IWRG, attendance, lineups

IWRG (THU) 02/04 Arena Naucalpan [SL #350]
1) Máscara Magnífica & Volaris b Epidemia & Flama Infernal
2) Comando Negro & Keshin Black b Brazo de Platino & Brazo Metalico
3) Dr. Cerebro, Hijo del Pantera, Trauma II b Hijo del Signo, Eros, Gringo Loco, Black Terry, Samoth, Trauma I, Dinamic Black, Maldito Jr., Imperial, Bombero Infernal, Guizmo, Avisman, Alan Extreme [Copa High Power]
4) Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro b Angelico, Pantera, Solar I

You who have watched the youtube channel know these results much better than I. Reading the results, it looks like Hijo del Pantera won it for the veterans team by pinning the last rookie (Hijo del Signo.) Pantera gets credited for winning the whole thing, even though Trauma and Cerebro were also alive. Signo, Trauma, and Cerebro all stomped down Hijo del Pantera after the match. The only noted angle was Terry & Gringo not getting along on the same time, and being pinned at the same time as a result.

SuperLuchas says Friday’s Arena Mexico show drew over 10K, the biggest draw since the anniversary show. I think next week will top it.

Estrella del Ring has an interview with indy wrestler Halcon del Averno

Des De Ringside talks to Johnny Villalobos. I do not recall him being in ECW.

Milenio writes about a man who is undertaker by day, luchador by night.. No, not that one.

Cesar takes a look at this week’s lineups.

DJ Spectro looks back at Boxers vs Wrestlers and notes Rubi Gardenia was the loser in Tijuana’s cage/hair match on Friday (with Park, Mascara Sagrada, Demon and winner Starboy.)

Cronicas Y Leyendas has pieces on Blue Demon defeating Cavernario Galindo in 1954 when the wild man got himself DQed in the third fall, Dos Caras defeating Canek in 1992, and on El Solitario

SuperLuchas has #350 Mistico rudo

Box Y Lucha #2960 has Wagner wanting Mesias’ hair (which clearly isn’t going to happen, but then Wagner can say Mesias is scared.) There’s a tease of Wagner saying he’s staying at AAA, though I’m not sure I believe that more the headline (except, where else can he go at this point?)

Segunda Caida is speeding thru the 2010 IWRG: 01/10 (Cerebro/Bushi), 01/14 (Traumas vs Zatura/Suicida), and 01/21 (Angelico/Navarro).

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

Who are they running against here? This is clearly a special lineup. First appearance of Mistico as a rudo outside Arena Mexico.

2010 AAA TV Chart
Projected Air Date (#926)
Mexico:  02/21
US: 03/06

Before I get started, a brief point on AAA creative: it’s pretty clear that there’s been a booking change here, based both on the evidence we call see (these results) and the background noise of late (Roldan stepping away from creative, writers being let go.) If you take a moment to step back and look at the big picture, the Dec/Jan tapings were lame duck shows, and this week was the start of some new directions and the start of whomever is making those decisions. The point is – you can’t wholly blame the current guy for the old guy’s decision, because they’re two different people.

One of the many things very clear from this week is while the old guy might have set up Latin Lover vs Mesias for the AAA Heavyweight Championship for Rey de Reyes, the new guy is not very interested in actually doing this match. This main event was again all about Electroshock trying to force his way into that main event. He got the clean pin on Marco, despite failing to get along with Dr. Wagner thru the match. Electroshock is not feuding with Wagner but seems out on his own, and still demanding to be in that main event. I’d expect him to get it.

The rest of the card, starting from the opener

  • No typo in the opener. Legion attacked Cinthia in the back. Somehow, Alex was allowed to take her place, and got Fabi with the crossface for the win. After the match, Aerostar, Fabi Apache’s partner/secret admirer Gran Apache, Fabi & Mari’s father who was on the show Xtreme Tiger, who has absolutely nothing to do with any of this and appeared to be going after an entirely different title, made the save and challenged Alex for a title shot. Hooray?
    • There have been 4 TV title defenses of the AAA Cruiserweight Title. All four have involved Extreme Tiger, and all but one have included Alex Koslov.
  • Lasser Boy won one consecutive match before losing, clean, to Tiger Cota. Saving my eye roll for the next taping, if this isn’t going anywhere.
  • Hermandad Xtreme defeated Crazy Boy and Xtreme Tiger (there he is.) They beat Crazy Boy so bad, AAA calls him Atomic Boy. (I don’t really understand that joke either.) Nicho & Lider are believed to hold the record for the longest title reign by a team no one cares one iota about.
  • Monster Clown beat Alex Koslov to keep the streak going. Also, we now know Monster Clown would probably beat Fabi Apache in a fight. (In case you were curious.) Cibernetico said he and the Circus were together. Maybe together enough to stop wearing the Bizarros shirt?

(News update will be up late tonight. Probably.)

Volador defeats Mistico with his own move, GDL triumphs

CMLL (FRI) 02/05 Arena Mexico [SuperLuchas]
1) Leono & Tony Rivera b Durango Kid & Inquisidor
2) Hiroka, Princesa Blanca, Princesa Sujei b Estrella Mágica, Lluvia, Marcela
3) Hijo del Fantasma DQ Rey Bucanero [lightning]
4) Blue Panther, Héctor Garza, Shocker b Averno, Mephisto, Terrible
5) Atlantis & Máscara Dorada b La Máscara & Negro Casas [natl pi, final]
6) Volador Jr. b Místico

Mistico was more aggressive in this match than Sunday. Mistico jumped Volador before the match, and ripped up that mask, getting DQed in the first fall. A fan (?) threw Volador a new mask, and Mistico ripped that one up. Someone sent a third Volador masks out from the back, and Mistico tore that one up too. Mistico ended up tossing his own mask to Volador, behind the ref’s back, to draw a DQ win in the second fall, tying it up. Crowd actually seemed to get behind Mistico in the third fall; Cesar notes that there were a lot more Volador items being bought before the show, but Mistico still came off as the better luchador when it counted. Mistico tried La Mistica, Volador escaped, Volador tried La Mistica, Mistico did NOT escape. Volador beat Mistico with his own hold, and will get a title match (MEX LH) next week in a rematch. And whatever angle they might have wanted to run this week, maybe they’ll run it next week.

If you count Sunday’s finish, Mistico and Voaldor now tied 1-1.

The Guadalajara duo of Atlantis & Mascara Dorada defeated the crowd favorites from DF, Negro Casas & La Mascara. It was a technical match, to set it up the main event as a strong contrast. DF took the first, GDL took the last two (Atlantida on Negro, La Mascara counted after a Dorada dive.) The top matches were over 20 minutes long. This tournament seems to have been a pretty strong success (especially for an ultimately meaningless mid-winter tournament), and it should be back next year for DF to get their win.

Bucanero was DQed for pulling Fantasma’s mask.

Rudas won their match in straight falls.

More Santo: ESTO (where we oddly learn Pompin’s real name and luchador name), Record (where Santo teases a new movie), ESTO again (where Santo explains it’ll actually be a series of 3 films – one on El Santo, one on el Hijo del Santo, and one on his son.)

DJ Spectro has video of El Snato vs Espanto I from 1963

Hijo del Perro Aguayo says he wants to face Park, Demon and Santo in a mask match, because his hair will grow back if he loses, but masks do not. Smart man.

2010 AAA TV Chart
Projected Air Date (#924)
Mexico: 02/14
US:  02/27

The big news that was expected didn’t seem to occur on this show. There were a few minor notes.

No word on the DQ in the minis match.

They played up the La Parka/Lasser Boy connection, with Parka introducing Lasser Boy after his debut, then congratulating him after his win.

Secta quickly and definitively beat the Vipers in their match. The Secta never do that to anyone, so clearly they’re going somewhere with this.

Semimian was even until Konnan showed up as a distraction. Zorro nailed Pimpi with the cane and submitted him for the win. Pimpi was strechered out.

Mesias and Latin Lover got along fine in the main event. Electroshock submitted La Parka clean, then demanded to be the third man in the title match at Rey de Reyes. Electro noted he won Rey de Reyes last year (but got no title shot) said he was tired of being other people’s henchmen and wanted to do something for himself.

Next taping is Sunday. It’s Mesias/Marco vs Electro/Wagner, so if they’re going somewhere with the Electro challenge, they can easily follow up on it there.

It’s been 5 years, 6 months and 17 days since Mistico (& Santo) beat Volador & Atlantis to win the 2004 Gran Alternativa, the event that set up Mistico as the future star of the company. Depending on how you look at it, either that date, or Mistico’s debut, or the 1/1/2005 match where he beat Averno for his first title (and moved from “future star” to “star”) is the start of the Era Of Mistico in CMLL. Mistico will still be on top of CMLL at the end of the night, but it may also be a totally different era.

I’ve heard people guess that tonight’s main event will end with Mistico officially joining the rudos, or with Volador swerving everyone and ending up wiht Hijos del Averno. I could see them both being friends again after the match (Mistico has said the Super Sky Team is done, but Mistico says a lot of things.) I could also see a third party – Avernos, Peste, who knows – getting involved to unite the pair again. If you ever wanted to make up a rumor about a finish, this would be the one to do, because people are willing to believe just about anything about this one. CMLL’s hinting strongest towards Mistico turning rudo, not that really means much.

It’s my guess that no one really knows for sure at the moment. Whatever decision they’ve made isn’t final until it actually happens, and there’s surely more people trying to be heard on this decision than any other. Especially at the highest level. Even the most distant boss off all time will be personally involved in this decision. Tecnico Mistico has carried the company in many ways, but being a draw is most important to those who work at the company. There’s no other tecnico on hand who would fill that spot on Day 1, but Tecnico Mistico is starting to see some diminishing returns, and Rudo Mistico might be a better draw in the short term.

Besides the main event, the national parajes increidble tournament, the thing that actually started all this, is wrapping up tonight. It’s kind of a mirror match up of beloved rudo & young up and coming tecnico vs beloved rudo & young and up coming tecnico. Except, La Mascara’s not really a young guy (more of a factor of many even younger guys coming in than aging.) Also, Mascara moved up faster than a lot of his contemporaries, but they’ve mostly caught and passed him. Dorada, a two belt champion in the middle of a hot stretch, is one of those guys. Still, La Mascara & Negro Casas are the home team and should be easy crowd favorites.

As fate would have it, today is also the anniversary of El Santo’s death. Articles:

And AAA is taping tonight in Puebla, with #1 Contender Latin Lover teaming with Champion Mesias. We’ll be talking about this show (assuming live results are up as usual) and the CMLL show (for how ever long radio goes with the show – they may not be able to stick around for the mian event!) tonight in the chat.

Misterioso, thru Fuego en el Ring, demands a shot at Ultimo Guerrero and the heavyweight championship. He’s clearly been reading himself for that weight division. Misterioso wants to face everyone for hair, mask and titles, but figures knocking off Ultimo Guerrero will springboard him into a position where he actually gets those matches.

Fuego en el Ring also talks to Diamante, and mentions him being the New Sombra. Because the old Sombra is quite old at 20. The actual point is Sombra started with CMLL at 17, Diamante did the same, and they’re both good.

El Pancracio has an interview with Villano IV (says he’s not back with CMLL, just filling in for the one appearance), and the four guys in last Sunday’s Perro main event.

The La Sombra del Asno blog has some neat illustrations of lucha libre, though it’s more greco-roman wrestling.

Kcidis has the Wagner family.

Segunda Caida checks out 01/03/10 IWRG.

LuchaWorld has the newest Segunda Caida.
