayo invites people from CMLL, AAA and indies to participate in the tournaments they plan on running, saying unity with strength Mexican wrestling against the American stuff. Isn’t the NWA an American company, one whose name they’d be showing as more important than their own if they run these tournaments?

Lineup

LUM (FRI) 03/12 Pista La Bugambilias [Gabriel Martinez @ LDMLL]
1) Codigo Rojo vs Dr. Maldito
2) Dranser & Scravos vs Black Soul & Titanik
3) Hijo de Pirata Morgan & Pirata Morgan Jr. vs Gato Volador & Pantro Sr. [IWRG IC TAG]
4) Diluvio Negro I, Diluvio Negro II, Tigre Universitario vs Difunto I, Difunto II, Sergio Romo Jr.

Random show, but odd that Pirata Jr. is listed as defending the title Pirata Sr. won.

CMLL (SUN) 03/14 Arena Mexico
1) Bengala, Molotov, Sensei vs Artillero, Inquisidor, Súper Comando
2) Fabián el Gitano, Leono, Starman vs Bronco, Puma King, Tiger Kid

4) Máximo, Metro, Rush vs Ray Mendoza Jr., Sangre Azteca, Vangelis
5) Hijo del Fantasma, La Sombra, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto

Look at 3 & 5. Look at 2 &4. A terrible injustice is being done! This is Bam Bam’s first known defense in 15 months.

No Negro Casas, even on the updated card. They do seem to actually be going some place with the Fabian/Leono vs Gatos Negro, and I like the rudos chances of winning that feud.

CMLL (SUN) 03/07 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [MedioTiempo, Fuego en el Ring]
1) Angelo & El Divino b In Memoria & Titanio
2) Drago & Infierno b Astaroth & Magnum

4) Dalis la Caribeña & Lady Apache b Princesa Blanca & Princesa Sujei
5) Atlantis, Rey Bucanero, Último Guerrero b Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara, La Sombra

Mascarita Dorada, tickets, lineups

According to this week’s SuperLuchas magazine, Mascarita Dorada has been let go from CMLL due to working (prohibited) Hijo del Santo shows. All he had to do was not eat the apple. Not exactly sure who owns the Dorada name – it is a mask Sagrada was using previously in AAA a couple times, but then CMLL probably wouldn’t have put someone in a Mascara Dorada gimmick if they didn’t own that one.

CMLL continues to low it’s limbo bar of ticket prices. Today, all kids get in free (to both Arena Coliseo DF and Guadalajara) and all tickets are 80 pesos and under for adults. They’re also expanding their 5 kids on 1 adult ticket to Guadalajara.

Looks like ACM had:

  • 03/02: Pirata Morgan & Sergio Romo Jr. b Diluvio Negro I & Diluvio Negro II
  • 02/28: Electroshock, Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., Silver King b Black Warrior, El Mesías, La Parka Jr.

Just the 2 matches.

Cesar ranks the most likely to lose their mask on Dos Leyendas, and figures out who would lose each possible matchup. This reminded me of ESPN.com’s Draft Lottery machine, though I might have just insulted Cesar by comparing him to Chad Ford. Anyway, I think he’s underrated CMLL’s opinion of Volador Jr. and definitely believe he’d beat Felino if it came down to those two. The idea about the real feud here being Mistico vs Himself (or his evil self) is interesting, but I don’t think that’s a feud that resolves that quick. Felino/Mistico as rudo/rudo won’t work, and Mistico turning back tecnico makes this whole year so far a waste – if they really wanted to do Felino/Mistico at Anniversary show, they already had it set up before they turned Mistico.

Latest in Sean Morley Facebook excitement: his CMLL trip was canceled.

Cesar also talks about the situation around the Mexican Heavyweight Title, spinning it around into an indictment of the lucha libre press. I’ve gone back and forth with similar thoughts this week. On one hand, Charly/Perros/X-Fly all deserved to get their side of the story told; as weak as it was, it was good that those who wanted to got the chance to respond. At the same time, it shouldn’t have taken 3 days and an unrelated press conference to get that response and if it did, they shouldn’t have held of writing about it for 3 days (which it appeared every one did.)

they’ve got another big show to run. Not sure what the deal is with this show, but obviously bigger than usual. Scorpio Jr. & Canelo Casas working an otherwise all CMLL show (the tercera features guys they use a bit off TV for shows like this, but never on it) is interesting but may not actually mean anything.

I wonder where Valiente & La Mascara are? Sangre could use his old rivals.

Lightning match is a meeting of the two recent minis rival. Maybe that mask match comes out of this, a week or two after Dos Leyendas? Or they could just hold off on it forever.

Main event is the third straight week of that match. Tecnicos have won the last two.

Tecnicos took the main event in straight falls. Felino both fouled Sombra and pulled his mask. Sombra & Volador got Mistico with a double spanish fly in the second fall. Lots of mask ripping.

StrongMan took the pin off a triple super powerbomb, after Mascara accidentally took Shocker out. Diamante was strechered after taking a middle rope faceslam to lose the lightning match.

Starman is holding  a tournament for rookies, where the 15 best will get a chance to earn their actual licenses.

2010 AAA TV Chart
Projected Air Date (#929)
Mexico: 03/14
US: 03/27

Charly got Histeria in the opener via German suplex.

Von Eerie and Sexi Star were the surprise team for the rudas (which kinda makes me wonder about Rain on next Friday, but I guess we’ll find out then.) They did get the win in their debut, which shouldn’t be the surprise I just made it sound like.

Jack beat Lider for the win. Odd that the champions lose right before they do a title shot tournament – why do you need one now? I thought I was kidding about people who beat Lider & Nicho in a non-title match never facing them again.

Parka & Silver were unconscious for twenty seconds on the outside, so this feud must continue. Octagon and Ultimo Gladiador got involved in this match.

Cibernetico was blocked from coming to the ring for a while, Tiger got worked over, Cibernetico hit the ring and ran wild, Konnan distracted him, Cibernetico was fouled and pinned. Legion continued to work over Cibernetico and Tiger until Mesias made the save and hugged Cibernetico. No report of a hug for Extreme Tiger. Poor Tiger.

Electroshock lost the match when he decided he rather punch Dr. Wagner in the face. Perfectly understandable! Maybe I need to turn Electro green? Strong build to Dr. Wagner vs Electroshock, a match seemingly not happening any time soon. AAA raves about Octagon doing his armdrag and a tope without hitting the ropes.

Next taping is Rey de Reyes.

Dr. Cerebro retains, Dos Leyendas, Lineups

4) Dr. CerebroHijo del Pantera [IWRG IC Light]
5) Barba Roja, Trauma I, Trauma IIAngelico, el Ángel, Pantera

Trauma I was hurt in the main event and strechered out in the second fall. Barba Roja filled in for Hijo del Pirata Morgan.

Hijo del Pantera dove onto Dr. Cerbero before the match started and captured the first fall in a minute, but lost the last two.

DQ in tercera was for throwing Freelance over the top.

Video’s already up.

Ovaciones, ESTO, Notimex, Record, and other outlets had quotes from the press conference. All four wrestlers mentioned they’d much rather have the one on one versus their rival, rather than this situation. It’s certainly honest, and also not the way you’d think about selling this show, but it’s what they typically do. Even though the rules clearly allow for the possibility of partner facing partner in the final match, both couples were talking about the strength of the team. Felino reminded us that he was Mistico’s padrino – one of his partners* in his debut match – noting how it’s come full circle to this match. Místico still believes he’s the best, title belt or not. Volador and Sombra talked about quieting their rivals.

* – other partner? Volador Jr. [dramatic sting here]

It’s strange how far CMLL has come since the Anniversary show. The big tease was for Místico and Felino in a mask match, and we might still get it, but just not near the way we’d figure. These dual feud echo a similar situation one decade ago, when Atlantis & Mr. Niebla faced Shocker & Villano III at the 1999 Anniversary show in a match with the same rules. Mr. Niebla took Shocker’s mask, and CMLL waited six months to do the bigger Atlantis/Villano III matches. I think we all kind of assume the same turn of events, with the lesser feud (Sombra/Felino) being blown off here and the other one being held off for the Anniversary show. It’d be remarkable if Volador, Sombra or Místico lost their mask in this sort of match, but CMLL has shown itself capable of some remarkable things.

In that vein, there’s still the dangling plot of Fake Felino/Puma King twice proving a distraction for Sombra in matches with Felino. Maybe Sombra finally gets the best of the situation the third time, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing it once more.

CMLL is in a status quo keeping spot for the next two Fridays, so there’s not a lot to say about this card. Past behavior indicates they’ll anticipate a low turnout next week and schedule next week’s card with that reaction in mind. AAA’s taping tonight is in the same situation, with Rey de Reyes and the taping after already well known. (Good time for a vacation.)

Cesar has his own analysis of the card.

The only other news to come out of this press conference was a reminder about the house giveaway contest. The trivia quiz is actually online. I think I got 9 of 10, though maybe I’d get the 10th if I used the wiki…

There’s still some articles picking up on the Perros del Mal press conference. Notimex has a long article about the whole thing (and a separate one about denying involving in whatever Charly was up to last weekend.) The Gladiatores has video interviews with X-Fly, Perros del Mal, and video of the NWA and Perros press conferences.

Sean Morley posted a message on his facebook account announcing he was done with TNA and headed to CMLL. Probably should wait for CMLL to confirm; they wanted him a few months ago but it’s possible they’ve moved on, especially after their confusion about Morley not coming in that time.
